Brewery news Australia: Lion’s revenue and profitability drop as Australian beer market remains challenging
Japan’s Kirin-owned dairy and drinks group Lion has suffered a 9.5 per cent slide in first-half revenue and a 13 per cent drop in profitability as the Australian beer market remained challenging and it was forced to book an inventory revaluation at the start of the year due to lower milk prices, The Australian reported on August 4.

A shortage of oranges and a spike in prices for orange juice concentrate also hurt earnings for its non-alcoholic drinks business.

Driving the retreating sales and earnings was the termination of a distribution agreement with global brewer AB InBev for a number of key beer brands including Australia’s No 1 imported beer, Corona, and the sale of Lion’s wine arm, Fine Wine Partners.

The brewer is finding the A$14 billion Australian beer market tough going as drinkers turn away from traditional beers in favour of craft, or turn off beer completely.

While Lion has a strong portfolio of craft beers — including James Squire and Little Creatures, White Rabbit and Kosciuszko Pale Ale — growth wasn’t enough to counter the unfavourable conditions for its mainstream beers such as XXXX, Toohey’s and Hahn.

In a trading update on August 3, Lion said overall net revenue was down 9.5 ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan & USA: Sapporo Holdings acquires San Francisco’s iconic Anchor Brewing Company
Japan’s Sapporo Holdings Limited on August 3 announced that it would acquire iconic San Francisco craft beer maker, Anchor Brewing Company. The news was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The deal, financed through a combination of “own capital [and] external borrowings,” is worth $85 million, according to Sapporo’s second quarter financial statements. It is expected to close on August 31.

Under the terms of the agreement, Sapporo Holdings will acquire “all of the equity interest of Anchor Brewing Company,” which is controlled by a parent company “Anchor Brewers & Distillers.”

Anchor Distilling Company is not included in the deal.

Anchor Brewers & Distillers was formed in 2010 when former Skyy Spirits executives Keith Greggor and Tony Foglio purchased the brewery via the Griffin Group investment and consulting company from Fritz Maytag, who is widely regarded as one of the earliest pioneers of craft microbrewing.

The 121-year old Anchor Brewing Company, known for its Anchor Steam Beer, ranked as the 22nd largest craft brewing company in the US last year, according to industry trade organization the Brewers Association. The company produced 135,000 barrels of beer in 2016, but sales declined 4 percent versus the previous year.

In a press release announcing the purchase, Sapporo said ...More info on site

The brewery is to be constructed in the municipality of Lubango within the next 24 months. According to local media, 25% of the brewery’s output will be exported.

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery fearing workers’ strike over wage increase negotiations
Oriental Brewery (OB) is struggling to complete wage negotiations as union workers demand more than what management is willing to offer, company officials said on August 3, Korea Times reports.

It is feared that the workers may go on strike if the talks continue to drag on, which would adversely affect the brewer's operations and tarnish its image.

Korea's largest brewer, which accounts for more than 50 percent of the beer market, is having a hard time concluding wage talks with union members who demand an 8 percent hike in base salary. But management is willing to increase the salary by 2.5 percent.

Unionized workers already voted in favor of a strike and since July 27, they have been staging a series of partial strikes at OB's three plants to put more pressure on management to accept their demands. But they have remained cautious about staging a full-scale walkout.

The brewer runs production lines in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, and Gwangju, employing about 2,000 people. Nearly 1,200 are union members.

In August the previous year, OB employees stopped working for 10 days, bringing the firm's three plants to a complete halt.

This first full-blown strike, since April 2014 when AB InBev acquired OB ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: New legislation allows craft breweries and distilleries to sell their products to visitors
The Irish government has approved legislation that will allow craft breweries and distilleries to sell their products to their visitors, BBC reported on July 27. The legislation, first proposed by the Labour Party, will now have to work its way through the Irish parliament. It would allow microbreweries sell their drinks on their premises between 10:00 and 18:00. Visitors would have to complete a guided tour of the brewery before they could buy its alcohol. Up until now, craft breweries and distilleries have needed a pub licence to sell their products to visitors. Under the Intoxicating Liquor (Breweries and Distilleries) Bill 2016, they will have to apply to the courts for a certificate before licences are granted. The licences will be subject to annual renewal. Alan Kelly, the Labour TD who introduced the bill, insists the move will encourage the growth of 'craft beer tourism' across the country. "I believe it's very important for Irish tourism to create a real visitor experience," he said. Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said allowing visitors who have completed a craft brewery or distillery tour to purchase alcohol on the premises would "add to the visitor experience". "As was once the case many years ago, ...More info on site
