Brewery news Japan & USA: Sapporo Holdings acquires San Francisco’s iconic Anchor Brewing Company
Japan’s Sapporo Holdings Limited on August 3 announced that it would acquire iconic San Francisco craft beer maker, Anchor Brewing Company. The news was first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

The deal, financed through a combination of “own capital [and] external borrowings,” is worth $85 million, according to Sapporo’s second quarter financial statements. It is expected to close on August 31.

Under the terms of the agreement, Sapporo Holdings will acquire “all of the equity interest of Anchor Brewing Company,” which is controlled by a parent company “Anchor Brewers & Distillers.”

Anchor Distilling Company is not included in the deal.

Anchor Brewers & Distillers was formed in 2010 when former Skyy Spirits executives Keith Greggor and Tony Foglio purchased the brewery via the Griffin Group investment and consulting company from Fritz Maytag, who is widely regarded as one of the earliest pioneers of craft microbrewing.

The 121-year old Anchor Brewing Company, known for its Anchor Steam Beer, ranked as the 22nd largest craft brewing company in the US last year, according to industry trade organization the Brewers Association. The company produced 135,000 barrels of beer in 2016, but sales declined 4 percent versus the previous year.

In a press release announcing the purchase, Sapporo said ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Craft Brew Alliance reports Q2 results
Craft Brew Alliance (CBA) on August 2 reported second quarter earnings results, which were highlighted by a 9 percent increase in Kona depletions.

But Kona’s continued depletion growth – which CBA executives have repeatedly touted as a mainstream, crossover brand that sources volumes from the craft and import segments – couldn’t completely offset ongoing declines of Widmer Brothers and Redhook.

Widmer depletions dipped 13 percent during Q2, while Redhook depletions declined 24 percent, the company noted in an SEC filing. Those declines contributed to portfolio-wide depletion decreases of 2 percent. Year-to-date depletions, meanwhile, were down 1 percent through June 30, the company added.

Portfolio-wide shipments also decreased 8 percent during the quarter and 4 percent year-to-date, while net sales decreased 3 percent during the quarter, to $60.6 million. However, the company’s year-to-date sales were still up 3 percent, to $104.9 million, something CBA attributed to shipment growth for its Kona and partner brands.

“Our year-to-date performance is largely in line with expectations,” CFO Joe Vanderstelt said via a press release. “We believe our plans for the balance of the year ensure CBA is well positioned to deliver on our objectives for 2017.”

For his part, CEO Andy Thomas said the company’s ability to grow sales ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO & KY: Boulder-based Fate Brewing Co. leases space for brewery in Louisville
Boulder-based Fate Brewing Co., plans to open a restaurant, tasting room and brewery in the Colorado Technology Center in Louisville, BizWest Media reported on August 1.

Fate Brewing, which will keep its flagship restaurant and brewery at 1600 38th St. in Boulder, leased 14,858 square feet at 1772 Prairie Way in the tech center.

Michael Lawinski, owner of Fate Brewing, said he hopes to have the operation in the tech center up and running by the end of this year. He said the main goal in the CTC is to boost production levels. The company has been brewing at capacity for almost two years, he said.

In a prepared statement, Lawinski said the company is “more than excited to continue its brewing production future in the city of Louisville. We are thrilled to be in the CTC and such a wonderful town, one that I have personally lived in since the early 2000s. I couldn’t be more excited than to pursue our fate, grow our business and dig our roots further into a place we call home.”

Fate Brewing was founded in Boulder in 2013 when it opened its brewpub on 38th Street.

In 2015, Fate Brewing acquired property at 5763 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Lookout Farm Brewing Company coming to Natick in September
A new brewery is coming to Natick and it’s somewhere familiar for cider lovers, Wicked Local Natick reported on August 1.

Lookout Farm Brewing Company will serve its first beers at Belkin Family Lookout Farm beginning on Sept. 8. The beer will be brewed in the same space as the Lookout Farm Hard Cider Company, owner Jay Mofenson said on August 1.

“The catalyst was really because the taproom has done tremendous business. It was up 70 percent last year from the year before,” said Mofenson. “We have had a lot of requests, ‘Why not beer?’”

The move makes sense on different levels, Mofenson said. Head cider maker Aaron Mateychuk was the head brewer at the now defunct Watch City Brewing Company in Waltham for many years before becoming the cider maker at Lookout Farm when they opened in the summer of 2015.

In addition, they recently hired an assistant brewer, Will Morris, who brewed at Barleycorn’s Craft Brew in Natick, the brew-on-premise in downtown Natick.

“Beer is right in Aaron’s wheelhouse and we’re really comfortable with Will,” said Mofenson. “It is a great opportunity for people to enjoy the property and it was a natural fit to add beer to what we already do ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Goat Patch Brewing Company now open in Colorado Springs
Goat Patch Brewing Company has opened in Colorado Springs, as of Monday, July 31. Owned by Justin and Jen Grant and Cate and Darren Baze, the Lincoln Center brewery has been on the beer enthusiasts’ radar for about a year. Brewer Darren, a veteran of Bristol, Trinity and Colorado Mountain breweries, says it's been "So far, so good", Colorado Springs Independent reported on August 1.

"People seem to like the beers… we did a bunch of soft openings to dial in the service," he adds. "I think that helped.”

Currently, the brewery offers six beers on tap. Their blonde and red ales are the first of their flagship brews. Baze says he's considering making their session IPA a flagship as well. They're also offering an unfiltered IPA, a porter, and an oddball beer they've dubbed Goat Patch Punch. It's a Belgian-style ale brewed with cherries and orange peels, fermented with a German-style hefeweizen yeast (best known for, when used traditionally, imparting banana and clove notes) and a Belgian saison yeast. It's notable also for being their only named beer.

“Eventually, if we get into packaging we might start naming them," explains Baze. "Everything we think of to name stuff, another beer’s already named ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: R. Shea Brewing Co. targeting downtown Akrton for new production brewery
R. Shea Brewing Co. is targeting Canal Place in downtown Akron as the site for its new production brewery and restaurant, Akron Beacon Journal reported on August 1.

The Akron nanobrewery, which hasn’t even celebrated its second anniversary yet, plans to open a 20-barrel brewery and eatery in the former B.F. Goodrich complex along South Main Street. It’s a $2.7 million project.

Founder and brewer Ron Shea hopes to be making beer in the new location next summer. He had announced his expansion plans last year but hasn’t talked publicly before about where.

The reason for the expansion is simple — R. Shea can’t seem to make enough beer at its current site in the city’s Merriman Valley neighborhood.

“Down in the valley, we have to turn people away because we are so small,” Shea said.

He also said it will be nice to have the time to refine the beers without worrying about releasing them so fast to keep up with demand.

The Canal Place location is more than 60,000 square feet, and with a much larger brewing system, Shea won’t have to worry about turning anyone away.

He envisions creating an industrial setting reminiscent of Rhinegeist Brewery in Cincinnati.

The taproom and restaurant, which will likely ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: District 96 Beer Factory launched in New City
New City residents who enjoy trying craft beer won't have to travel far to sip straight from the source anymore. The Rockland County hamlet now has its very own brewery, The Journal News reported on August 2.

District 96 Beer Factory is a bright, airy and beautifully appointed small-batch brew pub, offering a wide range of original ales and a menu of comforting, casual fare.

"We wanted to open up a place where locals could come and enjoy beer that has been made locally," said owner John Potenza, who was inspired to build out the brewery after he saw significant customer interest at his restaurant, The Burger Loft, next door. "We've had a lot of people over there who are beer drinkers but not craft beer drinkers and it's great to see them try it for the first time and make the switch."

But making his vision a reality took blood, sweat and tears.

"The building was originally a house-turned-pool business," he said, of the gut renovation to the District 96 taproom. "We cut the full floorplan open, dropped the equipment down in the back, put in the garage doors and storefront windows to let the light in. Then my partner found this ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Checkerspot Brewing opening in South Baltimore by the end of this year
On a sunny day in February, about a dozen brewers, writers, and beer aficionados gathered in the basement of a Patterson Park row home in Baltimore. There, they tapped kegs and casks of some experimental beers (like a milk stout fortified with crab shells) and each person scored the beers and wrote down their opinions on 3x5 cards.

Call it grassroots marketing, field research, or maybe the most fun focus group ever. This is part of the strategy behind Checkerspot Brewing, which is opening in South Baltimore by the end of this year. For the past 18 months, the team behind Checkerspot—Judy Neff, her husband Rob, and their partner Steve Marsh—have been hosting in-home taste tests, collaborating with established breweries, and strengthening their relationships with local farms as they prepare for the opening, the Baltimore Magazine reported on August 2.

"I am taking the leap to turn my passion into a career," says Judy, who has a Ph.D in microbiology and has been home-brewing for 12 years. "We thought the smartest approach was to get to know all the brewers in Maryland—work with them, get their advice and expertise. It's one of the few industries where there really is very little ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Peoria Brewing Company closing its doors for good next month
After three years in business, the Peoria Brewing Company will be closing its doors for the final time next month, Week.com reported on August 3.

Company officials confirmed the news on its Facebook page on August 2, saying the company will close September 12th.

It is unclear what will happen with the building, or why the Peoria Brewing Company is closing.

However, the Facebook post does mention that the building has been sold to current kitchen operator and area restauranteur Travis Mohlenbrink.

The Peoria Brewing Company opened back in September of 2014, and served craft beer made in house.

Brewery news USA, MA: Medusa Brewing Company could open another facility in Hudson
With the goal of further revitalizing downtown, Hudson town officials want to use the potential $5.5 million expansion of Medusa Brewery to shake loose some state grant money, the MetroWest Daily News reported on August 1.

Town officials plan to apply for a $2.5 million MassWorks grant to help fund reconstruction of the downtown rotary and improvements to South Street, which runs parallel to the thriving Main Street business community.

That’s the public part.

The private investment includes $5.5 million to expand the Medusa Brewing Company. The brewery has operated a taproom at 111 Main St. since March 2015 and plans to expand the operation to what is now a vacant lot at 1 Houghton St., according to town officials. The company has not yet submitted its plans to the town.

Hudson Planning and Community Development Director Jack Hunter mentioned the company’s plans at a Board of Selectmen meeting on July 31.

To bolster the town’s MassWorks application, Hunter hopes to get commitment letters from the owner of Medusa Brewery and Charles Randall, a real estate developer in town who was recently approved for a $5.5 million mixed-use development on South Street.

The brewery expansion and real estate development together represent $11 million in private projects ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Lion’s revenue and profitability drop as Australian beer market remains challenging
Japan’s Kirin-owned dairy and drinks group Lion has suffered a 9.5 per cent slide in first-half revenue and a 13 per cent drop in profitability as the Australian beer market remained challenging and it was forced to book an inventory revaluation at the start of the year due to lower milk prices, The Australian reported on August 4.

A shortage of oranges and a spike in prices for orange juice concentrate also hurt earnings for its non-alcoholic drinks business.

Driving the retreating sales and earnings was the termination of a distribution agreement with global brewer AB InBev for a number of key beer brands including Australia’s No 1 imported beer, Corona, and the sale of Lion’s wine arm, Fine Wine Partners.

The brewer is finding the A$14 billion Australian beer market tough going as drinkers turn away from traditional beers in favour of craft, or turn off beer completely.

While Lion has a strong portfolio of craft beers — including James Squire and Little Creatures, White Rabbit and Kosciuszko Pale Ale — growth wasn’t enough to counter the unfavourable conditions for its mainstream beers such as XXXX, Toohey’s and Hahn.

In a trading update on August 3, Lion said overall net revenue was down 9.5 ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Oriental Brewery fearing workers’ strike over wage increase negotiations
Oriental Brewery (OB) is struggling to complete wage negotiations as union workers demand more than what management is willing to offer, company officials said on August 3, Korea Times reports.

It is feared that the workers may go on strike if the talks continue to drag on, which would adversely affect the brewer's operations and tarnish its image.

Korea's largest brewer, which accounts for more than 50 percent of the beer market, is having a hard time concluding wage talks with union members who demand an 8 percent hike in base salary. But management is willing to increase the salary by 2.5 percent.

Unionized workers already voted in favor of a strike and since July 27, they have been staging a series of partial strikes at OB's three plants to put more pressure on management to accept their demands. But they have remained cautious about staging a full-scale walkout.

The brewer runs production lines in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, and Gwangju, employing about 2,000 people. Nearly 1,200 are union members.

In August the previous year, OB employees stopped working for 10 days, bringing the firm's three plants to a complete halt.

This first full-blown strike, since April 2014 when AB InBev acquired OB ...More info on site

Brewery news Ireland: New legislation allows craft breweries and distilleries to sell their products to visitors
The Irish government has approved legislation that will allow craft breweries and distilleries to sell their products to their visitors, BBC reported on July 27. The legislation, first proposed by the Labour Party, will now have to work its way through the Irish parliament. It would allow microbreweries sell their drinks on their premises between 10:00 and 18:00. Visitors would have to complete a guided tour of the brewery before they could buy its alcohol. Up until now, craft breweries and distilleries have needed a pub licence to sell their products to visitors. Under the Intoxicating Liquor (Breweries and Distilleries) Bill 2016, they will have to apply to the courts for a certificate before licences are granted. The licences will be subject to annual renewal. Alan Kelly, the Labour TD who introduced the bill, insists the move will encourage the growth of 'craft beer tourism' across the country. "I believe it's very important for Irish tourism to create a real visitor experience," he said. Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan said allowing visitors who have completed a craft brewery or distillery tour to purchase alcohol on the premises would "add to the visitor experience". "As was once the case many years ago, ...More info on site
