Canada, AB: Big Rock Brewery reports Q2 and H1 financial results
|
Big Rock Brewery Inc. on August 3 announced its financial results for the three and six months ended June 30, 2017.
"Big Rock continued to grow production volumes and gross profit during the second quarter of 2017," said Interim CEO Barbara Feit. "Sales of Big Rock's bottled and canned products increased in the quarter, particularly in Alberta. These increases were led by AGD, private label brands and the limited-edition Canada 150 Variety Pack, but also included increases in Big Rock's flagship Grasshopper and Traditional brands and newer brands such as Pilsner and Rhinestone Cowboy. Ontario also contributed to growth as the addition of the Etobicoke brewery in the fall of 2016 and Liberty Commons at Big Rock Brewery restaurant in early 2017 continued to gain a foothold in Canada's most populous province."
For the quarter ended June 30, 2017, compared to the second quarter of 2016, the company's:
• sales volumes increased by 9%, from 56,524 hectolitres ("hl") to 61,703 hl;

USA, WI: O'so Brewing Company to open new brewery in Stevens Point
|
O'so Brewing Company will be expanding in Stevens Point with a $2 million project within the next two years. Stevens Point City Council met in a special session on August 7, unanimously approving the plan, WAOW reported.
"I think it's going to be a fabulous project, O'so has had a 10 plus years history success in central Wisconsin, I think their expanding is a testament to that," said Stevens Point Mayor Mike Wiza.
Currently, O'so leases 12,000 sq/ft in Plover for their retail and manufacturing space along with 4,000 sq/ft in Stevens Point for storage.
The new location would be on County Highway HH just passed Brilowski Road in Stevens Point.
"I think the project is a good fit, we'll become a destination," said Wiza.
Big Thinker, LLC will be developing the project which includes a brewery, taproom and barrel aging cellar. The space will then be leased to O'so.
"Some of the things they're going to be doing in conjunction with the new project are a disc golf course, and a kickball course, and things like that, growing their own hops on site, it's a fabulous project," said Wiza.
The city will be selling Big Thinker, LLC 20 acres of land for $1 and providing a

USA, MA: Brewery Silvaticus heading towards September opening in Amesbury
|
Brewery Silvaticus is heading towards a September 2017 opening at 9 Water St. in the Carriage Mills complex in downtown Amesbury, reports the Globe, and while several local restaurants will carry Silvaticus beer on draft, the team “expect[s] to sell most of their product under their own roof.”
The taproom will serve full pints, plus crowlers to go, and there will be an outdoor beer garden on the Powwow River.
Per the Silvaticus website, the team “share[s] a deep respect for the traditional beers of Europe and our goal is to pay homage while innovating and adapting our craft to push it forward.” The focus will be on Belgian farmhouse ales and German-style lagers.
Two of the brewery’s four founders, Mark Zappasodi and Caroline Becker Zappasodi, own Tamarack Farmstead in Merrimacport, where they’ll grow their own hops for some Silvaticus beers, according to The Improper Bostonian.

USA, MA: River Styx Brewing opened by longtime home-brewing couple in downtown Fitchburg
|
Longtime home-brewers Scott and Jackie Cullen first had an idea to build their own beer production facility out of their basement. Months into a licensing process, they were denied permitting because the facility would have been located in a living space, Worcester Business Journal reported on August 4.
That step backward has turned out well for Fitchburg-area beer lovers. The couple opened River Styx Brewing last weekend at 166 Boulder Drive in downtown Fitchburg.
"We deliberated and decided to pursue our dream for a taproom and brewery," Jackie Cullen said.
River Styx opened with a four-day long-weekend grand opening, and will be open on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 to 11 p.m., Fridays from 3 to 11, Saturdays from noon to 11, and Sundays from noon to 8.
The idea for the name came from River Styx Road in Ashburnham, the road the couples takes home each day. They also figured a theme might help patrons to remember the name. River Styx, from Greek mythology, the River Styx is a boundary between the earth and the underworld.
The Fitchburg facility has 12 taps, with a mix of IPAs, stouts, farmhouse ales and a porter, which are available in full servings or as part of six-sample

USA, TX: Central District Brewing aiming to open in downtown Austin by the end of 218
|
Downtown Austin is getting a new brewery with Central District Brewing. It'll be found within the Austin Convention Center garage on 5th and Red River streets. The plans for the brewery, from owners Julie Ballato and Angela Duley, were approved last week by Austin City Council. It’s aiming to open by the end of 2018, Eater Austin reported on August 7.
“We want to create a community spot for locals and a space where travelers feel welcomed,” said Ballato of Central District Brewing. She and Duley dreamt of opening their own brewery since 2013, when they opened their company East Holly, LLC.
All Central District Brewing beers will be brewed on the property, with annual and seasonal European- and American-style beers. For those looking for non-alcoholic drinks, there will be root beer and tapped sparkling juices. The brewery will also offer tastings and classes on beer production and Austin’s brewing history.
Duley’s husband Adam will oversee the brewing operations. He brewed beers in Texas and France, as well as apprenticed at California’s The Lost Abbey and Port Brewing.
The downtown location is a prime spot for the brewery, with proximity to the convention center, the Rainey, Red River, and Dirty Sixth crowds, and it’s

USA, VA: State Street Brewing Co. planned for downtown Bristol in 2018
|
A new downtown brewery is planned for the long-vacant former Hayes Furniture building in downtown Bristol, Bristol Herald Courier reported on August 7.
State Street Brewing Co. is expected to open at 801 State St., once the two-story, 20,000-square-foot building has been rehabilitated and brewing equipment installed, according to new co-owner Debi Denney.
Denney and her husband, Larry Denney, recently acquired the property, which she calls the “best property” in downtown. They plan to lease to ground floor to their sons-in-law Kent and Kody Pierson, to establish and operate the brewery.
“Our sons-in-law were looking at places in Cincinnati and they came to look in Bristol,” Debi Denney said. “They looked at three or four spaces downtown, walked in here and fell in love with the space. It just felt right to them. Larry walked outside and said, ‘I cannot wait to start working on that place.’”
The Pierson twins, who currently live in Cincinnati but are relocating to the Twin City, have been brewing beer there for about eight years and sharing their product with friends.
“They’ve got their recipes down,” Larry Denney said.
The brewery is expected to open in 2018 and will join existing brewers Ken Monyak at Bristol Brewery on Cumberland Avenue

USA, MA: Untold Brewing being opened by siblings in Scituate
|
Until recently, Untold Brewing co-founder Kristin Greene was working in marketing in Google’s Cambridge office, Boston.com reported on August 5.
Her brother, brewery co-founder Matt Elder, had an office job, too. A couple years ago, Elder left his desk and moved to Seattle, where he began training as a professional brewer.
“I didn’t want to just take my home-brewing skills and jump right into it,’’ says Elder, who worked the evening shift at Georgetown Brewing Co. for a while to gain experience.
“I’d finish all the brews for the day, make sure the tanks were prepped for the next morning, close up the packaging line for the night,’’ says Elder. “The good thing about the evening shift is you have to do all of it, so you really get to learn.’’
While in Seattle, Elder met Kyle Hansen, another brewer at Georgetown, with whom he developed a business plan.
“That’s when the creative juices really started flowing,’’ says Elder, who recruited Hansen to come east and then lured Greene away from Google and back to their hometown of Scituate.
There are no breweries operating in Scituate or in neighboring towns such as Hingham and Cohasset. Anyone who’s trekked to the shore off Route 3 knows the

USA, OR: North Forty Brewery launching in Roseburg soon
|
After a hard day’s work, a group of friends stop by a local brewery and enjoy an evening full of laughter with a cold beer in hand. At least, that’s the vision R.J. Mills and Arin Forrest have for their craft brewing company, North Forty, NRToday.com reported on August 4.
The two Roseburg, OR natives went to Joseph Lane Middle School and became best friends there. Later, as teenagers, the two envisioned becoming entrepreneurs and owning a small business.
When Mills turned 21, he started making his own beer at as a way to hang out with friends and as a personal hobby. Now the two brew together, and after 17 years of home-brewing, Mills and Forest turned their dreams of owning a brewery into a reality.
In 2014, the company went “pro,” which is when the duo decided to move away from Portland and take their business to the heart of downtown Roseburg, on 435 SE Jackson St.
“We grew up in Roseburg,” Mills said. “Roseburg’s identity has set with us for a long time. That individual spirit, hard work and outdoors atmosphere is a core concept of North Forty.”
The two saw an opportunity to start a business five years ago, wanting to

USA, CA: Sacramento’s Rubicon Brewing shutting its doors after 30 years
|
A staple to the Midtown corridor, Sacramento’s Rubicon Brewing is shutting its doors after 30 years, CBS Sacramento reported on August 7.
“It’s a sad day,” said Pat Hannon who has been buying brews since the beginning.
For Hannon and fellow patrons, the Rubicon is much more than just a local pub.
“This was our living room,” he said.
Hannon said it’s an extension of the family. He brought his daughter in the day she was born to show his friends what he had made. She’s now 24.
“I started crying, to be honest. This was my childhood, man,” said Erin Hannon.
Some have been soaking up suds far longer than that.
“Since 1988,” said Marcus Nieto.
Rubicon Brewing Company opened its doors in 1987 in Midtown and later expanded its tap room to West Sacramento.
“The Rubicon is just a haven of great people. That’s what I love about this place. I’m really devastated that it’s not going to be around,” said another patron Marty Erickson.
The owner, Glynn Phillips, released the sad news on Facebook, both locations will close for good by the end of the month. He hasn’t yet said why, but loyal patrons say the competition in Sacramento has made it difficult.

Canada, PE: New brewery and pub planned for Summerside
|
The Journal-Pioneer reports that a Summerside restaurateur has announced plans to open a brewery and pub in one of the city’s landmark buildings.
Alex Clark, owner of OpenEats in downtown Summerside, has purchased the former railway station located just down the block from the restaurant, and plans to start work on converting it into a brewery this autumn.
The 90-year-old building at the corner of Water and Granville Streets fell into disuse following the shutdown of rail service on Prince Edward Island in the 1980s, but was reopened in the 1990s as a public library funded by the local Rotary Club. The building served this purpose for more than 20 years until the library’s move to a new location in late 2016 led to the city putting it up for sale.
While no timelines have been announced for the project, Clark has indicated that he plans to get the brewery up and running first, with distribution of the beer to local restaurants and events. The addition of an onsite pub will follow.

World: AB InBev among brewers focusing on alcohol-free beers
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev is among brewers focusing on alcohol-free beers as more consumers are looking for healthier drinks that won't affect their energy levels.
Heineken said last week that sales of its low and no-alcohol ranges grew by double digits in Europe, the Wall Street Journal reports. Heineken launched a zero-percent version of its signature brand in May.
Meanwhile, Anheuser-Busch InBev previously said it wants a fifth of its beer sales to come from low or no-alcohol brews by 2025, up from the current 7 percent. AB InBev previously committed $1 billion to efforts to reduce alcohol abuse and will spend much more than that on the development of new low alcohol products, of up to 3.5 percent alcohol, or no-alcohol products, containing 0.5 percent or lower.
According to the Wall Street Journal, the focus on alcohol-free beers is partly a public relations move, to show the brewers' commitment to responsible drinking, but also makes business sense. Alcohol-free beer sells at a similar price point to traditional brews and carries a lower tax.

Brazil: Craft beer sector boosted by exotic and regional products
|
Exotic and regional products are boosting the production of Brazil’s artisanal beers, a sector that offers unique sensorial experiences to consumers, but also faces the challenge of high taxation, Latin American Herald Tribune reported on August 5.
Artisanal breweries, which have gained strength in Brazil in the last 10 years, recorded growth of 17% per year, consolidating a new trend of consumption of products differentiated by flavors, quality and sensory qualities.
Regional fruits such as cupuaçu, passion fruit, tangerine and açai are now ingredients of artisanal beers in the north and northeast of Brazil.
Other ingredients include pineapple, pepper and mate, while in the states of Parana, São Paulo and Minas Gerais, the beverages’ flavors are complemented with mango, damiana flower, hibiscus, chestnuts, lemon, cashew, acerola and even coffee.
About 91% of the producers of these beers are in the south and southeast of the country – the most populated and developed regions of Brazil – according to data from the Institute of Beer.
The president of the Brazilian Association of Artisanal Beer (Abracerva), Carlo Giovanni Lapolli, highlighted the cultural aspect and influence of European immigrants in those regions as strengths for small-scale manufacturing.
On the other hand, Lapolli highlighted the growth of artisanal production in
