USA, CA: New Belgium Brewing purchasing assets of Magnolia Brewing Company
|
New Belgium Brewing Company has entered into an agreement to purchase the assets of San Francisco’s Magnolia Brewing Company, as a part of a bankruptcy proceeding. The majority stake will be owned by New Belgium, with minority stakes owned by Elysian Brewing founder Dick Cantwell and Belgian lambic producer Oud Beersel, Beer Street Journal reported on August 11.
Magnolia Brewing will continue to operate at both locations, with all beer brands and staff intact. Cantwell will assume the role of head of brewing operations, working alongside Magnolia founder Dave McLean.
Cantwell left Elysian Brewing in April of 2015, shortly after the brewery sold to Anheuser-Busch InBev. The role at Magnolia Brewing is his first in the beer industry since leaving Elysian.
“Brewing with friends” is how New Belgium characterizes this new partnership. The goal is to bring fresh brewing experience into the fold at Magnolia and advance the brand, not turn these locations into New Belgium pubs. In time, new beers will grace Magnolia’s lineup.
Oud Beersel’s role will be interesting. Eventually, the famed lambic producer will ship containers of their spontaneously fermented beer to San Francisco to blend with Magnolia’s beers. Oud Beersel has already worked with New Belgium and Brouwerij Boon on

USA, NY: Eli Fish Brewing Company under construction in downtown Batavia
|
A new brewery is being built up in downtown Batavia with a name that conjures up images of the city's past, 13WHAM-TV reported.
The Eli Fish Brewing Company is under construction in the former JJ Newberry Building at 109 Main Street. The name of the brewery pays homage to the man behind Fish's Malt House, a brewery in Batavia at Elm and Main Streets back in the 19th century.
The owner of the locally-renowned restaurant Alex's Place, Matthew Gray, is one of three Batavia natives behind the project. Jon Mager and Matthew Boyd, who are behind Buffalo Brothers Pizza and Wing Co. and involved in Alex's Place, are also in on the brewery.
“Eli Fish was a renaissance man who played an important role in the development and growth of early Batavia, and his entrepreneurial and rebuilding spirit really spoke to us,” Mager said.
Once open, Eli Fish Brewing will have 20 beers on tap - ten of which will be brewed in house and ten rotating beers from around New York State. Craft cocktails and wines from New York State wineries and distilleries will also be available.
The brewery is part of a $2.8 million mixed-use renovation; a restaurant incubator, known as FreshLAB, will

USA, WI: 1840 Brewing Company ready to welcome first patrons on August 11
|
After an unprecedented year in Milwaukee microbrewing in 2016 and a steady wave of breweries opening at the beginning of 2017 (including Westallion, Broken Bat, City Lights, Explorium, and Eagle Park), it seems as if there’s something of a lull in new beer makers throwing themselves into the suddenly-crowded market these days. Honestly, it’s been weeks since a new brewery has opened in Milwaukee! That brief period of relative inactivity will end this weekend with the official opening of 1840 Brewing Company, the Milwaukee Record reported on August 10.
Back in November, local media reported about the so-called “urban farmhouse brewery” coming to Bay View. Owners and husband-wife team Kyle and Stephanie Vetter will specialize in aged beers, some of which will use wort. After their projected spring opening came and went, 1840’s beer is finally ready to be tasted at the brewery’s first monthly tapping this weekend. The first VIP release will be Friday, August 11 from 5-8 p.m. (with another VIP event taking place between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 13). A public release of 1840’s inaugural beer will occur from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, August 12.
That first beer, “Little Daisies,” is a

Canada, ON: Avling Brewery keen on launching this year in Toronto neighbourhood
|
BlogTO reports that a new brewery and restaurant will be opening next year in Toronto’s Leslieville neighbourhood.
Avling Brewery is being founded by Max Meighen, a brewer and former chef who worked at several breweries in London, England before moving to Toronto.
Located in a former food distribution centre at 1042 Queen St. E. near Pape Ave., Avling will include not only a brewhouse and bar/restaurant, but also a rooftop garden that will be used to grow ingredients for the restaurant kitchen, with a portion allocated for a community garden.
Meighen tells BlogTO that he is “currently working on the recipes for their core range of beers, which will include a saison, IPA, lager, and a Baltic porter. They’ll be serving seasonal beers, as well as one-off brews for special occasions, with a focus on using Ontario-grown products.”
More details are expected to be announced as work progresses on the brewery.

USA, IA: Peace Tree Brewing Co. expected to open in Grinnell in early fall
|
If you like beer, you’ll love Grinnell’s newest addition to Main Steet – the Peace Tree Brewing Co., DesMoinesRegister.com reported.
The Grinnell branch is expected to open in early fall and will have 20-plus tap lines offering a number of different styles of beer.
“We’re really excited to be coming to Grinnell,” said Hannah Vander Veer, marketing associate for the company. “Grinnell is a great community.”
The Grinnell Branch, Vander Veer said, is the third branch to be developed by the company. The Knoxville Taproom is the original location for Peace Tree Brewing Co. and is where they bottle their beer for distribution throughout Iowa and parts of Nebraska.
There are also the Des Moines Branch and the Root Cellar, also in Knoxville.
The Grinnell location will be very similar in style, Vander Vee said, to the other locations.
The flagship beers that are waiting to be tasted in Grinnell include Red Rambler Ale, Kiss from a Gose (a tart ale), Blonde Fatale and No Coast IPA. They will also have seasonal flavors throughout the year.
Can’t decide? Sampler’s are available – small glasses of some particular beers.
“Usually, if someone wants a little taste of a certain beer, we’ll give them a little to try,” Vander Vee

Bobcaygeon Brewing has announced that it has signed a lease with Parks Canada to open a physical brewery in an historic building in its namesake Ontario town, Canadian Beer News reported.
Located at 15 Bolton St. near Lock 32 in downtown Bobcaygeon, the building was constructed in 1932, and served as the community’s post office for many years. More recently, it has been home to A Special Place, a free clothing charity that shut down last year.
“We are excited to be working with Parks Canada to fulfill our original goal of building our brewery in Bobcaygeon and producing our beer here,” said Richard Wood, president and co-founder of Bobcaygeon Brewing, in a statement. “We look forward to a strong long-term relationship with Parks Canada and the community to promote both craft beer and economic development in Bobcaygeon and the surrounding areas.”
Construction on the new facility, which will include a brewery, retail store, and taproom, is set to start this autumn, with plans to open in 2018. USA, ME: Ebenezer’s Brewpub closed and is for sale
|
Ebenezer’s Brewpub on Pleasant Street has closed and is for sale, The Forecaster reported on August 10.
“The place is closed. And we may or may not re-open it,” co-owner Chris Lively said over the phone on August 7.
By August 9, the business was advertised for sale as a turnkey brewpub, for $255,000. A new owner gets the brewing equipment, assumes the building lease, and will be offered the opportunity to buy recipes and provide beer for Lively’s other business, Ebenezer’s Pub in Lovell.
Just a mile away, meanwhile, a new brewery is getting ready to launch later this year.
Plans for a downtown brewery advanced on August 7 when the Town Council adopted a new zoning ordinance that will now allow breweries in the district without being part of a restaurant.
Mattie Daughtry and Philip Welsch, the business partners behind the venture, said they hope to open Moderation Brewing within the next six months.
Daughtry, who is also the state representative in House District 49, said on August 7 the pair purchased the commercial building at 103 Maine St. last week in anticipation of the council action. Their business plan is modeled around the downtown location, where they hope to snare pre-dinner pedestrians and

Vietnam: Analysts believe now is the right time for government to sell its stake in Sabeco
|
Analysts believe that now is the right time for the state to divest Sabeco shares because the shares are going for a good price, VietNamNet Bridge reported on August 10.
Sabeco will step up selling the State capital in this firm in 2017 as requested by the Government.
A representative of Sabeco, the largest brewer in Vietnam, said Sabeco has chosen a consultancy firm for the process.
Nguyen Hoang Hai, deputy chair of the Vietnam Association of Financial Investors (VAFI), commented that the state’s divestment would only partially depend on the consultant, as it is the sales method that will determine the success of the transaction.
Sabeco should implement equitization quickly to grab the opportunity to sell at high prices, he said. If the State remains undecided, it will lose billions of dollars.
"It is necessary to organize auctions and sell its stake soon,” Hai added.
“If the State wants to sell its stake at high prices, it should sell all the 90 percent stake once. The sale must be done in a transparent and open way which will attract the highest possible number of buyers,” he said.
Hai stressed the principle of transparency in selling the state’s stake, i.e. shares will be sold to those who

India: United Breweries introducing five imported beer brands from parent Heineken in India
|
United Breweries Ltd, the maker of Kingfisher beer, is in the process of introducing five imported beer brands from its Dutch parent Heineken NV in India, challenging Anheuser-Busch InBev—currently the market leader for imported beers, Livemint reported on August 10.
UB has introduced these brands—Sol, Edelweiss, Affligem, Dos Equis and Desperados—in select markets a month ago and is now expanding to other markets, marketing head Samar Singh Sheikhawat said.
“We are very hopeful that with these five brands, we will have a solution for a consumer set who is looking for these offerings and did not find an answer in the UB portfolio. There is a growing market for this, a profitable market,” Sheikhawat.
UB—India’s largest beer maker—aims to capture a fourth of India’s imported beer market with these five brands, Sheikhawat said. Before these brands were launched, UB had no presence in that segment.
The new brands are expected to help UB expand its portfolio, enter a fast-growing segment, and partially offset the slowdown in the wider beer market. Of the five beers, Sol will take on Corona from Anheuser-Busch InBev.
Apart from Corona, which has a market share of around 49% in imported beers, Anheuser-Busch InBev also sells Hoegaarden (about 27%) and Stella

India: Vijay Mallya no longer director of United Breweries Ltd
|
United Breweries Ltd (UBL) said on August 10 its Chairman Vijay Mallya has ceased to be director of the company following market regulator Sebi's order against him, Press Trust of India reported.
On January 25 this year Sebi had restrained Mallya from holding position as director or key managerial personnel of any listed company which has not been vacated till date, UBL said in a regulatory filing.
"The board at its meeting held today (August 10) has authorised filing of requisite forms/intimations with the Registrar of Companies and other authorities notifying Vijay Mallya's cessation from holding position of director in the company," it said.
In January, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) had restrained Mallya and six others from the securities market and also from "buying, selling or otherwise dealing in securities in any manner whatsoever, either directly or indirectly" till further directions.
The market regulator's order was issued close on the heels of CBI naming Mallya, Kingfisher Airlines and eight others in a chargesheet related to loan default case.
Mallya, whose now-defunct Kingfisher Airlines owes more than Rs 9,000 crore (including interest) to various banks, had fled India on March 2, 2016.
The CBI has two cases against him - one related to

Namibia: Namibia Breweries Limited is taking its barley project to the next level
|
Namibia Breweries Limited is taking its barley project to the next level with the very ambitious target to grow 60,000 tonnes of barley annually within the next ten years. Going by the yields of the first two seasons, some 12,000 hectares under irrigation will be required, Namibia Economist reported on August 9.
Talking about the issues of investment and innovation, the Ohlthaver & List Group Director for Corporate Affairs, Gideon Shilongo, told a local television channel the proven demand for unmalted barley by Namibia Breweries, a subsidiary of the group, is 40,000 tonnes. However, the breweries can absorb another 20,000 tonnes of unmalted barley for its new product, King Lager.
Bringing innovation into the equation, Shilongo said the barley pilot project which yielded 1,200 tonnes from 400 hectares, provided them with a raw material, too little to go into their mainstream brewing operations, but still too valuable to be used as animal fodder. This lead to the idea of brewing small quantities of unmalted beer using the local harvest. This beer is now marketed as King Lager.
If Namibia Breweries Limited can find the land to supply in their own barley requirements, it will create another 2500 jobs in agriculture. “In 2016 alone,
