USA, MI: Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery & Supply to open new Ada location by the end of the year
|
Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery & Supply will have a new Ada location by the end of the year, MLive.com reported on August 14.
The brewery plans to relocate to a new building near the corner of Ada Drive and Fulton Street next to the new Kingma's Market.
The new location, at 452 Ada Drive, will feature a larger taproom, expanded tap offerings, food and extensive on-site brewery capacity. The 2,500-square-foot brewery will also include a 75-seat indoor taproom and an outdoor patio offering up to 50 seats.
Gravel Bottom will continue operations at 418 Ada Drive until its new site is complete by the end of the year.
"We have built a great following in Ada and look forward to helping make Ada a destination as we continue to support local events like Beers at the Bridge, Brats and Bonfires and the Ada Chili Cook-Off." said Matt Michiels, owner of Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery & Supply, in a statement.
With the new space, Gravel Bottom will upgrade its brewing equipment and expand craft beer choices.
"We are adding a small kitchen as well, which will allow us the opportunity to pair our beers with food and provide our customers with an enhanced craft beer experience," Michiels

USA, MA: Greater Good Imperial Brewing Co. to open own brewery in Worcester early in 2018
|
Greater Good Imperial Brewing Co., a contract brewer, is planning to open a 10,000-square-foot brewery and taproom on Millbrook Street in Worcester early next year, the Worcester Business Journal reported on August 15.
The beer makers have broken ground on a 10,000-square-foot space in an industrial building at 55 Millbrook St. Demolition has begun to prepare the space, which should open in the first quarter.
The company brews in Williamsburg under contract with Brewmasters Brewing Services using a 120-barrel system - a large operation for a brewery without a location.
Contract brewers hire another brewery to brew and package their beer for them, but the beer remains owned by the brewer.
What began as a home brewing operation has quickly turned into a large business.
"I told everyone for the last two years that we're a small company that makes big beers," Wengender said. "But, we're growing."
The new sprawling location will more than accommodate the growing company, which was using a 15-barrel system just one year ago.
The company specializes in brewing imperial beers, meaning the alcohol percentage ranges from 9 to 12.
"I wanted to make beer that I prefer to drink," said founder Paul Wengender.
Wengender and head brewer Shaun Radzuik began contract brewing almost two

|
The Okotoks Western Wheel reports that after several months of construction delays, a new brewery is aiming to open later this year in Black Diamond, a small town southwest of Calgary in southern Alberta.
Hard Knox Brewery is being founded by siblings Pamela and Cory Lyken, who have hired brewmaster Issac Privett who plans to use as many local ingredients as possible in his beers.

The Simcoe Reformer reports that the first craft brewery in Ontario’s Haldimand County will be opening this autumn in the village of Jarvis.
Concession Road Brewing is being launched by Jeff and Shannon Bunton, a married couple who live in nearby Cayuga. Located in a former firehall at 17 Talbot St. E. in Jarvis, the brewery is being established using equipment purchased from Mash Paddle Brewing in Brantford.
The Buntons tell the paper that they have several beers in development, including a line of flavoured saisons to be released under the Saison du Monde series, a brown ale called Downtown Betty Brown, and an IPA.

USA, IN: The Vincennes Brewing Company to open its doors on August 18
|
The Grand Opening of one of Vincennes’ most highly anticipated businesses is less than a week away, WVUT reported on August 14.
The Vincennes Brewing Company was revealed by Chris and Patti Coffey of Monroe City back in February. The Coffeys will be partnering with William and Charlie Bedwell to specialize in locally-brewed and Indiana craft beers.
The idea started when Chris Coffey began brewing his own beer as a hobby. Now, he wants to move his hobby to a bigger scale.
The brewing company is set to be a small-batch operation, which will allow them to constantly change and create new recipes. The plan is for the company to produce about 300 barrels of beer per year. The bar itself will have 14 different beers on tap.
The Vincennes Brewing Company, located at 124 Main Street, is set to open with a ribbon cutting at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 18.

Canada, BC: Red Bird Brewing now open, house-brewed beers to be on tap by the end of August

USA, FL: AB InBev-funded Veza Sur Brewing opening in Wynwood on August 19
|
The maker of Busch beer is supporting the startup of a new brewery in Wynwood this week.
Veza Sur Brewing is set to open Saturday, August 19 in a 10,000-square-foot space at 55 Northwest 25 Street, The Real Deal Magazine reported.
Veza Sur Brewing is the first South Florida brewery that beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev has funded as part of a national push to create or acquire craft-style beer brands.
Veza Sur’s Wynwood location is several blocks away from Concrete Beach Brewing, which is backed by Boston Beer Company.
A trio is opening Veza Sur: Chris and Jeremy Cox of 10 Barrel Brewing Co. in Oregon, and Berny Silberwasser of Bogota Beer Company.
A taproom will account for half of their Wynwood space, which will feature a 40-foot bar and customer views of the on-site brewery in operation.
Asbjorn Gerlach, owner Kross Brewery in Chile, is the brewmaster at Veza Sur, which will brew on a 15-barrel system and will serve 18 types of beer.

USA, OH: Blank Slate Brewing Co. owner explains sudden closure
|
Blank Slate Brewing Co., housed in Cincinnati's East End, abruptly closed on Aug. 7. Now its founder is talking about why he decided to shutter the long-running brewery, Cincinnati Business Courier reported on August 10.
Scott LaFollette wrote in the Blank Slate blog that the brewery had run out of money.
"There is no big conspiracy, no secret takeover, no legal troubles or personal issues," he wrote. "We simply don’t have enough cash to keep going."
LaFollette wrote that Blank Slate was built and funded by himself on a shoestring budget. He said he went without a salary and never personally made a dime.
"There have been at least a half-dozen times through the years that I thought we were going to have to go out of business but I always managed to cobble together enough money to pay the bills," he wrote. "I was determined that we would succeed doing things 'the right way”' by putting the product above all else and growing business honestly and organically, on our own, by our rules, and without outside influences."
That being said, he realized the need to expand and took on funders in 2015 to grow the brewery's capacity. But by the time that was in

Latvia: Aldaris brewery’s turnover down 1.5% due to market contraction last year
|
Latvian brewery Aldaris closed 2016 with EUR 25.857 million in turnover, down 1.5% from a year before, while its losses expanded by 21.6% year-on-year to EUR 3.178 million, writes LETA, according to information available at Firmas.lv.
The company’s management put down the turnover decrease to the 6.2% contraction of the Latvian beer market. The growth of the company’s losses was also blamed on the reduced market and the decision to give up the rights to distribute products of the Baltika brand.
In 2016, Aldaris commanded 26.1% of the Latvian beer market, according to the management’s report. Last year, Aldaris sold 42.6 million litres of beer, down 1.4% from 2015.
At the same time, Aldaris has been strengthening its position in other beverage segments like beer cocktails, cider, alcoholic cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. “One of the main non-beer brands is Somersby cider, which has been showing great success across the world,” the Aldaris management said.
In 2015, Aldaris reported a turnover of EUR 26.244 million, down 8.3% from 2014, and cut its loss by 23.3% to EUR 2.614 million.

Rwanda: Rwanda’s largest brewer Bralirwa reports 3.8% dip in half-year profit
|
Rwanda’s largest brewer and soft beverages company Bralirwa’s half year profit has dipped by 3.8 per cent to Rwf41.3 billion, from Rwf43 billion recorded in the same period last year, The New Times reported, citing the firm’s financial statement.
The beverages firm attributed the drop to ‘challenging times’ as its sales volumes went down by about 15.4 per cent. In the first half of this year, Bralirwa sold 751,000 hectolitres compared to 888 hectolitres in the first six months of 2016, the report for the year ended June 30, 2017 shows.
The firm noted that sales volume decreased largely due to soft drink and beer price increases it implemented in August 2016 and January this year, respectively.
With increasing competition in the local market, this hurt sales leading to low revenues being registered over the reporting period, it added.
The firm explained that the price increase was necessary to compensate for rising fixed costs, such as the “high cost of raw materials which had to be passed to the consumers”.
However, Victor Madiela, the Bralirwa managing director, said the firm has implemented price and mix management, as well cost management initiatives to cope with the challenges in the business environment and stay competitive.
“Our sales volumes

Belgium & UK: Belgian brewers entering the UK market despite Brexit uncertainties
|
The U.K.’s impending departure from the European Union has been blamed for weakening the pound, putting London banking jobs in danger and curtailing economic growth. Now it’s putting at risk a fledgling attempt to bring the complexities of Belgian beer to British drinkers, Bloomberg reported on August 16.
Twenty beer makers from Belgium, which is home to six of the world’s 11 Trappist breweries, descended on London last month to showcase their brands at the inaugural Ales Tales Belgian Beer Festival, where they are seeking to strengthen their foothold in the U.K. market.
About a thousand people lined up to taste the hops and barley concoctions just four months after the U.K. announced its intention to leave the bloc, which precipitated a 5 percent drop in the pound and the longest fall in consumer spending in more than four years. And since negotiations still haven’t started on Britain’s future relationship with the EU, businesses are left guessing what a trade partnership would look like, raising the spectre of new tariffs and questioning the reliability of international supply chains. But some brewers are still willing to take the risk.
“I have no clue about what will happen, but it makes no sense to wait,”

Russia: Craft brewing expanding in Russia
|
Pint by frothy pint, a hoppy revolution is brewing in Russia, the Associated Press reported on August 14.
This new generation of craft brewers began sprouting in the vodka capital of the world as foreign beers became too expensive and beer fans sought alternatives to mass-produced lagers. From juicy IPAs to velvety stouts and lip-smacking sours, beers served at breweries that opened in recent years in cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg offer visitors and locals alike the styles popularized in the last two decades by the craft beer boom in the U.S. and Europe.
Many breweries started after the currency collapse of 2014, when imported beer prices skyrocketed and supply fell.
“There was almost nothing being brought from outside,” said Alex Korobkov, co-owner of the Zagovor brewery and the RULE Taproom in central Moscow. “So people decided to brew something they had tried outside of Russia.”
Korobkov and a group of friends started Zagovor — which translates to “Conspiracy” in Russian — in 2014.
Today, there are over 100 craft breweries in Russia, said Nikita Filippov, co-founder of AF Brew in St. Petersburg, founded in 2012 and one of the craft beer pioneers in Russia. But Filippov said only around two dozen breweries have
