Brewery news USA, NB: Green Flash Brewing Co. announces plans for a third location in Nebraska
Less than one year after opening doors to their second brewery on the east coast, Green Flash Brewing Co. announces they are expanding into the Midwest and opening a third location in Lincoln, Nebraska, Sioux City Journal reported on August 17.

They have purchased a 10,000-square-foot production facility and tasting room with a restaurant in the Nebraska state capital, and will join Lincoln’s burgeoning craft beer community.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports the brewery has purchased the city's recently closed Ploughshare Brewing Company. Terms of the deal were undisclosed, according to the newspaper.

The new brewery was purchased intact, and Green Flash expects the tasting room, restaurant, and brewhouse to be open and operating by the end of this year.

Upon opening, Green Flash will be able to offer fresh beer with regional prices in the Midwest, and will focus on the consumer connection in their Lincoln tasting room. The move reveals Green Flash's long-term strategy to increase their strength as a national brand by establishing regional footholds in key cities across the United States.

“We hope to become a local favorite in our new Nebraska home,” said Mike Hinkley, Co-Founder of Green Flash Brewing Co. “And we're excited to be closer to our fans ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MD: Guinness gains license for its Baltimore County brewery
A year away from its opening, the Baltimore County liquor board has granted a license to the Guinness Open Gate Brewery & Barrel House, Baltimore Business Journal reported on August 16.

The plans for the new brewery— the first by Guinness in the U.S. in more than six decades — were unveiled in January. Details are still being finalized and local contractor Plano-Coudon was hired in the late spring by Diageo Beer Co. USA to build the brewery to be located in Relay. The $50 million Guinness project is expected to bring in 300,000 visitors each year to the county's southwest corner. This week, the Board of Liquor License Commissioners for Baltimore County unanimously approved an on-premise consumption permit for the new taproom. The development is expected to create 70 new jobs.

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz said the license "is a key next step in creating a world-class tourist destination" and investment in the county.

The permit granted was a new "Class 5" license, modified during legislation that moved through the General Assembly earlier this year that would allow breweries in the state additional capacity to sell beer that is brewed on-site at their taprooms.

“We are excited to open up our brewery next ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Husband-and-wife team launching Altruist Brewing Co. in Sturbridge
The husband-and-wife team of the Altruist Brewing Co. in Sturbridge are set to open their brewery and taproom in the fall. Once open, Bob and Nancy Bixby will join the 140 or so other breweries in the state and a craft beer market that is growing exponentially. Currently, the couple is not selling their beer to stores in an effort to remain as local as possible and grow organically. Worcester Business Journal talked to them on August 15.

Have you looked into distribution yet?

Nancy: That's not something that we have immediate plans to do. We're just so small, and we're looking to grow organically. If you're just doing distribution, it's going to be really hard to grow, and honestly you don't have a lot of every can that you make. It's a lot of work, and there isn't enough to invest back into the business. We're hoping to be able to invest a significant portion of what we make right back in so we can grow organically.

Bob: People ask why we don't do the Charlton-based Tree House Brewing Co. model. Honestly, I had no real interest. I like to talk beer with people, so I want a place where people can ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: South Beach Brewing Company preparing to debut this fall in Miami Beach
When South Beach Brewing Company debuts this fall in Miami Beach, beers that taste like brunch cocktails will dominate the brewpub’s menu, which touts flavors such as Strawberry Orange Mimosa, South Peach Shandy and Blood Orange Sunset IPA, SouthFlorida.com reported on August 15.

The idea to pair ales with an afternoon plate of eggs comes from South Beach Brewing Company founder Lorenzo Borghese, who’s no stranger to the touristy vibes along the city’s Collins Avenue drag. A cosmetics and dog-grooming entrepreneur and scion of a wealthy family from Milan, Italy, Borghese in 2006 starred in the ninth season of ABC’s “The Bachelor."

But Borghese says he intends to downplay his reputation at his 2,200-square-foot brewpub, which will feature a nanobrewery and dining area. The location, which he says is still being finalized, will be south of Fifth Street in Miami Beach.

“I didn’t want people to think I’m just some trust-fund kid who likes to party and wanted to open a brewery in South Beach,” Borghese, 45, said. “I want this to be about positivity, not about my family. I want this to be about beer and hanging out with your friends.”

Still, the brewpub, along with its brunch-inspired brews, has attracted one blue-chip ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Competition watchdog approves Heineken’s acquisition of Punch Taverns' British pubs
British competition watchdog CMA approved Heineken's acquisition of Punch Taverns' British pubs. The Dutch brewer made sufficient concessions to remove competition concerns, the CMA decided, ANP reported on August 18.

The supervisor found 33 locations where the competition between pubs would be affected by Heineken taking over the Punch Taverns pubs. Heineken then submitted proposals to sell the pubs involved.

Heineken is paying 305 million pounds, about 347 million euros, for the 1,900 Punch Taverns pubs. The Dutch brewer already owns over a thousand pubs in Britain under the name Star Pubs & Bars. The new pubs will be integrated into that brand. With the acquisition, Heineken will be the second biggest pub operator in Britain, according to the news wire.

Brewery news Ethiopia: Tribunal dismisses suit against Heineken
Ethiopian Trade Practices & Consumer Protection Authority’s tribunal has dismissed a suit instigated by Meta Abo Brewery S.C. against Heineken Breweries. This was following both parties failed to appear for the second time, 2merkato reported on August 17.

It was back in June 2017 that Meta filled its pleading claiming that Heineken hoarded its bottles and crates for more than a year. The pleading further noted that the company lost its competitive edge along with 9 million Birr.

The defendant was summoned by the court to present its statement of defence by July 27, 2017. Nevertheless, Heineken failed to do so and also failed to appear on the adjourned hearing date. Following this the tribunal ordered fresh summons to be served to the defendant and to appear on August 11, 2017.

For the hearing day, it was also Meta that failed to appear before the tribunal. And following this, the tribunal dismissed the suit as per the Civil Procedure Code of Ethiopia.
