India: Vijay Mallya's United Breweries shares worth Rs 100 crore transferred to central government
|
The Stock Holding Corporation of India Ltd (SHCIL) has transferred the title and rights of shares worth Rs 100 crore of United Breweries Ltd (UBL), held directly and indirectly by Mallya, to the central government, Business Today reported on September 18.
According to a report in The Indian Express, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had written to SHCIL directing the depository to transfer the title and rights of un-pledged shares of UBL, United Spirits Ltd (USL) and McDowell Holdings Ltd worth close to Rs 4,000 crore, held by Mallya and his associate firms, under section 9 of the PMLA.
The agency has attached 4 crore unpledged shares of UBL, 25.14 lakh shares of USL and 22 lakh shares of McDowell Holdings of Mallya, and some private companies allegedly linked to him, the report said.
In September last year, the Enforcement Directorate had issued an attachment order for worth Rs 6,630 crore against beleaguered businessman Vijay Mallya.
Under section 9 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) rules, after an order of confiscation, all the rights and title in such property 'shall vest absolutely in the Central Government free from all encumbrances.'
In February, a special court had confirmed the Enforcement Directorate order to attach Rs

Thailand: New excise taxes favour higher-priced beer
|
New excise taxes in Thailand have affected prices across industries ranging from beverages to cars, with the new tax regime causing higher prices for some items but lower prices for others, The Straits Times reported on September 17.
Thailand's Excise Department expects to collect additional tax revenue of 12 billion baht (S$487 million) from the changes.
New excise taxes will cause "moderate" rises in the prices of alcoholic beverages, sugary drinks and cigarettes, the director general of the Excise Department, Somchai Poolsavasdi, said on September 16.
It may also cause a small rise in prices for imported cars and cars manufactured in customs-free zones. Somchai told a press conference that the new taxes rates would be effective immediately.
The price of many items would not increase and some items would be taxed less, he said. Some producers might absorb rising costs for products facing high market competition, he said, but in any case consumers would not pay much more for these products. The new excise system is based on the retail price, while the previous system was based on ex-factory or CIF (cost, insurance and freight) prices.
"The new tax system will be more transparent and just as it is based on only the suggested

Bulgaria: Kamenitza breaks ground for multi-functional complex including craft brewery in Plovdiv
|
Bulgarian brewer Kamenitza, part of U.S.-based Molson Coors Brewing Company, broke ground for a 2 million euro ($2.4 million) multi-functional complex in Plovdiv on September 19, the economy ministry said.
The investment in the Kamenitza Brewery project will create 50 new jobs, the ministry said in a statement.
Last month, Kamenitza sold 30,500 sq m of land in the central part of Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second largest city, to two local companies which plan to develop a mixed-use project there. The plot of land used to be the site of a Kamenitza brewery.
Kamenitza retained ownership of an adjacent 3,500 sq m plot of land on which it will develop the multi-functional complex that will include a craft beer microbrewery and a museum, and is expected to be completed in 2018.

Australia: Heineken 3 captures almost a third of Australia’s premium mid-strength beer market
|
The 3.3%-abv Heineken 3 has captured almost a third of the Australian premium mid-strength beer market since its launch last year, Heineken has said.
The beer, which is the focus of a new marketing campaign in Australia, accounted for 31% of July sales in the premium mid-strength category, according to scanner data cited by Heineken on September 20. The brand also has a 21% awareness level with 18-65-year-old consumers and a 79% repurchase rate.
Heineken said the performance "exceeded our expectations", adding that the awareness levels were "great for a product that has only been in the Australian market for 12 months".
Heineken 3 was launched exclusively in Australia in August last year and is a low-carb and calorie beer that aims to recruit female drinkers with a more health-conscious message. According to Heineken, the international premium mid-strength segment grew by 60% in Australia in 2016.

China & South Korea: Popularity of China’s Tsingtao beer sharply up in South Korea despite diplomatic row
|
Sales of China's Tsingtao beer have risen sharply in South Korea in recent months despite South Korean firms being hit by Beijing's retaliation against Seoul for the deployment of a US missile defence system on its soil, industry sources said on September 19.
Beijing insists the installation of the Terminal Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) will undermine China's security interests, although Seoul says it is to defend against North Korean provocations, not aimed at China.
The Chinese government has shut down many Lotte outlets in China, citing violations of fire safety regulations while banning imports of Korean pop culture content and the sale of tour packages to South Korea.
E-Mart, South Korea's largest discount chain, said sales of Chinese beer Tsingtao surged 28.8 percent for the first eight months in 2017 compared to a year earlier.
Tsingtao emerged as the fourth-largest imported beer brand during the period.
Imports of Chinese beer surged more than seven times to 36,159 tons, worth $26.3 million, last year from 4,836 tons in 2010, with Tsingtao accounting for most of the imported Chinese beer, according to figures from the Korea Customs Service (KCS).
Tsingtao sales have increased recently due mainly to the growing popularity of lamb skewers consumed together with Tsingtao

Mexico: AB InBev to urge Mexicans to become beer store owners at home rather than crossing the US border illegally
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev will urge Mexicans who plan to cross the border into the U.S. to become undocumented workers to stay - and become small business owners running beer stores, AdAge.com reported on September 18.
AB-owned beer giant Grupo Modelo was looking for a way to turn Modelorama, its neglected retail chain, into a powerful national brand when Donald Trump's rants about building a wall between the U.S. and Mexico struck a chord.
"We said 'that's a great opportunity,'" says Daniel Haskell, business unit head of Modelorama. "Why don't we launch the brand through an initiative that lets people know in an impactful way that they don't have to go to the other side of the wall to find opportunity?"
Grupo Modelo has 8,000 Modelorama beer stores across Mexico and is opening two or three a day, which amounts to 900 so far this year and 873 in 2016. It costs between $4,000 and $20,000 to be smuggled into the U.S. from Mexico, but only about $5,000 to become a Modelorama franchisee, Haskell says.
Modelorama's new agency Anonimo dispatched well-known documentary filmmaker Juan Carlos Rulfo to the border to make a short film to be distributed online that illustrates the plight of workers who leave

India: Newly appointed Mahou India CEO believes in huge growth potential of India’s beer market
|
Fernando Bustamente, the newly appointed CEO of Mahou India, a subsidiary of Mahou San Miguel, spoke with BW Hotelier about his plans for the company in India. Bustamente takes over from Erik d’Auchamp, who moves on as International Managing Director.
Speaking about his journey so far, Bustamante said, “I feel extremely proud to be a part of Mahou San Miguel, a 126 year old Spanish brewing major and market leader in Spain. 26 years of experience, off and on trade business in Spain will hold me in very good stead, in my role to lead the company’s operations in India.”
Bustamante believes that the Indian market, by virtue of being culturally and geographically diverse, offers a great learning experience and has got a huge growth potential.
The Indian beer market is growing rapidly. In the data shared by Bustamante, it says during 2010-2015 period, the compound annual growth rate in terms of volume was 8.2 per cent, reaching 25 million hl in sales. The projections show a target of 33 million hl by 2020.
Relating to the data shared by him, Bustamante stated, “There is definitely space for new players, and as a new player, we will find our space in the market

Carlsberg Malawi Limited has raised the prices of its alcoholic drinks Carlsberg Stout, Green and Special, the Nyasa Times reported on September 19.
“Carlsberg Malawi would like to inform its valued customers that effective from 18 September, 2017 it will adjust prices of its 330ml Carlsberg beer range,” a statement from the company said
According to the new price structure, imbibers will have to dig deeper into their pockets as Carlsberg Green in a 300 ml bottle is now at K600 from K500.

It is understood the price increase is due to rising cost of raw materials and transport.

United Arab Emirates: Craft beer being increasingly offered at Dubai’s bars and restaurants
|
At Dubai’s Black Tap restaurant, the Americana doesn’t stop at the hamburgers cooking on the grill or hip hop pumping from the speakers. It’s also being poured out, one pint at a time, The West Australian reported on September 19.
The new restaurant stocks Dubai’s most-extensive selection of American craft beer, part of a major $US23.5 billion ($30 billion) market for customers wanting a different style of ale.
It represents a new scene for Dubai, long known as the Manhattan of the Mid East, with chic skyscraper bars serving the fanciest of cocktails while the typical tap offers only the standard lagers.
That’s starting to change, with establishments like Black Tap and Dubai’s two main distributors increasingly stocking American craft beer, breaking new ground among Gulf Arab nations, several of which ban alcohol sales entirely.
“In such an eclectic city, we should have such an eclectic range of beers to accommodate instead of just the same beers that you can get all around the world,” said Eric Ballard, the group beverage manager for Sunset Hospitality, which runs Black Tap.
For wine aficionados, teetotallers or those otherwise unaware, a craft brewery is a small, independent beer producer. After World War II, American beer production largely came

Argentina: Up to 40 thousand ha of barley could be lost due to heavy rains this month
|
Up to 150 thousand ha of wheat and 40 thousand ha of barley could be lost in Argentina following heavy rain, according to the Buenos Aries Grain Exchange (BAGE).
While tentative due to difficulty assessing the situation, such area losses could reduce production, the analysts said.
BAGE initially estimated that 5.5 mln ha of wheat and 0.8 mln ha of barley were planted for 2017/18. Further heavy rain, forecast throughout the reminder of September, could worsen the situation and could also likely delay early maize planting in the Buenos Aires and Santa Fe regions.

Canada: Drop in production gives some support to feed barley prices
|
A 16.8 per cent drop in the size of Canada’s barley crop has given feed barley prices some support, according to an industry-watcher in Alberta, Manitoba Co-Operator reported on September 19.
“The market is looking fairly strong,” said Allan Pirness of Market Place Commodities in Lethbridge. “It’s made things a little firmer for new-crop feed grain.”
Wet weather in the spring delayed seeding in many areas so there were already expectations this year’s crop would be lower.
Where Canada in 2016-17 grew 8.8 million tonnes of barley, Statistics Canada on September 19 released its latest estimate for the 2017-18 crop, pegging it at just 7.3 million tonnes.
Feed barley prices are sitting around the C$200-C$205 per tonne mark, Pirness said, up slightly from last week when they was closer to C$195.
The same range holds true for feed wheat as well, he said.
“Feedlots aren’t bidding up for wheat and the way the winter wheat price has gone for export opportunities to the line companies, they’re not bidding up either.”
Feed buyers, however, will likely have options open to them soon, due to problems in the U.S.
“Given the lower quality of malt barley in North Dakota, Montana, some of that will find its way into the feed
