USA: Craft beer contribution to the US economy up more than 20% last year
|
Craft beer’s economic contribution to the United States economy has grown by more than 20% in two years, according to numbers released by the Brewers Association (BA) on September 26.
In announcing the results of its biennial economic impact study, the BA says small and independent American breweries added $67.8 billion to the economy in 2016, a 21.7% increase over 2014. This, despite growth of craft sales and production slowing dramatically over that same period.
“As consumers continue to demand a wide range of high quality, full-flavored beers, small and independent craft brewers are meeting this growing demand with innovative offerings, creating high levels of economic value in the process,” BA Chief Economist Bart Watson said in a statement.
The study covers the total impact of craft-brewed beer as it works its way through the three-tier distribution system, plus food and merchandise sold at brewpubs and brewery taprooms. This production and sales process created more than 456,000 full-time equivalent jobs – a 7.5% increase from 2014 - with breweries and brewpubs directly accounting for more than 128,000 of those jobs.

USA: Failing to turn around business next year could mean takeover attempt for Boston Beer - analyst
|
Boston Beer Co.’s comeback bid is anything but certain. And that could be good news for investors, Bloomberg reported on September 26.
If the company fails to turn around its business in the next year, it could mean a buyer comes knocking, an analyst suggested in a report on September 26. The remarks renewed takeover speculation for the maker of Sam Adams, helping send its shares up the most in almost two months.
The brewer has struggled to boost its performance as the craft beer industry gets more crowded. Drinkers now have more than 4,000 craft breweries to choose from, and the Boston-based company is losing market share. Boston Beer also is still searching for its next chief executive officer.
Those struggles could ultimately bring a windfall, Credit Suisse Group AG’s Laurent Grandet said in a note.
“Although founder Jim Koch seems determined to turn the business around, we think the likelihood of a takeout goes higher if Samuel Adams rejuvenation efforts ultimately fail next year,” he said.
The shares gained as much as 5.9 percent to $162 in New York trading, the biggest intraday gain since July 28. The stock had fallen 9.9 percent this year through Monday.

Greece: Craft brewing sector growing thanks to increasing consumer interest
|
Greeks have been displaying more of a preference for Greek beer lately and are starting to discover the exciting variety of ales produced by microbreweries, Kathimerini reported on September 23.
“There has been an increase in beers from Greek microbreweries due to higher demand from consumers. As a result, more Greek ales can be found on the market these days,” says Sofoklis Panagiotou, vice president of the Hellenic Association of Brewers. “There’s higher demand for flavors from Greece from foreign tourists while Greek consumers are always on the lookout for better beer made in the country and want to help small domestic producers,” he adds.
Currently, there are around 30 to 35 microbrewery companies employing anywhere from five to 15 people. According to the legal definition, a microbrewery is a brewery that produces less than 20 million litres of beer per year. “By Greek standards, that quite a large output. Only one Greek company that’s considered a microbrewery comes close to that level of production. The rest produce much less, anywhere from 300,000 to 1 million litres per year,” says Panagiotou.

Venezuela: Craft beer business booming despite economic crisis
|
With Venezuela’s economic crisis leaving consumers struggling to buy basic staple foods, small Caracas brewery Social Club might seem out of place selling craft beer that costs per bottle what a worker earning the minimum wage makes in two days.
But business is booming, Reuters reported on September 27.
Demand for Social Club’s beer regularly outstrips the 3,000 liters (793 gallons) it produces a month, according to its owners. Most of it is sold on weekends at a beer garden set up in the garage of its small production facility.
Brewers like Social Club are a reminder that despite the widespread social misery caused by the country’s economic crisis, an appetite remains among well-heeled Venezuelans for high-end niche products like craft beer.
At the same time, these small brewers are carving out a market in preparation for an eventual economic rebound.
“Venezuelans continue to be vain creatures who like to be in the vanguard, who like to keep up with what’s in fashion,” said Victor Querales, 32, one of Social Club’s owners, speaking on a Friday afternoon before clients began arriving. “There’s still a premium market that isn’t very sensitive to prices.”

Rwanda: Bralirwa to start brewing Heineken beer locally
|
Rwanda’s major brewer Braliwa - Brasserie et Limonaderie du Rwanda - is preparing to begin producing Heineken beer brand which is mostly imported, KT Press reported on September 25.
“Heineken beer to be produced in Rubavu-Rwanda very soon and exported to the region,” Jean Pierre Karabaranga, Rwandan Ambassador to Netherlands said on social media.
Braliwa is a subsidiary of the Netherlands based Heineken Group.
Karabaranga said the selection of Bralirwa to brew Heineken was motivated by excellent and attractive doing business climate in Rwanda. It is expected to spur exports and reducing the trade imbalance in the country.
The country’s largest brewing company, Bralirwa was founded in 1957 when it produced its flagship beer brand, Primus. The company later diversified its products by adding on its list Mutzig, Turbo, Amstel, Legend and soft beverages.
With the stiff competition of Skol brewing company, Bralirwa found itself in the discomfort zone where its revenues dropped by 82% and its profit before tax to Rwf 929million in the first half of 2016, down from Rwf 5.1 billion.
The company bounced back with an increase of 20.7% from Rwf 5.8 billion to Rwf 7.0 billion, in the first half of 2017 thanks to strict cost management.

UK: Kingfisher eyeing launch of an Indian pale ale in the UK
|
The European boss of Kingfisher beer is eyeing the launch of an Indian pale ale to complement the growing range of global brews it sells in a bid to appeal to a younger audience, The Telegraph reported on September 25.
Damon Swarbrick said the company’s big challenge had been the decline of popularity of curry - a dish its beer famously accompanies - as the millennial generation turned its back on the 1990s/early 2000s favourite in favour of other global cuisine, including Asian dishes from Vietnam.
The company has responded to this by signing deals to distribute drinks made by other companies such as Indonesian lager Bintang in the UK, as well as China’s Pearl River beer, brewed by Guangzhou Zhujiang Brewery. It will also begin distributing Sri Lanka’s biggest beer brand Lion here next month.
But Mr Swarbrick said his company was aiming to enter the craft market next year.
“Nobody should be able to do an Indian pale ale better than us,” he said. “We are getting our final strategy together and I would have thought by January next year we will have an IPA in the market to complement Kingfisher and our other brands.”

According to the USDA estimates, the global crop of barley will be below its global consumption for a second season in a row. This trend will lead to a substantial decrease in barley stocks in the world. Global barley inventories are expected to shrink to a 34-year low of 18.6 mln tonnes by the end of MY 2017/18.
This scenario’s feasibility is confirmed by sharply increased demand from key importers at the start of the 2017/18 season.
Thus, in view of tight global supply, the upward trend in barley market prices has been persisting for three months now and they have most likely not reached their ceiling yet. This market picture may result in higher barley margins against the previous season and a consequent increase in Ukrainian barley plantings for the 2018 harvest, UkrAgroConsult notes.
Planting of winter barley has just started in Ukraine, and the longer barley prices stay at such a high level, the more probable this course of events is, the analysts said.

USA: Hop stocks in the US increase as craft brewing industry growth slows down
|
Slowing growth in the craft brewing industry has contributed to a greater stockpile of hops in the US, including the Yakima Valley, the Yakima Herald-Republic reported on September 25.
As of Sept. 1, growers, suppliers and brewers had an estimated 98 million pounds of hops, an increase of 15 percent from the same period in 2016, according to figures released late last week from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service.
And the amount of hops stock kept by growers and suppliers increased — by 30 percent to 64 million pounds — while the amount of hops in stock by brewers decreased by 5 percent.
“A lot of (breweries) purchased hops based on 15 to 18 percent growth, which is what we experienced over the five years prior to last year,” said Steve Carpenter, chief operating officer of YCH Hops, a hop supplier that is owned by local hop growers. “Last year, we had 5 to 6 percent (craft brewery) growth.” Carpenter is referring to 2016 figures from the Brewers Association, a trade association for craft brewers, which the group defines as small (under 6 million barrels of beer or less) and independent brewers that sell beer made with traditional or
