USA: Boston Beer affirms it ‘has no plans to be part of larger beer company anytime soon’
|
Despite speculation that financial headwinds could cause the country’s largest craft brand to look to be acquired, Boston Beer Co. Inc. executives say the company is proud to be an independent craft brewer, the Boston Business Journal reported on September 28.
The stock price for Boston Beer rallied 4 percent on September 25 after one analyst speculated that Boston Beer could be acquired if financial problems persist.
Credit Suisse analyst Laurent Grandet said in a report that he was more bullish on Boston Beer than in the past, given the recent success of hard-seltzer brand Truly. But he also said there was still a lot of uncertainty, given how the company’s chief marketing officer, Jonathan Potter, would change the brand and when the search for a new CEO — already six months running — would conclude.
Though the company's second quarter had been positive, the long-term direction of the brand was up in the air, given increased competition from other craft brewers.
“We remain cautious on the trajectory of the business in 2018 and beyond. Samuel Adams brand is declining in both retail and on-premise and we don't think this could improve before mid-2018,” Grandet said.
If a financial turnaround doesn't occur within the next

Canada, AB: Sawback Brewing plans to open its doors in the spring of 2018
|
A new brewery has announced plans to open in Red Deer, Alberta next year, Canadian Beer News reported on September 25.
Sawback Brewing takes its name from the Sawback Mountain Range which is the source of the Red Deer River, the main water supply for the city of Red Deer.
“We will have a 10bbl brewhouse matched up with multiple serving tanks,” says Sawback co-owner Nathan Prestie. “We will also have a pilot system to aggressively develop our seasonal and cask style ales. Beer styles will range from light golden Pilsner, to Dark Stouts, although Pale Ale, Session Ale, and IPA will be the brewery’s main focus. There are plans to expand a sour program as well.”
Prestie also notes that the distribution and sales will primarily be done via an on-site taproom and retail store featuring a growler station, but will expand as demand increases.
Sawback Brewing is expected to open in the spring of 2018.

USA, MI: Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery planning production-scale facility in Grand Rapids
|
A West Michigan craft brewery wants to open a satellite taproom and production-scale facility at the former MC Sports store on Plainfield Avenue in Grand Rapids, MiBiz reported on September 28.
Ada-based Gravel Bottom Craft Brewery & Supply will go before the Grand Rapids Planning Commission on Oct. 12 with plans to breathe new life into the shuttered 18,000-square-foot former retail store. The brewery is proposing a 15-barrel system, canning line, homebrewing equipment supply shop, as well as a taproom and restaurant.
MC Sports closed all its retail stores earlier this year after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and completing a liquidation sale.
According to Gravel Bottom owner Matt Michiels, the satellite location would afford the growing brewery room to grow as it looks to get its beer into distribution to help with marketing the company’s offerings.
“What I’m looking at right now is really a phase one,” Michiels said. “It’s a space that could support 10,000 barrels of production, but there’s no way I’m going to do that anytime soon. If I get to 1,500 to 2,000 barrels in the next couple of years, I’d consider that a huge success.”
Although Gravel Bottom is still in its due diligence phase for its purchase agreement

USA, NC: Lucky City Brewing Cooperative could benefit from a $275,000 grant
|
A $275,000 grant may give the Lucky City Brewing Cooperative a big hand in readying its building for business, Greensboro News & Record reported on September 27.
On Sept. 12, the Reidsville City Council authorized the city to submit a formal application to the North Carolina Department of Commerce for a Community Development Block Grant to benefit the proposed microbrewery.
“This grant will essentially catapult us to opening,” said Eric Smith, cooperative president.
Economic Development Director Jeff Garstka expects the state to make a decision around November.
The funds would go towards renovating the bottom floor of 228 Gilmer St., Reidsville, the future site of Lucky City Brewing.
The grant would not support renovations on the second or third floor, the future sites of the Rockingham County Arts Council and the Theatre Guild of Rockingham County.
If the funds are granted, Lucky City would be able to begin construction and receive reimbursements for renovation costs.
The grant would not cover the cost of furniture, fixtures or equipment.
Lucky City cannot do any renovations to the building until after officials approve or deny the grant.
The $275,000 would cover about half of what the brewery needs, according to Garstka.
The grant also requires a 25 percent local match to

USA, HI: New bill intends to slash beer taxes by more than half
|
Hawaii residents may be more incentivized to patron the many new breweries opening in Honolulu if a bill to cut beer taxes passes during the next legislative session, the Pacific Business News reported on September 26.
Hawaii Rep. Kaniela Ing will introduce the bill, which would slash taxes that Hawaii residents pay for beer by more than half, from 93 cents per gallon to 42 cents per gallon.
In a statement on September 25, Ing said the goal of the bill is not to encourage drinking, but to level out the taxes between beer and wine or spirits.
“While it may appear that beer is taxed at a lower rate per gallon when compared to wine or spirits, if you break down the amount of alcohol per average gallon of beer versus wine or spirits, beer drinkers are taxed at a much higher rate,” Ing said in a statement, adding that the proposal is a matter of class fairness.
“Working people tend to drink beer more often than other types of alcoholic beverages. But today they are taxed more per ounce of alcohol than someone drinking wine,” Ing said. When you look at it that way, the current system is incredibly unjust.”
Ing believes this

Romania: Beer market up more than 2% in January-July this year
|
The Romanian Beer Association reported a growth by over 2 percent in volume of the beer market in the first seven months of the year, compared with the same period of 2016, the Business Review reported on September 27.
“The beer evolution during January-July was a positive one, but moderate,” said Julia Leferman, general director of the Romanian Beer Association.
The beer sector has an important role in the development of the Romanian economy, with locally produced beer accounting for more than 97 percent of the total volume of beer consumed in the country, and the usage of ingredients from the local agriculture accounting for 70 percent.
Leferman added: “To buy a litre of beer, a Romanian has to work 22 minutes, while a German needs to work only 8 minutes and a Dutch 9 minutes. The intervention of an unpredictable economic factor can increase this gap anytime, with negative consequences on the entire chain connected to the beer production: agriculture, HoReCa, retail, transports, packaging industry.”
The beer sector creates 85,000 direct and indirect jobs in Romania, it is reported.

The Czech Republic: Brewers seeking to reclaim pub drinkers
|
Czech beer has an international worldwide reputation but there are worries that on the home market at least it could be losing its appeal, especially in local pubs and among its most fervent fans. That’s one of the reasons for nationwide action being staged by brewers, pubs, and restaurants, Radio Prague reported on September 27.
A five day celebration of Czech beer – hopefully without too much of a hangover – was launched across the country on September 27 with dozens of breweries and hundreds of pubs and restaurants taking part. It’s framed around St. Wenceslas’ day – the patron of Czech beer and malt as well as the patron saint of the nation – which is marked on the following day.
But the Czech beer industry currently has its worries and could do with help from the saintly patron. For all their success in conquering foreign markets, big brewers and small are concerned that they might be becoming increasingly disconnected from their domestic drinkers, especially those in traditional pubs.
The latest figures suggest that only around four out of 10 beers are now consumed in Czech pubs with the increasing trend now for beer to be bought in shops and
