Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria's 39.70 billion naira share sale oversubscribed
|
Guinness Nigeria's 39.70 billion naira ($126 mln) share sale to existing shareholders was 116 percent subscribed, the company said on October 4.
The brewer, the local unit of the world's leading spirit maker Diageo, said in a statement it sold five new shares from the company to shareholders for every 11 held, at 58 naira each.
The company, which is 54 percent owned by Diageo, said two shareholders applied for 50 million shares and above during the rights issue.
Diageo has said it was willing to take up its rights in the share issue to maintain its shareholding.
The company had been seeking to raise funds to strengthen its balance sheet after it posted its first annual loss in 30 years in the 12 months to June 2016.
Guinness Nigeria shares traded flat on October 4 at 98.55 naira on the Lagos bourse, up about 18 percent so far this year.

Japan: Asahi Breweries raising beer prices for the first time since 2008
|
Asahi Breweries Ltd. will raise the price of beer delivered mainly to bars and restaurants by about 10 percent in March 2018, the company’s first price hike since 2008, Asahi Shimbun reported on October 4.
The increase will apply to bottles and barrels of the flagship Asahi Super Dry and other labels sold to wholesalers. The price for beer in cans will remain unchanged.
Changes to the liquor tax law that took effect on June 1 more strictly control sales of beer and other alcoholic beverages at prices below the cost involved in retailing them, unless there is a good reason for doing so.
Asahi decided to raise the price of beer because of higher distribution costs caused by a labor shortage, company officials said.
According to the officials, the commercial beer market has been struggling in recent years because of the shrinking population and younger Japanese shifting to other alcoholic beverages.
In 2016, sales of bottled beer decreased by about 40 percent over the figure in 2008. Sales of beer barrels to commercial establishments also declined by 8 percent over the same period.

Hong Kong: Gweilo Beer to open Hong Kong’s largest craft brewery next summer
|
Hong Kong’s Gweilo Beer, which was set up two and a half years ago in a spare bedroom, will open a new US$5 million craft beer brewery – Hong Kong’s largest – next summer to cater to rising demand for the company’s brews. The brewery, a hi-tech 14,000 sq ft facility in Fo Tan, is currently under construction, The South China Morning Post reported on October 3.
Gweilo, founded by Ian and Emily Jebbitt, and their friend Joe Gould, currently contracts out production of its three beers to another Hong Kong brewery.
“We’ve now outgrown where we make our beer,” says Ian Jebbitt, an intellectual property lawyer, who began brewing beer at home with his father at the age of seven in Oxfordshire in the UK.
“Demand for Gweilo beer is seriously high and for the past year we’ve been at maximum capacity and can’t make any extra beer. We’ve always dreamed of having our own brewery and now we’re in a position to do that,” he says.
A casual chat with a friend and fellow home brewer from Mui Wo on Lantau Island, who works for his family’s construction company, BCI Engineering, led to the latest development, which will enable the company to

Ukraine: Barley inventories down 19.6% as of September 1
|
According to the State Statistics Service, 23.35 mln tonnes of cereals and pulses were available in Ukraine as of September 1, 2017, or 4.5% less than at the same time last year (24.44 mln tonnes), UkrAgroConsult reported on October 4.
As of the reporting date, wheat stocks were down 5.2% year-on-year at 16.78 mln tonnes against 17.7 mln tonnes as of September 1, 2016. Barley inventories fell by 19.6% against last year, to 3.26 mln tonnes (4.06 mln tonnes in September 2016).
The decrease in grain inventories results both from some yield decline this year and quite active exports in the first months of the season, reports UkrAgroConsult.
At the same time, grower and miller stocks of corn are up 20.4% year-on-year at 1.61 mln tonnes against 1.34 mln tonnes as of September 1, 2016.
