Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands Q2 profit beats Wall Street estimates
Constellation Brands posted a quarterly profit that beat Wall Street estimates for a ninth straight time and raised its profit outlook, as margins rose on the sale of more premium beers and breweries ran at peak levels in the summer, CNBC reported on October 5.

To take advantage of consumer tastes shifting to more unique beer flavors, Constellation has been building its premium beer business with acquisitions of independent craft brewers, such as Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits in 2015 and Florida-based Funky Buddha this past August.

Its premium Corona and Modelo beers are also seeing increased demand due to a rising Hispanic population in the United States, analysts have said.

On October 5, the company said beer sales rose 12.8 percent in the second quarter on strong demand for premium beers between the fourth of July and Labor Day. Operating margins in its beer business rose 4.2 percentage points to 41.1 percent.

Constellation holds the license to distribute Corona and Modelo beers in the U.S. and brews most of its beers in Mexico.

The company, which also makes Robert Mondavi wines and SVEDKA vodka, lifted its full-year profit forecast to $8.25 to $8.40 per share, from a previous range of $7.90 to $8.10.

Brewery news Thailand: ThaiBev’s nine-months sales down 6% year-on-year because of slow economic growth
Thai Beverage's (ThaiBev) sales in the first nine months of its fiscal year, from October 2016 to June 2017, dropped 6 per cent year on year to 142 billion baht (S$5.8 billion) because of slow economic growth, CEO Thapana Sirivadhanabhakdi told reporters on October 5.

Sales have also been pressured by Thailand's observance of a year-long mourning period after the death of King Bhumibol in October last year. The beer market has declined by 8 per cent, one executive said at the news conference, as festivities have been curbed, The Business Times reported.

ThaiBev, controlled by Mr Thapana's billionaire father Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, expects an upturn after the mourning ends this month and plans to launch two new spirit products in November.

The company was optimistic about the Thai economy next year, thanks to strong fundamentals and growth from neighbouring Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, Mr Thapana said.

The Singapore-listed company was also hit by a new alcohol excise tax and a sugar tax on its sweetened drinks, which Mr Thapana said has had a "short-term impact" on business.

It has increased prices of spirits, which account for more than half its revenue, by about 2 per cent across the category, said CEO of Spirits Prapakon ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Constellation Brands to debut new Corona Premier beer in February
The Corona family is growing.

Riding a surge of interest in Mexican beer, Constellation Brands will debut Corona Premier nationwide in February. It will also release Corona Familiar in all major Hispanic markets, a key demographic for the brand, CNBC reported on October 5.

Constellation conducted a "successful" test of Premier before deciding to make it available nationwide. The company said the brew is aimed at a mature, sophisticated consumer looking to trade up from light beer.

Premier contains 90 calories. In comparison, Extra contains 149 calories and Light contains 99.

"Corona Premier capitalizes on industry and consumer trends including declines of domestic light beers, growth of high end and interest in new light beers that are premium and have badge value," a spokeswoman said in an email.

Corona and Modelo's popularity has helped Constellation's sales surge. In the second quarter, which includes the all-important summer months, Constellation's beer sales grew nearly 13 percent from the same time last year.

The company beat Wall Street's profit expectations for the ninth straight quarter, thanks to higher margins. On October 5, it also boosted its full-year earnings forecast to between $8.25 and $8.40 per share from $7.90 and $8.10 per share.

Constellation's stock has skyrocketed about 36 percent this ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Tight barley supplies expected to encourage corn imports
Feed barley prices have been under pressure through the harvest period as yields across Western Canada have come in better than expected. It appears that the drier conditions in the southern regions of Alberta and Saskatchewan were more than offset by timely rains in the central and northern areas of the provinces, the Canadian Cattlemen reported on October 6.

Barley selected for malt production is also much higher than earlier projections, it is reported.

Feedlots in the Lethbridge area were buying feed barley in the range of C$190/mt (metric tonnes) to C$195/mt in early September while Red Deer operations were showing bids from C$180/mt to C$185/mt delivered.

Statistics Canada estimated the 2017 barley crop at 7.2 million mt, down from the 2016 production of 8.8 million mt. The average yield was pegged at 63.2 bushels per acre, down 10 bushels per acre from last year but up three bushels per acre from the 10-year average. The crop quality also came in better than anticipated. The favourable conditions in central and northern Alberta and Saskatchewan more than offset the drier regions in the south. It appears that malt barley production will be about 2.5 million mt to 3.0 million mt. This ...More info on site

Barley news Saudi Arabia: Saudi Arabia to reduce barley import to 8 mln tonnes - state grain buying agency
Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s largest importers of barley, expects to reduce imports of the grain to 8 million tonnes this marketing season from 9.1 million tonnes in the previous season, the head of the country’s main state grain buying agency was quoted as saying by Hellenic Shipping News Worldwide on October 4.

The decline is due to Saudi Arabia’s efforts to partially substitute domestic consumption of barley with maize (corn) and soybeans, said Ahmad al-Fares, governor of the Saudi Grains Organisation (SAGO).

Feed barley prices have risen in recent weeks due to falling international supply, and the market could become tighter as major exporters Russia and Ukraine are expected to prioritise wheat and maize exports, respectively, over barley.

The usual price discount for barley against milling wheat has been eroded, with a barley purchase by Tunisia on October 3 showing prices close to those paid for wheat by Egypt in a separate tender on the same day.

SAGO’s governor added that he expected global barley prices to fall from current levels towards the end of this year or early next year due as additional supply comes to the market.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture forecasts that world barley stocks will fall to 18.6 ...More info on site

Barley news Angola: French group Castel invests US$50 mln in grain production in Angola to reduce dependence on imports
French group Castel, the owner of Nocal brand and beer factory, has invested US$50 million in grain production on a 3000-hectare plot in Angola’s Malanje province to reduce dependence on imported raw materials, Macauhub reported on October 6 citing the managing director of Nova Empresa de Cerveja de Angola (Nocal).

Gilles Leclerc told Angolan news agency Angop that grain planting had started at the beginning of the year on about 80% of the 3,000 hectares and recalled that imports of raw materials is a difficulty throughout the country’s beverage industry.

In the case of Nocal, the factory, with monthly production of about 10 million litres of beer, depends on imports of malt and hops, as well as the parts needed to maintain the production and filling lines.

The managing director said that it is possible to obtain almost all the raw materials for the beer trade in Angola, as the group locally produces glass, cans, labels, cases and bottle tops and purchases rice and sugar. Grains is the product that needs to be imported.

Leclerc also said that, despite the difficulties, he plans to increase production by the beginning of the first quarter of 2018, from 10 million to 11 million litres.

Nocal’s shareholders are ...More info on site
