LATER HARVEST - MORE GRAPEFRUIT
ABSTRACT
This is one of the outcomes of this Japanese research
team looking into the influence of harvest date of hops.
Specifically they looked into the varieties Cascade, Furano
Beauty and Furano Magical; the latter two are Japanese
bred varieties from Sapporo. Harvesting these varieties in a
time window from 45 to 85 days after flowering, they found
that the alpha content is realtively stable as is the content
of 4MMP (black currant to catty), but the level of 3M4MP
(3-mercapto-4 methylpentan-1-ol) that gives a grapefruit
flavour rises significantly with a later harvest date. Also,
the oil content in general increases with a later harvest. For
Furano Beauty, later harvest leads to a more fruity, citrus and
floral aroma in the trial beer where, as in Furano Magical, the
flavour was just a different balance of sensory perceptions.
If this can be confirmed for other varieties, we have a good
indication how to increase grapefruit flavours in beer!

UK: Brewing and pub industry suffering from “a lot of uncertainty” over Brexit
|
The brewing and pub industry is suffering from “a lot of uncertainty” over the issue of Brexit, according to one of the UK’s leading breweries, The Morning Advertiser reported on October 11.
Speaking to The Morning Advertiser, Purity Brewing co-founder Paul Halsey said that the fall in the value of the pound had increased raw ingredients costs, and accused the Government of not providing “enough clear messages” about what would happen when Britain leaves the EU.
“We use a lot of American and Slovenian hops and, obviously, Brexit has impacted on the exchange rate; it has just bombed,” he said. “All our malt is English and a lot of our bittering hops are local to Worcestershire and Herefordshire but a lot our aroma hops are coming from north-west America or from Eastern Europe, and Brexit has caused some issues for us there.
“What’s the next effect? There is a lot of uncertainty – people do not know what is happening. There are not enough clear messages from The Government and I don't think there is a lot of consumer confidence at the moment.”
When asked whether or not this would result on a higher price for consumers at the bar, Halsey admitted to being

Canada: Canada’s independent breweries concentrating on winning customers through new and innovative beer styles
|
Canada's remaining independent breweries know they can't compete with the economies of scale and marketing capabilities of global conglomerates, so they're concentrating on winning customers over by catering to craft beer lovers' unquenchable thirst for new and innovative styles, The Globe and Mail reported on October 3.
That's what Calgary-based Big Rock Brewery's newly appointed CEO Wayne Arsenault is banking on as the company celebrates the one-year anniversary of its brewing facility in Ontario, home to 40 per cent of the country's brewery industry.
The 27-year-old company, he says, is taking a grassroots approach of "finding and introducing customers to Big Rock one taste palette at a time" as it expands into different markets across the country.
"We really have to compete on the authenticity of what we do. It's really a case of David and Goliath and I think people like that challenge," says Arsenault, who has previously held executive and management roles at Moosehead Breweries and Molson Coors.
"For us it's about innovation and bringing great beers in the market place."
Arsenault says Canadian-owned players like Big Rock can simply never match the reach and cheaper retail prices of international brewing companies like Molson Coors and Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV — which are expected

Australia: Lion and Heineken sign simplified licence agreement for Heineken, Birra Moretti brands
|
Lion and Heineken have signed a new Trade Mark Licensing Agreement for the world’s most valuable global premium beer brand, Heineken, The Shout reported on October 11.
The new, long-term arrangement is a simplified licence agreement for Heineken and includes a new distribution agreement for Birra Moretti.
Previously the brands were managed by a Joint Venture (Heineken Lion Australia) between the two companies, which will be dissolved as part of the transaction; according to Lion, the dissolution of the JV “will occur over an orderly period, with operations wrapped up in due course.”
The agreement extends the already strong relationship between the two companies in Australia, which began in 2004.
“The international premium segment is an important growth opportunity in Australia,” said James Brindley, Managing Director Lion Beer Australia.
“This new deal will accelerate the growth of Heineken by integrating the brand more fully into Lion’s operations. Importantly, this change will not impact our customers or consumers.”
Kenneth Choo, Managing Director Asia Pacific at Heineken, said: “We have been working with Lion since 2004 to sell and market Heineken in Australia.
“We are pleased that we have reached an agreement with Lion to continue as our partner in Australia and look forward to working with them to

Japan: Japanese brewers targeting female consumers
|
Faced with a shrinking beer market at home, Japanese brewers are shoring up sales by targeting women with a range of fizzy, fruity canned cocktails, but the strategy hasn’t been without some hiccups along the way, Reuters reported on October 3.
Traditional disapproval of women drinking in public has faded due to social change, with more women in the work force, earning money to spend any way they want.
But attitudes have changed in other ways too, and brewers had to learn old marketing strategies that relied on gender stereotyping weren’t going to persuade modern Japanese women to buy their drinks.
“I don’t need the patronizing ‘kawaii’ (cute) in my drinks to tell me that it’s appealing to me,” said Yukari Hakoiwa, a 26-year-old in the clothing industry. “I would much rather judge based on flavors.”
To tap the female market, brewers have focused on canned cocktails and other mixed drinks such as “chuhai” -- a word that combines “highball” and “shochu,” an alcohol made from rice, barley or sweet potatoes.
Surveys show Japanese women prefer these to beer.
But first the companies had to get women to overcome their reluctance to buy canned alcoholic drinks, which many women here associated with middle-aged men.

Ukraine: Ukraine’s barley exports decline during the first two months of the season 2017/18
|
Barley exports from Ukraine dropped by 10.5% over the first two months of the 2017/18 marketing season, while exports of Ukrainian barely to China are already 87% more than the volume shipped to China during the whole last marketing season, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Ukraine’s barley exports totaled 1.973 mln tonnes in July - August of the 2017/2018 marketing season, which is 10.5% less compared with the same period in the 2016/2017 marketing season.
At the same time, Ukrainian barley was actively purchased by China. In the reporting period, Ukraine supplied 560 thousand tonnes of barley to the Chinese market, which is already 87% more than for the whole last marketing season (300 thousand tonnes).
Ukraine also increased barley exports to the European Union countries - more than 220 thousand tonnes, or 18% more compared with the same period last marketing season.
Traditionally, the main market for Ukrainian barley is Saudi Arabia, which purchased over 680 thousand tonnes of barley, or 35% of total supplies, during the reporting period.

Russia: Barley and wheat export prices rise amid strong demand from buyers
|
Russian wheat and barley export prices rose last week amid strong demand from buyers including Egypt and Saudi Arabia, analysts said on October 9.
Black Sea prices for Russian wheat with 12.5 percent protein content and October delivery were at $193 a tonne on a free-on-board (FOB) basis at the end of last week, up $2 from a week earlier, agriculture consultancy IKAR said.
Egypt, the world's top wheat importer and the largest buyer of Russian wheat, agreed to purchase 180,000 tonnes of Russian wheat in a state tender on Oct. 3.
SovEcon, another Moscow-based consultancy, said barley prices climbed $2.5 to $189.5 per tonne. Saudi Arabia, one of the world's largest barley importers, bought 540,000 tonnes of feed barley in a state tender on Oct. 2.
As of Oct. 4, Russia had exported 12.5 million tonnes of grain since the start of the 2017/18 marketing season on July 1, up 20 percent from a year earlier. Wheat exports were up 12 percent at 9.6 million tonnes.
As of Oct. 5, Russian farmers had harvested 127.6 million tonnes of grain, before drying and cleaning, from 90 percent of the total area.
Farmers have also sown winter grains for next year's crop on 83 percent of the

UK: Diageo to revive Port Ellen and Brora distilleries in Scotland
|
Diageo is to revive ‘lost’ distilleries Port Ellen and Brora with a £35 million investment, The Drinks Business reported on October 9.
The funds will ensure that both distilleries, which have been closed since 1983, will be brought back into production by 2020, subject to planning permission and regulatory consents.
For many years, whisky fans around the world have called on Diageo to reopen these closed distilleries.
The decision is partly a response to those demands from existing enthusiasts but it also reflects the strong growth in the single malt Scotch market and the opportunity to create new generations of whisky consumers, according to Diageo.
Dr Nick Morgan, Diageo’s head of whisky outreach, who played an instrumental role in building the reputation of Port Ellen and Brora whiskies through the Diageo Special Releases programme, which has been running since 2001, announced the plans on behalf of the company.
He said: “This is a truly exceptional moment in Scotch whisky. Port Ellen and Brora are names which have a uniquely powerful resonance with whisky-lovers around the world and the opportunity to bring these lost distilleries back to life is as rare and special as the spirit for which the distilleries are famous.
