LATER HARVEST - MORE GRAPEFRUIT
ABSTRACT
This is one of the outcomes of this Japanese research
team looking into the influence of harvest date of hops.
Specifically they looked into the varieties Cascade, Furano
Beauty and Furano Magical; the latter two are Japanese
bred varieties from Sapporo. Harvesting these varieties in a
time window from 45 to 85 days after flowering, they found
that the alpha content is realtively stable as is the content
of 4MMP (black currant to catty), but the level of 3M4MP
(3-mercapto-4 methylpentan-1-ol) that gives a grapefruit
flavour rises significantly with a later harvest date. Also,
the oil content in general increases with a later harvest. For
Furano Beauty, later harvest leads to a more fruity, citrus and
floral aroma in the trial beer where, as in Furano Magical, the
flavour was just a different balance of sensory perceptions.
If this can be confirmed for other varieties, we have a good
indication how to increase grapefruit flavours in beer!

Canada: Canada’s independent breweries concentrating on winning customers through new and innovative beer styles
|
Canada's remaining independent breweries know they can't compete with the economies of scale and marketing capabilities of global conglomerates, so they're concentrating on winning customers over by catering to craft beer lovers' unquenchable thirst for new and innovative styles, The Globe and Mail reported on October 3.
That's what Calgary-based Big Rock Brewery's newly appointed CEO Wayne Arsenault is banking on as the company celebrates the one-year anniversary of its brewing facility in Ontario, home to 40 per cent of the country's brewery industry.
The 27-year-old company, he says, is taking a grassroots approach of "finding and introducing customers to Big Rock one taste palette at a time" as it expands into different markets across the country.
"We really have to compete on the authenticity of what we do. It's really a case of David and Goliath and I think people like that challenge," says Arsenault, who has previously held executive and management roles at Moosehead Breweries and Molson Coors.
"For us it's about innovation and bringing great beers in the market place."
Arsenault says Canadian-owned players like Big Rock can simply never match the reach and cheaper retail prices of international brewing companies like Molson Coors and Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV — which are expected

USA, CO: Oasis Brewing rising once again in Colorado
|
Like a phoenix from the ashes, Boulder’s once-beloved Oasis Brewing is rising once again in Colorado, The Denver Post reported on October 10.
Oasis brewed its Egyptian-themed beers — Scarab Red, Tut Brown Ale and Zoser Stout being the most notable — in Boulder for the better part of the ’90s. Those three brews, plus some new concoctions, will make their on-tap return next month when Oasis reopens in Denver.
Founded in 1991, it was one of the early purveyors of craft beer. Despite its Egyptian decor and naming scheme, the brewery churned out English-style beers. The brewery won several awards from the Great American Beer Fest back in the day.
They expanded, but it was too much, too fast, founder George Hanna said, and “probably” the reason the brewery closed in the early ’00s, just as the craft beer industry began to slow.
But the legacy of Oasis never quite faded from the minds of Hanna’s son, Jesse, who still lives in Boulder. Jesse and his brother-in-law Hawk Vanek, of Lafayette, asked Hanna to restart the brewery.
Oasis will reopen in an 86-year-old church in Denver’s Highland Square, as Westword reported earlier this year. Six beers will be on tap to start, a number

USA, NC: Ghost Harbor Brewing aiming at opening in Elizabeth City by the end of the year
|
Seventy-one microbreweries have opened across North Carolina so far this year, and if things keep going as planned a 72nd will open in Elizabeth City by the end of the year, The Daily Advance reported on October 8.
At least that’s Thomas Reese’s plan.
Reese, who co-owns Ghost Harbor Brewing with his wife, Tabitha, provided an update on the couple’s microbrewery project to the Elizabeth City Area Committee of 100 last week.
Ghost Harbor Brewing is taking shape inside a building at 606-B East Colonial Avenue owned by George Jackson, just behind Hoppin’ John’s restaurant. The microbrewery will include both an area for crafting beer and a tasting room. Customers will be served beer both inside Ghost Harbor and outside at tables in Pailin’s Alley, which connects the site with both East Colonial and Elizabeth Street.
Reese told Committee of 100 members that equipment delays have set back the microbrewery’s completion date. However, his plan is to still have beer produced by Ghost Harbor Brewing available in time for the fourth annual River Rhythm and Brews — a local beer festival — on Oct. 21.
Reese, who moved with Tabitha and their three children to Elizabeth City from Virginia Beach, Virginia, in 2007, said he’s

USA, MT: Gally’s Brewing coming to Harlowton in December
|
A Harlowton family with deep roots is opening the town’s first modern brewery in December, KTVQ Billings News reported on October 10.
Drew Galahan and his sister, Shanda Speed, are renovating the old Montana Bar building to open Gally’s Brewing at 30 Central Ave. S. in Harlowton, which is about 92 miles northwest of Billings in Wheatland County.
Galahan, 26, previously worked as a financial analyst in Great Falls and Billings and has been planning this new venture for the past 18 months. He said he started brewing beer about six years ago and plans to rotate 10 taps.
Galahan is an IPA fan, but the brewery will have stouts, blondes and other style to appeal to a variety of palates, he said.
Galahan is aiming to open in the first or second week of December.
The other co-owners are Galahan’s fiance, Melanie Bock, and his brother-in-law, Matthew Speed. Galahan estimated they’re investing between $300,000 and $350,000 into starting the business, which includes major renovations to the 104-year-old building.
The family is the third generation in Harlowton, and their grandparents previously owned the Gally’s hardware store in town.
“Part of this whole theme was trying to bring something back to Harlowton, bring back something to the

USA, TX: Austin’s Flying Man Brewing now opening for tastings four days per week
|
Flying Man Brewing co-founder Matt Barker says that after a successful run last weekend, the brewery is now opening for tastings four days per week. Barker and co-founder Adam Caudill purchased the former site of Rogness Brewing in August of 2016, and have been working to update and redesign the space over the past year. An indieagogo campaign held earlier this year raised funds toward taproom completion, Eater Austin reported on October 9.
The debut beer lineup (rolled out as ready) includes a blonde ale, a chipotle stout, a watermelon wheat, a saison, and a porter. In addition to the brewery’s standard 30 barrel brewhouse, a smaller pilot system will produce limited releases for the taproom.
Initial hours are Thursday 3:30pm-9pm, Friday 3:30pm-10pm, Saturday Noon-10pm, and Sunday Noon-7pm. Flying Man currently has six beers on tap, several of which have limited quantities available. There isn’t an onsite kitchen, but guest food trucks are on tap for later this fall. The taproom is described as kid and dog-friendly, and growler fills are available.

USA, KY: Alexandria Brewing Company finds location for its craft brewery in Alexandria
|
After more than a year of searching, the owner of Alexandria Brewing Company has found a location for his craft brewery in Campbell County, WCPO reported on October 9.
In a blog post, Andy Reynolds announced he is leasing a large space at 7926 Alexandria Pike in Alexandria. In July 2016, Reynolds said he hoped to have his brewery up and running by the end of 2017.
Reynolds explained issues with an initial property he hoped to purchase caused the delay in Alexandria Brewing Co.'s opening.
"To explain things to you in a nutshell, we were looking at a large piece of property on Alexandria Pike (US 27) for over a year," Reynolds wrote. "On our final trip out there with two of our investors, we noticed ornamental grass had been cut down revealing a septic tank . . . So, we got quotes on tapping into sewer and quotes on a commercial grade septic system. At the end of the day, that property would not work. Our entire remodeling budget would have been spent on one of these two options."
Reynolds stated the septic tank was not disclosed in the real estate sales information. He said he now hopes to open his brewery

USA, CO: Green Earth Brewing Co. hoping to launch in November or December this year
|
Scott Pell's love for brewing beer sparked more than 20 years ago when his wife, Patty, bought him a home brewing kit.
He tried it out, mixed the ingredients accordingly and followed the instructions step by step. After he made his first batch, his initial reaction was, honestly, shock.
"I thought, 'Oh my god, this is actually drinkable,'" Pell said with a laugh.
Now Pell creates his own original recipes for the ales he makes, and he'll open his first brewery, Green Earth Brewing Co., in downtown Greeley sometime later this year. November or December is the part-time school counselor's wishful goal for the location to open in the square, brick building at 725 10th St., next to Zoe's Café and Events. Pell and his business partner and brother-in-law, Doug Hansen, signed their lease in March, the Greeley Tribune reported on October 7.
Pell, a longtime Greeley resident, said there will be about four or five brews on tap when he first opens, including a selection of brown, black, white and red ales, plus an IPA. That number eventually will reach eight taps as he starts experimenting with what customers want and like, he said.
His first successful brew, which will be Green Earth's signature

USA, CA: Attitude Brewing Company preparing to launch in San Diego’s Mercado del Barrio
|
Mercado del Barrio, the long-dreamed town center for Barrio Logan, is coming into its own.
Five years after the $80 million, three-building project opened at National Avenue and Cesar Chavez Parkway in San Diego, the mixed-use development of subsidized apartments and retail shops is 96 percent leased, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported on October 8.
“The location of it was great,” said Peter Park, vice president and asset manager for Shea Properties, which is responsible for the nonresidential portion of the project. “It just took time to mature and evolve.”
The biggest new tenant and the largest in the main building is Attitude Brewing Company, a new microbrewery concept that will occupy nearly 5,000 square feet at the northwest corner of the site.
It’s the dream of Kurt Bach, 50, who arrived in San Diego from Portland, Ore., in April. His heritage may be Irish-German, but he spent years doing business in Mexico. (His wife is from Mexico and he speaks fluent Spanish.)
“I like Mexico, I like the culture of Mexico, but it’s difficult to do business in Mexico — there’s a lot of red tape and ‘weirdness,’ now a lot of insecurity, so I’m back in the U.S.”
He also worked in Oregon breweries

UK: Brewing and pub industry suffering from “a lot of uncertainty” over Brexit
|
The brewing and pub industry is suffering from “a lot of uncertainty” over the issue of Brexit, according to one of the UK’s leading breweries, The Morning Advertiser reported on October 11.
Speaking to The Morning Advertiser, Purity Brewing co-founder Paul Halsey said that the fall in the value of the pound had increased raw ingredients costs, and accused the Government of not providing “enough clear messages” about what would happen when Britain leaves the EU.
“We use a lot of American and Slovenian hops and, obviously, Brexit has impacted on the exchange rate; it has just bombed,” he said. “All our malt is English and a lot of our bittering hops are local to Worcestershire and Herefordshire but a lot our aroma hops are coming from north-west America or from Eastern Europe, and Brexit has caused some issues for us there.
“What’s the next effect? There is a lot of uncertainty – people do not know what is happening. There are not enough clear messages from The Government and I don't think there is a lot of consumer confidence at the moment.”
When asked whether or not this would result on a higher price for consumers at the bar, Halsey admitted to being

UK: Diageo to revive Port Ellen and Brora distilleries in Scotland
|
Diageo is to revive ‘lost’ distilleries Port Ellen and Brora with a £35 million investment, The Drinks Business reported on October 9.
The funds will ensure that both distilleries, which have been closed since 1983, will be brought back into production by 2020, subject to planning permission and regulatory consents.
For many years, whisky fans around the world have called on Diageo to reopen these closed distilleries.
The decision is partly a response to those demands from existing enthusiasts but it also reflects the strong growth in the single malt Scotch market and the opportunity to create new generations of whisky consumers, according to Diageo.
Dr Nick Morgan, Diageo’s head of whisky outreach, who played an instrumental role in building the reputation of Port Ellen and Brora whiskies through the Diageo Special Releases programme, which has been running since 2001, announced the plans on behalf of the company.
He said: “This is a truly exceptional moment in Scotch whisky. Port Ellen and Brora are names which have a uniquely powerful resonance with whisky-lovers around the world and the opportunity to bring these lost distilleries back to life is as rare and special as the spirit for which the distilleries are famous.

Australia: Lion and Heineken sign simplified licence agreement for Heineken, Birra Moretti brands
|
Lion and Heineken have signed a new Trade Mark Licensing Agreement for the world’s most valuable global premium beer brand, Heineken, The Shout reported on October 11.
The new, long-term arrangement is a simplified licence agreement for Heineken and includes a new distribution agreement for Birra Moretti.
Previously the brands were managed by a Joint Venture (Heineken Lion Australia) between the two companies, which will be dissolved as part of the transaction; according to Lion, the dissolution of the JV “will occur over an orderly period, with operations wrapped up in due course.”
The agreement extends the already strong relationship between the two companies in Australia, which began in 2004.
“The international premium segment is an important growth opportunity in Australia,” said James Brindley, Managing Director Lion Beer Australia.
“This new deal will accelerate the growth of Heineken by integrating the brand more fully into Lion’s operations. Importantly, this change will not impact our customers or consumers.”
Kenneth Choo, Managing Director Asia Pacific at Heineken, said: “We have been working with Lion since 2004 to sell and market Heineken in Australia.
“We are pleased that we have reached an agreement with Lion to continue as our partner in Australia and look forward to working with them to

Ukraine: Ukraine’s barley exports decline during the first two months of the season 2017/18
|
Barley exports from Ukraine dropped by 10.5% over the first two months of the 2017/18 marketing season, while exports of Ukrainian barely to China are already 87% more than the volume shipped to China during the whole last marketing season, UkrAgroConsult reports.
Ukraine’s barley exports totaled 1.973 mln tonnes in July - August of the 2017/2018 marketing season, which is 10.5% less compared with the same period in the 2016/2017 marketing season.
At the same time, Ukrainian barley was actively purchased by China. In the reporting period, Ukraine supplied 560 thousand tonnes of barley to the Chinese market, which is already 87% more than for the whole last marketing season (300 thousand tonnes).
Ukraine also increased barley exports to the European Union countries - more than 220 thousand tonnes, or 18% more compared with the same period last marketing season.
Traditionally, the main market for Ukrainian barley is Saudi Arabia, which purchased over 680 thousand tonnes of barley, or 35% of total supplies, during the reporting period.

Russia: Barley and wheat export prices rise amid strong demand from buyers
|
Russian wheat and barley export prices rose last week amid strong demand from buyers including Egypt and Saudi Arabia, analysts said on October 9.
Black Sea prices for Russian wheat with 12.5 percent protein content and October delivery were at $193 a tonne on a free-on-board (FOB) basis at the end of last week, up $2 from a week earlier, agriculture consultancy IKAR said.
Egypt, the world's top wheat importer and the largest buyer of Russian wheat, agreed to purchase 180,000 tonnes of Russian wheat in a state tender on Oct. 3.
SovEcon, another Moscow-based consultancy, said barley prices climbed $2.5 to $189.5 per tonne. Saudi Arabia, one of the world's largest barley importers, bought 540,000 tonnes of feed barley in a state tender on Oct. 2.
As of Oct. 4, Russia had exported 12.5 million tonnes of grain since the start of the 2017/18 marketing season on July 1, up 20 percent from a year earlier. Wheat exports were up 12 percent at 9.6 million tonnes.
As of Oct. 5, Russian farmers had harvested 127.6 million tonnes of grain, before drying and cleaning, from 90 percent of the total area.
Farmers have also sown winter grains for next year's crop on 83 percent of the

Japan: Japanese brewers targeting female consumers
|
Faced with a shrinking beer market at home, Japanese brewers are shoring up sales by targeting women with a range of fizzy, fruity canned cocktails, but the strategy hasn’t been without some hiccups along the way, Reuters reported on October 3.
Traditional disapproval of women drinking in public has faded due to social change, with more women in the work force, earning money to spend any way they want.
But attitudes have changed in other ways too, and brewers had to learn old marketing strategies that relied on gender stereotyping weren’t going to persuade modern Japanese women to buy their drinks.
“I don’t need the patronizing ‘kawaii’ (cute) in my drinks to tell me that it’s appealing to me,” said Yukari Hakoiwa, a 26-year-old in the clothing industry. “I would much rather judge based on flavors.”
To tap the female market, brewers have focused on canned cocktails and other mixed drinks such as “chuhai” -- a word that combines “highball” and “shochu,” an alcohol made from rice, barley or sweet potatoes.
Surveys show Japanese women prefer these to beer.
But first the companies had to get women to overcome their reluctance to buy canned alcoholic drinks, which many women here associated with middle-aged men.
