LATER HARVEST - MORE GRAPEFRUIT

ABSTRACT
This is one of the outcomes of this Japanese research team looking into the influence of harvest date of hops. Specifically they looked into the varieties Cascade, Furano Beauty and Furano Magical; the latter two are Japanese bred varieties from Sapporo. Harvesting these varieties in a time window from 45 to 85 days after flowering, they found that the alpha content is realtively stable as is the content of 4MMP (black currant to catty), but the level of 3M4MP (3-mercapto-4 methylpentan-1-ol) that gives a grapefruit flavour rises significantly with a later harvest date. Also, the oil content in general increases with a later harvest. For Furano Beauty, later harvest leads to a more fruity, citrus and floral aroma in the trial beer where, as in Furano Magical, the flavour was just a different balance of sensory perceptions. If this can be confirmed for other varieties, we have a good indication how to increase grapefruit flavours in beer!

Barley news Canada: Barley markets described as ‘fairly snug’ due to tight supply
Feed barley markets in Western Canada continued to show strength last week with spot bids in some southern Alberta locations edging higher than C$205 per tonne, The Western Producer reported on October 13.

Allen Pirness, a feed grain trader with Market Place Commodities in Lethbridge, said barley markets have been tight in recent weeks with reduced acreage, lower-than-expected yields and limited producer sales supporting prices.

In mid-September, spot barley bids in Lethbridge were around C$195 per tonne. However, values have risen steadily over the past three weeks.

Some southern Alberta feedlots are now beginning to import U.S. corn at around C$212 a tonne.

“Barley markets are fairly snug,” Pirness said Oct. 5.

“We’re in a market right now that’s around C$205 in Lethbridge. You might even argue it’s $208 … so we’re kind of bumping right up against corn.

“There doesn’t seem to be any excess of barley this year with lower acreage and lower yields … so we’re starting to see the effects of a smaller barley crop already with the price staying fairly firm.”

In addition, wet and snowy weather in late September and early October in Alberta may have discouraged some barley deliveries, adding further support to already firm prices.

“The weather this week hasn’t ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Reformation Brewery planning second facility
The Woodstock-based venture that's played a role in introducing craft beer to quite a few Cherokee County residents has announced plans to open a second facility. Reformation Brewery said it hopes to open the second location at 105 Elm Street by the spring of 2018, Patch.com reported on October 12.

The new spot will house a second system dedicated to small batch experimental brews, and the space will serve as a research and development facility as well as a gathering place for community, the company said on October 12.

The site would be located near the Noonday Creek trailhead and the Elm Street Event Green.

“For some time, we’ve wanted more freedom to develop new beers and deliver an experience in the very heart of our city,” said Spencer Nix, CEO and co-founder of Reformation Brewery. “We're excited for our guests and local community to enjoy a fresh, new space with ample room to create moments that matter."

A new law that went into effect Sept. 1 played a part in the brewery's plans to expand its operations. Nix said the legislation has allowed Reformation to expand its offerings and Keeping Room hours, thus propelling the need to find more space and grow its ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Two Roads Brewing Company breaks ground on second brewing facility
Two Roads Brewing Company is building a second brewery that could turn even the staunchest wine connoisseur into a beer lover, CT Post reported on October 13.

The Stratford craft beer behemoth broke ground Thursday, October 12 on a $12 million, 25,000 sq. ft. barrel-aging facility dubbed "Area Two." The new site is being built on 2.5 acres of land adjoining the existing brewery, and is expected to open in the fall of 2018.

Area Two will focus exclusively on rare sour and barrel-aged beers, fruity styles that are popular in Europe and tend to be higher in alcohol content. Many of the recipes require wild yeast, which cannot be used in the main facility due to the potential for contamination.

Some of the Area Two brews will spend upwards of two-and-a-half years in wooden barrels sourced from wineries and distilleries, transforming into "something more wine-like than what we're used to," Two Roads Master Brewer Phil Markowski said.

Like wine, these beers are often made with fruit. Two Roads already has a small orchard on the orchard, growing sour cherries, black currants, elderberries and raspberries, with plans to expand and produce peaches, gooseberries and other fruits.

"We'll mix it up," Markowski said of the different ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, DE: Wilmington Brew Works to open as Wilmington’s first production brewery in 64 years
When was the last time Wilmington had a production brewery - a beer maker that packaged its brews for off-premise sale?

Dwight D. Eisenhower was president, Bill Haley & His Comets had a hit with "Rock Around the Clock" and I-95 didn't yet split the city in two.

It was 1954 when the Diamond State Brewery on Fifth Street closed for good and eventually was demolished, clearing space for the interstate.

This spring – 64 years after Diamond State died – a new production microbrewery called Wilmington Brew Works will open on Miller Road at the long-dormant former site of the Harper-Thiel Electroplating Co., a restored brownfield, the News Journal reported on October 13.

Fresh beer in the tasting room, live music and perhaps a restaurant are expected to fill the 2.3-acre site, which will retain its iconic Spanish colonial-style look and red tile roof.

While you won't see a bottling machine like Diamond State Brewery had when it produced 130,000 barrels a year, Wilmington Brew Works will be canning its 500 barrels of beer a year in a portion of the 11,000-square-foot building. The brews will be on draft at the brewery and the cans are expected to eventually be available at liquor stores ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WY & CO: Melvin Brewing looking to open new brewpub in Denver
Fresh from big wins at the Great American Beer Festival, Melvin Brewing is looking to open a new brewpub in Denver, The Know reported on October 11.

The Jackson, Wyo., brewer is negotiating the purchase of a warehouse in the Golden Triangle neighborhood at 1235 Delaware St.

Eric Henderson, a Melvin Brewing spokesman, said the deal for the property remains tentative. But co-founder Jeremy Tofte confirmed the company is looking to open its third brewpub in Denver in spring 2018.

Melvin started with a small brewing system at the Thai Me Up Restaurant in downtown Jackson and soon won rave reviews for its beer, particularly the West Coast-style hoppy and bitter India pale ales.

It opened a larger production brewery in Alpine, Wyo., in December 2015 and added a popular brewpub in Bellingham, Wash., in June.

This year, the brewery took home a top GABF prize for Brewery Group Brewer of the Year and won gold medals for Hupert MPA, a strong pale ale; and Wet Hop Melvin, a fresh hop ale. In 2015, it won small-brew pub brewer of the year. Head production brewer Dave Chichura is the former top brewer at Oskar Blues in Longmont.

Colorado is one of Melvin’s top markets, and Denver ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Aberrant Ales preparing to open in downtown Howell
Beer makers fired up brewing equipment for the first time this week at a new brewery expected to open soon in downtown Howell, the Livingston Daily reported on October 12.

The goal is to have six types of beer on tap when Aberrant Ales, 219 W. Grand River Avenue, opens, owners say.

"We'll have twelve different styles of beer once we're fully operational," said Clark Gill, of Howell, who owns the new brewery with his wife and fellow Brighton High School class of 1998 graduate Lisa Gill.

With their 10-barrel brew room operational and some final licensing hoops to jump through before they can start serving up original-recipe ales, the Gills expect to open "within a month," and they are hiring kitchen and waitstaff, they said.

They expect to have the following beers on tap right away:

Cream ale Blonde ale Amber ale Pale ale IPA Raspberry Saison

"In the next year, our goal is to distribute to local bars and restaurants and then get into packaging beers after that," Clark Gill said.

The first spark that lead to the new brewery happened around a camp fire about a decade ago, when Gill, his friend Tom Lincoln, of Brighton, and others starting talking about how cool it would ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Untold Brewing launching in Scituate on October 13
The excitement is building for the opening of a new brewery in Scituate.

Untold Brewing is on tap to open Friday, Oct. 13 and craft beer aficionados are waiting in eager anticipation, the Wicked Local Scituate reported.

“The feedback has been so positive,” said Kristin Greene, co-found/director of marketing for the brewery. “People have been stopping by to see if we’re open yet.”

Greene, her brother, brewer/co-founder Matt Elder, and head brewer/co-founder Kyle Hansen are the driving force behind Untold Brewery and have been working hard to set up shop in the community.

“I’ve wanted to do this for a while,” Elder said. “This is something I really enjoy.”

Elder came up with the vision for Untold back in 2014, when he quit his desk job to become a brewer at Georgetown Brewing in Seattle, Greene said.

“He wanted to return to Scituate to start the brewery because it’s his hometown and where his roots reside,” she said. “With both of us being born and raised in Scituate, the fact that we’ve been able to build and establish our community here has an incredibly special meaning.”

Elder and Hansen crossed paths when both were working at Georgetown Brewing Company.

“They trained us well,” Elder said of his former ...More info on site

Brewery news Zimbabwe & Zambia: Delta Corp to buy controlling stake in AB InBev’s National Breweries
Delta Corp Ltd., Zimbabwe’s biggest company by market value, agreed to buy a controlling stake in a Zambian sorghum-beer maker in the brewer’s first foray outside its home market, Bloomberg reported on October 13.

The purchase of National Breweries Plc will increase the Harare-based company’s exposure to the plant-based alcoholic drink, Delta said in a statement on October 13. The shares will be bought from Heinrich’s Syndicate Ltd., which is also a unit of the world’s largest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV.

“This investment opportunity fits well with the company’s multi-beverage strategy,” Delta said, without putting a value on the transaction.

The expansion into neighbouring Zambia will help Delta battle weak economic growth and a cash crunch in its home market, although on Wednesday the company reported a pickup in lager sales due to improved disposable incomes. The brewer reports official half-year results on Nov 9.

Delta said in a trading statement this week its second-quarter revenue rose 1 percent and for the first half of the year it was up 2 percent.

Whisky news Myanmar: ThaiBev buys combined 75% stake in two Myanmar distilleries
Thai Beverage Public Co has acquired a combined 75% stake in two Myanmar distilleries in a deal worth $742 million, hoping to tap into growth in the country's nascent spirits market, the Bangkok Post reported on October 13.

ThaiBev acquired the 75% stake in Myanmar Supply Chain and Services Go (MSCS) and Myanmar Distillery Co (MDC) from four third-party vendors, including Texas-based private equity firm TPG which sold its 50% stake in MDC, according to their separate announcements.

The deal gives Singapore-listed ThaiBev access to an expanded distribution network in Myanmar, as the food and beverage conglomerate looks to overseas market for growth after a recent sales dip.

ThaiBev sales in the first nine months of its fiscal year, from October 2016 to June 2017, dropped 6% year-on-year to 142 billion baht ($4.3 billion), due to slow economic growth and the observance of a national mourning period.

ThaiBev executives said earlier this month it planned to launch two new spirit products in November and that M&A activities in key markets such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar were needed.

The two Myanmar companies operate two production facilities in Yangon and Mandalay under the spirits brand Grand Royal, the largest whisky player in the country.

Brewery news Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation’s lager volumes continue to show recovery
Delta Corporation lager volumes continued to show recovery for the second consecutive quarter spurred largely by improved disposable incomes in the agriculture and small scale mining sectors, The Herald reported on October 12.

In a trading update for the September quarter, Delta said lager beer volumes jumped 11 percent for the quarter and half year to September 2017, driven by value packs and brands benefiting from improved income from mining and agriculture. However, performance in the period under review was characterised by mixed results across segments, impacted by transaction challenges largely dominated by electronic payments in the wake of worsening cash shortages in the country.

“Lager beer volume grew 11 percent above prior year for both the quarter and the six months with a mix in favour of value packs and brands benefiting from improved disposable incomes driven by agriculture and small scale mining,” company secretary Alex Makamure said in the update.

In the first quarter to June 30, lager volumes rose 12 percent. Sparkling beverages volume declined by 1 percent for the quarter and closed flat on prior year for the six months, while Maheu volumes went up 12 percent and 19 percent for the quarter and six months, respectively. ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Coca-Cola Amatil buys craft brewer Feral Brewing Company in Perth
Coca-Cola Amatil, chief bottler and distributor of Coca-Cola beverages across Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, has just acquired Perth’s Feral Brewing Company, Business Review Australia reported on October 12.

Amatil is no stranger to selling beer, distributing numerous well-known brands including Coors, Samuel Adams and Blue Moon. Operating 34 production facilities in the region, it is a top 50 Australian company and is 29.4%-owned by Coca-Cola itself.

Feral Brewing Company has been in operation since 2002, making it a well-established player in the craft industry. The fee paid by Amatil is yet to be disclosed.

Feral’s Founder Brendan Varis said the decision to sell, while being a difficult one, would allow the business to execute its bold growth ambitions far quicker with the financial and infrastructural backing being offered.

Data from 2016 shows that craft beer is the only continuously growing segment in the Australian beer industry, with overall volumes consumed actually falling. The study carried out by Beer Cartel revealed that Feral was voted the country’s best craft brewer, with pale ale the most consumed craft beer style.

Whether Amatil’s acquisition will shake up company strategy and management is yet to be seen, but quick growth looks to be nailed on given ...More info on site

Brewery news Taiwan: Taiwan’s Golden Age of craft brewing has just begun
Most people in the world probably don't think of Taiwan when it comes to craft brewing or micro-breweries. But those with their ear to the wire will tell you that the craft brewing scene in Taiwan has been steadily gaining steam over the past decade. And if the past few years are any indication, the popularity of high quality, local brews is set for some serious growth, Taiwan News reported on October 13.

The year 2002 was a starting point in Taiwan's foray into the world of small batch micro-brewing. That year Taiwan joined the WTO, and in order to adhere to WTO member policy, it was forced to break up most industry monopolies. The Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Company (TTL), who had been the only government sanctioned alcohol producer on the island with its Taiwan Beer, had to make way for competition.

But even after opening alcohol market in Taiwan the law didn't necessarily reflect the situation in practice. While a business could theoretically start brewing operations, the reality was that the TTL was nearly sealed in from competition, and only the most committed or affluent investors would be able to make a dent in the market.

However, several first generation brewers ...More info on site
