ABSTRACT
Hops bring a lot of wonderful flavours into beer but possibly
also some nasty ones.
A group of Japanese researchers looked into the formation of
2-mercapto-3-methyl-1-butanol (2M3MB) during wort
boiling and cooling. These compounds give an onionlike
flavor recognizable at levels as low as 0.4ppb. The
researchers were able to identify the relevant precursor
component, 2,3-expoxy-3-methylbutanal (EMB) and
propose it's derived from iso-alpha acids involving oxygen.
The transformation into 2M3MB requires H2S and a yet
undefined action of the yeast. Though they have gained a
good understanding of the concentrations of the precursor
during boiling and cooling, further work is required to
determine effective measurments that can prevent the
formation of 2M3MB.

Canada: Barley acreage to decrease by 10% in 2017-18
|
For 2017-18, Canada’s barley-seeded area is forecast to decrease by 10% from 2016-17 to a record low of 2.3 million hectares, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its October report.
Production is forecast to decrease 17% to 7.3 mln tonnes or record lows due to the lower area and a below average total yield. Although carry-in stocks are at a seven-year high, the lower production will cause total supply to decrease by 7% to 9.5 mln tonnes. Total domestic use is forecast to increase by 3% due to higher feed and industrial use. Total barley exports are forecast to decrease by 7% to 2.15 mln tonnes because of lower world barley trade due to high corn and wheat supplies. Barley carry-out stocks are forecast to decrease by 36% to 1.4 mln tonnes, falling below the previous five and ten year averages. The Lethbridge In-store feed barley price is forecast to increase due to the tighter total barley supplies, a higher US corn futures price and the decline in other feed grains supplies.

USA: Craft brewers launch crowdsourcing campaign to buy Anheuser-Busch InBev

The Brewers Association (BA), the not-for-profit organization that represents America’s small and independent brewers, has announced the craft brewing community’s intent to Take Craft Back from Big Beer. The #TakeCraftBack campaign—launched at TakeCraftBack.com—seeks to crowdsource the funds to buy Anheuser-Busch InBev, the international conglomerate that has been busy acquiring small breweries across the country.
Over the past several years, Big Beer has been attempting to buy their way into the craft beer movement by acquiring small breweries at a rapid rate and using their acquisitions to invent craft brewing bona-fides, the Association said.
The Take Craft Back campaign features a not-yet-superstar, Andy—an avowed lover of craft beer—who has stated that his affinity for craft beer makes him highly qualified to serve as a campaign spokesperson.
“Since 2011, Anheuser-Busch InBev has quietly acquired 10 small and independent breweries, but they won’t tell you that on their packaging,” said Andy. “Just try to name all 10 without Googling…exactly. Big Beer creates an ‘illusion of choice,’ but we are presenting them with a reality check—and hopefully, at the end of the day, with a real check too.

Canada, AB: Town Square Brewing softly opens in Edmonton
|
A new brewery and restaurant founded by three local young couples has announced its soft opening in Edmonton, Canadian Beer News reported on October 13.
Town Square Brewing has been launched by Megan & Brandon Boutin, Katrina & Tyler McNaughton, and Mellissa & Sterling Nordin, with Drew Sinden and Logan Dommett taking care of the brewing.
Located at 2919 Ellwood Drive, the establishment has been in soft launch mode for the last two weeks, offering growler fills and food including pizza, fresh pretzels, and other snacks during select hours.
The first three beers available include Forged Rye Amber Ale (5.2% abv), featuring “a complex malt flavour with spicy, biscuit and nutty undertones”; Cornerstone IPA (6.5% abv), with “a huge nose of citrus as well as a punch of grapefruit, orange and lime”; and 2919 Blonde Ale (5% abv), “a clean and crisp light ale that’s refreshing and easy to drink no matter the season.”
The official grand opening of Town Square will take place on the weekend of November 3rd-5th, at which point regular business hours will be confirmed. In addition, a portion of sales on select beers and pizzas will be donated to local charities.

USA, IA: Family starts hops farm in northeast Iowa
|
Keri and Mike Byrum "hopped to it" not long after they moved to Cedar Falls from Orlando, Fla, the Sioux City Journal reported on October 15.
Keri Byrum, a Cedar Falls native, and husband Mike Byrum, originally from Virginia, were previously involved in real estate development in Florida. They spent a big part of the spring on their hands and knees planting nine acres of hops plants — about 4,200 in all. They plan to add another three acres yet this fall.
The result is Cedar Falls Hops Co. While there are a number of smaller backyard-style hops-growing operations, this is one of the larger hops-growing operations in northeast Iowa, just west of Cedar Falls, in partnership with Keri Byrum's dad, Rusty Leymaster.
They got into the business for two main reasons: The first is craft brewing is a growing industry in Iowa.

"We also like beer a lot," Keri Byrum told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier .

USA, MN: Klockow Brewing Company to open its doors in Grand Rapids on October 28
|
Craft breweries are springing up in small towns across the country, and this month Grand Rapids MN is joining the ranks. Klockow Brewing Company is opening on October 28th in a remodeled warehouse at 36 SE 10th Street, just off Highway 169 near Walgreens. Tasha and Andy Klockow (pronounced CLOCK-oh) are the owners, KAXE reported on October 13.
For Andy Klockow, brewing beer is a creative act. He learned how to brew from his dad: “My dad did a lot of home brewing when I was growing up. He makes some pretty darn good beer and wine, and kind of as a kid I’d help him bottle and maybe sip the foam here and there. Once I got into college he got me a homebrew kit for one of my birthdays and I just fell in love with the hobby, and just kind of how creative you can get with it. You know, if you add hops at a different spot, or add different spices or different things…it’s a lot like cooking; a lot like baking, and you get to express some creativity.”

USA, PA: Towamencin’s Blueprint Brewing Company hopes to be open within weeks
|
A planned brewery in Towamencin has now cleared one last hurdle, and hopes to be open within weeks, the Montgomery Newspapers reported on October 13.
Blueprint Brewing Company, a trio of local brewers operating in an industrial space on Gehman Road, received their conditional use approval on October 11, the last major obstacle before opening their doors to the public.
“We’re looking to open next weekend, at this point, in the 640 square feet that we’ve been granted,” said co-owner Jason Scholl.
Scholl and co-owners Cory McDonald and Kyle Fetch, along with attorney Kim Freimuth, made their final arguments to Towamencin’s supervisors on October 11, seeking conditional use approval to allow retail sales at a brewery within the township’s limited industrial district. Plans for the brewery were first announced and discussed back in April, and over the summer the group has worked through several steps of the approval process, including a zoning change to allow the sales of dozens of their specialty brews and blends, including gluten-free beers.

USA, NY: The Fifth Hammer Brewing Company opens up its facilities to the public
|
The Fifth Hammer Brewing Company has opened up its facilities and taproom to the public, a little over a year since the owners moved into a former industrial space in Long Island City, the Long Island City Post reported on October 12.
The brewery and taproom, located at 10-28 46th Ave., opened on Oct. 6 in a “grand opening weekend”, according to the brewery’s Facebook page. A 15-barrel brewery, fully completed on Sept. 15, makes up the brewery component of the site, while a taproom next door serves Fifth Hammer brews along with local craft beer. Some finger foods will be served in the taproom, but the focus will be kept on the beers.
Regularly scheduled live music will also fill the walls of the tap room—for the grand opening weekend, the music portion was spontaneously kicked off by Chris Cuzme, the brewery’s co-founder, who also happens to play the saxophone.
Cuzme, along with David Scharfstein, moved into the 46th Ave. space in Aug. last year. Prior to starting a new brewery, Cuzme worked as a brewer in a now defunct pub in Greenwich Village, where he learned to craft a wide variety of beers.

USA, DE: Midnight Oil Brewing Co. slated to open in Glasgow later this year

Delaware’s newest craft brewery is slated to open late this year, delawarebusinessnow.com reported on October 16.
Midnight Oil Brewing Co. is finishing up work at its location in the Pencader complex south of Newark in the Glasgow area.
Midnight Oil will be the first production brewery in the Bear-Glasgow area. For two decades, Stewart’s Brewing Co. has operated a brewpub-restaurant a few miles east off Route 40 in Bear.
Midnight Oil Brewing began when Mike Dunlap started brewing a homemade beer in his home. The hobby among friends evolvedinto a business.
The company’s offerings have been available at festivals and other special events in the area.
The name comes out of the term “burning the midnight oil”. The expression is used to describe the extra time and effort required in completing work on a deadline.
“One of the objectives of the Midnight Oil Brewing Company is to create a beer that people look forward to after a hard, productive day of work. Now, with the upcoming opening of their new brewery, the company is excited to expand their business and offer their premium craft brews to more of their community,” a release stated.

USA, ME: Bath Brewing Company coming to change the brewing scene in Sagadahoc County

The beer industry in Maine is a big deal. The Coastal Journal has published plenty of stories about the increasing popularity and importance to the local economy of this centuries-old drink.
Yet throughout the explosion in brewing around the state, Sagadahoc County has remained underrepresented when it comes to local brewers. Sure, Sea Dog Brewing has been serving great beer for a while, but that was founded in Camden, not Topsham.
Nearby Brunswick has some new breweries; Freeport has Maine Beer Company; Lincoln County has multiple breweries, but Sagadahoc had no brewery to truly call its own.
Until now.
Three people are changing that with Bath Brewing Company. Mike Therriault, Terry Geaghan, and developer Sean Ireland hope to fill the void in the City of Ships with their brewpub, opening in November.
“We perceived a niche, and we thought it would be good for the community to have,” said Geaghan. “There seemed to be a void in a state-wide movement.”
Before any confusion arises, Geaghan IS related to Geaghan Brothers, who run successful breweries in Bangor.
But Bath Brewing Company is an entirely local venture and will not be affiliated with its northern cousin.

Canada, NS: Lower Sackville couple aiming to open Ol’ Biddy’s Brew House by December
|
A well-known homebrewer in the Maritimes is getting set to launch a nanobrewery soon out of his home in Lower Sackville.
In an interview with with Maritime Beer Report, Keith Forbes says that he and his wife Erin Delaney-Forbes are aiming to open Ol’ Biddy’s Brew House by December.
Brewing on a 1 barrel system, Forbes plans to start on schedule of three batches every two weeks, with initial brands to include Funktown American Pale Ale, Even Gooder Coffee Brown, and Disco Inferno Red IPA, all based on Forbes’ award-winning homebrew recipes.
Ol’ Biddy’s beers will be available exclusively on tap at local bars and restaurants, although growler sales are being considered for the future.

USA, IN: Happy Brewing brewpub to open soon in one of Indianapolis’ hottest neighborhoods
|
Cold, locally-brewed beer will soon be tap for what many hope is about to be one of Indianapolis' hottest neighborhoods, WRTV Indianapolis reported on October 12.
If you go north on Illinois street, just north of 38th, you'll see the re-done and re-energized Tarkington Park on your right and a place called "Happy Brewing" on your left.
It was the site of the former Double Eight grocery store until it closed last year.
Co-owner and brewer Gabe Soukup and his business and beer partner, Dave Bellar, are already making the beer.
They’re also hands-on with the remodel and rebuilding as they transform the old grocery store, which used to be a Ford dealership, into a local brewpub serving their own beer, Indiana-made ice cream, and a kitchen that will turn out hot food including flatbreads and pizza.
The $250,000 remake is an investment in the neighborhood on the southern border of Butler-Tarkington.

Australia: Craft beer industry slowly swallowed by large corporations
|
Australians may be drinking beer at 65-year lows, but one segment is bucking the trend — craft beer.
According to a recent report, Australian craft breweries generate almost A$500 million in yearly revenue, and this is growing at 10 per cent per year, ABC reported on October 18.
But while drinkers may imagine their craft beer is being brewed by a small operation, the reality is the industry is being swallowed by large corporations.
There are a number of reasons for this. Large corporations obviously want access to a lucrative and growing market, but craft brewers also need access to capital, better distribution deals and marketing expertise.
Despite there being almost 400 craft brewers in Australia, global giants Lion and AB InBev control more than 50 per cent of the market.
It's not just market share, though. Large corporations own many of our most prominent craft beer brands, such as Little Creatures, James Squires, and White Rabbit (Lion), as well as Matilda Bay Brewing, Wild Yak, and Goose Island (AB InBev).
Even soft drink manufacturers like Coca-Cola Amatil have moved into the market, snapping up brands like Blue Moon and Yenda. Last week, Coca-Cola purchased the iconic Feral Brewing.

Zimbabwe: Delta Beverage warns suppliers against temptation to hike prices
|
Delta Beverages has warned its suppliers to carefully manage their value chain and desist from the temptation to hike prices, local newspaper Bulawayo reported on October 17.
In a memo sent out by the company's Supply Chain director Cynthia Malaba dated October 16, 2017, a copy of which Bulawayo’s Harare Bureau is in possession of, the beverages maker notes that it has been inundated by appeals from its suppliers who are seeking to hike prices due to the increasing cost of foreign currency.
But the group has flatly turned down the proposals, which would have seen them passing the price hikes to consumers, rather saying the suppliers should manage their value chain or opt out of supplying the group if they can't continue with current rates.
"Recently, a number of suppliers have approached us with proposed increases motivated by difficulties in sourcing foreign currency," wrote Mrs Malaba.
"We would like to advise our valued suppliers as follows: We are unable to take selling price increases on our beverage portfolio. Instead we are continually searching for ways to improve our value chain to make our products more affordable to our customers.
"We urge business partners to carefully manage their value chains with particular focus on competitiveness

Spain: Cervezas San Miguel moves registered headquarters from Barcelona to Malaga

Cervezas San Miguel S.L.U., one of the firms that belong to the Mahou San Miguel beer group, has decided to move its registered headquarters from Barcelona to Malaga, where it has had a brewery since 1966, SurInEnglish.com reported on October 9.
The decision has been explained by the firm's "commitment to guarantee maximum legal security for the company and its professionals", sources said last week.
San Miguel wasn’t the first firm to announce its departure from Catalonia due to the uncertainty created by the regional government's drive towards a unilateral declaration of independence.
The first was Banco Sabadell on October 5, which was followed by Caixabank, Gas Natural and several others.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation looking for alternative raw materials markets

Beverage maker Delta Corporation is scouting for alternative markets to source cheaper brewing grain, as the bulk of farmers who traditionally produce for the company under a contract arrangement are shifting to Command Agriculture, which is offering a higher price, the Zimbabwe Independent reported on October 17.
This summer cropping season, government plans to spread a capital outlay of about US$334 million to support production of key crops such as maize, sorghum, and soya beans under Command Agriculture.
An attractive maize producer price being offered to farmers under Command Agriculture by the Grain Marketing Board (GMB), currently pegged at US$370 per tonne, has attracted producers previously enlisted by the brewer.
In an email sent to businessdigest, the brewer said it would not be able to offer a producer price to compete with the US$370 per tonne price offered to farmers under the government programme.
“The major challenge in the contracting arrangement for brewing cereals is the new framework under Command Agriculture that guarantees very high producer prices to farmers,” the beverage manufacturer said.
“The Company is unlikely to attract enough farmers into its schemes, as most of them have moved over to the Command scheme.
