Australia: Coopers Brewery seeing ‘patchy but promising’ start to beer sales in new financial year
|
Coopers Brewery is seeing a “patchy but promising” start to beer sales in the new financial year, and returning to its malting roots after a 15-year gap will also bring in additional revenues, The Advertiser reported on November 9.
Australia’s largest locally owned brewer said sales in 2017 grew 2.9 per cent to a record 83.8 million litres, helping the SA-based group cap 24 years of consecutive growth in volume.
As with previous years, consumption in SA was on the decline to 19 million litres, from 19.2 million litres in 2016.
Managing director Tim Cooper said the state’s challenging demographics and increasing competition from craft beers were affecting sales.
“Mostly though it’s because SA has an ageing population with stagnant overall growth. Most other states have younger, growing populations,” he said.
NSW was its strongest market with sales up 6.9 per cent.
NSW made up 27 per cent of total sales, followed by SA with 22.9 per cent, Victoria with 18.7 per cent and Queensland with 16.2 per cent.
Profit before tax fell to A$33.4 million, down 3.5 per cent from A$34.6 million in 2015-16, due to writedowns associated with its Mr Beer (USA) business.

Canada: Molson Coors acquires Quebec craft brewery Trou du Diable
|
MillerCoors parent Molson Coors said on November 9 it has acquired the Quebec craft brewery Trou du Diable, a partnership forged with the intent of expanding the brand’s distribution.
Molson Coors Canada will fold the award-winning microbrewer into its Six Pints Specialty Beer Company, the company’s Canadian craft division. Terms were not disclosed.
Trou du Diable operates a restaurant/brewpub and a standalone brewery in Shawinigan, Quebec, a city of about 50,000 on the Saint-Maurice River roughly halfway between Montreal and Quebec City. The transaction does not include the restaurant, which will remain independent.
It is the fourth Canadian craft brewery Molson Coors has acquired in recent years, joining Creemore Springs, Granville Island Brewing Company and Brasseur de Montreal, each of which fall under its Six Pints division.
“Partnerships like this one and those that we have established in the past demonstrate the importance that we place on the craft and specialty beer segment. They also show that Molson Coors is ready to invest to delight beer drinkers of all kinds,” said Frederic Landtmeters, president and CEO of Molson Coors Canada.
Trou Du Diable, which was founded in December 2005, is known for its saisons, barrel-aged and other specialty beers, opened a second brewery in 2013

Cameroon: New brewer SABC intends to brew craft beer in Cameroon
|
New player has announced its entry on Cameroon’s beer market. Société brassicole artisanale camerounaise (Sobrartcam) is the newest competitors to Société anonyme des brasseries du Cameroun (SABC), Diageo, and UCB, Le Bled Parle reported on November 8.
The company, however, intends to operate in a slightly different sector – it will be specializing in the production of craft beers and operate in trading of brewing raw materials, it is reported.
The nation’s beer sector is doing rather well, according to SABC data. Last year Cameroon’s total beer consumption is estimated to have reached 6.5 mln hl, with imports declining by 0.6% versus 2015. SABC is the market leader with a share of 74%, followed by Guinness (15%), and UCB (10%).

Ireland: New alcohol law set to double canned beer prices
|
Ireland is set to double the price of cans of beer after a new minimum pricing law passed its third stage on November 8, the Irish Post reported on November 9.
The new Public Health Alcohol Bill will skyrocket the price of cheaper beer should it pass its fourth and fifth stages in the Seanad.
Cheap wine has also been targeted by the proposed legislation – with a mandatory minimum cost of €7.50 for every bottle of wine firmly on the table.
Specially discounted multi-buys – such as Guinness, Carlsberg and Budweiser – have also been earmarked for a price increase by the Bill.
However following strong lobbying from the drinks industry, the Irish Government dropped plans to force shop owners to stop all alcoholic beverages from being displayed.
Health Minister Simon Harris tweeted on November 8: “After eight hours and 35 mins of debate in Seanad Eireann, the Public Health Alcohol Bill has passed Committee Stage.
“On to the next step now! Lots to do including engaging with retailers.
“Important work – landmark public health measures long overdue.”
Mr Harris was speaking after he told the Seanad that “harm” to the Irish people will “go down” if the price of cheap alcohol increases.

Cyprus: October beer sales decline due to fall in exports
|
New figures show that beer sales in Cyprus have dropped recently.
Local brewery sales fell by 16,193 litres in October compared to the same month last year, the Famagusta Gazette reported on November 10 citing the Cyprus News Agency.
The decrease is due to a fall in beer exports and to a drop in local consumption on a monthly basis.
Beer is a favourite tipple in Cyprus, with Keo and Leon being favourites.
Statistical Service of Cyprus figures show that beer sales this October stood at 3,022,374 litres, against 3,038,567 in October 2016 and 4,211,159 in September.
Local consumption in October rose to 2,929,964 litres, from 2,919,006 in the same month of 2016, while on a monthly basis it decreased from 4,201,498 in September.
Beer exports in October fell to 92,410 litres, from 119,561 last year, while compared to September they recorded a big increase of 82,749 litres.

Lebanon: Craft beer making headway in Lebanon market

For decades, beer in Lebanon has meant just one thing: the ubiquitous local pilsner, Almaza. But now a crop of local microbrews is making headway in the home market, the Yahoo Singapore News reported on November 10.
On the shore of the seaside town of Batroun, 34-year-old Jamil Haddad presides over the Colonel brewery, now just over three years old and, he says, expanding fast.
"Every year I'm growing like crazy," he told AFP, as workers put the finishing touches to a stage in the brewery's garden for its annual festival.
This year alone, thanks in part to his new beach bar a few hundred metres from the brewery, business is up 45 percent, he said.
"When I opened in 2014, I was afraid. Are people going to be okay with this concept? It's new, it's not traditional, it's different," Haddad said.
Initially he set his sights low, producing just a single lager, aiming for a product that would be accessible for beer drinkers used to the crisp but one-note taste of Almaza (diamond in Arabic).
"Then I was surprised... I found that many people who came, they know what (it) means, different kind of beers," he said.

India: Belgian beers Chimay and Delirium coming to India

It’s brewed by monks within the walls of an abbey and profits from it go to charity. Now, Belgium’s Trappist beer Chimay will be available in India. Livemint reported on November 9.
Chimay is entering the Indian market at a time the Belgian royal couple King Philippe and Queen Mathilde are in India to mark 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Along with Chimay, Belgian beer Delirium, with its famous pink elephant logo, is also entering the Indian market. India will be the 60th market for Chimay and Delirium—two of the finest makers of ales in the world.
Both Chimay and Delirium will be imported, distributed and marketed in India by New Delhi-based Hema Connoisseur Collections Pvt. Ltd, an importer and distributor of some of top international liquor brands.
“India is probably the most difficult market. But the potential is huge. The beer market in India has matured in recent years, and a section of the society is exposed to Belgian beers which are known for quality, tradition and sustainability. We feel this is the right time,” said Alain de Laet, chief executive officer, Huyghe Brewery that owns the Delirium brand.
