LOOKING FOR THE WHOLE RANGE OF BITTER ACIDS?

ABSTRACT
The common bitter acids in beer are usually analysed using different HPLC industry methods. In case you are in the possession of an underused LC-Q-ToF-MS why not try a HRMS (High Resolution Mass Spectometry) method? HRMS is a promising technique that enables outstanding performance in substance identification. With this method the similtanious quantification of 33 bitter acids (from the different iso-alpha acids to humulinones and xanthohumol, etc.) is possible with an easy sample preparation and a short analysis run time. Interested?

Brewery news USA: Craft beer expected to produce volume growth of up to 6% this year
Craft beer's days of heady double-digit growth may be over, but it is expected to produce volume growth of 5 to 6 percent this year and outperform the broader category in the US, CNBC reported on November 10.

Susquehanna analyst Pablo Zuanic said craft beer is forecast to represent about 12 percent of total beer volume this year, up slightly from 2016 levels. He's basing the information on briefings with the Brewer Association's chief economist, Bart Watson.

Most of the new volume growth this year within the craft beer segment will come from the smaller breweries, the analyst said. Also, he points out that retail shelves won't help much since stores are not adding space to the packaged category.

The analyst said what's growing is essentially "concentrated mainly among the local and regional players," not the big-name brands like Boston Beer and Sierra Nevada.

As a result, Zuanic wrote that he's "somewhat concerned" when it comes to Boston Beer's medium-term outlook. Last month, Boston Beer reported weaker-than-expected revenue as its flagship Sam Adams and Angry Orchard brands remained challenged.

Indeed, the larger brands such as Boston Beer have suffered in recent years from a perception of being not viewed as authentic craft anymore. The company ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Molson Coors to build new brewery in Longueil - report
Longueuil, Quebec will be the new home to Molson Coors as the beer brewing behemoth has settled on a location near St-Hubert Airport and the Canadian Space Agency for its new production facility.

Several sources confirmed the plans in a La Presse report, saying the new plant will require a C$600 million investment and that the locale was decided on due to its proximity to highways.

The City of Montreal had reportedly proposed a site in the eastern part of the island which were found unsatisfactory due to traffic possibly disrupting the transport of raw materials and finished product. According to one source, one of the proposed sites was contaminated and didn’t contain enough space for the proposed project.

A spokesperson for Molson said no decision had been made and a meeting had been requested in recent days between company leaders and incoming mayor Valerie Plante.

Plante said she has not given up on keeping Molson in Montreal and plans to meet with Geoff Molson on November 11 at a Montreal Canadiennes’ hockey game at the Bell Centre.

In July, Molson Coors announced its intention to build the new facility rather than upgrade the 231-year-old facility near the Jacques-Cartier Bridge. That site will be home ...More info on site

Brewery news North America: AB InBev replacing North American chief to stem sales decline
The world’s biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch InBev, is replacing its North American chief to stem a years-long sales decline in its largest market, Reuters reported on November 13.

The maker of Budweiser and Bud Light said on November 13 that Joao Castro Neves would be succeeded on Jan. 1 by another Brazilian company veteran, Michel Doukeris, currently chief sales officer of the global business.

“Neves had been viewed as a potential successor to Brito. If Doukeris can deliver on growth in the U.S., this would boost his chances for the top spot,” Jefferies analysts said.

Other contenders identified by the analysts are David Almeida, chief integration officer, and Ricardo Tadeu, president of African operations.

Brito said it was too early to speculate on CEO succession.

“It’s up to the board to make that decision. But for me, I’ve been here 20-plus years and I’ll be here another 20.”

Brito said he had discussed the departure of Neves with him for nearly a year and that it was a “personal decision”.

Doukeris, a 44-year-old Brazilian citizen with Greek heritage, last year moved his family to New York, the de facto headquarters of what is one of Europe’s biggest companies with a market value of about $200 billion.

Brewery news USA, MI: The North Channel Brewing Co. opens its doors in Manistee
After years of hard work and dedication to its craft, the North Channel Brewing Co. finally opened its doors to the public in downtown Manistee on Friday, 10, the Manistee News Advocate reports.

Community members gathered outside of the brewery in support of the new business. Staff members and other city officials participated in a formal ribbon cutting ceremony.

Before the brewery opened at 5 p.m., Aaron May, brewery co-owner, said the staff is anxious to see how the public responds to the menu and beer list. He said he plans to stick around Manistee for many years to come.

“At the moment I am a little nervous, because it has been years of planning things out,” he said. “But if people come here and enjoy the beer, food and the atmosphere, then I am thrilled. I expect to be here for years to come.”

Left vacant for many years in downtown Manistee, the historical building located on Washington Street was restored with the new brewpub and upstairs apartments, which will not be ready until next year.

Bringing the flavor to the downtown area, the bar has 12 taps, which Carl Eskridge, manager, said will alternate based on the brews/hard ciders that are available and ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Ministry of Agriculture changes regulations to benefit breweries and distilleries
The B.C. Ministry of Agriculture has announced a change to regulations that threatened several brewery and distillery projects in the province, the Vancouver Sun reported on November 9.

The change repeals a 2015 rule that designated breweries, distilleries and meaderies in the Agricultural Land Reserve as farm uses only if at least 50 per cent of the farm product used to make the alcohol is grown on-site. That set them apart from B.C. wineries on ALR land, which are permitted to buy nearly all of the grapes they use to make wine from other farms. Breweries and distilleries were not.

Shortly after the rule was instituted, Persephone Brewing Co., a small brewery near Gibsons, petitioned the government to make the change to the Agricultural Land Commission Act.

“We just want to be treated the same as wineries,” said Persephone co-founder Mark Brand, a Vancouver restaurateur, in March. “We sought an exemption (from the act) and honestly we thought that would lead to change in the regulations. We were fairly certain those changes were on their way.”

“We can see what (relaxed regulations) have done for the wine industry — there are over 300 wineries in B.C.,” he said.

Harry Sidhu of Abbotsford noted that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Pollyanna Brewing Co. opens second location in Roselle
Pollyanna Brewing Co. opened its second suburban location in Roselle on Friday, November 10, The Daily Herald reported on November 11.

The new location, called Roselare Brewery & Tap Room, is at 245 E. Main St.

The new establishment includes a brewing area, a 97-seat tap room, a 3,000-square-foot German-style beer garden and a small retail area.

Roselare is a name that, according to founders at Pollyanna, is derived from two inspirational locations; the historic West Flanders city of Roeselare, Belgium and Roselle, Illinois.

Pollyanna Brewing Co. was established in 2014 in Lemont where it also operates a taproom and "fermentarium."

The owners and founders of the brewery are Head Brewer Brian Pawola, President Paul Ciciora, Treasurer Don Ciciora, VP of Operations Ed Malnar and CFO Ryan Weidner.

"Roselare will be a destination business that will bring in patrons from the entire Chicagoland area," said Natalie Engel, Roselle economic development coordinator.

Pollyanna Brewing Company is a craft brewery that specializes in mixed culture fermentations and wood aging experiments, and has imported two new oak foudres for the Roselle location.

The tap room at Roselare will operate on a bring-your-own-food model, including delivery from local restaurants and food trucks.

Brewery news USA, KY: Henderson Brewing Co. expected to open this coming spring
Work has begun on the interior of what will be Henderson's first microbrewery, or brewpub, The Gleaner reported on November 10.

And if anyone doubts the "craft" that will go into this beer business, you only have to look at the efforts each of the five partners is currently bringing to bear to make it a reality.

From the law to finance, sales and marketing and engineering, each of the five co-founders, all from Henderson, have a set of special skills being utilized in the venture. They expect to open as the Henderson Brewing Co. this coming spring.

It doesn't hurt that partner Doug Laramie, a pharmacist by trade, is also a multiple medal winner in the home brewing category at the Kentucky State Fair.

The other four co-founders are Sean Wilder, David Osborn, Austin Vowels and Rob Toerne.

The group came to know each other through the Henderson Beer Club, and the actual idea started as a series of Facebook chats.

"And no one's been smart enough to jump off yet," joked Wilder. "I think it's interesting how the skill set came together, but it wasn't intentional at all."

One unlikely event that did provide a spark: Vowels, the attorney of the group, attended a Kentucky ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WA: Volunteers trying to revive brewing in Tumwater
The original home of Olympia Beer is coming back to life. It is part of the overall effort to bring brewing back to Tumwater, KOMO News reported on November 10.

This historic brewery hasn't seen this much love and attention in more than a century. It was built around 1900 on the banks of the Deschutes River with easy access to the artesian water wells where owner Leopold Schmidt coined the phrase 'it's the water'.

But in 1915, beer production ended with Prohibition. Olympia Beer would be brewed 20 years later at a newer plant across the road leaving the iconic building to decay.

"It's always a good feeling coming into this building," Paul Knight said. "It has so much history."

He is the former longtime brew master of Olympia Beer and among the first to volunteer to bring the place back to life. "When we get this building rehabilitated we hope to have a small brewing operation in here again."

A brew pub, restaurant or museum are all possibilities. But first, the old place has to get new again.

The roofing being hoisted is only temporary to keep rain and the elements out while work begins to shore up the brickwork and put a ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Riverside Brewing Company LLC planned by a husband-and-wife team in Cambridge Springs
A Guys Mills couple plan to build and operate a brewery and restaurant where Riverside: The Inn at Cambridge Springs stood.

Jason and Deanna Howles, through their new company, Riverside Brewing Company LLC, bought the 25-acre property for $93,000.

The couple also own and will continue to operate Blooming Valley Landscape & Supply.

Their new business is rooted in a longtime hobby.

“We have been brewing craft beer for 10 years now and have realized that this passion isn’t going away,” Deanna Howles said in a news release. “We aren’t getting any younger and we have both dreamed of owning a restaurant and brewery for some time.”

The Riverside Inn stood on the property along French Creek from its opening in 1885 until May 2, when it burned to the ground. The fire began in the inn kitchen and quickly spread throughout the rambling frame structure. The cause of the fire was not determined.

The property is the perfect location for a new destination business, Deanna Howles said.

The “Riverside couldn’t be a more perfect place to do it,” she said. “We would be honored with community support as we do our best to preserve history, give people jobs back and bring life back to the Cambridge ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Heaven and Ale Brewing Co. now open in North Chattanooga’s Business Development Center
Heaven and Ale Brewing Co. is now open in North Chattanooga’s Business Development Center, Nooga.com reported on November 10.

Brewing company owners Joe Winland, Brian Winland and Marc Powell said they want to deliver an experience that fosters kinship.

They want patrons to feel close to the brewing process and comfortable in the space.

“Our mission is to deliver a diverse lineup of unique, delicious craft beers to our Chattanooga family in an environment that promotes conversation and camaraderie,” Winland said in a prepared statement.

Owners aim to provide something every beer drinker will love.

The 8,000-square-foot space houses a 10-barrel brewhouse and a tasting room that features 16 Heaven and Ale Brewing Co. beers on tap.

There are also 32-ounce crowlers to go.

“A lot of our beers will never leave the taproom,” he also said. “But we’re built to grow. And that’s what we ultimately hope to do.”

The taproom also has a small plates menu that includes cheese and charcuterie boards and open-faced sandwiches.

The opening comes after Joe Winland launched his first craft beer retail store and tasting room in North Chattanooga in 2013 and later expanded to Ooltewah.

There’s also a Southside Heaven and Ale location in the works.

Brewery news USA, WI: Rhinelander Brewing Company purchases building for new brewery
The return of active commercial beer brewing in Rhinelander took a giant leap forward on November 8 when the president and CEO of Rhinelander Brewing Company announced the company had purchased an 8,000-square foot building on Brown Street, the Rhinelander Daily News reported.

The company has purchased the former home of Forest TV and Appliance at 43 S. Brown, Rhinelander Brewing's Jyoti Auluck announced in a press release.

The new location will house a taproom, brewery and expanded gift shop by the end of February, she said.

Rhinelander Beer is currently brewed under contract by Minhas Brewery in Monroe. Auluck purchased the brand and all of its assets in 2009, and reintroduced the iconic 7-ounce Rhinelander Shorty in 2011. In a previous interview with the River News, she said returning at least some of the brewing and bottling operations to Rhinelander has been her goal since she made the purchase.

Local brewer and craft beer enthusiast Al Ewan will be the new brewmaster and Brenda O'Rourke will serve as the manager of the taproom, retail store and bottle shop.

The press release announcing the purchase says it took Auluck two years to bring the Rhinelander Shorty back, including a sizable capital investment including creating ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Harty Brewing Co. to open brewpub in Camp Hill in fall 201
Harty Brewing Co. is coming to Camp Hill, PennLive.com reported on November 14.

For the first time, residents will be able to order a beer in the Cumberland County borough.

The once-dry municipality is welcoming businesses licensed to sell booze after voters in May's primary election decided to end the borough's dry status.

Harty's owners Michael Harty and Lauren Ishaq, who opened a nano-brewery in 2016 at the Shops at Walden development in Silver Spring Township, are taking over the former Mid Penn Bank at 2101 Market St.

The brew pub with a taproom will serve Harty's beers as well as Pennsylvania wines, spirits and ciders along with foods such as panini sandwiches and pretzels. They hope to open it in fall 2018.

"The bigger space came from just how awesome it has been for the past 11/2 years," Ishaq said.

The couple say the new brewery will add to Camp Hill's neighborhood feel and be in walking distance for many residents. About five years ago the couple lived in Camp Hill and enjoyed taking walks with their family to the library and places such as Cornerstone Coffeehouse.

"Market Street has such huge potential. I think this is just going to enhance the experience for everyone's ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Amnesia Brewing to close its doors on December 1
Has the Portland area’s craft beer scene peaked? That was the question running through the heads of local beer drinkers when The Commons Brewery closed and Ross Island Brewery went up for sale this fall. Now there’s more news to put a tear in local beer: Brewpublic reports Amnesia Brewing will turn off the lights on December 1.

Amnesia Brewing started its largely successful run on North Mississippi Avenue in 2003. It relocated to Washougal, WA, in 2013, but the move didn’t bring about the hoped-for results.

“Unfortunately, with breweries and taprooms opening up seemingly every month, the market has become somewhat saturated,” Amnesia reported to Brewpublic in an email.

At last count, Portland had the most craft breweries of any U.S. city, with somewhere around 60. Portland craft beer has become as iconic as to Portland as food carts, which are also facing challenges, with several pods recently closing. Apparently Portland’s explosive population growth isn’t enough to keep high-profile breweries like Amnesia and The Commons from closing.

Brewery news Indonesia: Brewer Delta Jakarta expects sales to pick up by the end of the year
Indonesian beer producer Delta Djakarta expects sales to pick up by the end of this year despite weak figures in the first half caused by restrictive government regulation and weak purchasing power, the Jakarta Globe reported on November 13.

The company plans to expand its export market, improve business efficiency and apply a different marketing strategy to counter Indonesian customers' weakening purchasing power.

Delta — famous for its iconic beer Anker — expects its revenue to grow by 5 percent to 7 percent by the end of the year.

The Jakarta City Administration has a 23.3 percent stake in Delta, which produces and holds licenses for seven beer brands, including Philippine-produced San Miguel and Denmark-based Carlsberg.

The beer producer booked sales of Rp 723.45 billion ($53.4 million) in the first half of 2017, 11.8 percent lower than in the same period last year. However, its net income expanded by 18.23 percent to Rp 125.96 billion during the period.

"Weak sales in the first half of this year were due to government regulation [that bans sales of alcoholic beverages in minor retailers] and weak purchasing power," Delta marketing director Ronny Titiheruw told reporters in October.

Brewery news Sri Lanka: Beer industry expected to regain market share due to more favourable tax regime in the 2018 budget
Sri Lanka's beer industry will regain market share from hard liquor following a more favourable tax regime for the segment announced in the 2018 budget, according to Fitch Ratings.

The budget reduced excise taxes on strong beer by 33 per cent and raised that on hard liquor by 2 per cent, effective immediately. The budget also introduced a Nation Building tax of 2 per cent on all alcoholic beverage sales, which will take effect from April 2018.

Fitch said in a media statement that with the latest tax revisions and barring further changes, beer's market share of total reported alcohol consumption in Sri Lanka would increase to around 24 – 25 per cent in the medium term.

“We expect hard liquor sales volumes to contract 2 per cent over this period, reversing some of the market share gains it made in the last few years. Hard liquor's share rose to 84 per cent in 2016 from 71 per cent in 2014, after a series of tax increases for beer. The market share for beer fell to 14 per cent from 27 per cent over the same period,” it said.

Beer makers will also be helped by the removal of a tax on beer ...More info on site

Portuguese beverage company Unicer has changed its name to Super Bock Group (SBG), ESM reported on November 13.

This change of the corporate identity incorporates the name of its most famous brand, Super Bock beer, which is celebrating 90 years of production this year.

The company is the market leader in Portugal and is present in over 50 countries, while the annual beer production surpasses 300 million litres.

China has become the company's main foreign market, accounting for 40% of SBG’s exports – i.e. 12% of global revenue (€451 million in 2016). Exports will account for 30% of turnover in 2017. Over the past two years, the company has seen its Angolan market slip back however.

The biggest shareholder in the company is Portugal’s Grupo Viacer (consisting of Violas, Arsopi and BPI), which holds 56%, while the remaining 44% is owned by the Carlsberg Group.

Brewery news Tanzania: Foreign investors snap up Tanzania Breweries shares
Foreign investors snapped up Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) shares last week to send the weekly turnover at the Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) to a record performance over five years, AllAfrica reported on November 13.

The beer maker transacted a total of 6,292,603 shares to contribute a cool Sh84.95 billion, almost equivalent to last week's Sh85.8 billion turnover.

The Sh85.8 billion-turnover was a rise from only Sh2.99 billion that was registered during the week ending November 3, 2017.

Last week's trading activities started slowly, with the maker of Kilimanjaro Premium Lager and Safari Lager transacting only 223 shares at a weighted average price of Sh13,200/share.

The situation was not very different on November 7 and on November 8 when the beer maker transacted only 2,153 and 200 shares respectively. However, the trend changed abruptly on November 9 when TBL moved a total of 5,898,570 shares on pre-arranged basis and some 9,066 more on normal basis at a weighted average price of Sh13,500/share to contribute a staggering Sh79.753 billion to the day's turnover.

Though stock market experts and authorities appeared coy to state who bought and sold the shares on November 9, The Citizen understands that they were sold in South Africa by employees' trust ...More info on site

Brewery news Colombia: Leading brewer Bavaria lowers price of Aguila beer
Colombia’s leading brewer Bavaria has decided to lower price of one of its best-selling beers, Águila. The price per unit will go down to 1,500 COP per bottle, the same as during the Brazil World Cup of 2014, The Bogota Post reported on November 14.

The decision came after Colombia classified to the World Cup 2018 to be held in Russia. Following Colombia’s victory over Peru with a goal by James Rodriguez, Bavaria came forward with the announcement.

Alejandro Molina, brand director for Águila, explained in El Tiempo “We’ve noticed the bets and the buzz around the World Cup, and all the joy this victory has brought—how could we not join the party? We’d like Colombians to celebrate with domestic beer. That’s why we’ve lowered the price of Águila beer.”

While small, the 200-peso reduction has been received well by Colombians. Beer is the preferred alcoholic beverage in the country, after all.

However, it is less affordable than expected in a nation with a US $250 minimum wage. Average price of a domestic beer at a supermarket rivals that of Barcelona or Berlin; the same beer at a bar will cost you anywhere from two to six times the suggested price.

Águila is produced by ...More info on site

Brewery news Hong Kong: Hite Jinro expecting near sevenfold sales increase in Hong Kong this year
Hite Jinro expects its beer sales in Hong Kong to see a near sevenfold increase this year compared to 2012, according to a company press-release published on November 14.

Last year, Hite Jinro sold 320,000 boxes of beer, a 31 percent on-year increase. This year, that number is expected to rise to 410,000 boxes, almost seven times more than the 60,000 boxes sold in 2012, when Hite Jinro entered the Hong Kong market with stout beer. One box contains 20 500-milliliter bottles.

Hite Jinro currently sells various brands in Hong Kong including Dry D, Max and Hite. In September, it began exporting Filite, a low-alcohol beverage that became a hit in Korea for its low prices. However, Filite is priced similar to other beers in Hong Kong, staking its competitiveness on quality rather than pricing.

Brewery news South Africa: Kabinet Brewery pushing to capture South Africa’s craft beer lovers
The search for new beers in South Africa has taken to new levels. Analysts are saying that the country is in the throes of a craft beer revolution with independent brewers opening up, almost on a weekly basis, DeathRattleSports.com reported on November 12.

Serbia might not evoke ready memories for most Africans but the taste of Serbian beer made a lasting impression for the Brawlers that came for a round of golf at the Houghton Golf Estate last month.

Businesswoman Linda Khoza’s Kabinet Brewery makes no bones about the push to capture a slice of the local beer industry. Khoza says it is open season in the industry, and those who win will be judged, not on mass production, but on the quality of the brew.

“We consider ourselves to be passionate gourmets. We are searching for new and unusual tastes, while aiming to offer the highest quality craft beers from selected ingredients. We have created the Kabinet Brewery in South Africa, and it’s all about curiosities in the market,” Khoza says.

Kabinet is the brainchild of Serbian Branimir Melentijevic, whose passion for golden liquids inspired him to build a brewery in 2015.

The brand has not looked back since then, and is ...More info on site
