Scientific Digest

Most brewers have seen the after fermentation of dry hopped beers in the presence of yeast. This phenomenon is not well understood but documented in old British literature; the last reference goes back to 1941 where maltase activity was evidenced in dry hopped casked ales. These U.S. researchers discovered that the production of fermentable sugars, glucose and maltose in dry hopped beer in the presence of yeast correlates with increased temperature and dry hop exposure time. Enzyme activities were found for amyloglucosidase and alpha and beta amylases. Despite the low enzyme activites, significant changes in residual extract, ABV and CO2 production can occur in dry hopped beers. How should we be surprised? Everybody likes sweet stuff!

Brewery news USA, WI: The G5 Brewing Company moving forward with construction
A plan to bring a brewery to the Gateway Business District in Beloit is moving forward with construction.

The G5 Brewing Company, 1895 Gateway Boulevard, is set to open in July, according to owner Lee Gunderson, the Beloit Daily News reported on November 22.

Work at the site by Rockford Structures Construction began on Halloween. Work on the grounds, including building the driveway to the future brewery, is still in progress.

Work on a rock wall along the driveway and a rock barrier will get completed before any foundation work for the future brewery, Gunderson said.

Gunderson recently met with Rockford Structures Construction crews to go over the construction timeline.

"We've been looking forward to construction," Gunderson added. "It's been in the planning stages for the last two-and-a-half years."

A zoning map amendment for the brewery was approved in February and the Beloit City Council approved an amendment to allow outdoor seating at the establishment.

The brewery will include a restaurant, outdoor seating and a patio area.

A menu for the restaurant is currently being drafted, and more information will be available closer to the opening date, according to the website.

In terms of brewing, the business could start with a 10-barrel brewing system, or a system capable of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Scofflaw Brewing Company’s new Atlanta brewpub scheduled to be installed by March 2018
Plans are in place for a third expansion at Scofflaw Brewing Company, the Georgia brewery growing at a rapid pace and known for its IPAs and barrel-aged stouts, Brewbound reported on November 23.

The brewery has a new 50-barrel, four-vessel brewhouse under construction at BrewFab, scheduled to be installed by Mar. 1 at the current brewing facility in the Bolton neighborhood of Atlanta on the city’s Westside.

Eight additional 100-barrel fermentation tanks plus new bright tanks will also be installed, starting in November. The third expansion in the first 18 months of operation will double the brewery’s current capacity to 30,000 barrels per year.

“We came up against capacity constraints when we opened with 6,500 barrels and at 12,000 barrels and again at 16,000 barrels,” said co-founder Matt Shirah. “Each time we’ve added fermentation tanks, we’ve ended up at maximum capacity. We needed to replace the current 20-barrel brewhouse and do a build-out to give us the capacity we need going forward.”

Demand for kegs continues to drive the growth for Scofflaw, which is distributed solely in Georgia. Shirah anticipates much of the new capacity will be needed to satisfy the keg demand from restaurants, gastropubs, beer bars, tap rooms and growler shops. “We ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Perfect Plain Brewing Co kicks of operations in Pensacola
Just in time for the biggest drinking day of the year — the eve of Thanksgiving when college students return home and reunite over pints with high school friends — the newest brewery in downtown Pensacola, Perfect Plain Brewing Co., officially kicked off operations on Tuesday, November 21 with a range of craft selections on tap, the Pensacola News Journal reported.

"We want this to be a community hub that our community is proud of," said D.C. Reeves, co-founder and co-owner of Perfect Plain Brewing Co.

Hours before the brewery opened its doors at 50 E. Garden St., Reeves and other employees set about tidying up the final aspects of the venue's 5,400-square-foot interior, an open setting designed in an urban industrial approach.

"For all of this time, there have been people who have come to Pensacola and bragged about other breweries," he continued. "We want to flip that. We want people in other places to brag about our brewery."

Perfect Plain Brewing Co. started its opening day with six styles of beer on tap, which included multiple IPAs and saisons. By the end of the week, Reeves said it should offer a total of eight types of beer. After it settles into its ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Fourth Creek Brewing Co. aiming at spring opening in Statesville
Beer drinkers will have to wait at least until spring to tap into Statesville’s first brewery since the 1930s, the Statesville Record & Landmark reported on November 22.

Jonathan Nobinger, who planned to open Fourth Creek Brewing Co. in downtown Statesville by the end of the year, said last week it will be several months before the brewery can be up and running.

“The saying is ‘twice as long, twice as much,’ and I thought I had factored (for) that and doubled that number, but it’s been double of the double,” Nobinger said of the startup timeframe.

The long, narrow 3,100 square-foot building at 226 W. Broad St. will house a system capable of brewing 75 gallons of beer at a time, said Nobinger. He added that he was ordering the equipment last week, and that it would take a couple months to install in the now-vacant building.

In the meantime, Nobinger said he’ll be able to work on building out the space.

“We’ve done some of that now, but we’re waiting on the money,” he said. “Then we can begin the inspections and permitting. The city has been great. They’ve been so helpful, but it’s just become one of those ‘hurry up and wait’ ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KY: Flywheel Brewing now open as Elizabethtown’s first microbrewery
Elizabethtown and Hardin County's first microbrewery is now open to the public, WAVE 3 reported on November 22.

Flywheel Brewing is a four-barrel brewhouse and taproom where craft beers are made and sold on site. This is the first brewery in Elizabethtown since prohibition, or possibly even longer.

The owners say their goal is to offer good beer in a relaxing space.

Outside of Louisville, no other microbreweries are in operation within a 60-mile radius. Flywheel Brewing is located on 218 S. Mulberry St. Suite 103, in downtown Elizabethtown.

Brewery news USA, WI: Brenner Brewing Company to close its doors this week-end
Milwaukee is in the midst of a craft brewery boom. Brenner Brewing Company was one of the first microbrewies to help get the ball rolling. Sadly, Brenner Brewing is now the first in the well-populated guild of Milwaukee breweries to close its doors, the Milwaukee Record reported on November 20.

Owner and Master Brewer Mike Brenner announced on his personal Facebook account on November 20 that he’s closing the brewery and tasting room. He says this weekend will be Brenner Brewing’s last.

From Brenner’s status:

“While I will still be brewing and selling Brenner Beer (as a gypsy brewer at other people’s breweries), I am being forced to close the brewery and tasting room after this weekend. Come down and celebrate me not ever having to scrub puke out of subway tile again (professionally at least), and try out some of the incredible sour beers we’ve bottled the past few weeks. Hours are Wed 4-10, Fri 4-11, Sa 11-11 & Su 11 until after the last Packer Potluck.”

Brenner Brewing Company opened at 706 S. 5th Street in 2014. The brewery was known for its lighthearted tours, beers with names like Butterfly Farts and Bacon Bomb, labels produced by area artists, and an ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Lompoc Brewing closing Hedge House location
After 14 years, Lompoc Hedge House will pour its final microbrew on November 28, at 3412 SE Division St., according to a press release. Lompoc Brewing has been mixing malts and hops in Portland since 1996, and its other locations — Fifth Quadrant, Sidebar, Lompoc Tavern, and Oaks Bottom Public House — will all remain sudsing, Eater Portland reported on November 20.

Lompoc Hedge House is the latest in a spate of Portland brewery and brewpub closings, including The Commons, Amnesia Brewing, and the Widmer Brothers brewpub (and after less than one year of business, Ross Island Brewing is up for sale).

In the farewell note to Hedge House, Lompoc owner Jerry Fechter says increased competition from restaurants, bars, and pubs on Southeast Division led to the closure.

“The competition is greater and frankly, business is slow,” writes Fechter. “We’ve seen decreasing sales for the last two years.“

In Portland brewing history, Lompoc Hedge House standouts as one of the beer bars co-founded by local beer legend, Don Younger. Younger played a pivotal role in Portland’s development as a beer destination when he operated Horse Brass Pub.

And on New School Beer, Portland beer whisperer Ezra Johnson-Greenough writes, “Hedge House was perhaps Lompoc’s best property, ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Beer industry forum warns against further tax hikes
Taxes on alcohol and soft drinks should not be hiked again in the next few years since successive hikes in special consumption tax have had a strong impact on the market, a round table organised by the Viet Nam Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Association heard in HCM City on November 22.

Since 2013 the special consumption tax on alcoholic beverages and beer has been raised four times.

From next year it will be 65 per cent.

Speaking to Viet Nam News on the sidelines of the forum, Nguyen Van Viet, the association chairman, said the growth of the beverages market in the first eight months of this year was 7 per cent, the same level as previous years.

“The growth was mainly due to soft drinks, which have not been affected by the tax. Alcoholic drinks saw no growth while beer witnessed low and steady growth.”

The impact of the tax hikes would be clearer a year or two down the line and so the growth next year would not be higher than in 2017, he said.

Experts cited the example of Japan, which takes around 10 years to bring in a new policy, saying Viet Nam too should be consistency in policy making.

The tax on ...More info on site

Brewery news China: Asahi Group to begin distributing Pilsner Urquell and Peroni beer in China
Asahi Group Holdings will begin distributing two European beer labels under its umbrella in China by next spring as the Japanese group seeks a bigger gulp of the world's biggest market for the drink, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on November 22.

Asahi will market Czech beer brand Pilsner Urquell and Italy's Peroni mostly in Shanghai and other mainland metropolises, targeting younger drinkers who frequent upscale supermarkets and restaurant. Pricing has not been set, but Pilsner Urquell and Peroni are expected to be more expensive than Asahi's Japanese top-seller Super Dry lager, which already costs about three times as much in China as local brands.

Asahi acquired the two brands earlier this year from Anheuser-Busch InBev as part of an asset buyout in five European countries. Global industry leader AB InBev needed to divest a portion of its portfolio to secure its mega-merger with SABMiller.

Although Pilsner Urquell and Peroni are well known in Europe, they are hard to find in China. But China's thirst for premium beer is growing, even as the overall mainland beer market has shrunk from its 2013 peak. Premium beers - a price range that includes Super Dry - are forecast to hold a 13% market share in ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam & Israel: Vietnam’s Saigon beer to be imported in Israel
The first Asian food fair in Israel’s Tel Aviv in mid-November impressed the Israeli people, especially the Saigon beer from Viet Nam, the Viet Nam News reported on November 22.

This is the first time Saigon beer was introduced in Israel. The fair is a place to promote food and beverage products from Asian countries such as India, Thailand, Japan and South Korea, as well as Tibet (China) and Viet Nam.

The beer was introduced and promoted through Diplomat, one of the leading import and export companies of Israel having a system of super-wide and large restaurants in Israel.

Speaking at the event, General Director of Diplomat, Roni Bornstein, said he was impressed with the products of Viet Nam at the fair. Diplomat decided to import the Vietnamese beer to the Israeli market because it’s one of the most famous products in terms of high-quality and design.

He said his company took over two years to persuade Israeli authorities to import this beer to Israel due to barriers such as quality and food safety. Now, the entire brand on beer bottles is printed in Hebrew and maintains the Kosher standards of the Jewish people.

Bornstein said that many Israeli people had known about Viet Nam ...More info on site
