ABSTRACT
Finding an easy analysis to identify a hop variety or even
the growing region has proven to be challenging up to now.
A U.S. research team is currently developing a GCSulfur-
Chemiluminescence method in combination with a
Gertl Twister(TM) for sample preparation to determine the hop
variety and also the growing region. After establishing a data
library, the variety matching was proven to work. For the
regional matching, the proof of concept is viable but further
work needs to be carried out.

Kenya: Construction of Kisumu Brewery progressing on schedule
|
Construction plans for the Kshs15 billion Kisumu Brewery the ground-breaking of which was presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta in August are progressing on schedule with production set to commence next year, the Capital FM Kenya reported on November 27.
Kenya Breweries Limited Managing Director Jane Karuku said the new plant will provide an expanded market opportunity mainly for sorghum farmers in Nyanza. The plant, she said, will be heavily reliant on sorghum among other raw materials sourced from locals.
During current development phase, Kisumu County has enjoyed construction material and labour force supply benefits as part of the company’s local sourcing commitments. To spur the local economy, the construction material and majority of the labour force at the construction site are exclusively sourced from Kisumu County.
“We have made a lot of progress at the new brewery site since July and we are delighted at the progress. We look forward to completing the construction works on schedule,” said Ms. Karuku.
In July, President Kenyatta and Diageo Global Chief Executive Ivan Menezes commissioned the development of an ultra-modern brewery in Kisumu.

Canada: Molson Coors confirms intention to build its new brewery in Longueil, Quebec
|
Molson Coors wants to build its new brewery in Longueuil, the company announced on November 28.
The City of Longueuil must approve the agreement, but the site, which is near the Saint-Hubert airport, has been in the company's crosshairs for more than two years.
If all goes according to plan, crews will break ground on the facility next year and the brewery will be up and running by 2021. The company previously said the project could cost "hundreds of millions of dollars."
"Today's decision to move forward will enable us to stay competitive in an evolving market, we are ready to move forward with this vision," Frederic Landtmeters, president and chief executive officer of Molson Coors Canada, said in a statement.
In July, the company announced it would be building a new brewery instead of modernizing its current building, which is not far from the St. Lawrence River on Notre-Dame Street in Montreal.
It has been brewing beer there for the last 231 years.
The new site is about 10 kilometres away from the brewery's current site. The size of the land, proximity to Highways 20 and 30, and a regulation that allows for tax breaks over five years to develop the area near the airport

Spain & USA: Spanish Mahou San Miguel acquires minority stake in US craft brewer Avery Brewing

Avery Brewing, which has been one of Colorado's most unconventional beer makers for the past 25 years, has sold a minority stake of its business to Spanish brewing conglomerate Mahou San Miguel. The billion-dollar company also owns a 30 percent stake in Michigan's Founders Brewing, which it bought into in 2014, Westword reported on November 28.
"At this time, we cannot disclose the financial details of the agreement, but I want to reiterate that it is a minority investment, and Adam Avery and Larry Avery will still continue to lead our brewery," brewery spokeswoman Vanessa Cory said in a statement, adding that Mahou San Miguel is also a family-owned company.
The deal isn't a surprise. Avery spent $30 million on a state-of-the-art brewing campus and restaurant, which it opened in 2015, just as sales for many medium-sized and large breweries began to slip in the face of increasing competition. Avery has also streamlined its portfolio over the past two years, jettisoning many of the unusual seasonal releases it had used to build its reputation in favor of more marketable year-round offerings.

UK: London’s Brixton Brewery partners with Heineken UK
|
London’s Brixton Brewery has partnered with Heineken UK in a move that will see it increase capacity almost tenfold. Heineken will acquire an undisclosed minority stake in the business for an undisclosed sum. Following the investment, Brixton will move from its existing 3,500-hl (3,000-BBL) site on Brixton Station Road to a new 15,000-square-foot space on Milkwood Road, less than a half mile away, Good Beer Hunting reported on November 28.
Local couples Jez and Libby Galaun and Mike Ross and Xochitl Benjamin founded the brewery in Brixton, South London, in 2013. The new site, which is expected to be operational by April 2018, is expected to produce approximately 30,000 hl (21,300 BBLs) of beer annually.
As reported recently by GBH, London’s brewing industry is continuing to experience a strong growth curve. This has made it an increasingly tempting market for the industry's biggest players. Recently SABMiller and, subsequently, Asahi acquired Meantime Brewing. ZX Ventures, the venture capital arm of AB InBev, purchased Camden Town Brewery in December 2015. And earlier this year, Carlsberg, in partnership with Brooklyn Brewery, acquired London Fields Brewery in a deal reportedly worth £4 million ($5.3 mln).

Australia & China: Australian beer maker Broo signs China distribution deal
|
Shares in Aussie beer maker Broo have soared to their highest in a year on the back of a Chinese distribution deal, The Sydney Morning Herald reported on November 27.
Broo shares jumped more than 30 per cent on November 27 after the Victorian brewer said Jihua had agreed to pay for 1.5 billion litres of Broo Premium Lager over the next seven years.
Broo forecasts A$120 million in revenue from the deal but won't start to receive the cash until 2020.
Nonetheless, its shares were up 30.5 per cent at 38.5 cents by 1410 AEDT.
With Jihua set to market and distribute to supermarkets, retail chains and the hospitality industry, Broo founder and chief executive Kent Grogan said his beer was set to become a major brand in China over the coming years.
"I am delighted to have reached agreement with such a high-calibre Chinese distribution partner," Mr Grogan said.
Broo's Mildura brewery has been operating at full capacity since early October.
The brewery will focus on production of kegs and bottle products of Broo Premium Lager, Australia Draught, Kakadu and Mildura Brewery brands.
