HOPS - MIGHT AS WELL TELL ME YOUR NAME, AS I WILL FIND IT OUT ANYWAY!

ABSTRACT
Finding an easy analysis to identify a hop variety or even the growing region has proven to be challenging up to now. A U.S. research team is currently developing a GCSulfur- Chemiluminescence method in combination with a Gertl Twister(TM) for sample preparation to determine the hop variety and also the growing region. After establishing a data library, the variety matching was proven to work. For the regional matching, the proof of concept is viable but further work needs to be carried out.

Malt news USA: Proximity Malt nearing completion of construction of its Delaware malting plant
Specialty malted grain producer Proximity Malt LLC is nearing completion of construction on its new Laurel, Delaware processing plant, several local news organizations reported this week. The company said it hopes to make its first shipment of product manufactured at the site by Christmas, the Powder Bulk Solids reported on November 30.

Serving end users in the beer brewing industry, the Laurel plant has a planned capacity of 25,000 tonnes/yr of malts produced from wheat, barley, and other grains, according to a December 2015 company press release announcing the project. The company said it intends to hire 20 full-time staff at the plant.

“We really liked the site,” Amy Germershausen of Proximity’s sales and marketing department told the Seaford Morning Star this August. “It had an existing grain elevator which wasn’t the prettiest, [as] it had been abandoned for several years, but the concrete silos were sound, and it’s perfect for the various product segmentation that we want to do with malt, with our finished product.”

Proximity’s reasoning for selecting the Laurel location was its proximity to the area’s grain growers. The firm is also building another malt processing plant in Monte Vista, CO. Both sites will contain pilot malting and roasting labs ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Boston Beer’s exotic Utopias beers not helping the company out of its predicament
Boston Beer founder and Chairman Jim Koch is both one of the brewer's greatest assets and also one of its biggest liabilities. His love of craft beer is evident in his willingness to use the best, sometimes most expensive ingredients to create great-tasting beverages, but his inability to stay focused seemingly keeps Boston Beer from being able to turn its business around, The Motley Fool reported on November 25.

The introduction of the 10th edition of Samuel Adams Utopias is a case in point. A high-end beer that's only brewed every other year, it challenges the notion of what a beer can become. It's more like a fine liqueur, and at $200 a bottle is not something everyone can afford. Or get their hands on. Only 13,000 bottles of Utopias are expected to hit the shelves 2017, and they typically sell out right away.

One of the more notable features of the Utopias is their alcohol content, which clocks in at 28% by volume and makes it illegal in about a dozen or more states. To put that into context, Anheuser-Busch InBev's Budweiser is 5% ABV, the same as Samuel Adams Boston Lager, while wine can run around 11% ABV. Mead can ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Cousins Revolution Ale Works to bring craft beer enthusiasts another option in the mid-Hudson Valley
It all started with two cousins and a passion for craft beer.

"We really wanted to get into something we both loved, so we started Cousins Revolution Ale Works," Aaron Browne, head brewer and co-owner, said in an interview to the Poughkeepsie Journal on November 27.

Cousins Revolution Ale Works will bring craft beer enthusiasts another option in the mid-Hudson Valley, highlighting stouts and other dark beers while reveling in the history of the American Revolution. The craft brewery is tentatively scheduled to open in late-January at 1582 Route 9 in Wappingers Falls.

The opening will mean another option for craft beer drinkers in a state with a rich selection of quality craft brewers. New York ranks fourth in craft breweries with 269 total in 2016, according to the Brewers Association.

New York's brewing industry also carries a hefty economic impact, with a $2.9 billion impact in 2014, per the Brewers Association.

Before co-owner Aaron Dorn got involved, it was a simple homebrewing operation called Browne's Revolution Ale Works.

"I got into it thanks to a (homebrewing) kit I got as a Christmas gift," Browne said. "I've been brewing beer ever since."

Dorn teamed up with Browne about a year ago, and the duo renamed it to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Odd Breed Wild Ales launches as Florida’s first brewery dedicated to American wild ales
Florida's first brewery dedicated to American wild ales is now open in Pompano Beach, the Miami New Times reported on November 29.

The day after Thanksgiving, Odd Breed Wild Ales owners and brewers Matt Manthe and Dan Naumko debuted their tasting room. The intimate space is located in the city's industrial-like Old Town Pompano area.

Odd Breed Wild Ales is South Florida's first brewing operation dedicated to producing barrel-aged wild ales.

It is also South Florida's first brewery to offer customers access to an online store designed to create patron profiles and allow anyone of legal drinking age to purchase specialty release bottles. Customers will be able to visit the Odd Breed website the day of a release to place orders available for pickup.

These American wild ales, often dubbed "sours" for their unique tartness, are best defined by layers of unexpected, complex flavors, Manthe says.

The sour notes are the product of lactic, acetic, and other organic acids naturally produced during fermentation using yeast and bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Pediococcus, and Brettanomyces (or Brett). Like Odd Breed, many wild ale brewers also re-ferment with fruit to add layers of flavor and complexity to the beer.

"I'd describe our beers as soft yet complex, with tropical, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Good Word Brewing and Public House opens its doors in Duluth
A long-awaited brew pub from the owners of Decatur-based Brick Store Pub opened this week in Duluth’s Parsons Alley dining and entertainment district, Gwinnettdailypost.com reported on November 30.

Good Word Brewing and Public House, located next to Dreamland BBQ, opened its doors on November 28. The restaurant had been teasing on Facebook that it was close to opening for weeks, but announced on the social media site late Monday night that it would open at 5 p.m. Tuesday, November 28.

“It was great,” Good Word owner and brewer Todd DiMatteo said. “We had a blast. A lot of friends from Decatur and a lot of new friends from Duluth (were there), so it was a lot of fun.”

DiMatteo said Good Word will be “completely different” from Brick Store Pub because, whereas the Decatur business is a beer bar, the Duluth restaurant will be a brew pub where the beer is made in-house. The menu at Good Word is also different from the one at Brick Store Pub, he said.

The few common threads, DiMatteo said, are that he is involved in both Good Word and Brick Store Pub, and that both locations deal with beer.

There are a handful of beers brewed at the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Cinderlands Beer Co. to open officially on December 2
Cinderlands Beer Co., which opens in Lawrenceville on December 2, is named as a playful nod to Pittsburgh’s smoky-city past, but it aims to give customers the best kind of up-to-date brewpub experience, the Pittsburg Post-Gazette reported on November 30.

Unlike many area breweries that have opened kitchenless taprooms in the past year or so, Cinderlands is not only brewing its own beer, but also serving its own food, made in what’s now a really open kitchen. Customers can sit on stools that look to be an extension of the tile-backed bar and watch the cooking staff finish their dishes, many of which will be made with different forms of the house beer.

That’s the niche of this place, which formerly and briefly was Roasted Barrelhouse & Eatery and, before that, Eclipse Lounge.

Owner (with his brother Steve) Jamie Warden says, “We make our own food, we make our own beer and we find unique ways for them to work together.”

For instance, chef Joe Kiefer (formerly of Meat & Potatoes) and his sous, Hunter McCarthy (formerly of täko) this past week fine-tuned their take on chicharrones — pork rinds, but made not with pork but with spent grains from the brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA: Halfway Crooks Brewing and Blending coming to Atlanta’s Summerhill neighborhood
The Summerhill neighborhood in Atlanta is getting a new brewery, the Atlanta Journal reported on November 29.

Halfway Crooks Brewing and Blending is set to open next summer in the Georgia Avenue development, the Good Beer Hunting blog reports. The mixed-use development is currently under construction near Georgia State Stadium, formerly Turner Field.

Halfway Crooks will likely be the first “own premise” brewery in the state, meaning that a majority of the company’s revenue will come from sales at the brewery itself. Prior to recent changes in Georgia’s beer laws, breweries were required to sell their product only through highly-regulated distributors.

Founded by Joran Van Ginderachter, the former brewmaster of Three Taverns Brewery in Decatur, local homebrewer and engineer Shawn Bainbridge and partner Tim Kilic, Halfway Crooks’ vision includes limited production of esoteric beers including unfiltered lagers, mixed fermentation and saisons that they control throughout the entire brewing process, from raw ingredients to storage to the glass.

Halfway Crooks plans to open in May or June of 2018 and will feature a 10-barrel draft beer system and a rooftop patio. Local architecture firm Square Feet Studio will design the space, and a limited menu of locally-sourced meats and cheeses will be available. While the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MI: Founders Brewing Company to launch Detroit brewpub on December 4
Founders Brewing Company’s hotly anticipated Detroit brewpub is set to flood the Motor City with beer beginning next week. The company announced in a release on November 28 that it will open the doors of its Detroit taproom at 3 p.m. on December 4 at 456 Charlotte St.

The Cass Corridor taproom is located inside a 14,000-square-foot building formerly occupied by the Cass Corridor Food Co-op. It’s stationed just a few blocks from The Peterboro and the Masonic Temple. Founders’ Detroit outpost is expected to feature more than a dozen taps, a kitchen, a patio, and a small brewhouse that will produce beers specific to the Detroit location.

In concert with the opening, the brewery is also doing a special Founders Brewing Co. CBS bottle release. Tickets will go on sale online for $50 each on December 2 at 11 a.m. The purchase includes two bottles of CBS, which must be picked up on particular times and dates.

This is the second location for Founders Brewing Company. The renowned brewery is based out of Grand Rapids.

Founders Brewing Company is located at 456 Charlotte St.; the brewery will open daily starting December 5 from 11 a.m. to midnight Sunday through Wednesday and 11 ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Alpha Brewing to reopen in larger facility
Craft brewer Alpha Brewing will close its downtown St. Louis brewery next month and reopen in a larger building in the city’s Tower Grove South neighbourhood, STLtoday.com reported on November 28.

Alpha’s new taproom, restaurant and beer garden with seating for about 300 people will open at 4310 Fyler Avenue in mid-February, the brewer said.

A 10,000-square-foot building next door will house Alpha’s production facility. Alpha acquired the property this year.

Alpha’s downtown brewery, in leased space at 1409 Washington Avenue, opened in 2013. The brewery makes about 200 barrels a year in a 2.5-barrel system.

“The downtown location is going to be closing at the end of the year,” Derrick Langeneckert, Alpha’s owner and head brewer, said.

“I love downtown and wish we could stay,” he said, adding he’s hopeful to someday open a satellite location downtown.

Alpha is spending more than $2 million on the new facility. With the extra space, Alpha will have the capacity to produce 3,000 barrels annually, and Langeneckert said his goal is to make 1,000 barrels in the Fyler building’s first year.

“We love the space and the Tower Grove South neighborhood,” Langeneckert said, adding the availability of parking and the ability to have a kitchen drew him to the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Collar City Brewing converting former church into brew pub
Collar City Brewing is beginning work to convert the former Mount Ida Community Baptist Church building at 560 Congress St. in Troy into a brew pub. Louis Emory, one of five partners in the $1 million project, said the team is hoping for an opening in May, the Albany Times Union reported on November 27.

Bill Newman, forefather of today’s Capital Region brewing scene, is working with Collar City Brewing as a consultant and will be aboard at least until an opening brewmaster is hired. Emory says his brother Rob Emory will apprentice with the brewmaster and expects to take over brewing operations.

The brew pub will seat about 100 in the church’s former sanctuary, with a private-event space downstairs to accommodate another 100 or so. Emory says the business will have two kitchens, one dedicated to preparing food for those with allergies or sensitivities to dairy and/or gluten or other dietary restrictions. A head chef has not yet been hired.

Collar City’s seven-barrel brewing system is being designed and built by Portland Kettle Works, a company chosen in part because it uses American steel, Emory says.

Brewery news USA, CO: Odell Brewing Co. postpones opening of Denver brewhouse till next year
Odell Brewing Co.’s plans to open a Denver taproom before the end of the year have come up against a formidable foe: construction delays, the Denverite reported on November 29.

The Fort Collins-based craft brewer is working on a taproom and 10-barrel pilot brewhouse at 2945 Larimer St. The facility in the River North section of Five Points should be open during the first few months of 2018, said Alex Kayne, spokesman for Odell.

Odell is redeveloping and building near a 100-year-old factory in RiNo. The maker of 90 Shilling and Cutthroat Porter announced earlier this year that it expected to hold a grand opening for the site in late 2017.

“We are still planning to open, but it won’t be in this calendar year,” Kayne said.

Odell got its start in 1989 — early in the life of Colorado’s craft beer scene. Today, the brewery is the third largest craft beer maker in Colorado and the 27th largest in the nation, according to the Brewers Association.

A Shake Shack location is expected to open next year north of Odell’s Denver taproom. Across the street, The Block Distilling Co. has set its opening for Dec. 16. And New Belgium Brewing Co. is expected to soon ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TX: Audacity Brew House closes its doors in Denton
On Nov. 11, Denton’s first microbrewery saw its last sunset, the North Texas Daily reported on November 28.

Audacity Brew House opened its doors in October 2014, introducing Denton to locally brewed craft beers. Owned by brew-master Doug Smith, Audacity also hosted events such as an open mic night and Karma Yoga days.

Tucked away on Shady Oaks Drive, the local brews stopped being produced two weeks ago due to a clash of investors.

The taproom wasn’t making as much money as they thought and hoped they would, taproom bartender and brewer Adam Briggs said.

“It’s not like they didn’t like each other, but it’s just basically disagreements, and not enough money was going through the taproom,” Briggs said. “Initially it was supposed to be supported solely by the taproom.”

After the last batch was brewed, Ben E. Keith, a foodservice distributor, stopped distributing the beer to all the local businesses who sold it.

The seven main beers, four seasonal beers and three “Abbey Series” beers could be bought at local restaurants, corner markets and grocery stores.

At the UNT homecoming game on Saturday, Nov. 11, Thadera Salazar sold the last two cans of Audacity’s Bulletproof Texas Pale Ale at Apogee Stadium.

Salazar said Audacity was one of ...More info on site

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia posts dip in net profit despite stronger revenue in Q3 2017
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd posted a slight dip in net profit in its third quarter of the financial year 2017 despite stronger revenue, as earnings were dragged by trade offer adjustments in Singapore, The Edge Markets reported on November 30.

Net profit slid 2% year-on-year to RM42.85 million in the three months ended Sept 30, 2017 (3QFY17), from RM43.61 million, its income statement filed to Bursa Malaysia on November 30 showed. It said the adjustments in Singapore relate to provisions for trade offers of RM18.2 million, of which RM14.2 million relates to prior years.

After excluding trade offer adjustments by its subsidiary Carlsberg Singapore Pte Ltd (CSPL), the group's organic net profit grew 19.8% to RM54.7 million, driven by strong performance in Malaysia operations, it said in a separate statement.

Revenue grew 8% to RM423.51 million from RM393.31 million, as sales at its Malaysian operations grew 18%, driven by stronger demand for the group's flagship brands, Carlsberg Green Label and Carlsberg Smooth Draught.

"Premium brands like Kronenbourg 1664 Blanc, Somersby Cider and Connor's Stout Porter continued to deliver double-digit growth in sales. Profit from operations increased by RM16.7 million or 47.9% in this quarter arising from better product mix as well as effective cost ...More info on site

Malt news World: More brewers start experimenting with malt rather than hops
Heavily-hopped beers may be on the way out as farmers continue to raise the cost of their crops, according to Sharp’s beer sommelier Ed Hughes.

“The beer industry has been too hop-centric for several years,” Hughes told the Drinks Business.

“What we’re starting to see now is more brewers experimenting with traditional flavourings like malted barley.”

Hops have dominated the craft brewing for nearly a decade, but a combination of high demand and new agricultural advances could mean that the crop’s reign is coming to an end.

A new study published this week has found even more notable differences in the taste of beers malted from barley varieties than previously thought.

The researchers, led by Oregon State University, said the findings are an important first step toward a potential new market for beer connoisseurs.

Pat Hayes, one of the experts leading the study, told Eurekalert: “We started this project with a question: Are there novel flavours in barley that carry through malting and brewing and into beer? This is a revolutionary idea in the brewing world. We found that the answer is yes.”

“These positive beer flavour attributes provide new opportunities for brewers and expanded horizons for consumers.”

Brewery news Australia: AB InBev buys Australian craft brewer Pirate Life
The world's biggest beer company, Anheuser-Busch InBev, has continued its acquisition spree of smaller craft brewers in Australia, this time snapping up the Pirate Life operations in Adelaide, The Financial Review reported on November 30.

It comes just two months after AB InBev bought Sydney craft beer company 4 Pines, as the global giant accelerates in a craft beer sector that is growing much faster than the stagnant mainstream beer industry.

AB InBev already owns the Carlton & United Breweries business in Australia that makes Victoria Bitter and Carlton Draught.

AB InBev's president of Asia Pacific South, Jan Craps, said on November 30 that the company would also inject A$10 million into Pirate Life for a new brewery for the brand because it had outgrown its facilities in the inner western suburb of Hindmarsh in Adelaide.

"With its focus on canned packaging that gives consumers fresh, well-crafted beers and consistent quality, Pirate Life has resonated with Australian beer drinkers who want something different," Mr Craps said.

The purchase price was undisclosed. Pirate Life produces about 3 million litres of beer annually, and when the new brewery is up and running that will accelerate to about 8 million litres.

Pirate Life was founded in 2014 by Jack ...More info on site

Brewery news Japan: Kirin Brewery to raise prices of some of its beers and other products
Kirin Brewery Co. said on November 28 that it will raise the prices of some of its food service-use beer and quasi-beer, and liquor products, starting with shipments on April 1, 2018, The Japan News reported.

The price hike, the first in some 10 years for the Kirin Holdings Co. unit, reflects rising distribution costs and a liquor tax law revision. The amended law, which took effect in June, prohibits sales of alcoholic beverages at excessively low prices.

The hike will affect some of Kirin’s barreled and bottled beer, “happoshu” low-malt quasi-beer and so-called third-segment beer-like drinks, and liquor-based beverages for restaurants.

Prices of bottled beer products for liquor shops will also be raised. Retail prices of large bottled beer are expected to rise by some 10 percent.

Meanwhile, Kirin will keep the prices of its canned products unchanged.

Among rivals, Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Suntory Holdings Ltd. earlier announced their plans to conduct price hikes next spring.
