HOW ABOUT PRODUCING A DRY HOPPED ALCOHOL FREE BEER?

ABSTRACT
Alcohol-free beer and functional drinks are two strongly growing markets within the beverage sector. The success of alcohol-free beer and functional drinks with relaxing, stress reducing properties might be largely based on their health-benefits. Additionally, exotic flavors along with a high product quality are also key value propositions of these products. In this study, the main potential health benefits of alcohol-free dry-hopped beer and dry-hopped relaxation drinks are reviewed and the main target consumer groups are described.

Brewery news USA, WA: Craft Brew Alliance selling its Woodinville facility
Craft Brew Alliance, Inc. ("CBA”), a leading craft brewing company, announced on December 4 that it has entered into an agreement to sell its Woodinville, Washington facility to Sound Commercial Investment Holdings, LLC for $24.5 million, the Market Insider reported.

The transaction is subject to a financing contingency and other closing conditions that are expected to be resolved by the end of 2017.

As previously announced, the sale of CBA’s Woodinville property, which includes a production facility, office space, and restaurant, will complete a key phase in the company’s ongoing efforts to optimize its brewery footprint, reduce costs and improve gross margins.

While CBA will provide more information on the financial and operational benefits of the sale at closing, the company anticipates a negative impact on 2017 earnings per share in the range of $0.02 to $0.03 as a result of contingencies and transaction costs directly related to the sale.

Brewery news USA, OH: Ohio’s Rivals Brewing Company to take over Fat Head’s Brewery space in Middleburg Heights
After contract producing a line of beer for the last year, Ohio’s Rivals Brewing Company has reached an agreement to take over the current Fat Head’s Brewery space in Middleburg Heights, Brewbound reported on December 4.

As Brewbound previously reported, Fat Head’s broke ground in June on a $12 million, 125,000 sq. ft. destination brewery about a mile from its current headquarters. The new facility will double Fat Head’s production capabilities and enable it to produce as much as 60,000 barrels of beer annually.

Last week, Nick Lowe, the owner of Rivals Sports Grille, a decade-old Middleburg Heights sports bar and restaurant, announced that he had signed a five-year lease on the 35,000 sq. ft. turnkey brewery where Fat Head’s has operated since 2012.

As part of the $2.5 million project, Lowe’s fledgling Rivals Brewing Company LLC has acquired Fat Head’s old brewing equipment in order to begin production in the spring of 2018, and the company plans to expand and remodel the facility’s taproom to better reflect Rivals’ brand identity.

Currently, Rivals Sports Grille contract brews its four beers at Madison, Ohio-based Hop View Brewing Company, and those products are exclusively sold on tap at the restaurant.

Brewery news USA, Washington D.C.: Red Bear Brewing signs a lease to open in D.C.’s redeveloped Uline Arena
The redeveloped Uline Arena in NoMa will soon be home to D.C.'s newest brewery, Bisnow reported on December 1.

Red Bear Brewing signed a lease this week for 7K SF in the ground level of the Douglas Development building.

The brewery is expected to open in late 2018, Red Bear co-founder Cameron Raspet said. The brewery will occupy the retail space on the M Street side of the Uline Arena next to the entrance to the REI and La Colombe Coffee. It will feature a 150-to-200-person taproom and about 15 seats in an outdoor patio, Raspet said.

It will be the first location of Red Bear Brewing, founded by Raspet, Simon Bee and Bryan Van Den Oever. Bee, who lives in Maryland, will be the brewmaster while Van Den Oever, a NoMa resident, will manage the staff and Raspet will manage the company's operations.

"We love craft beer, and we wanted to experience something new and provide something to the community," Raspet said.

The brewers aim to eventually produce 20 types of beer and distribute it locally, but will begin with a smaller selection and will only serve their beer in-house. The beer styles will likely take inspiration ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, BC: Electric Bicycle Brewing launching soon in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood
The growing population of local breweries in the fittingly named Brewery Creek area of Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood is soon to have another addition, with the upcoming opening of Electric Bicycle Brewing, Canadian Beer News reported on November 28.

Located in a former electric bicycle factory at 20 E 4th Avenue, the brewery is being founded by owners Elliot McKerr and Matt Ryan, along with sales and marketing manager Leigh Matkovich, and a head brewer to be announced soon.

Promising to offer “an ideal combination of outrageously good beers with gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches, a great atmosphere and grooving music,” Electric Bicycle is aiming to launch in early 2018. Once open, the team intends to “focus on pushing stylistic limits and delivering flavor forward thirst quenching beers,” and will be asking customers for feedback on what beer styles they’d like the brewery to make.

Brewery news USA, FL: Ellipsis Brewing already open and pouring cold ones in Orlando
Orlando's craft beer scene just got a little more stout. Ellipsis Brewing, in Southeast Orlando, is open and pouring cold ones, the Orlando Weekly reported on December 1.

Just north of Orlando International Airport at 7500 TPC Blvd., the upstart craft brewery has already gained the favor of many a local beer aficionado, and earlier this month they brought their tasty peanut-butter beer to the Orlando Beer Festival.

For the launch, Ellipsis Brewing has five beers lined up, including How Rude!, a New England IPA, and Wild Things, an American brown ale.

Hours are 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Brazil’s Cervejaria OverHop launching production of its beers in Toronto
The Canadian off-shoot of an award-winning Brazilian craft brewery will be launching its first brands next week in Toronto, Canadian Beer News reported on December 1.

Cervejaria OverHop opened in 2016 in Rio de Janerio, and within its first year, two of its beers won medals in the beer awards at the Brazilian edition of Mondial de la Biere. This led to a recently released collaboration with Quebec’s Brasserie Harricana, and a decision to expand further into the Canadian market with an official presence here.

OverHop Brewing Canada is being headed up by Patricia Rios and Tatiana Fulton, both of whom have relocated to Toronto from Brazil to oversee the project. Its beers are being brewed at Common Good Brewing in Scarborough for now, with plans to open a physical location sometime in 2018. The Canadian branch of OverHop will be starting out with two brands – OneLove Double IPA (9% abv, 90 IBU), and Hazy New England IPA (6.5% abv, 50 IBU) – both based on recipes from the original brewery. A number of other brands are being planned for future release, including a Canadian version of the OverLab series of single-hop IPAs that has been popular in Brazil.

Brewery news USA, OH: New brewery may open in Painesville in summer-fall 2018
A major property in downtown Painesville recently was sold.

Painesville Economic Development Director Cathy Bieterman said the former Citizens Bank at 113 Main St. was purchased by 113 Main Street LLC.

According to a news release, 113 Main Street LLC is planning to open a brewery downtown, News-Herald.com reported on December 1.

“As the owners of 113 Main Street, we know that the city of Painesville is a great destination for a brewery,” they said. “Brewpubs offer a high value added production of beer that makes their success margins greater than a typical restaurant. The downtown Painesville area is a destination already with Silvestro’s Depot, the Steele Mansion and Lake Erie College.”

The owners said they hope the brewpub will draw residents and visitors alike to “a very unique building in the heart of the downtown.”

The brewery project is early in the design phase, said 113 Main Street LLC representatives.

“We completed a detailed review of the existing building condition, mechanical equipment, etc. prior to closing,” they said. “We have met with and interviewed architects, contractors, etc. We will be moving forward with the detail design in the next month or so.”

The city is working closely with the new property owners to secure a high-foot ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Center Street Brewing Company coming to Wallingford next fall
A local craft beer enthusiast plans to open up a new microbrewery down-town next year on Wallace Avenue, behind Archie Moore’s restaurant in Wallingford, the Meriden Record-Journal reported on November 30.

Peter Ford, a longtime town resident who has brewed beer at his home for about 30 years, expects to open Center Street Brewing Company in a vacant 2,500-square-foot building at 25 Wallace Ave. next fall. It will serve up to nine craft beers on tap, all brewed on site, he said.

“I make everything from IPAs to double IPAs to brown ale,” Ford said.

Ford has worked as a nurse practitioner for Hartford HealthCare for 20 years. He started thinking about opening a brewery about five years ago after he took a course in “advanced home brewing” at the American Brewers Guild in Middlebury, Vermont.

“That sort of made me realize this is something I’d like to do for a full-time job or as my retirement job,” Ford said.

Ford went back to the American Brewers Guild a few years later to receive his brewing certifi-cation. Ford estimates he has brewed 45 to 50 variations of beer over the years. He is starting the new business with his brother, Tim, who lives in ...More info on site

Brewery news Sri Lanka: President ‘can’t accept reduction in beer prices’
Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena expressed on December 4 displeasure over the reduction in beer prices following his government's new tax formula for alcoholic drinks that made the brew cheaper, economynext reported.

Sirisena said any reduction in alcoholic drinks was not acceptable to the government's temperance drive and said the country had received accolade from the World Health Organisation for its anti-alcohol and tobacco policies.

"I cannot accept the reduction in beer prices... Getting more revenue from alcohol and tobacco should not be part of government policy," he said in parliament while speaking on the health ministry votes.

However, he ended his 15-minute speech by saying that he approved Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera's 2018 budget proposals. A key plank of the budget was the reform of the way alcohol was taxed.

Samaraweera had taken what he called a pragmatic view and imposed tax based on the alcohol content of drinks which made beer and wine cheaper. It is also hoped that lower prices will discourage the consumption of hard liquor.

Following the new tax formula, beer prices fell by about 50 percent while wine too became considerably cheaper.

Any increase in alcohol prices usually lead to an expansion of the illicit liquor industry which does not ...More info on site

Brewery news Malawi: Carlsberg Malawi changes its name to Castel Malawi Limited
Carlsberg Malawi Limited has finally changed its name to Castel Malawi Limited, two years after the French company takeover, the Nyasa Times reported on December 5.

Castel Limited, a French company, took majority shares in the Dutch franchise two years ago, however, the re-branding process has taken long.

The takeover means Carlsberg Malawi Brewery Limited will now be called Castel Malawi Brewery Limited.

The change is effective 24th October, 2017 and is in accordance with Section 52 of the Companies Act of 2013, according to Company Secretary Chipiliro Kauka

“The subsidiaries of Castel Malawi Limited therefore remain Castel Malawi Brewery Limited, Southern Bottlers Limited, and Malawi Distilleries Limited,” Kauka said.

He has since assured that all operation of the group remains constant.

Castel Malawi’s soft drinks business was established in 1955, when the first Coca-Cola products were produced in Malawi under the company name Nyasaland Bottling Company. After Malawi’s independence in 1964, the company name changed to National Bottling Company and continued to produce and distribute sparkling beverages.

The name National Bottling Company was later changed to Southern Bottlers Limited. Southern Bottlers Limited is the only Coca-Cola franchisee in Malawi.

Meanwhile, it is yet to be seen when the branding of their products on the market will start ...More info on site
