HOW ABOUT PRODUCING A DRY HOPPED ALCOHOL FREE BEER?
ABSTRACT
Alcohol-free beer and functional drinks are two strongly
growing markets within the beverage sector. The success
of alcohol-free beer and functional drinks with relaxing,
stress reducing properties might be largely based on their
health-benefits. Additionally, exotic flavors along with a
high product quality are also key value propositions of
these products. In this study, the main potential health
benefits of alcohol-free dry-hopped beer and dry-hopped
relaxation drinks are reviewed and the main target consumer
groups are described.

Canada: Barley production drops 10.2% in 2017
|
Canadian farmers reported a 10.2% decrease in barley production to 7.9 million tonnes in 2017, Statistics Canada said in its latest update on December 6.
The decline was the result of a 4.9% decrease in harvested area to 5.2 million acres, combined with a 5.4% drop in average yield to 69.4 bushels per acre, it is reported.

USA: MillerCoors CEO says Miller Lite has passed Budweiser for third most popular beer nationally
|
For MillerCoors, there's still a long way to the top to reach the domestic dominance of AB InBev's signature offering, Bud Light.
Still, MillerCoors CEO Gavin Hattersley excitedly shared on December 8 that Miller Lite has passed AB InBev's "Great American Lager," Budweiser, for third most popular nationally, behind Bud and Coors light brands. Hattersley said that Miller Lite and Coors Light have been steadily gaining in domestic markets, the Milwaukee Business Journal reported.
"Between Miller and Coors Light, we've taken share in the premium light category away from Bud Light," Hattersley told an audience of more than 350 Milwaukee-area business executives at the Milwaukee Business Journal's Power Breakfast at The Pfister Hotel in downtown Milwaukee. "We've been doing that now for two-and-a-half years, every single quarter."
Hattersley partially chalked that up to the way MillerCoors portrays its two main premium light beers in the market.
"We think our positioning of Miller Lite being the 'Original Lite Beer' and Coors Light being 'The World's Most Refreshing Beer' are great positions and we're building on those," Hattersley said.

USA, UT & CA: Salt Lake City’s Epic Brewing Co. purchasing California’s Telegraph Brewing Co.
|
Salt Lake City’s Epic Brewing Co. is once again expanding beyond its Utah roots, purchasing Telegraph Brewing Co. in Santa Barbara, CA, the Salt Lake Tribune reported on December 6.
“We have been actively looking for great breweries to purchase for the past 18 months and bringing Telegraph Brewing into the Epic family is exciting,” co-founder David Cole announced on the brewery’s website on December 6. “This couldn’t be a better fit — including some advantageous distribution overlaps that create opportunities to expand both brands across California and beyond.”
Brian Thompson, who founded Telegraph Brewing Co. in 2006, said that, with increased competition in the craft beer business, he needed a way to strengthen his company. The infusion of money from Epic will allow Telegraph to increase production capacity and offer new packaging options, including several new 12-ounce cans.
It’s not the first time Epic has expanded beyond Utah. In 2013, the microbrewery opened a second location in Denver.
As part of the Telegraph purchase, Epic will move seven of its foeders — large wooden vessels for aging sour beer — from its Denver brewery to Santa Barbara, enabling Telegraph to produce more sour beers.

USA, OH: Opera House Brewing Company to open in Hillsboro in mid-2018
|
For more than 40 years, wood paneling covered the beautiful arch doorway at the former Hillsboro Opera House, built in the 1800s. Now, two local couples are in the process of restoring the building with a new business, Opera House Brewing Company, thejournal-news.net reported on December 7.
Tony and Jennifer Marcolini of Marcolini Inc. Construction and Jeremy and Jami Schmidt, took off the old wood paneling on Nov. 30 with the help of friends, revealing the new entryway to their business, set to open in mid-2018.
"I think our story begins about four years ago," said Tony Marcolini. "Jen and I decided we wanted to open a brewery. We started touring, researching and drinking. We've traveled just about coast to coast and toured more than 50 breweries."
Marcolini said his original thought for the brewery was the old ice plant, which is home to Marcolini Construction. However, he had the opportunity to purchase the former opera house building from Jim Simpson of Litchfield and the rest is history.

Canada, ON: Brick Brewing reports lower third-quarter profits due to operating challenges
|
Brick Brewing's third-quarter profits fell as the beer maker faced operating challenges related to the consolidation of production in its Kitchener facility, TheRecord.com reported on December 8.
Brick said on December 8 it earned net income of C$387,015 in the three months ended Oct. 29, down from profits of C$854,434 in the third quarter a year ago. Revenue increased slightly to C$11.7 million from C$11.1 million.
The company said that the commissioning of new equipment associated with the transition of production from its former brewery in Formosa to its facility on Bingemans Centre Drive negatively affected its margins in the third quarter. It said it started seeing improvements to operating performance late in October.
Brick noted that sales volume of its Laker brand increased 4.1 per cent in the third quarter compared to the same period a year earlier; sales volume of its Waterloo premium brand grew 9.6 per cent.

USA, CO: Green Earth Brewing Co. open for business in downtown Greeley
|
A new brewery that focuses on sustainability is open for business in downtown Greeley, after being in the works for a couple months, the Greeley Tribune reported on December 6.
Green Earth Brewing Co., 725 10th St., next to Zoe's Cafe and Events, had its soft opening earlier this month and will host a grand opening celebration on the weekend of Dec. 15. On Dec. 15, Green Earth will have Everyone's Table food truck on site, as well as Old Chicago pizza, according to owner Scott Pell. On Dec. 16, Rat's Woodwagon food truck on site, and customers can expect music to be playing all weekend.
All six of Green Earth's taps, which range from a signature black ale to a New England-style IPA, are available.
The brewery's hours are 2-9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, noon to 9 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. It will be closed on Mondays.
Pell and his business partner and brother-in-law, Doug Hansen, signed their lease for the brewery in March. Green Earth Brewing's primary focus is on sustainability, and Pell said he hopes to eventually find a way to use solar or wind energy when brewing his beer on site.

Canada, ON: Small Pony Barrel Works to open its doors on December 9
|
Just over a year after it launched with the first in a series of small batch collaborations brewed at other local breweries, Small Pony Barrel Works has announced that its own location will be opening to the public later this week in Ottawa, Canadian Beer News reported on December 5.
Founded by Sean McVeigh, Small Pony is focused on producing barrel-aged sour ales. Four beers will be available in bottles at opening, including P.A. System – “a golden sour beer aged in oak barrels with the perfect ratio of peaches and apricots” – and three others to be announced on Facebook throughout the week.
Small Pony Barrel Works will be opening on Saturday December 9th at 101 Schneider Road in Ottawa’s Kanata neighbourhood.

USA, OR: Bine Valley Brewing launching on December 8
|
When Bine Valley Brewing owner Donny Raisanen tasted the beers for his upcoming brewery, they didn't turn out exactly how he expected them to, the Statesman Journal reported on December 8.
"I kept saying, 'it's sort of,' 'it's kind of like,' and so I kind of decided to go with it," Raisanen said, days before his Dec. 8 opening.
That's how he came up with the names of his three opening sessions: Kinda Hoppy, Maybe Porter and Sorta Pale.
Raisanen is a homebrewer turned brewery owner, setting up shop in the former Salem Ale Works space. Alongside his three founding beers, Raisanen will have a selection of local favorites on tap like Salem Ale Works' Hootenanny Honey Basil and Santiam Infiltrator Pilsner.
To celebrate his opening, Raisanen is throwing a party. Foodology Mobile Kitchen will serve its American fare on December 8, while JT's food truck will serve tacos on December 9. The brewery will raffle merch like pint glasses and shirts, and the beer will flow — even if it's kinda-sorta-maybe different than expected.

Thailand: New alcohol excise rates expected to drive drinkers of spirits to beer
|
Thailand's overall alcohol consumption is expected to be flat this year thanks to low purchasing power and more morose consumers, as well as a recent hike of excise tax, the Bangkok Post reported on December 7.
According to Thanakorn Kuptajit, president of the Thai Alcohol Beverage Business Association (Tabba), the new excise tax rates for alcohol, which came into force on Sept 16, have driven drinkers of spirits to beer.
But he said higher beer consumption is yet to offset the drop in spirits.
The new excise tax is aimed at making state tax collection more transparent and fair by conforming to international standards as well as protecting public health.
The new tax rates for liquor is based on the volume of alcohol content, meaning higher alcohol concentrations will be subject to higher taxes.
"The spirits companies have been adjusting themselves with price strategies. We expect the spirits industry will fare better in 2018,'' said Mr Thanakorn, also the corporate relations director of Diageo Moet Hennessy Thailand, the distributor of Johnnie Walker spirits in Thailand.

UK: Three new malting barley varieties added to the recommended spring barley list
|
UK’s arable growers aiming at the lucrative malting market have some new high yielding spring barleys in their armoury, unveiled in the latest Recommended Lists from the industry levy-funded Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board, The Scottish Farmer reported on December 7.
This year Lists have gained no less than 22 new varieties, all demonstrating continued improvements in yield, disease resistance and quality, while 27 varieties have been removed because they now fall short.
Three new specifically malting varieties have been added to the Spring Barley list – RGT Asteroid, LG Tomahawk and LG Diablo.
AHDB senior crop scientist Jenna Watts said: “There are now three very high performing new varieties on the list. LG Diablo which yields strongly in the north and is under test for brewing and malt distilling, LG Tomahawk which also yields very highly and is undergoing testing for malt distilling, and RGT Asteroid which is being tested for brewing, malt distilling and grain distilling.
“They all compare favourably with Concerto and Laureate in terms of yield and agronomic features.”
In trials in the north region, LG Diablo has yielded 109% compared to the control, LG Tomahawk yielded 107%, while RGT Asteroid is sitting at 102%. This compares with recently approved Laureate

Ukraine: Barley and wheat stocks as of November 1 lower than last year
|
According to the State Statistics Service, grain and pulse inventories in Ukraine totaled 24.23 mln tonnes as of November 1, 2017, or 10.6% less than at the same time last year (27.11 mln tonnes), UkrAgroConsult reported.
Wheat stocks as of the reporting date were down 4.2% year-on-year at 11.62 mln tonnes against 12.13 mln tonnes as of November 1, 2016. Barley stocks were down 28.3% year-on-year at some 1.98 mln tonnes (2.76 mln tonnes was in November 2016).
Corn inventories are also lower than last year. They totaled 9.23 mln tonnes as of the reporting date, or 12.4% less than last year (10.54 mln tonnes).
The decrease in grain inventories stems primarily from some crop downturn this year. In addition, barley and wheat exports were quite active in the first third of the season, unlike corn shipments.

Australia: AB InBev’s purchase of Pirate Life reignites concerns about craft beer takeovers by global powerhouses
|
AB InBev’s AU$10 mln deal for South Australian craft brewer Pirate Life has reignited concerns over the number of independents being taken over by global powerhouses, Food Navigator Asia reported on December 6.
Pirate Life, founded just in 2015, was crowned best craft brewery at Beer Cartel’s 2017 Australian Craft Beer Survey. It carries a portfolio of different styles of beer including stout, IPA, pale ale, golden ale and a mosaic.
The firm says the acquisition by AB InBev subsidiary Carlton & United Breweries has come at the right time.
“The reality is we have run out of capacity at Hindmarsh. With this partnership we’re in a fortunate position to upgrade to a new, bigger brewery while dedicating Hindmarsh to innovate and craft a whole range of new styles to make sure we keep pushing the boundaries and evolving,” said Jared Proudfoot, co-founder and chief brewer of Pirate Life.
The investment is said to enable further innovation for the Adelaide-based craft brewers. Apart from a new brewing facility, Pirate Life’s current brewery in Hindmarsh will be dedicated to creating new beers, including “sours, seasonal and barrel-aged products”.

UK: Carlsberg UK launches its first limited-edition Christmas beer
|
Carlsberg UK launches its first Christmas beer - a first for the brand, which has not done a festive brew before, Inapub reported on December 6.
The limited edition will be exclusively available on draught in 29 Northampton pubs, with proceeds from sales donated to local charity, the Northamptonshire Community Foundation.
Master brewer Jon Elks has brewed the festive lager in the company's Northampton brewery.
It is described as having a, "full bodied taste with a balance of sweetness and bitterness" and is flavoured with Christmas spices, orange peel and cinnamon.
"This is the first time Carlsberg UK has brewed a Carlsberg beer for Christmas. We were inspired by our colleagues in Denmark, where the famous Tuborg Christmas beer, Julebryg, is so popular this time of year," said Liam Newton, vice president marketing at Carlsberg UK.
"We think beer-drinkers in Northamptonshire deserve a unique brew of their own and our brewers were proud to craft it for them."
The Christmas beer also has its own limited edition stemmed glass.

Nigeria: Nigerian Breweries launches new Stella beer
|
Nigeria’s biggest brewer, Nigerian Breweries, has launched an exciting new brand that captures the changing face of the beer market. Stella beer was unveiled into the Nigerian market at the Grand Ballroom, Eko Hotel and Suites on the 6th of December 2017 in the presence of key stakeholders and consumers, the New Telegraph Newspaper reported on December 7.
Known for its quality brands and market-defining products, Nigerian Breweries launched this specially brewed International lager beer into the market to the satisfaction of millions of beer lovers in the country.
Present at the unveil were representatives from Nigerian Breweries, including Marketing Director Nigerian Breweries Franco Maria Maggi, Portfolio Manager Premium Lager Brands Tokunbo Adodo, Brand Manager Global Brands Oreoluwa Kolawole, amongst others.
Birthed in 1897 and crafted by Belgian master brewers, Stella beer is a product of a very innovative and unique brewing technique. The finest malted barley, high quality hops, and the best quality water come together to make this new offering. Locally brewed Stella is original in its recipe and brewing process, the company said.
