USA: Beer sales estimated to be ‘roughly flat’ this year
|
As the end of 2017 draws near, U.S. beer volume sales remain roughly flat, according to recent data from Chicago-based market research firm IRI Worldwide, Brewbound reported on December 19.
IRI, which tracks beer sales at off-premise retailers, reported that total beer sales through the first 11 months of 2017 exceeded $31.8 billion in the firm’s multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) universe of stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military). Through December 3, U.S. beer volume sales declined 0.5 percent while total beer dollar sales increased 1.1 percent.
Domestic premiums (Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light and others) — the largest beer segment — are in decline, as volume sales dropped 3.9 percent while dollar sales dipped 3 percent.
Meanwhile, sales of domestic super premium, import, and craft beers continued to grow this year.
Domestic super premiums, such as Michelob Ultra, fared the best: Volume sales grew 9.2 percent while dollar sales increased 11.2 percent. Volume sales of import offerings also grew 6.6 percent, while dollar sales increased 8.4 percent through December 3.
Year-to-date craft beer volume sales, meanwhile, increased 3.6 percent while dollar sales grew 5.5 percent during the period.

USA: Beer loses leadership in on-premise category by value in the 52 weeks to October 7
|
Premium spirits in both at-home and out-of-home channels showed the most sales and volume growth in the US for the past 52 weeks ending Oct. 7, 2017, BeverageDaily.com reported on December 19, citing Nielsen data.
“In this modern, experience-driven on-premise environment, premiumization is evident in all categories, however no category highlights this more than spirits,” Scott Elliott, SVP of Nielsen CGA, said.
“High-end” spirits now account for 55% of total spirits volume and 62% of dollar sales, a 3.2% increase from last year, bringing $807 mln to the channel, according to Nielsen.
Ultra-Premium Spirits are growing at the fastest pace (+5% in dollar sales). Premium and ultra-premium whisky and tequila alone have contributed 65% (or $631 million) of total spirits growth. In contrast, middle- and valued-priced spirits combined grew less than 1% in dollar sales, Elliott said.
A similar trend is occurring in off-premise consumption where sales of Irish whiskey, cognac, and tequila are registering the most growth by volume (11.4%, +12.7% and +7.3%, respectively). Ultra-Premium American whiskey and single malt Scotches are also making rapid gains unlike cordials and rum which continue to struggle.

Jamaica: Red Stripe launches new production line to expand beer exports
|
Red Stripe Jamaica on December 19 launched its new Production Line 8 that will grow the brewery's capacity to one million beers per day, powered by liquefied natural gas, the Jamaica Gleaner reported.
The new line will nearly triple the plant's capacity, totalled 375,000 bottles a day prior to the expansion. Production is presently at 376,000 bottles per day on average, Red Stripe told Gleaner Business.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness used the occasion to tout the latest LNG initiative by his government, saying Jamaica Urban Transit Company. JUTC, would begin testing the use of LNG to power its fleet of buses. He also hinted at the introduction of hybrid buses.
On December 18, "Cabinet approved the pilot project for buses to use LNG in Jamaica," Holness said at the commissioning ceremony at Red Stripe's complex in Kingston.
He disclosed the information within the context of Red Stripe's boast that the investment in the plant's energy reconfiguration would reduce carbon emissions equivalent to parking over 1,000 cars for a year.

Australia: Australians facing increase in alcohol prices
|
Drinkers in Australia would face significant price increases for beer and wine under a proposal to cut the nation’s alcohol consumption, the Herald Sun reported on December 19.
Under the draft plan, released by federal and state ministers, the cost of all alcoholic drinks would not be allowed to fall below a set level.
Industry sources expect that base would be A$1.50 per standard drink, leading to rises on a raft of cheap booze options.
A slab of Victoria Bitter — with 24 cans holding 1.4 standard drinks — now costs about A$47 but would jump to over A$50.
A bottle of Yarraglen Yellow sparkling wine would increase from about A$7 to nearly A$10.
But a A$10 four-litre cask of Golden Oak dry white wine holds the equivalent of 30 standard drinks — and that volume would mean a shocking price rise to at least A$45.
The draft plan, designed to reduce binge drinking and alcohol-related harm, also proposes one flat rate of taxation for all alcohol.
For now, there are different rates of tax for beer, wine and spirits. The reform would hit wine drinkers particularly hard, because it is taxed less.

Zimbabwe & Malawi: Delta Corporation seeks approval to acquire stake in Chibuku Products
|
Zimbabwean public company, Delta Corporation Limited has applied to Comesa Competition Commission to acquire stakes in Chibuku Products Limited, the Nyasa Times reported on December 19.
Delta Corporation Limited, a Zimbabwean public company listed on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, is making the acquisition of control of Malawi Traditional Beverages Limited which is incorporated under the laws of Malawi as a private company.
Both Comesa Competition Commission and Malawi’s Competition Fair Trading Commission confirmed the issue to the local media.
Head of Mergers and Acquisitions at the Comesa Competition Commission, Willard Mwemba, said the case is still at preliminary stages of assessment.
“Currently, we are working with our counterparts at the Competition and Fair Trading Commission in Malawi (CFTC), the Competition and Tariff Commission of Zimbabwe and the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission of Zambia to determine the likely effects of the transaction in the market,” Mwemba said.
CFTC Director of Consumer Welfare and Education, Lewis Kulisewa confirmed the issue but said the application will be processed by Comesa.
“The merger application will be processed at the Comesa Competition Commission as it involves several Comesa member states,” he said.

Canada: Barley production forecast to drop by 10% in 2017/18
|
For 2017-18, Canada’s barley production is forecast to decrease by 10% to a near-record low of 7.9 mln tonnes due to lower area and a lower average yield, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their December report.
Although carry-in stocks are expected at a seven-year high (2.1 mln tonnes), supply is forecast to decrease by 1% to 10.2 mln tonnes due to lower production.
Domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 5% to 6.2 mln tonnes due to higher feed and industrial use.
Total barley exports are forecast to increase by 5% to 2.45 mln tonnes due to lower world supplies.
Canada’s barley carry-out stocks are forecast to decrease by 27% to 1.6 mln tonnes but remain above the previous five-year average.
The Lethbridge in-store feed barley price is forecast to increase due to the tight total barley supplies and the decline in the availability of other domestic feed grain substitutes.
The average barley yield was 3.73 tonnes/hectare (t/ha) in Canada, which is, despite the dry conditions on the Western Prairies, the third highest average yield on record. Canada: Barley exports this year well ahead of last season’s pace
|
Canadian barley exports are running well ahead of the year-ago pace, with 677,100 tonnes exported to date, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data, Grainews reported on December 15.
The volume exported compares with only 354,200 tonnes at the same point the previous year.
The domestic usage pace, meanwhile, is running slightly behind the year-ago pace.
