Brewery news USA: Beer sales estimated to be ‘roughly flat’ this year
As the end of 2017 draws near, U.S. beer volume sales remain roughly flat, according to recent data from Chicago-based market research firm IRI Worldwide, Brewbound reported on December 19.

IRI, which tracks beer sales at off-premise retailers, reported that total beer sales through the first 11 months of 2017 exceeded $31.8 billion in the firm’s multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) universe of stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military). Through December 3, U.S. beer volume sales declined 0.5 percent while total beer dollar sales increased 1.1 percent.

Domestic premiums (Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light and others) — the largest beer segment — are in decline, as volume sales dropped 3.9 percent while dollar sales dipped 3 percent.

Meanwhile, sales of domestic super premium, import, and craft beers continued to grow this year.

Domestic super premiums, such as Michelob Ultra, fared the best: Volume sales grew 9.2 percent while dollar sales increased 11.2 percent. Volume sales of import offerings also grew 6.6 percent, while dollar sales increased 8.4 percent through December 3.

Year-to-date craft beer volume sales, meanwhile, increased 3.6 percent while dollar sales grew 5.5 percent during the period.

Barley news Canada: Barley production forecast to drop by 10% in 2017/18
For 2017-18, Canada’s barley production is forecast to decrease by 10% to a near-record low of 7.9 mln tonnes due to lower area and a lower average yield, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in their December report.

Although carry-in stocks are expected at a seven-year high (2.1 mln tonnes), supply is forecast to decrease by 1% to 10.2 mln tonnes due to lower production.

Domestic barley use is forecast to increase by 5% to 6.2 mln tonnes due to higher feed and industrial use.

Total barley exports are forecast to increase by 5% to 2.45 mln tonnes due to lower world supplies.

Canada’s barley carry-out stocks are forecast to decrease by 27% to 1.6 mln tonnes but remain above the previous five-year average.

The Lethbridge in-store feed barley price is forecast to increase due to the tight total barley supplies and the decline in the availability of other domestic feed grain substitutes.

The average barley yield was 3.73 tonnes/hectare (t/ha) in Canada, which is, despite the dry conditions on the Western Prairies, the third highest average yield on record. Barley yields in Eastern Canada were slightly below last crop year and the previous three-year average. Yields were better in the ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Beer loses leadership in on-premise category by value in the 52 weeks to October 7
Premium spirits in both at-home and out-of-home channels showed the most sales and volume growth in the US for the past 52 weeks ending Oct. 7, 2017, BeverageDaily.com reported on December 19, citing Nielsen data.

“In this modern, experience-driven on-premise environment, premiumization is evident in all categories, however no category highlights this more than spirits,” Scott Elliott, SVP of Nielsen CGA, said.

“High-end” spirits now account for 55% of total spirits volume and 62% of dollar sales, a 3.2% increase from last year, bringing $807 mln to the channel, according to Nielsen.

Ultra-Premium Spirits are growing at the fastest pace (+5% in dollar sales). Premium and ultra-premium whisky and tequila alone have contributed 65% (or $631 million) of total spirits growth. In contrast, middle- and valued-priced spirits combined grew less than 1% in dollar sales, Elliott said.

A similar trend is occurring in off-premise consumption where sales of Irish whiskey, cognac, and tequila are registering the most growth by volume (11.4%, +12.7% and +7.3%, respectively). Ultra-Premium American whiskey and single malt Scotches are also making rapid gains unlike cordials and rum which continue to struggle.

“As more consumers shop and buy in different ways and in different places, discretionary categories like adult beverages have to ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Barley exports this year well ahead of last season’s pace
Canadian barley exports are running well ahead of the year-ago pace, with 677,100 tonnes exported to date, according to the latest Canadian Grain Commission data, Grainews reported on December 15.

The volume exported compares with only 354,200 tonnes at the same point the previous year.

The domestic usage pace, meanwhile, is running slightly behind the year-ago pace.

Brewery news USA, AZ: Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company to open new location in downtown Phoenix
Arizona Wilderness Brewing Company, one of the state’s most popular breweries, said on December 15 it would open a new location in downtown Phoenix, KTAR.com reported.

In a blog post, the brewery said it planned to open near Second and Roosevelt streets in spring 2019.

“We believe that Phoenix, one of the planet’s youngest cities, is ripe for greatness,” the post written by the brewery’s founder, Jonathan Buford, read.

“The hanging fruit is ready for the pickin’. We will be bringing our experiences from travel to a downtown that is on the cusp of a cultural explosion.”

The new location will offer a counter-style restaurant that serves burgers, wine, cocktails and, of course, beer.

“We will combine the goodness of our Arizona beef burgers and the multitude of Arizona produce, raised by farmers that we trust and admire,” Buford wrote.

It will also have a large patio beer garden designed to mix German and American hangouts.

“The massive outdoor space will showcase Arizona trees and plants which will be an open environment allowing the patio gardens to be enjoyed wherever you prefer to sit,” Buford wrote.

The brewery said customers should expect an “awesome” to-go beer program that will allow it to greatly expand its bottle and can ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB: Paddy’s Barbecue & Brewery now open in Calgary
A new establishment that promises to offer “the best small batch brewery and Southern style barbecue” is now open in Calgary’s Manchester Industrial Park, Canadian Beer News reported on December 12.

Paddy’s Barbecue & Brewery has been launched by the owners of Sorrenti’s Catering, and is offering a menu of barbecue favourites including brisket, pulled pork, smoked turkey breast, and smoked chicken wings, along with various side dishes.

House beers brewed on a custom built 5 hectolitre brewhouse are available on tap and in growlers, with the selection including Multigrain Pale Ale, Pilsner, Black Lager, IPA, Vienna Lager, Stout, ISA, and Dry Hopped English Bitter.

Paddy’s is located at 3610 Burnsland Road SE in Calgary, and is open Thursday to Sunday.

Brewery news USA, MD: Balt County Brewing planning to open by late February
When Rich Mak moved from Chattanooga, Tenn., to Baltimore County in 2015, he didn’t see many places where he’d want to hang out and have a beer, the Baltimore Sun reported on December 19.

“I was like, ‘What is going on with this Cockeysville area? There is nowhere to go around here,’” Mak said. “It was just kind of odd.”

This winter, the Parkton resident will look to add some variety with Balt County Brewing, a 12,000-square-foot brewery and taproom in a Hunt Valley industrial park. Located at 10900 Gilroy Road, the brewery plans to open by late February, Mak said. Balt County Brewing will not distribute its beers to stores or bars, he said, so customers will have to come to the brewery to try the varieties. The brewery will offer a rotating cast of 24 original beers at a time, with no flagship brews, Mak said.

“The only way we’re going to sell beer is if we get a lot of people in here. If you do that, then guess what? You get a lot of input,” said Mak, 45. “The people are going to be telling us one pint at a time whether they like it or don’t like it.”

Brewery news USA, OH: Rolling Mill Brewing to start serving its gluten-free beer range on December 22
Rolling Mill Brewing Company will open Friday, December 22 at 916 1st Ave., Middletown, Ohio in a 5,648-square-foot commercial warehouse, the Dayton Daily News reported on December 19.

The new business is the work of Middletown native Joshua Laubach, the company’s brew master and director of operations, and his wife, Megan, who serves as director of business development and administration.

Joshua Laubach previously told the Journal-News he has more than five years of experience in both brewing and management in the local steel industry, and that “brewing is a passion” for both he and his wife.

Rolling Mill Brewing Company will produce and distribute a variation of beers year-round, including a variety of European and American lagers/ales, plus seasonal specials. The brews will be completely gluten free, being produced in absence of wheat, barley and rye while still using traditional brewing techniques.

The business gets its name from the continuous strip rolling process designed in Middletown many years ago, Joshua Laubach said.

“It’s a process that’s revolutionized the steel industry and I think it had a lot to do with the growth of industry in the city and the growth of community and opportunity in the city, so it’s something we really wanted to speak ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Door County Brewing to branch out into Hacienda Brewing
Door County Brewing is expecting a new addition. Beginning Feb. 3, members of the Door County Brewing Co. Music Hall will branch out to make beers under the name Hacienda Brewing, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported on December 15.

"Hacienda is all the stuff we're doing in the taproom, the weird beers with weird ingredients," said Danny McMahon.

Hacienda will focus on experimental hoppy ales and stouts as well as traditional and non-traditional Belgian/farmhouse-inspired ales. One example McMahon gave is Florida Guava, a New England style IPA with guava.

You need the back story to understand completely. Door County Brewing opened in Baileys Harbor nearly five years ago with flagship brews like Little Sister Witbier and Polka King Porter.

It quickly ran out of space and opened a new taproom at 8099 WI-57 in Baileys Harbor.

The brewery kept the old 7-barrel brewery and used it for the experimental beers sold in the new taproom. Flagship beers destined for wider distribution were made at Octopi Brewing in Waunakee and will continue to be made there.

"Octopi is only 10 minutes from our largest distributor," McMahon said.

The new taproom, known as Door County Brewing Co., and Music Hall, opened July 1 but the equipment for the adjoining ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Weatherhead Brew Co. being founded by three local couples in Perth
A brewery planned for the Eastern Ontario town of Perth has announced where it will be located when it opens next year, Canadian Beer News reported on December 12.

Weatherhead Brew Co. is being founded by three local couples – Tyler & Jaana Brett, Dan & Mary-Catherine Allatt, Andrew & Kelly James – along with brewmaster Hugh Colbert, and will be situated at the corner of Wilson St. W. and Welland St.

As reported by Inside Ottawa Valley, representatives from Weatherhead made a presentation at a recent tourism summit, and indicated that they hope to be open by the summer of 2018. The facility is planned to include a brewery, taproom, and a kitchen serving tapas-style sharing plates to pair with the beers.

Brewery news USA, NY: Irish Mafia Brewing Company already open in Bloomfield
Mark Mansfield knew he wanted his craft-brewing business to have some tie to Ireland, MPNnow.com reported on December 14.

So Mansfield binge watched Irish movies of all sorts — new, old, funny, serious. Nothing stuck.

As a vice president of corporate sales at Corsair Display Systems at the time, Mansfield, who said he is half-Irish, traveled a lot. On one business trip he was reading the book “Black Mass” about Irish gangster Whitey Bulger.

“Halfway through it, I shut the book. I leaned right over to the guy next to me and said, ‘What do you think of the Irish Mafia Brewing Company?’” Mansfield said. “He said, ‘That’s awesome. Is that your company?’ I said, ‘Yep.’ And that’s the not-so-sexy story of our name.”

And in November, the Irish Mafia Brewing Company opened on Whalen Road, near the intersection with Routes 5 and 20 known as Toomey’s Corners in Bloomfield, NY. Mansfield’s mother is a Toomey.

“It’s kind of cool to bring the Toomey back to Toomey’s Corners,” Mansfield said. “Just coming back to Bloomfield is a big thing for me. I spent the most important years of my life, which is developing and friendships and a sense of home, here.”

And one of his first ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WV: Mountain State Brewing Company coming to Charles Pointe in 2018
Charles Pointe, the development located off the Jerry Dove exit of I-79 in West Virginia, announced that Mountain State Brewing Company will be coming to the area, WBOY-TV reported on December 14.

Mountain State Brewing Company will be building a free-standing restaurant near Fairmont Federal Credit Union. This will make the third location for the restaurant.

Developers with Charles Pointe said that the restaurant fulfils its goals for the area by providing a go-to place for people of all ages.

"So they are in the design right now. They already have a contractor lined up and they are doing it as a design build to control costs and to speed up the process. They are hoping to be open in 2018, more so in the summer," said Mark Dellana, executive director of development.

Brewery news USA, TX: Brew & Brew opening a brewpub in East Austin
The owners behind the East Austin coffee shop the Wright Bros. Brew & Brew have been busy. They’re opening not only Better Half Coffee & Cocktails on West Fifth Street, a few blocks west of North Lamar Boulevard — but also a brewpub, Hold Out Brewing, right next door, austin360 reported on December 18.

To run it, owners Matt and Grady Wright and Matthew Bolick have recruited two forces in their respective fields: Brent "Schmitty" Sapstead, longtime head brewer and production manager at Real Ale Brewing Company; and Rich Reimbolt, chef de cuisine of Austin's Jeffrey's and Josephine House restaurants.

Sister restaurant Better Half, which will have Reimbolt serving as executive chef, is expected to open soon, but beer lovers will have to wait until late next year for Hold Out.

It sounds like it’ll be worth the wait. The brewing program will focus on beers “the founders like to drink, including lagers, hop-forward pale ales, and a unique seasonal series that draws inspiration from Texas agriculture,” according to a news release. A 10-barrel system will make the mainstays, while a one-barrel pilot system will be reserved for experimental beers and collaborations.

"We want to make beers brewed to taste, not just to ...More info on site

Brewery news Jamaica: Red Stripe launches new production line to expand beer exports
Red Stripe Jamaica on December 19 launched its new Production Line 8 that will grow the brewery's capacity to one million beers per day, powered by liquefied natural gas, the Jamaica Gleaner reported.

The new line will nearly triple the plant's capacity, totalled 375,000 bottles a day prior to the expansion. Production is presently at 376,000 bottles per day on average, Red Stripe told Gleaner Business.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness used the occasion to tout the latest LNG initiative by his government, saying Jamaica Urban Transit Company. JUTC, would begin testing the use of LNG to power its fleet of buses. He also hinted at the introduction of hybrid buses.

On December 18, "Cabinet approved the pilot project for buses to use LNG in Jamaica," Holness said at the commissioning ceremony at Red Stripe's complex in Kingston.

He disclosed the information within the context of Red Stripe's boast that the investment in the plant's energy reconfiguration would reduce carbon emissions equivalent to parking over 1,000 cars for a year.

“Now you talk about this plant and the equivalent number of cars it will take off the road - well just imagine when we have a fleet of buses powered by LNG, and possibly electricity," Holness ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: Australians facing increase in alcohol prices
Drinkers in Australia would face significant price increases for beer and wine under a proposal to cut the nation’s alcohol consumption, the Herald Sun reported on December 19.

Under the draft plan, released by federal and state ministers, the cost of all alcoholic drinks would not be allowed to fall below a set level.

Industry sources expect that base would be A$1.50 per standard drink, leading to rises on a raft of cheap booze options.
