USA: Big beer sales continue to slide
|
When it rains, it pours, the old saying goes, but unfortunately for the U.S.' biggest brewers, beer drinkers aren't pouring as many of their pints as they once did. Instead, they've turned to craft beer and, increasingly, Mexican imports, the Motley Fool reported on December 21.
In its third-quarter earnings report last month, Anheuser-Busch InBev saw its own production and sales fall. The megabrewer said North American volumes fell over 6% to 31.9 million hectoliters, while revenues were down 5% to $4.3 billion. Year to date, they're down almost 4% and 2.5%, respectively, suggesting the downturn is accelerating.
In particular, global Budweiser sales were down 2.2% in the third quarter, but if you removed U.S. sales from the picture, they were actually up 4.4%.
Similarly, Molson Coors also reported a decline in volumes and sales in the U.S. for its Miller Lite brand, though global volumes inched ahead 0.7% for the period. The brand was, however, able to gain market share in the U.S. premium light beer segment, the 12th consecutive quarter it had done so.
While big beers like Budweiser and Miller Lite continue to see sales slide, craft beer, which despite the decline in its growth rate is still actually growing, now

USA: Hop growers set new acreage, volume and value records in 2017
|
U.S. hop growers set new records in acreage, volume and value in 2017 and for the first time Idaho surpassed Oregon in annual production, the Capital Press reported on December 21.
While the rate of growth of craft breweries has been slowing and inventories of hops have been increasing, the 2017 totals may not be peaks.
Acreage likely will increase slightly in 2018, more fields planted in recent years will come into production and some acres will shift from aroma into high alpha varieties at generally much higher yields, said Pete Mahony, vice president of supply chain management and purchasing for John I. Haas, a major processor and grower in Yakima.
“It’s simply difficult to slow a fast moving train. It might take a couple of years yet for the brakes to engage,” Mahony said.
Growth of craft breweries has fueled the increase of aroma variety hops in recent years but inventories have been increasing reflective of supply catching up with demand as the rate of craft brewery growth has slowed. On Sept. 1, U.S. hop stocks were 98 million pounds, up 15 percent from a year earlier.
In 2017, U.S. hop production totaled a record 104 million pounds, up 20 percent from the 2016

USA: Congress passes the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act of 2017
|
The US Congress has passed the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act of 2017 (CBMTRA), a bill that will cut the federal excise tax on beer, spirits, and wine producers effective on Jan. 1, 2018, BeverageDaily.com reported on December 21.
A number of bipartisan lawmakers as well as organizations within the US craft beverage industry including the Brewers Association (BA), the Distilled Spirits Council (DISCUS), and the Wine Institute have supported the bill since it was introduced on Jan. 30, 2017.
The bill will reduce the federal excise tax on beer from $7/barrel to $3.50/barrel for the first 60,000 barrels for brewers producing less than two million barrels of beer annually. For all other brewers and beer importers, the tax will be reduced to $16/barrel (from $18/barrel) on the first six million barrels, and the bill maintains the current $18/barrel rate for barrelage over six million.
Additionally, CBMTRA increases collaboration between brewers by permitting transfer of beer between bonded facilities without tax liability.
The reductions in barrel taxes represent more than $142m in annual savings, allowing small brewers to reinvest the extra capital into their breweries and operations, according to the BA.

USA, OH: Uniontown Brewing Co. opens its doors in Ashland
|
The long-awaited Uniontown Brewing Co. opened on December 20 in Ashland, drawing a crowd downtown to check out the restaurant, try Uniontown's house brews by the glass, take home a growler or grab some gift cards as holiday presents, the Richland Source reported on December 20.
"We're excited to be open and finally getting going," said Anna Reynolds, who co-owns the restaurant and brewery with her husband, Doug. "We wanted to be open before Christmas, and today seemed like a good day.”
"It's amazing. People have been very patient and kind and so excited for us and that's overwhelming."
Though they didn't announce an opening date in advance, word traveled quickly once the news of the business opening hit social media.
"We've been following these guys on Facebook and couldn't wait until they opened, and as soon as they did I texted my husband and we came home from work," said Katie Davis, one of the restaurant's first customers at lunchtime on December 20.
Katie and Jason Davis said they have been driving to Wooster regularly to go out to eat and are glad to have a new option in town.
"We've both been saying for some time that we think Ashland's ready

Canada, ON: Refined Fool Brewing opens second location in Sarnia
|
Refined Fool Brewing has announced via social media that its second location is now open at 1326 London Road in Sarnia, Canadian Beer News reported on December 21.
As announced earlier this year, the facility in a former home renovation centre will produce “nearly 2,500 barrels a year at startup, with long-term annual production at the site of just over 9,700 barrels.”
Public access at the new location is currently limited to the retail store area, where bottles of beer and branded merchandise are available for purchase. A taproom and restaurant will be opening in early 2018, and growler sales will be added at that time.
While most of Refined Fool’s production has shifted to the new brewery, the taproom and retail store at the existing downtown location will also remain open.
The store at the London Road location will be open from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily for the rest of 2017.

USA, NC: Rivermen Brewing Co. to open its doors on December 23
|
For the team behind a Belmont brewery, the effort to relocate to a more spacious spot downtown has at times felt like paddling upstream.
But after more than a year and a half of work, Rivermen Brewing Co. has seen the currents shift in its favor as it approaches a long-awaited grand opening on December 23, the Gaston Gazette reported.
“We are officially up on the flight deck and cleared for takeoff,” brewery owner Pat Brennan said earlier this week.
Rivermen offered patrons a sneak peak of its new digs beginning at lunchtime Thursday and on into the dinner hours. They will do the same thing Friday before throwing the formal, day-long party Saturday.
Just succeeding in opening before Dec. 25 amounted to a definitive early Christmas present for Brennan and his team. In late November, they set an opening date of Dec. 9, but that had to be pushed back another handful of times due to a slew of inspection issues. Most recently, the local fire marshal learned that the building sprinkler system did not have a current inspection, and the property owners had to scramble to address that while Brennan waited helplessly in the wings.
But patrons are now getting their first look

USA & China: Stone Brewing starts official exports of its beers to China
|
Stone Brewing has started selling its beers in China, NBC 7 San Diego reported on December 22.
The Escondido, CA-based company’s brews have been available in China through the so-called grey market without company approval and were often shipped warm and with their expiration dates removed, said Greg Koch, Stone Brewing executive chairman and co-founder.
Stone beer is now shipped via the company’s cold, expedited supply chain. Temperatures are tracked throughout shipping.
“I returned from China energized and blown away by the welcome we received,” Koch said. “Our reputation has evidently preceded us, and I loved being there as our fans enjoyed the bold and complex aromas of flavors of uber fresh Stone beers for the first time.”
Among the Chinese locations stocking Stone beer are Liangshi Brewery’s Dao Taproom in Beijing; Tipsy Bar & Restaurant, Bravo, and The South 12 Craft Beer Bar in Guangzhou; Hugo Brewpub’s Foam Ranger Taproom in Xi’an; The Pub in Shenzhen; and Dazhimen Beer Restaurant, and Commune in Wuhan.

USA, FL: Fishweir Brewing Co. to open as predominantly sour brewery
|
The owners of Fishweir Brewing Co. want to be part of the Murray Hill revitalization – and bring a distinctive taste to Jacksonville’s craft beer scene, the Jacksonville Daily Record reports.
Broc Flores and his wife, Stacey, intend to renovate the former Fat Kat nightclub at 1183 Edgewood Ave. S. into the area’s first predominantly sour brewery.
The owner of the building at 1183 Edgewood Ave. S. has begun to remove some debris from the former Fat Kat nightclub in preparation to remodel the property into the Fishweir Brewing Co.
The 5,975-square-foot building was built in 1942. It’s next to B Street Eats and Maple Street Biscuit Co.
Before the couple can proceed, they need the property rezoned from Commercial Community General-1 to Planned Unit Development.
The building owner has begun some removal of interior debris. There is no timetable for construction.
Broc Flores said he has been an avid home brewer for more than 10 years and his wife managed a distillery and tasting room in South Carolina for three years.
Sour beers traditionally have come from Belgium. They have a tart, acidic, sour taste made by adding wild yeast or specific bacteria into the mixture.
Flores said while most ales take three to four weeks to

USA, NC: Husband and wife to launch Triskelion Brewing Company on New Year’s Eve
|
Triskelion Brewing Company will become the area’s newest brewery when it opens New Year’s Eve, a modern place to grab a beer that its owners hope will become a catalyst for more positive development along Hendersonville’s historic Seventh Avenue, BlueRidgeNow.com reported on December 20.
Longtime Henderson County residents, Jonathan and Becky Ayers have been homebrewing for 10 years, six of those before planning to open a commercial brewery. Jonathan Ayers worked for more than 20 years in construction before deciding that what he really wanted to do full-time was brew.
The brewery has been a long time in the making. The Ayers have meticulously planned every last detail in the last four years.
During that time, Jonathan attended Blue Ridge Community College, starting with night classes for one semester. He aced his classes that first semester and earned a General Brewing Certificate, Cicerone Certification Certified Beer Server, and Beer Steward certification, but he also learned how much he didn’t know and decided then to enroll in the full two-year program.
While homebrewing may teach a lot about brewing beer, it doesn’t necessarily translate into a successful taproom and full production brewery, the Ayerses said.
“It’s been a long process to get us to where we’re

USA, FL: Lost City Brewing Company to become North Miami’s second brewery
|
North Miami is getting a second brewery, and the first one hasn't even opened yet, the Miami New Times reported on December 21.
Lost City Brewing Company signed a lease for a location at 12207 NE 13th Ct., two blocks from MOCA Plaza, according to city documents.
Descarga Brewing Company, North Miami's other brewery, is slated to open at 12355 NE 13th Ave. Neither brewery has announced an opening date.
Chris Campos and Daniel Morales are two of the brewers behind Lost City Brewing. Diego Escobar, who owned and operated Miami Beach's Abraxas Lounge for many years before its closing in 2013, is listed as a managing partner. Neither immediately responded to New Times' requests for comment.
The growth of the craft beer industry has captivated North Miami, according to North Miami Brewfest organizer Nick Armada, who says the city sees the industry as a neighborhood revitalizer. According to city documents, North Miami awarded Descarga Brewing at least $150,000 in business attraction grant money.
"They're getting money together to bring breweries into the city of North Miami," Armada says.
Lost City Brewing has been in the works for several years. Before changing its name to Lost City, the brewing company was formerly known as 4th Age

USA, PA: Hemauer Brewing Co. planned in Dillsburg’s Warrington Township soon
|
A local automotive service manager in northern York County is looking to trade in one job for another as he pursues his dream of brewing beer professionally, the Central Penn Business Journal reported.
Brooks Hemauer, a service manager at Faulkner Infiniti who has been homebrewing for about four years, plans to convert the garage at his Warrington Township home into a small brewing operation that would not be open to the public.
Hemauer Brewing Co. would self-distribute its beer to local bars and restaurants, maybe as early as the second quarter of 2018, while working toward opening its own tasting room in downtown Dillsburg by 2019.
Hemauer came before the township's zoning hearing board on December 19, where he was granted a special exception to brew beer as a rural occupation in the rural agricultural zone where he lives. It isn't a permitted use under the township's zoning ordinance.
With the local board's approval, Hemauer said he will move forward with state and federal licensing approvals, as well as renovations, to begin making beer at his Cabin Hollow Road property.
Hemauer said having a home-based brewery gives him greater control over startup costs and more flexibility to manage his time between his full-time job,

USA, CT: Milford's Planning and Zoning Board gives permit to open Milford’s first brewery Tribus Beer Company
|
Milford's Planning and Zoning Board voted on December 19 in favor of a special permit needed to allow a craft brewery proposal to fully move forward, News 12 Connecticut reported.
It will be the first brewery in Milford and is proposed for 100 Raton Drive, an old industrial site. The area is zoned to allow beer production, but Tribus Beer Company needed an exception permit to build a pub and patio.
Supporters of the project include Milford native and beer enthusiast Brett Broesder, who started a petition in favor of it. More than 500 people have signed the petition. Broesder says Connecticut is in the middle of a craft beer boom resulting in a nearly $569 million economic impact.
Several neighbors have concerns about the pub and patio. They say they're worried about drunken drivers, added traffic on nearby residential roads and noise.
A traffic study estimates the project would not have a significant impact, with an additional 37 cars during the peak evening traffic hour. Tribus says there are no plans for outdoor music or entertainment.
The company says it hopes to start serving beer in about a month.

USA, WY: Cowboy State Brewing getting ready to open in Casper
|
A new brewery in a small town south of Casper is about to supply craft beer to thirsty University of Wyoming sports fans in Laramie, the Oil City reported on December 20.
Cowboy State Brewing partners Jason and Anna Knopp and Bill and Roxie Hensley formed the brewery earlier this year and have been on a sleepless quest to get it started.
“This equipment was in Casper, just hanging out, so we bought it off them,” said Jason Knopp. “Them” are the owners of Fat Canvas Brewing, which made a valiant effort to establish a brewery in Casper before running out of funding.
The Hensleys own the building, formally the Four Aces, in central Glenrock. Knopp, with experience in engineering and construction, went about drastically remodeling the former dining room space by cutting out the top floor and making a sunken brewing room. Large, expensive equipment was then carefully lowered into the space and eventually assembled.
Along with the Fat Canvas brew kettles, Knopp and Hensley purchased more supporting equipment for a 10-barrel system. They also have a 20-barrel fermenter to make double batches, which gives them the ability to produce 60 kegs of beer a week.
“We have a golden ale, a brown

USA, WI: The Benjamin Beer Co. to close for good on December 24
|
The Benjamin Beer Co. plans to close for good on Sunday, December 24, according to its Facebook page, the Journal Times reported on December 20.
Jim Kennedy, president of Benjamin Beer, wrote a lengthy post saying after low sales “a small scale three-barrel brewery will always struggle to be profitable or provide the owners with reasonable income.”
The Benjamin Beer Co., 507 Sixth St., opened in June 2016 and was Downtown Racine’s first microbrewery. Kennedy declined a request for an interview on December 19 to elaborate on his decision.
Benjamin Beer Co.’s first microbrewery opened in September 2014, in 1,265 square feet of space in Paddock Lake in western Kenosha County, but closed in July 2015 after outgrowing that site, Kennedy said. After considering moving to a second Kenosha County site, Kennedy found his way to Racine.
“We’re excited because we think it’s a very synergistic location for us,” with a recent surge in business startups along that stretch of Sixth Street, Kennedy said at the time.
To accommodate the brewery, Racine had to amend its zoning ordinance to allow breweries and brew pubs. A pub serving food had been part of Kennedy’s original vision for the Racine site.
“Our primary business is beer,” Kennedy wrote

South Korea: Beer confirmed as preferred beverage in a recent consumption survey
|
Drinking remained a popular pastime in Korea this year, and Koreans in their 20s and 30s drank mixed liquor, called poktanju, the most, a consumption survey by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety showed on December 21.
Consumption of somaek, a combination of beer and soju, increased most notably in 30-year somethings by 11.6 percent from last year and by 5.6 percent for those in their 20s.
