DRY HOP BITTERNESS COMPOSITION
ABSTRACT
Why is the bitterness of dry hopped beers so different?
This question has been heavily investigated in recent
years. We learned that the humulinones are largely
responsible for a part of the bitterness in beer and we
also learned that the content of iso-alpha acids slightly
decreases with dry hopping - exactly why is not known.
Also unclear so far is the role of polyphenols. A new study from Oregon State University shows conclusively that both the polyphenols and humulinones contribute to the
sensory and the IBU bitterness of dry hopped beer. How
can we translate this knowledge in an easy bitterness
determination analysis?

USA, AZ: SanTan Brewing Company planning brewpub in Phoenix
|
SanTan Brewing Company is expanding with a brewpub in Phoenix, ABC15 Arizona reported on December 21.
The Chandler-based brewery will take over the building formerly occupied by Z'Tejas near Bethany Home Road and 16th Street.
"We've been looking for the right location for years and we've finally found the perfect spot!" said Anthony Canecchia, who founded the brewery in 2007, in a news release about the expansion.
The Phoenix brewpub will be the brewery's second location. It will have the same beer and food as its flagship brewery in downtown Chandler. It is slated to open spring 2018.
As for the building, Canecchia said it "will perfectly compliment the interior and exterior remodel we have planned." No further details on what that remodel will entail or look like were released.
"We're excited to join a community filled with Arizona owned businesses and look forward to being part of the neighborhood," Carnecchia said.
SanTan is one of the Valley's most well-known breweries. It has at least 10 southwestern-style ales including Devil's Ale and Mr. Pineapple.
The brewery said updates on the new location would be posted on its website and Facebook page.
The announcement joins at least two other breweries who've revealed plans to expand into Phoenix.

USA, MI: Battle Creek, MI inviting brew masters and distillers to open town’s first brewery, brew pub or distillery
|
Attention brew masters and distillers — if you think you have what it takes to become Battle Creek’s one and only brewery, brew pub or distillery, you’re in luck, WOODTV.com reported on December 27.
Battle Creek Unlimited has issued a request for proposals and is offering up to $200,000 to the winner.
In a part of the state known for its breweries and beer, Battle Creek is feeling left out in the cold. Arcadia shut down in August, leaving downtown with no brewpubs or distilleries.
Now, Battle Creek Unlimited is doing something about it.
“We have a number of buildings downtown that are available,” said John Hart, Cereal City Development Corp. development director. “Recently, Battle Creek Unlimited has got them back in their possession and have created RFPs in order to attract some interest in them.”
Battle Creek Unlimited is a nonprofit development organization. It wants to see a brewer or distiller move into one of its three buildings it acquired earlier this year — all of which have sat vacant for at least 10 years.
Take your pick. There’s 15 Carlyle St., 119/121 W. Michigan Ave. and 64 W. Michigan Ave.
“They’re due,” says Hart. “And they’re ripe for redevelopment.”
Those incentives include $200,000 in financial

USA, MI: Hillsdale Brewing Company gearing up for late January opening
|
After three years, multiple delays and thousands of Facebook likes, the Hillsdale Brewing Company is finally gearing up for a late January opening, The Hillside Daily News reported on December 23.
“I apologize for it taking so long,” said the brewery’s co-owner and chief brewer, Roy Finch, on December 21.
Along with being chief brewer, Finch also currently is a volunteer firefighter with the Allen Township Fire Department and works full-time at American Axle in Litchfield.
“There’s a lot of people [asking], ‘What’s taking so long?’ or ‘Is this really going to happen?’ And I’ve been telling everybody all along, ’It’s not just a Facebook page, this is going to happen,” he said.
Finch admits that he launched the Facebook page too early, long before he and his wife Felicia, who co-own the pub with Cinda Conant, had much of anything to show. Now, years later, the exterior—dominated by chalky white columns and rust-colored bricks — hasn’t changed much, causing many to speculate that Finch and company haven’t accomplished much.
But, take a look inside, and it quickly becomes clear that the work is nearly done. The bar, with eight taps behind it, and several stools in front, runs from one end of the foyer

USA, SC: Slow Play Brewing scheduled to launch in Rock Hill in summer 2018
|
A Rock Hill craft brewery is scheduled to open in summer 2018 at the site of a former repair shop, just steps from the Winthrop University campus, The Herald reported on December 27.
Slow Play Brewing soon will move into the building currently occupied by Fourman’s Repair Shop at 274 Columbia Ave.
Co-owners Ben Lee and Ron Fasick will be among those to lead and manage the new brewery, which will eventually produce its own beer for thirsty consumers.
“It’ll be a neighborhood brewery,” Lee said. “People will be able to come have beers, music will be a big part of it. We’re envisioning an active area for people to come and have fun.”
Fourman’s Repair Shop will close on December 29. Since the early 1970s, it has served as a popular parts shop that both sells and services products for landscaping.
Slow Play recently earned permission from the Rock Hill zoning appeals board to operate as a brewery at the site that’s currently zoned “industry business.”
In a statement, a Winthrop University official expressed optimism that the brewery would add to the downtown atmosphere for its students.
The site is just a short walk from Alumni Drive on campus.
“Winthrop is excited to be part of Rock

USA, NJ: The Riverton Borough Council votes to adopt ordinance allowing ‘limited brewery’ n the county
|
The Riverton borough has opened its doors to potentially be the next home of a craft microbrewery in the county, the Burlington County Times reported on December 27.
The Borough Council voted unanimously at a special meeting on December 27 to adopt an ordinance allowing a “limited brewery” in either the neighborhood business or general business zone. The municipality is one of the last dry towns in Burlington County.
“This is what we’ve been talking about now for a couple of months,” Mayor Suzanne Cairns Wells said. “We added general business district to this ordinance at our last meeting because that was a recommendation of the Planning Board, and we all concurred that that was a good thing.”
The neighborhood business district includes Broad Street from the Palmyra border to just past Main Street and a few streets near Broad and Main. The general business district is near the Cinnaminson border in the area around and including the CVS pharmacy, Cairns Wells said.
Any potential brewery would not be allowed to serve food or “operate a restaurant,” according to the ordinance.
Resident Ray Reis praised the council for its decision.
“I think it’s a good thing for the town, for one, and I think the open-mindedness

Malaysia: Brewers expected to benefit from 2018 World Soccer Cup
|
The year 2018 is largely seen as one that will remain challenging to Malaysia’s breweries, but higher disposable income and the upcoming World Cup 2018 in Russia will most likely support the sector’s earnings in the new year, according to TA Securities Holdings Bhd senior investment analyst Tan Kam Meng, The Edge Financial Daily reported on December 28.
“Note that due to the time difference between Malaysia and Russia, we can expect one match to kick off at 8pm Malaysian time, every day, during the event,” said Tan in an email to The Edge Financial Daily, who foresees that the largest global football event held every four years will spur beer consumption worldwide.
Though Tan does not expect any increase in sin taxes — the common term for taxes levied on alcohol and cigarette players — he said 2018 will still remain challenging, due mainly to the rise of contrabands.
Beer excise duty rose to RM175 per 100% volume per litre on March 1, 2016, from RM7.40 per litre previously, while the 15% ad valorem (according to value) tax was removed.

Vietnam: Prime Minister urges to keep Saigon Beer brand name unchanged
|
The Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Industry and Trade to keep Saigon Beer brand name unchanged, VietNamNet Bridge reported on December 26, citing a representative of the Business Finance Department under the Ministry of Finance.
Saigon Beer is the brand name of Saigon Alcohol Beer and Beverages Corporation (Sabeco) whose over 53 percent stake has recently been sold to Vietnam Beverage which belongs to ThaiBev Company.
At a press conference on state-owned enterprises (SOEs) equitization, divestment and restructuring in 2017, Mr. Dang Quyet Tien, head of the Business Finance Department, said that in many countries brand names were uneasy to lose.
The government does not need to hold capital for keeping brand names, but the importance was that those brand names must survive, he added.
Some opinions said that foreign investors might have deliberately dodged the Vietnam’s Investment Law to indirectly own over 50 percent of capital in the Sabeco auction.
In reply, Mr. Tien said that it should not distinguish domestic and overseas factors because some foreign companies had not directly invested in Vietnam but had enterprises established in the country, so they should be treated as Vietnamese firms.
Still he said it was necessary to amend some current laws to avoid the

Ukraine: Barley stocks amount to 1.74 mln tonnes as of December 1

As of December 1, 2017 Ukraine’s barley reserves amounted to 1.74 million tonnes, which is 637.5 thousand tonnes less than the same indicator in 2016 (2.38 million tonnes), UkrAgroConsult reported on December 28.
The State Statistics Service of Ukraine informs that the highest reserves are at the enterprises of Odessa (321.4 thousand tonnes), Khmelnitsky (165.1 thousand tonnes) and Ternopil (133.1 thousand tonnes) regions.
It is noted that the lowest barley reserves are at the enterprises of Zakarpattia (0.7 thousand tonnes), Chernivtsi (8.9 thousand tonnes) and Volyn (17.8 thousand tonnes) regions.
Earlier it was reported that Ukraine in January-November 2017 exported 4.78 million tonnes of barley worth of USD 699.89 million.

Azerbaijan: Government approves increase of import excise rates on alcohol and cigarettes
|
The Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan has approved new excise tax rates on imported goods, which will come into force on January 22, 2018, AzerNews reported on December 25.
In particular, the excise on malt beer imported to Azerbaijan will be 1.7 manats [$1] per litre, wines from fresh grapes, including fortified wines; grape must - 3.5 manats [$2.06] per litre, sparkling wines - 5 manats [$2.94] per litre, and whiskeys - 10 manats [$5.88] per litre.
For import of whiskey, vodka and liqueur, the excise tax is set at the level of 10 manats [$5.88] per 1 litre.
By the decision of the Cabinet, excises for the import of cigars were set at 20 manats [$11.77] per 1,000 pieces, cigarettes - 12 manats [$7.06] for 1,000 pieces.
Earlier, Azerbaijan’s Finance Minister Samir Sharifov stated that the country’s government plans to double excise rates for the import of alcoholic beverages and tobacco products in 2018.
Such a decision was made due to the fact that a sharp reduction in the exchange rate of Azerbaijani manat against the U.S. dollar led to an increase in prices for imported alcohol and tobacco products, as well as to a reduction in excise tax rates in manat.

Thailand: Home-brew outlaws serving up delicious revolution in Thailand
|
At a riverside bar just outside Bangkok, a delicious revolution is underway, NZCity reported on December 28.
Every Saturday, Chit Beer microbrewery opens for beer lovers and those who want to learn the craft of craft beer.
"It's getting very, very popular now because when people know more about the concept, that yeah, we can make beer ourselves at home, [they're] excited," said Wichit Saiklao, better known as Chit.
But these weekly classes are an act of rebellion.
Home-brewing is illegal in Thailand.
To get a beer-making licence, Thais must be able to produce 100,000 litres a year and have $400,000 in the bank, which effectively shuts out small players.
The 1950 Liquors Act also protects the two giant conglomerates that dominate the cheap lager market — ThaiBev with its Chang (and the infamous "changover"), and Boon Rawd Brewery's Singha and Leo beer.
Thai craft brewers are forced to take their recipes to breweries overseas and then import their bottles back into Thailand, paying hefty tax.
