USA: Beer volume sales estimated to have declined by 0.4% last year
|
U.S. beer volume sales were roughly flat in 2017, according to retail data provider IRI Worldwide, Brewbound reported on January 16.
The market research firm, which tracks category-wide sales trends at off-premise retailers, reported that total U.S. beer dollar sales topped $34 billion in the firm’s multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) universe of stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military). Through December 31, U.S. beer volume sales decreased 0.4 percent while total beer dollar sales increased 1.2 percent.
Dollar sales of domestic premium brands (Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light and others), declined 2.9 percent (more than $398 million) to more than $13 billion while volume sales dipped 3.8 percent.
However, three segments — imports, craft beer and domestic super premiums — grew last year. Dollar sales of imported beer, the second largest segment, increased 8.4 percent to more than $6.5 billion.
Craft dollar sales increased 5.6 percent, to more than $4 billion, while volume sales increased 3.6 percent in 2017. And dollar sales of domestic super premiums — such as Michelob Ultra — increased 11.3 percent, to more than $2.5 billion, while volume sales were up 9.4 percent.

Canada: Beer remains Canada’s most popular alcoholic drink despite decline in per capita consumption
|
Despite a decline in per capita consumption, beer remains Canada’s most popular alcoholic beverage and accounted for C$13.6 bln (US$11 bln) in economic activity in 2016.
Canadians bought the equivalent of 223 bottles of beer per person at beer and liquor stores and other retail stores, while the beer economy supported nearly 149,000 jobs in the country.
Federal and provincial taxes and liquor board mark-ups account for nearly 47% of the average beer price in Canada, with beer consumption generating C$5.7 bln (US$5 bln) in annual tax revenues for federal, provincial, territorial and municipal governments.
The figures have been released by The Conference Board of Canada, which has analyzed the economic footprint of the beer industry in a study funded by Beer Canada.
Per capita consumption of beer in Canada has declined by 10% over the past ten years, thanks to demographic changes, increased competition from other alcoholic beverages such as wine, and competition from non-alcoholic drinks such as coffee and tea.
Economic factors such as higher input costs and increases in provincial beer taxes have also contributed to the decline.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation reports 24% jump in Q3 revenue
|
Zimbabwe’s Delta Corporation says revenue jumped 24 percent for the quarter to December 31, 2017 and 9 percent for the nine months due to strong demand on renewed hope of economic recovery after political changes that occurred in November last year, The Herald reported on January 16.
In a trading update for the last three months and nine months to December 31, 2017, Delta said that lager beer recorded a spike in demand with the volume growing by 36 percent above prior year for the quarter and 20 percent for the nine months.
“The period (after November 21, 2017) was characterised by significant political developments, which gave rise to renewed optimism for an economic recovery. This manifested through increased consumer spending and market liquidity,” the company said.
Former President Robert Mugabe resigned on November 21, 2017 after 37 years in power, following military intervention on November 14, to rescue a fast deteriorating socio-economic and political situation.
The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange’s biggest counter by market capitalisation said that the strong demand resulted in gaps in meeting consumer preferences of specific brands and packs owing to this unforeseen sharp, albeit welcome, increase in demand.

Russia: Healthcare Minister says alcohol consumption in Russia is down by 80%
|
Alcohol consumption in Russia decreased by 80 per cent over the past five to seven years, while smoking became less popular among adults by 22 per cent, Healthcare Minister, Veronika Skvortsova, said on January 16.
“We have been able to lower alcohol consumption per capita by 80 per cent within the period and increased the number of people engaged in sports activities by over 40 percent,” Skvortsova was quoted as saying by the Premium Times.
The minister noted that smoking decreased by 40 per cent among adults and by three times among children and adolescents in the same period.
NAN reports that alcohol consumption in Russia stays among the highest in the world. According to the WHO in a 2011 report, Russia’s annual per capita consumption was about 15.76 litres, the fourth highest volume in Europe.
According to officials, Russia currently implements a variety of anti-alcoholism measures (banning spirits and beer trade at night, raising taxes, and others).
According to medical officials, these policies have resulted in a considerable fall of alcohol consumption volumes, to 13.5 litres by 2013, with wine and beer overtaking spirits as the main source of beverage alcohol.

India: Carlsberg to start brewing at new Karnataka brewery in about fortnight’s time
|
Carlsberg, one of world’s leading brewers, will soon begin manufacturing beer at its facility in Nanjangud, state of Karnataka, India, The Hindu reported on January 17.
Ramakrishna Gowda, Joint Director of District Industries Centre (DIC), Mysuru, said Carlsberg has set up its plant on 25 acres in Himmavu by investing about Rs. 60 crore.
Though the plant was reported to have an annual production capacity of 80 million litres per day, Mr. Gowda said the company plans to start production on a small scale.
Sources in Carlsberg said they will begin production in about a fortnight’s time as they had just got license for the brewery. Production will be limited to four different brands in bottles.
The plant is expected to employ about 300 people.
The facility in Nanjangud will be Carlsberg’s 10th plant in India and the third in south India after Chennai and Hyderabad.

Canada: Beer Canada calls for stopping plans of annual tax hike increase
|
A trade association for Canada's beer industry wants the federal government to stop its plan to annually increase a tax on the alcoholic drink, The Canadian Press reported on January 16.
Beer Canada has launched a new campaign calling on Canadians to sign a petition asking Finance Minister Bill Morneau to axe the escalating beer tax.
In last year's federal budget, the Liberal government announced it wanted to annually adjust the beer excise tax by indexing it to the consumer price index with the first inflationary adjustment coming this April.
Beer Canada, which represents 50 brewers who make more than 90 per cent of domestic beer consumed in the country, says 47 per cent of the price of beer in Canada is already tax.
The association says future tax increases would further hurt an industry facing challenging times as beer consumption is declining in Canada.
The Department of Finance Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

New Zealand: 12-pack beer category could become the new battleground in New Zealand

Independent brewers have elbowed their way onto New Zealand’s supermarket shelves in the last decade, but the “dozen” remains firmly in the grip of the big breweries. The Newsroom looks at whether that dominance could soon end.
If you head into the chiller section of a bottle store or supermarket, chances are it will be filled with boxes of mainstream lager.
The blue and gold of Speight’s, the green of Steinlager, the white cardboard of Stella Artois and the orange of Tui have long dominated the bulk beer choices of New Zealanders.
But the beer industry as a whole has shifted dramatically in the past decade.
Small independent breweries have proliferated, raising the quality of beer and introducing styles never before seen in New Zealand.
The rise of what is often dubbed ‘craft beer’ expanded choices for consumers, although the nation has actually been drinking less in recent years.
That decline appears to perhaps be turning around, looking at the figures.
Stats NZ’s annual report on alcohol consumption will be released next month, but data for the year ended December 2016 showed the total volume of beer available rose 3.78 percent to 292 million litres.

UK: Asahi relaunching Asahi Super Dry beer in the UK
|
Asahi UK is boosting its flagship Japanese lager brand with the relaunch of Asahi Super Dry, brewed according to its original recipe, The Grocer reported on January 15.
The 5.2% beer was previously contract brewed by Shepherd Neame in Britain, but will now be produced ‘in-house’ by Asahi UK in Padua, Italy. New stock with revamped packs rolled out on January 15.
The change was the first opportunity for Brits to “taste Asahi Super Dry in its true form” said Asahi UK MD Tim Clay. “Its unique dry, crisp taste with a quick clean finish, known as karakuchi, has undoubtedly been fundamental to this beer’s success”.
Clay added it was “incredibly important” for Asahi UK “to ensure we brought that same authentic taste to the UK market. Therefore, significant investment and comprehensive taste testing have taken place in collaboration with our Japanese colleagues.”
The brand hopes to grow distribution with the relaunch, and has secured fresh listings in Waitrose.
Marketing would “reflect the Japanese roots and authenticity of the brand in a contemporary manner, utilising various forward-thinking elements of Japanese culture that are tangible and accessible in the western world”.

Ireland: Guinness launches its first non-alcoholic craft lager in Ireland
|
Guinness has introduced its first non-alcoholic craft lager in Ireland as it looks to cash in on a growing consumer trend for cutting back or giving up on drinking altogether, the Irish Times reported on January 17.
Pure Brew has been developed at Open Gate, Diageo’s experimental brewery at St James’s Gate in Dublin. The full-flavoured lager, which will be rolled out to 250 pubs in the capital this month, will be available nationwide from March.
Non-alcoholic beers typically start life as full-strength beers with the alcohol eventually removed through evaporation, a technique that often interferes with the flavour and character. Pure Brew however, which is the result of two years of experimentation, has been developed using a special yeast strain so that it is a fully-fermented beer. The result is a hoppy lager with fruity aromas and a hint of citrus flavour.
“Consumers shouldn’t have to compromise on flavour just because they want to moderate,” lead brewer John Casey told The Irish Times. “With Pure Brew we wanted to give people a taste experience comparable to regular beer.”

UK: Spring barley 2018 area forecast up at expense of winter barley
|
Results from the AHDB Early Bird Survey of cropping intentions for harvest 2018 indicate a decline in winter plantings in favour of spring varieties, Farmers’ Guardian reported on January 16.
This is most notable in northern and western regions of the UK where wetter weather tended to hamper winter drilling, according to AHDB.
For winter barley, declines in area have been observed across all English regions in the survey, which is undertaken by the Andersons Centre, assisted by AICC and other agronomists.
For the two largest English production regions for winter barley, the East and Yorkshire and the Humber, area is estimated to fall by 13 per cent and eight per cent, respectively.
The total area surveyed has increased substantially compared to previous years covering 490,000ha (1,210,300 acres) of arable land across all regions of Great Britain.
In northern regions, there is a notable increase in spring barley planting intentions. A combined figure for North West and Merseyside, and the North East shows a 38 per cent forecast increase for spring barley plantings compared with last year.
In Scotland, the spring barley area is expected to increase by 12 per cent compared with the 2017 harvest area, although the sample size is small.

Spring malting barley Planet is set to take over as the most popular variety in the UK this season mirroring similar expected success across the rest of Europe, FarmersWeekly reported on January 15.
The variety favoured by the brewing industry is set to take 25-30% of the certified seed market this spring, up from 19% in 2017, and so is likely to topple the old brewer’s favourite Propino, which had a 23% market share last year.
Planet yields 105% on the current AHDB Recommended List ahead of Propino at 100% and its consistency and quality is likely to see it take top spot among spring barley growers, says Chris Black, cereal product manager-international, at the variety’s breeder RAGT.
“For 2018, Planet will be the number one spring barley variety in Europe, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland and number two in Germany,” he told Farmers Weekly.
The European maltsters like the variety and it is being used by big European brewers such as Heineken and Carlsberg, while it could do well in Australia and the Ukraine to become a truly international spring barley variety, Mr Black added.

USA: Hops production up 20% last year

The US hops production grew 20 percent last year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its annual crop production report on January 12.
Production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2017 totaled a record high 104 million pounds, up 20 percent from the 2016 crop of 87.1 million pounds, USDA reported.
Combined area harvested for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2017 totaled a record high 53,282 acres, up 5 percent from the 2016 level of 50,857 acres. Harvested acreage increased in all three States; 24 percent in Idaho, 3 percent in Washington, and 1 percent in Oregon. United States hop yield, at 1,959 pounds per acre, increased 246 pounds from a year ago.
Washington produced 75 percent of the United States hop crop for 2017; while Idaho accounted for 13 percent and Oregon accounted for 11 percent. The 2017 crop year marked the first time Idaho hop production surpassed production in Oregon.
Cascade, Centennial, Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, and Mosaic were the six leading varieties in Washington, accounting for 54 percent of the State’s hop production.
