USA: Beer volume sales estimated to have declined by 0.4% last year
|
U.S. beer volume sales were roughly flat in 2017, according to retail data provider IRI Worldwide, Brewbound reported on January 16.
The market research firm, which tracks category-wide sales trends at off-premise retailers, reported that total U.S. beer dollar sales topped $34 billion in the firm’s multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) universe of stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military). Through December 31, U.S. beer volume sales decreased 0.4 percent while total beer dollar sales increased 1.2 percent.
Dollar sales of domestic premium brands (Budweiser, Bud Light, Miller Lite, Coors Light and others), declined 2.9 percent (more than $398 million) to more than $13 billion while volume sales dipped 3.8 percent.
However, three segments — imports, craft beer and domestic super premiums — grew last year. Dollar sales of imported beer, the second largest segment, increased 8.4 percent to more than $6.5 billion.
Craft dollar sales increased 5.6 percent, to more than $4 billion, while volume sales increased 3.6 percent in 2017. And dollar sales of domestic super premiums — such as Michelob Ultra — increased 11.3 percent, to more than $2.5 billion, while volume sales were up 9.4 percent.
Meanwhile, sales of domestic sub-premium beer, flavored malt beverages, cider and non-alcoholic beer were all

Canada: Beer remains Canada’s most popular alcoholic drink despite decline in per capita consumption
|
Despite a decline in per capita consumption, beer remains Canada’s most popular alcoholic beverage and accounted for C$13.6 bln (US$11 bln) in economic activity in 2016.
Canadians bought the equivalent of 223 bottles of beer per person at beer and liquor stores and other retail stores, while the beer economy supported nearly 149,000 jobs in the country.
Federal and provincial taxes and liquor board mark-ups account for nearly 47% of the average beer price in Canada, with beer consumption generating C$5.7 bln (US$5 bln) in annual tax revenues for federal, provincial, territorial and municipal governments.
The figures have been released by The Conference Board of Canada, which has analyzed the economic footprint of the beer industry in a study funded by Beer Canada.
Per capita consumption of beer in Canada has declined by 10% over the past ten years, thanks to demographic changes, increased competition from other alcoholic beverages such as wine, and competition from non-alcoholic drinks such as coffee and tea.
Economic factors such as higher input costs and increases in provincial beer taxes have also contributed to the decline.
However, beer still makes up 40% of total alcohol sales through liquor boards and other retail outlets, making it the most popular alcoholic beverage

USA: Hops production up 20% last year
|
The US hops production grew 20 percent last year, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said in its annual crop production report on January 12.
Production for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2017 totaled a record high 104 million pounds, up 20 percent from the 2016 crop of 87.1 million pounds, USDA reported.
Combined area harvested for Idaho, Oregon, and Washington in 2017 totaled a record high 53,282 acres, up 5 percent from the 2016 level of 50,857 acres. Harvested acreage increased in all three States; 24 percent in Idaho, 3 percent in Washington, and 1 percent in Oregon. United States hop yield, at 1,959 pounds per acre, increased 246 pounds from a year ago.
Washington produced 75 percent of the United States hop crop for 2017; while Idaho accounted for 13 percent and Oregon accounted for 11 percent. The 2017 crop year marked the first time Idaho hop production surpassed production in Oregon.
Cascade, Centennial, Zeus, Simcoe, Citra, and Mosaic were the six leading varieties in Washington, accounting for 54 percent of the State’s hop production. In Idaho, Zeus, Cascade, Amarillo, Mosaic, Citra, and Chinook were the major varieties, accounting for 69 percent of the State’s hop production. In Oregon, Nugget, Cascade,

Canada: Beer Canada calls for stopping plans of annual tax hike increase
|
A trade association for Canada's beer industry wants the federal government to stop its plan to annually increase a tax on the alcoholic drink, The Canadian Press reported on January 16.
Beer Canada has launched a new campaign calling on Canadians to sign a petition asking Finance Minister Bill Morneau to axe the escalating beer tax.
In last year's federal budget, the Liberal government announced it wanted to annually adjust the beer excise tax by indexing it to the consumer price index with the first inflationary adjustment coming this April.
Beer Canada, which represents 50 brewers who make more than 90 per cent of domestic beer consumed in the country, says 47 per cent of the price of beer in Canada is already tax.
The association says future tax increases would further hurt an industry facing challenging times as beer consumption is declining in Canada.
The Department of Finance Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

USA, PA: Isle of Que Brewing Company to open its doors in Selinsgrove on January 19
|
A group of friends have taken their love of craft beer and turned it into the Isle of Que Brewing Company that will open for business Friday, January 19 at 6 University Ave. in Selinsgrove, the Sunbury Daily Item reported.
For years, Mike Salter, Jeremy Boyer, Jason Kinney and Sean Walburn have been brewing beer and selling the ale at festivals and other events. In the past year, Jerrel Boyer has joined them in the enterprise.
With an eye on opening a permanent outlet to serve the refreshment straight from the tap, the men launched a fundraising effort to renovate the University Avenue space and purchase brewing equipment about three years ago.
"We did it all ourselves," said Kinney, standing inside the cozy bar that accommodates 61 people and features two large screen televisions and items from their neighborhood, Isle of Que, including a bicycle affixed to a wall and a 17-foot aluminum canoe hanging above the bar area.
Walburn thought the canoe might be "obnoxious" until several visitors expressed surprise when it was pointed out. "People don't even notice it," he said.
The establishment also features a stage where local musicians will provide live entertainment on occasion. Runaway Stroller will perform on opening night.

USA, NY: The sixth brewery could open in Rochester by the end of the year
|
Rochester could be home to a six-pack of craft breweries by the end of the year if all goes according to plan, Post-Bulletin reported on January 10.
Adam Fredericksen, former head brewer at Grand Rounds, said on January 9 he has plans to open what could be Rochester's sixth brewery after signing a lease to rent a building at 1929 Second St. SW. The building sits next to Tyrol Ski & Sports and will be renovated to include a tap room and brewery. The goal, Fredericksen said, is to open in the later part of the year.
"We now feel confident that the plan is going to move ahead and hopefully, people are as excited as we are," he said.
The news comes nearly three months after Steve Finnie, who also served as a head brewer at Grand Rounds, announced plans to open a fifth Rochester brewery, which is set to open at a 5,200-square-foot warehouse at 2031 14th St. NW.
Interestingly, both aspiring brewery business owners launched their professional beer-making careers at Grand Rounds (Fredericksen served under Finnie for a period of time at Grand Rounds), and have launched plans to open breweries since leaving Grand Rounds.
Fredericksen said he hasn't yet come up

Canada, NS: Off Track Brewing already open in Bedford
|
Allan MacKay has been brewing beer for 10 years. His beer production grew from a small bar fridge and eventually took over the main fridge in the house. He often hosted parties for friends, offering them beer from the taps in that fridge.
“People would start saying, ‘You should sell this,’” he says. “It’s easy to say that when you’re getting it for free.”
Now MacKay, along with friends Jon Saunders and Matt Scott, are brewing their own beer at Off Track Brewing on Rocky Lake Drive in Bedford.
The brewery launched on Friday, Dec. 22, and had a busy start, even opening its doors on Christmas Day with about a dozen customers.
There are nine beers on tap, including a pale, a couple of IPAs and brown ale. They also brew a peanut butter stout inspired by a beer MacKay tried in Alberta.
“It’s been selling like crazy here,” MacKay says.
Eventually, they want to brew a cider, too.
Before they opened their doors, the trio spent hours on Skype planning their business. Those conversations often turned to other topics, such as Seinfeld or football, taking them off track from the conversation about the brewery. Those off-track conversations inspired the brewery’s name. It’s only coincidence the

USA, MN: Arbeiter Brewing aiming at fall opening in Minneapolis
|
Three Northern Brewer veterans and a brewer from Town Hall are working to bring a new brewery to life in South Minneapolis’ Longfellow neighborhood. This fall, Arbeiter Brewing (German for “worker”) will open in the former Harriet Brewing space on Minnehaha Avenue, The Growler reported on January 12.
Though they’re in the earliest stages of building out the 15-barrel brewery and 200-seat taproom, co-founders Juno Choi, Garth Blomberg, and Josh Voeltz are adamant that they want the neighborhood to define the brewery, not the other way around.
“I’m just excited for the doors to open, and to be able to have a canvas to paint the portrait we want to paint rather than going into something preexisting,” says Blomberg, who’s in charge of graphic design and marketing for the brewery.
This community-first ethos will also be reflected in the beer that head brewer Aaron Herman will be brewing. “We’re definitely very cognizant of [the fact that] we’re a brewery in the community, so we want to make sure that our beers are probably going to be somewhat fluid in terms of the styles that we tend to brew, based on what our community wants,” says Choi. “I think that’s really important for us,

Canada, AB: Sea Change Brewing launches in Edmonton, own brewery to follow soon
|
A new brewery opening soon in Edmonton has announced the release of its first brand, Canadian Beer News reported on January 11.
Sea Change Brewing has been founded by a group of local musicians led by Ian McIntosh, along with head brewer Taylor Falk, and is described as “an artist friendly and run business.”
Currently brewing elsewhere under contract while construction of its own facility is underway, Sea Change has entered the market with a Blonde Ale (5% abv, 18 IBU) that is described as follows:
Subtle malt flavours of bread and wheat are matched with a very accessible, slightly citrusy light hop profile. Finishes smooth, clean, and medium-dry. Easy-drinking and very approachable.
Future brands will include Pale Ale (5.5% abv, 30 IBU), Belgian Tripel (9.0% abv, 30 IBU), IPA (7.0% abv, 40 IBU), and Irish Red Ale (5.0% abv, 20 IBU).
Sea Change beer can currently be found on tap at select bars in Edmonton. The brewery and taproom/store is expected to open this spring, with packaged product to follow in the summer.

USA, IN: 18th Street Brewery planning to open distillery in Hammond
|
Region drinkers have a reason to raise a toast — the acclaimed 18th Street Brewery plans to open a distillery to make artisanal liquors, nwitimes.com reported.
Drew Fox's craft brewery at 5417 Oakley Ave. in downtown Hammond, which also has a taproom in the Miller section of Gary, released a rendering of the distillery it plans to open in downtown Hammond.
"The 18th Street Distillery coming spring of 2018 will be the first distillery in Hammond, Indiana, since prohibition," the craft brewery announced on its Facebook page. "More info to come in the following week."
18th Street creative director Joey Potts said more details were not immediately available but should be forthcoming.
As craft brewing has matured, many breweries have branched out by building distilleries, including Three Floyds, Dogfish Head, Anchor Brewing, Rogue, Ballast Point and New Holland Brewing.
"These guys were a godsend for us to move to downtown Hammond, which is near and dear to our hearts," Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott said. "A lot of people talk the talk, but they walk the walk. They wanted to move to downtown Hammond and for us just to get out of the way. It's an excellent restaurant and great brewery and now there will be

USA, NY: Saratoga Brewing Company shuts down
|
The Saratoga Brewing Company has shut down, The Daily Gazette reported on January 16.
A company official on site at the Saratoga Springs brewery said on January 16 that he could not discuss the situation until parent company Mendocino Brewing issues a statement, and he was not sure when that would be.
There was no answer at Mendocino’s headquarters in California on January 16, and the company's voicemail box was unable to accept messages.
Brooklyn-based Braven Brewing Co. described the situation in dire terms in an Instagram post saying Saratoga Brewing gave Braven 72 hours to remove its packaging materials, ingredients and finished beer from the Excelsior Avenue facility, where Braven’s beers were brewed under contract.
Braven said its employees drove up to the brewery to remove tens of thousands of dollars worth of kegs, caps, hops and beer from Saratoga Brewing. Braven indicated that Ipswich Ale Brewery in Massachusetts would be brewing Braven's beer in the future.
On January 16, Wachusett Brewing Company had a tanker truck on site, apparently conducting a similar evacuation.
"It's always a sad day when we see a business go out," Saratoga Springs Mayor Meg Kelly said. "The economic impact will be felt. Hopefully we can work to get them

USA, MI: Brass Ring Brewing debuts in Grand Rapids
|
Brass Ring Brewing held its ribbon-cutting and grand opening in Grand Rapids on Thursday, January 11. Beer lovers lined up about the building to the first ones in, WOODTV.com reported.
Though Grand Rapids is well known for its robust craft beer industry, Brass Ring is the first one in the growing Alger Heights business district.
You can visit Brass Ring Brewing on Eastern Avenue at Alger Street SE. In recent years, the building has housed an ice cream shop, a sandwich shop, a hot dog shop and a candy shop. So what’s going to make Brass Ring succeed?
“We’re going to be successful as a brewery here because of our neighborhood. We’re a very community-forward operation and we have designed the brewery for our community as a place for people to come and gather,” owner Chris Gibbons said.
In addition to promising “world-class beer,” Gibbons said the brewery will also have a menu of sharing plate options.
Seven beers were on tap on the opening night.

Canada, ON: Brick Brewing Co upgrades can production capacity of its Kitchener brewery
|
Ontario-based Brick Brewing Co has invested CAD 3.5 million ($2.8m) to upgrade the can production capacity of its brewery in Kitchener, Ontario, FoodBev.com reported on January 12.
The canning capacity of the brewery will double to 400,000 hectolitres annually once the upgrade has been completed, according to the company.
A new can filler and pasteuriser will be installed as part of the upgrade, and the new facilities will deliver a 15% reduction in natural gas usage, a 25% reduction in water usage and a 25% reduction in effluent discharge per hectoliter compared to current equipment.
Brick Brewing Co claims the upgrade plans will fuel the continued growth of the business and improve the competitiveness of the company.
Russell Tabata, Brick’s chief operating officer said: “The project installation will be completed in May and we expect to see the upgraded can line operating at full capacity by the end of June.
“We will build inventory in advance of the project to ensure that there are no disruptions in our supply chain and we continue to meet our internal and customer’s production needs while the project is being implemented.”
George Croft, Brick Brewing president and chief executive officer added: “Each year we establish an operating plan that reflects

USA, VA: B Chord Brewery quietly opens near Round Hill
|
A farm is opening near Round Hill, but you’ll probably go for the beer, Loudoun Now reported on January 12.
B Chord Brewery has quietly opened on Williams Gap Road, but while the cold weather has delayed putting up fence posts and hop yards, the beer is already flowing for a crowd of locals. The farm brewery’s founders, Rose and Marty Dougherty and Aaron Gilman, say next come the cows and the crops.
“The idea is to just restore the property to agricultural use,” Gilman said. “If you look back at the historical photographs, you’ll see it used to be, I believe, a hay field. It’s a really neat property.”
After protracted regulatory battles with locals around Bluemont that sparked in early 2015, B Chord was forced to relocate to the other side of Rt. 7. Before B Chord bought the 64-acre property on Williams Gap Road, a developer had won approval to build seven houses on it. Instead, Gilman said, as soon as the ground thaws, he’ll be driving in fence posts to bring in a herd of about 25 cattle. They’ll also be growing hops and a butterfly garden.
“We’re focused on being a farm first, a farm brewery first,” Marty Dougherty

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation reports 24% jump in Q3 revenue
|
Zimbabwe’s Delta Corporation says revenue jumped 24 percent for the quarter to December 31, 2017 and 9 percent for the nine months due to strong demand on renewed hope of economic recovery after political changes that occurred in November last year, The Herald reported on January 16.
In a trading update for the last three months and nine months to December 31, 2017, Delta said that lager beer recorded a spike in demand with the volume growing by 36 percent above prior year for the quarter and 20 percent for the nine months.
“The period (after November 21, 2017) was characterised by significant political developments, which gave rise to renewed optimism for an economic recovery. This manifested through increased consumer spending and market liquidity,” the company said.
Former President Robert Mugabe resigned on November 21, 2017 after 37 years in power, following military intervention on November 14, to rescue a fast deteriorating socio-economic and political situation.
The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange’s biggest counter by market capitalisation said that the strong demand resulted in gaps in meeting consumer preferences of specific brands and packs owing to this unforeseen sharp, albeit welcome, increase in demand.

UK: Spring barley 2018 area forecast up at expense of winter barley
|
Results from the AHDB Early Bird Survey of cropping intentions for harvest 2018 indicate a decline in winter plantings in favour of spring varieties, Farmers’ Guardian reported on January 16.
This is most notable in northern and western regions of the UK where wetter weather tended to hamper winter drilling, according to AHDB.
For winter barley, declines in area have been observed across all English regions in the survey, which is undertaken by the Andersons Centre, assisted by AICC and other agronomists.
For the two largest English production regions for winter barley, the East and Yorkshire and the Humber, area is estimated to fall by 13 per cent and eight per cent, respectively.
The total area surveyed has increased substantially compared to previous years covering 490,000ha (1,210,300 acres) of arable land across all regions of Great Britain.
In northern regions, there is a notable increase in spring barley planting intentions. A combined figure for North West and Merseyside, and the North East shows a 38 per cent forecast increase for spring barley plantings compared with last year.
In Scotland, the spring barley area is expected to increase by 12 per cent compared with the 2017 harvest area, although the sample size is small.

Russia: Healthcare Minister says alcohol consumption in Russia is down by 80%
|
Alcohol consumption in Russia decreased by 80 per cent over the past five to seven years, while smoking became less popular among adults by 22 per cent, Healthcare Minister, Veronika Skvortsova, said on January 16.
“We have been able to lower alcohol consumption per capita by 80 per cent within the period and increased the number of people engaged in sports activities by over 40 percent,” Skvortsova was quoted as saying by the Premium Times.
The minister noted that smoking decreased by 40 per cent among adults and by three times among children and adolescents in the same period.
NAN reports that alcohol consumption in Russia stays among the highest in the world. According to the WHO in a 2011 report, Russia’s annual per capita consumption was about 15.76 litres, the fourth highest volume in Europe.
According to officials, Russia currently implements a variety of anti-alcoholism measures (banning spirits and beer trade at night, raising taxes, and others).
According to medical officials, these policies have resulted in a considerable fall of alcohol consumption volumes, to 13.5 litres by 2013, with wine and beer overtaking spirits as the main source of beverage alcohol.
These levels are comparable with European Union averages. Alcohol producers claim that falling legal

UK: Spring malting barley Planet to take over as the most popular variety in the UK
|
Spring malting barley Planet is set to take over as the most popular variety in the UK this season mirroring similar expected success across the rest of Europe, FarmersWeekly reported on January 15.
The variety favoured by the brewing industry is set to take 25-30% of the certified seed market this spring, up from 19% in 2017, and so is likely to topple the old brewer’s favourite Propino, which had a 23% market share last year.
Planet yields 105% on the current AHDB Recommended List ahead of Propino at 100% and its consistency and quality is likely to see it take top spot among spring barley growers, says Chris Black, cereal product manager-international, at the variety’s breeder RAGT.
“For 2018, Planet will be the number one spring barley variety in Europe, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, Ireland and number two in Germany,” he told Farmers Weekly.
The European maltsters like the variety and it is being used by big European brewers such as Heineken and Carlsberg, while it could do well in Australia and the Ukraine to become a truly international spring barley variety, Mr Black added.

India: Carlsberg to start brewing at new Karnataka brewery in about fortnight’s time
|
Carlsberg, one of world’s leading brewers, will soon begin manufacturing beer at its facility in Nanjangud, state of Karnataka, India, The Hindu reported on January 17.
Ramakrishna Gowda, Joint Director of District Industries Centre (DIC), Mysuru, said Carlsberg has set up its plant on 25 acres in Himmavu by investing about Rs. 60 crore.
Though the plant was reported to have an annual production capacity of 80 million litres per day, Mr. Gowda said the company plans to start production on a small scale.
Sources in Carlsberg said they will begin production in about a fortnight’s time as they had just got license for the brewery. Production will be limited to four different brands in bottles.
The plant is expected to employ about 300 people.
The facility in Nanjangud will be Carlsberg’s 10th plant in India and the third in south India after Chennai and Hyderabad.

New Zealand: 12-pack beer category could become the new battleground in New Zealand
|
Independent brewers have elbowed their way onto New Zealand’s supermarket shelves in the last decade, but the “dozen” remains firmly in the grip of the big breweries. The Newsroom looks at whether that dominance could soon end.
If you head into the chiller section of a bottle store or supermarket, chances are it will be filled with boxes of mainstream lager.
The blue and gold of Speight’s, the green of Steinlager, the white cardboard of Stella Artois and the orange of Tui have long dominated the bulk beer choices of New Zealanders.
But the beer industry as a whole has shifted dramatically in the past decade.
Small independent breweries have proliferated, raising the quality of beer and introducing styles never before seen in New Zealand.
The rise of what is often dubbed ‘craft beer’ expanded choices for consumers, although the nation has actually been drinking less in recent years.
That decline appears to perhaps be turning around, looking at the figures.
Stats NZ’s annual report on alcohol consumption will be released next month, but data for the year ended December 2016 showed the total volume of beer available rose 3.78 percent to 292 million litres.
Leading this revival has been beer over 5% ABV, which rose 17 percent

UK: Asahi relaunching Asahi Super Dry beer in the UK
|
Asahi UK is boosting its flagship Japanese lager brand with the relaunch of Asahi Super Dry, brewed according to its original recipe, The Grocer reported on January 15.
The 5.2% beer was previously contract brewed by Shepherd Neame in Britain, but will now be produced ‘in-house’ by Asahi UK in Padua, Italy. New stock with revamped packs rolled out on January 15.
The change was the first opportunity for Brits to “taste Asahi Super Dry in its true form” said Asahi UK MD Tim Clay. “Its unique dry, crisp taste with a quick clean finish, known as karakuchi, has undoubtedly been fundamental to this beer’s success”.
Clay added it was “incredibly important” for Asahi UK “to ensure we brought that same authentic taste to the UK market. Therefore, significant investment and comprehensive taste testing have taken place in collaboration with our Japanese colleagues.”
The brand hopes to grow distribution with the relaunch, and has secured fresh listings in Waitrose.
Marketing would “reflect the Japanese roots and authenticity of the brand in a contemporary manner, utilising various forward-thinking elements of Japanese culture that are tangible and accessible in the western world”.

Ireland: Guinness launches its first non-alcoholic craft lager in Ireland
|
Guinness has introduced its first non-alcoholic craft lager in Ireland as it looks to cash in on a growing consumer trend for cutting back or giving up on drinking altogether, the Irish Times reported on January 17.
Pure Brew has been developed at Open Gate, Diageo’s experimental brewery at St James’s Gate in Dublin. The full-flavoured lager, which will be rolled out to 250 pubs in the capital this month, will be available nationwide from March.
Non-alcoholic beers typically start life as full-strength beers with the alcohol eventually removed through evaporation, a technique that often interferes with the flavour and character. Pure Brew however, which is the result of two years of experimentation, has been developed using a special yeast strain so that it is a fully-fermented beer. The result is a hoppy lager with fruity aromas and a hint of citrus flavour.
“Consumers shouldn’t have to compromise on flavour just because they want to moderate,” lead brewer John Casey told The Irish Times. “With Pure Brew we wanted to give people a taste experience comparable to regular beer.”
Mr Casey said all the development for the new lager was carried out at Open Gate. Other beers to make it to market from the
