USA: Major whisky brands celebrate strong year 2017
|
With consumers eagerly exploring across multiple brown spirits categories, it comes as little surprise that 2017 was a strong year for the U.S. market’s major whisk(e)y brands. As the connoisseur set continues to seek out new upscale launches and limited releases, leading players like Crown Royal, Jack Daniel’s, Jim Beam and others are broadening their appeal and winning new drinkers with flavored expressions, the Shanken News Daily reported on January 18.
Six whisk(e)y labels ranked among the top 25 spirits brands in the U.S. for 2017, and all of them were on the upswing, according to Impact Databank. Brown-Forman’s Jack Daniel’s continues to lead the market at 6.46 million cases, up 3% last year, including its flavored varieties. In the six months through October, net sales for Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey (+6%), Tennessee Honey (+8%), Tennessee Fire (+14%), and the brand’s RTD offerings (+15%) were all up strongly, with Tennessee Fire gaining traction in the on-premise. In September, Brown-Forman debuted Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Rye ($27) in a bid to garner a piece of the action in the fast-growing rye whiskey segment.

USA, MD: Elk River Brewery expected to be open for business in time for summer
|
There’s something brewing on Main Street in Elkton, the Cecil Whig reported on January 17.
Scott Beiber is eagerly watching the beer mixture fermenting in the basement of what is becoming Elk River Brewery at 112 E. Main St. For now, he’s working with a small system that turns out a couple gallons of heady brew. What used to be a jewelry store and an energy company is being transformed into the brewery, which will feature tastings as well as beer to go.
“You can purchase growlers here, or bring your own. We’ll be able to fill growlers,” said Brad Carillo, who owns Elk River Brewery with his wife, Jessica.
For the uninitiated, a growler is a heavy glass bottle into which beer is tapped for consumption off site. A typical growler holds 64 ounces of beer. Elk River Brewery will sell beer for tasting too, so fans of brew can experience Beiber’s efforts.
“The cool thing about what we’re doing is we can test experimental beer throughout the year,” Brad Carillo said.
That would include flavors brewed using as much local product as possible.

USA, IA: Dimensional Brewing Company hoping to launch in Dubuque around Thanksgiving
|
The owners of a new brewery in Dubuque hope to open their doors around Thanksgiving, according to partner Tom Rauen, KCRG reported on January 16.
Dimensional Brewing Company will be located at 67 Main Street.
Rauen said he and his five partners have been working on the brewery for quite a while and closed on the building January 12.
They've already had some private tasting events, and plan to do a monthly tasting event until their official opening. Rauen said they want to get their product out there and to get feedback from customers. The next event is at Brewfest on Ice in February. Although they can't serve beer until they obtain a license, people may meet the brewers and ask questions.
Once open, the brewery will also serve wood fire pizza.
Rauen said he and his partners love craft beer as a hobby. They've all visited other breweries and beer fests. Now they're taking that passion and turning it into something they can share with others, according to Rauen.
The partners plan to offer something for everyone, including simpler beers, but they want to get complex with the tastes and "push the envelope" trying new brews.

USA, NH: Smuttynose Brewing Company to be sold at bank auction on March 9
|
A 24-year-old New Hampshire brewing company is seeking a buyer, saying the explosion of microbreweries has led to changing dynamics in the marketplace, The Boston Globe reported on January 18.
Smuttynose Brewing Company says it’s scheduled to be sold at a bank auction on March 9. It employs 68 people and generates more than $10 million in revenue annually.
The sale includes the Smuttynose brand, its facility on the historic Towle Farm in Hampton, and Hayseed Restaurant located next to the brewery on 13 acres.
Smuttynose says the brewery is capable of producing 75,000 barrels a year. However, in the last year it has been running at 50 percent capacity.
Owner Peter Egelston says the company’s financial models were based on 20 year of consistent growth. He said as turmoil in the marketplace stabilizes, Smuttynose can regain its footing with a major infusion of capital.

Canada, NB: Four Rivers Brewing opens for business in Bathurst
|
A new brewery located in a former car dealership in Bathurst, New Brunswick has announced that it has opened for business, Canadian Beer News reported on January 15.
Four Rivers Brewing has been established by Chris Legacy and several of his family members, including brother Stephen Legacy, father René Legacy, and uncle René Landry. The brewery name pays tribute to the four rivers – Tetagouche, Middle, Little, and Nepisiguit – that flow in the city’s harbour.
The brewery opened for the first time this past on January 12th, and has launched with two core brands, American Pale Ale and American Amber Ale, available by the glass and growler. Rotating seasonal brands are planned to be tapped in coming weeks.
Four Rivers Brewing is located at 335 Murray Avenue in Bathurst, and is open from 12:00 noon to 6:00 PM on Monday to Wednesday, and 12:00 noon to 8:00 on Thursday to Saturday.

USA, CO: Mountain Cowboy Brewing Company holds its grand opening in Frederick
|
A new brewery and coffee shop celebrated its grand opening last weekend at Mountain Cowboy Brewing Company's location at 318 Fifth St., Frederick, the Longmont Times-Call reported on January 15.
The brewery currently offers nine beers on tap with more coming later this month, owner Ron Yovich said. Mountain Cowboy also serves food and a variety of coffee products.
Yovich and his wife Michelle Yovich also own Ella J Farms, a hops-growing operation near Longmont.

USA, NJ: Hidden Sands Brewing Co. already open in Egg Harbor Township
|
People packed Egg Harbor Township’s newest brewery, Hidden Sands Brewing Co. on Washington Avenue, on Sunday, January 14 for its opening weekend, the Shore News Today reports.
The brewery features one tasting room upstairs and another downstairs, both of which serve a variety of craft beers in pints or sample flights.
Managing partner John Cipriani said the name comes from the 800-foot deep Sands aquifer, which the company bored down to draw pure water that needs no treating or processing before the brewing starts.

USA, NY: Sloop Brewing Co. to expand by moving into new brewery
|
The Hudson Valley’s Sloop Brewing Co. announced they will be expanding and relocating their brewery to the former IBM campus in East Fishkill. Originally founded in Dutchess County, Sloop’s new 26,000 square foot facility will allow them to greatly increase production, expand their footprint in the Hudson Valley with multiple tasting room locations, and help revitalize the former East Fishkill plant, Brewbound reported on January 15.
“The new brewery will allow us to increase production and still focus on our beer with the same love and care as always,” said Justin Taylor, Sloop’s brewmaster and cofounder. “With our new 120 barrel tanks we can make enough beer to be in bars and stores throughout the Northeast – but we’ll still have the 30 barrel tanks, to keep making small-batch beer, hone our craft, and try new things like we’ve always been proud to do.”
Sloop Brewing will be one of the first tenants in the Dutchess County iPark project, which hopes to repurpose the former IBM plant as a mixed-use food, retail, and hotel hub, projected to add up to 1,000 jobs to the local economy.

EU: Malting barley prices slightly down on lack of demand
|
Lack of demand from the brewing and malting industry has led to lower malting barley prices on the EU markets this week, GrainCom said in their weekly update.
On the flip side, there is a lot of spot execution happening and it is noteworthy that long-term supply contracts are called in much earlier than in ‘normal’ years, the industry observers report.
Stocks of malt are not big in Europe, and the GrainCom analysts expect that procurement needs will pick up in the non-to-distant future.
Feed barley market remains well supported in Europe in view of renewed demand from Iran, China and short covering of sales to Saudi. It’s unclear, yet, what will be the likely origin for the last 1 mln tonnes which was bought for delivery LH Feb/March last weekend.

India: United Breweries share sale by ED provides Heineken with opportunity to increase stake in the brewer
|
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is all set to sell a large chunk of unpledged shares owned by Vijay Mallya in United Breweries, to raise more than Rs 4,000 crore, or nearly half of the money owed by the liquor baron to lenders, The Times Now reported on January 19.
ED has secured custody of 4 crore unpledged shares, constituting about 15.2 per cent stake, owned by beleaguered tycoon Vijay Mallya in UBL.
The shares were transferred to ED by the Stock Holding Corporation of India under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), reports the Economic Times citing two people with knowledge of the plan. The remaining 27 lakh shares are expected to be transferred soon. Mallya did not respond to emailed questions.
Vijay Mallya owns 29.46 per cent in UBL comprising 7.79 crore shares, out of which 3.52 crore constituting 45.17 per cent of his stake is pledged with lenders.
At present, Dutch brewer Heineken owns 43 per cent share in UBL and is keen to hike its stake further. This share sale by ED provides it with an opportunity.

UK: Super-premium beer market expected to continue to grow in the UK
|
The super-premium beer market will continue to grow in the UK as consumers’ willingness to spend more on “beer worth paying for” kicks up a level, according to Asahi UK’s new managing director Tim Clay.
The proliferation of premium drinks in the on-trade will play into the hands of breweries like Asahi UK and other alcohol suppliers in 2018 and the foreseeable future, Clay told The Morning Advertiser.
Clay officially became the head of Asahi UK this month, taking over from Gary Haigh who retired last year after overseeing the transfer of SABMiller's Miller Brands Unit to Asahi in 2016.
Asahi acquired the Miller Brands portfolio, which consists of Peroni, St Stefanus, Pilsner Urquell, Kozel, Tyskie, Lech and Asahi among others.
Asahi bought out Miller Brands when SABMiller was sold to global beer giant AB InBev in 2016.
The group’s premium beer portfolio currently accounts for roughly a sixth in value share of the premium beer market, said Clay.
The UK on-trade’s best-selling premium lager is Peroni Nastro Azzuro in both value and volume terms, according to The Morning Advertiser’s 2018 Drinks List: Top Brands To Stock.

South Korea: Beer imports threatening Korea’s biggest drinks maker
|
The sterling credit rating of South Korea’s biggest drinks maker may be in trouble, and one reason can be seen in the beer aisle at the Seoul train station branch of Lotte Mart hypermarket, Bloomberg reported on January 19.
Shoppers there can now buy a four-pack of foreign beers such as Guinness for 9,480 won ($9), not much more than the 7,520 won it would cost to buy four cans of Fitz Super Clear sold by Lotte Chilsung Beverage Co. Beer imports in Korea surged 45 percent to a record $263 million in 2017, and the price of overseas brews will likely head even lower as trade agreements get rid of duties.
The outlook for Lotte Chilsung’s AA+ grade was cut to negative by local credit rating firms, which cited rising leverage as the firm boosts investments in its beer operations, as well as its money-losing alcoholic beverage business. The implementation of free trade agreements has led to U.S. beer being charged no duties starting this month in South Korea and that will also be the case for European brews from July 1.

China: Brewers shares surge this year
|
China's stock market is so hot that you can sell investors cold beer in January, when it's freezing, Bloomberg reported on January 18.
Shares in Tsingtao Brewery Co. are up 15 percent this year in dollar terms while China Resources Beer Holdings Co. and Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co. are also beating the broader market.
Behind the surge are promises to raise prices. Earlier this month, Tsingtao said it was planning a cost hike for some but not all of its products, "with an average of such proposed price increase of under 5 percent." Days later, China Resources Beer said it too was moderately adjusting its prices to mitigate rising material costs.
Investors are betting the brewers can adjust prices without alienating consumers. In a nation where people are shelling out 1,499 yuan ($233) for a bottle of Moutai, will paying a few cents more per pint make much of a difference? A case (24 cans) of Tsingtao costs just 115 yuan on JD.com. Recent industry consolidation may also give China's brewers the ability to charge more. Of the nation's 33 regional markets, half are dominated by either Belgium's Anheuser-Busch InBev SA or a local player, according to UBS Group AG analyst Christine Peng.

Ukraine: Ukraine reports decline in December and H1 2017/18 barley exports
|
According to preliminary information of market participants, barley exports from Ukraine totalled 70.6 thousand tonnes in December 2017, which is four and a half times less than at the same time in 2016 (314.1 thousand tonnes) and the smallest December volume since 2011, reports UkrAgroConsult.
Almost all December barley exports were absorbed by Turkey (91%); the remainder went mostly to the European Union.
Ukraine exported 3.8 mln tonnes of barley in the first half of the 2017/18 season - down 11.7% year-on-year (4.3 mln tonnes was shipped abroad in July-December 2016/17).

|
New Zealand has added craft beer to the basket of goods it monitors to measure inflation, reflecting changing tastes and consumer spending in the South Pacific nation, Bloomberg reported on January 12.
“New Zealand used to be called a country of rugby, racing and beer but spending patterns are changing,” Jason Attewell, senior manager at Statistics New Zealand in Wellington, said on January 12. “Kiwis are increasingly keen on craft beer, body massages at beauty spas and football club memberships.”
Craft beer has surged in popularity in New Zealand, while high-speed internet has encouraged new web-based services like Netflix at the expense of older technologies. The statistics agency said DVD players and sewing machines were among items removed from the Consumers Price Index after its three-yearly review, and Uber rides and Airbnb accommodation were among services added.
