Brewery news USA: Budweiser passed by Miller Lite as the nation’s third-best selling beer
The King of Beers keeps falling farther off the throne. Budweiser was passed by Miller Lite as the US third-best selling beer, according to newly released 2017 year-end sales figures from Beer Marketer's Insights. Bud Light still has a strong grip on the top spot, followed by Coors Light.

But the competition among America's top brews has devolved into a contest of who can fall the slowest, rather than actually grow, as craft beers and spirits continue to give big brands problems. At the same time, Michelob Ultra and Modelo Especial have surged, while Corona continues to make steady gains.

Bud's fall to fourth continues a long-running slump since the so-called King of Beers peaked in the late 1980s. It lost its second-place spot in 2011 to Coors Light.

Anheuser Busch InBev can take solace in the fact that while Bud is falling in the U.S., it continues to post strong global growth.

Bud Light finished 2017 with 15.4 percent market share measured by shipments, well above Coors Light's 7.6 percent share, according to Beer Marketer's. But Bud Light's share is down from 16.2% in 2016 as the brand suffered its biggest yearly volume drop ever—a 5.7 percent decline, according to Beer Marketer's. The ...More info on site

Whisky news Canada, AB: Minhas Brewery to build distillery at its northeast Calgary microbrewery
Minhas Brewery is toasting plans for a new distillery in Calgary, the Calgary Herald reports.

At an event on January 18th attended by Premier Rachel Notley, the company announced it would build a distillery in its northeast Calgary microbrewery.

Minhas is already in the hard liquor business but its lines of vodka, gin and Irish cream are currently produced in Wisconsin.

Ravinder Minhas, co-founder and CEO of the company, said much of the production will be moved to the new distillery in Calgary, which is expected to be up and running by May 1, creating 20 new jobs, initially.

He said the company’s distillery plans stemmed in part from the NDP government’s reduction of the mark-up on spirits for producers who sell from their production facility, as well as a reduction in red tape in liquor regulations.

“We kind of understand it as prohibition-era rules that still existed, but those now are gone and that gives us an opportunity,” said Minhas, adding that the company also plans to add a Canadian single malt whisky to its offerings.

Minhas said the company had also been able to expand its brewing operations eight-fold in Calgary over the past 18 months, in part because of the NDP’s subsidy program ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Six Row Brewing Company hopes to open in St. Louis next month
Twisted Roots Brewing Company plans to stick to tradition. The brewery, which hopes to open next month at 3690 Forest Park Avenue in St. Louis, will be the fourth to take up residence in the small brick building in Midtown, following Falstaff Beer, Six Row Brewing Company and Pappo’s Pizzeria. Co-owners Kris Wangelin and Adam Patterson wanted to respect the place's history, but also knew they needed a twist, the Riverfront Times reported on January 22.

And that, they say, will mean focusing on the bar first and the brewing part second. “We want people to feel like they’re at their corner bar,” says Wangelin. "We’re a bar first, not a brew club first."

Even so, Wangelin and Patterson hope to offer an “open-door policy” for any brewers looking to expand their skills and try new flavors, as an attempt to connect with the people who are coming through their doors. Although “brewers by trade,” according to Wangelin, they will offer classic bar food with a twist, as well as vegetarian options. They say they aren't looking to get into distribution, but rather they want to focus on brewing and the environment they’re bringing to the area.

Both partners are from the Belleville ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Clifford Brewing now open in Hamilton, Ontario
Ontario Beverage Network reports that a long-anticipated brewery opening took place this past weekend in Hamilton, Ontario.

Clifford Brewing was launched in late 2014 by Brad Clifford following his two years of operating a nanobrewery out of Toronto beer bar Get Well. Clifford beers were brewed under contract while Brad and his father, Barc Clifford, scouted for a location to establish bricks-and-mortar facility.

As announced last October, that location ended up being found at 398 Nash Road North in Hamilton, where the younger Clifford is brewing on a custom-built 35 HL brewhouse and accompanying cellar of 70 HL fermenters.

The facility also features a 2,000-square-foot taproom and retail shop, where the brewery’s two flagship brands – Clifford Porter (5.9% abv) and Pinball Wizard APA (5.7% abv) – have been joined by the new East Hamilon Lager (5% abv) in 473 ml cans, and all three along with English Ale and IPA are available on draught.

Clifford Brewing will initially be open from 12:00 noon to 9:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and 12:00 noon to 5:00 PM on Sundays, with expanded hours planned for the future.

Brewery news USA, NY: Labatt USA to begin national search for a Brewmaster for its first US brewery
Labatt USA announced it will begin a national search for a Brewmaster to lead its first brewery in the U.S. The new brewery, which will open in Buffalo, New York, later this year, will focus on innovation for Labatt. The brewery will be located at 79 Perry, a mixed-use building that is currently under redevelopment by Pegula Sports and Entertainment, Brewbound reported on January 23.

“Establishing a Buffalo-based brewery will create a new era for the brand, and the new Brewmaster will be at the forefront,” said Glen Tibbits, general manager, Labatt USA. “We’re looking for a passionate brewer who is experienced in innovation and excited about creating more ways for people to experience Labatt beer.”

The Labatt Brewmaster will experiment and develop new beer styles in the pilot brewery. Customers will have the opportunity to taste and give feedback on the beers, influencing what styles Labatt rolls out more broadly throughout its U.S. footprint.

The Labatt USA Pilot Brewery is set to open in fall 2018.

Brewery news USA, MI: Founders Brewing Co. becomes Michigan’s largest brewery
For the first time, Founders Brewing Co. in Grand Rapids is Michigan's largest brewery, WZZM reported on January 19.

Founded in 1997, it eked past longtime leader Bell's Brewery with the most beer brewed in 2017, according to production numbers released last week from the breweries.

"If that's the case, it's definitely quite an honor, and a pat on the back to our team," Founders co-founder Mike Stevens said. "To be honest, Larry Bell and Bell's Brewery is the brewery I've looked up to for years."

Stevens said Founders produced about 466,700 barrels (a beer barrel is 31 gallons) last year. Bell said Bell's Brewery, based in the Kalamazoo area, produced 464,000 barrels. Both breweries grew substantially last year: Founders by 34% and Bell's by 9%.

"We're the largest craft brewery in Michigan," Bell said, on hearing the numbers on Founders. "Mahou (San Miguel) has always been a bigger brewer than us."

Founders, having sold a 30% stake to Spanish company Mahou San Miguel in 2014, is no longer considered a craft brewery under guidelines from the national Brewers Association trade organization. It defines "craft brewer" as a small, independent, traditional brewer — specifically, annual production of 6 million barrels of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Stock House Brewing Co. aiming at Memorial Day weekend opening in Wauwatosa
A new nano-brewery is setting its sights on a Memorial Day weekend opening in Wauwatosa. Stock House Brewing Co. will be located at 7208 W. North Ave. in the former home of Evenement Planning, OnMilwaukee.com reported on January 22.

Owners Paul Hepp and Mark Henry Mahoney are behind the brewery, which will feature a tiny one-barrel system, an indoor tap room with a bar that seats about 15 guests and a small outdoor beer garden behind the building.

Variety will be the spice of life at Stock House, where Mahoney says they will introduce new small-batch, uniquely flavored beers on a regular basis. In fact, he says, their goal is to create new beer every time, and never the same beer twice.

Mahoney, a veteran home brewer, debuted two of his beers – an IPA called "Not From Concentrate" and an Irish Breakfast stout infused with Cocoa Pebbles cereal and aged in a Jameson whiskey barrel – under the name Mahoney's Basement Beer Co. at Firkin Fest this past July. And he says there are more creative brews, all of which pay homage to classic styles.

Brewery news USA, IN: Sun King Brewery confirms plans of new specialty-production craft brewery
Sun King Brewery has announced it will open a specialty-production craft brewery and tap room in The Yard, the planned culinary complex in Fishers, the Indianapolis Star reported on January 23.

The 13,000-square-foot brewery will be two stories with a rooftop patio and will produce 5,000 barrels a year. Carry-out beer will be sold, and rental space will be available for private and community events.

At The Yard, Sun King will focus on developing handcrafted, specialty beers that experiment with different ingredients, styles and methods, according to a news release from the company.

"Sun King Brewery started in a space about the size of what we are building in Fishers, intent on experimenting with new ingredients and techniques to create what we love — delicious, quality craft beer inspired by all that is Indiana," Clay Robinson, co-founder of Sun King Brewery, said in a statement. "And while we've grown rapidly over the years, we remain committed to crafting the highest quality beer and are excited to open a new brewery that allows us to get back to our roots and to continue to innovate."

The Yard, at 116th Street and I-69, is a planned dining complex that will include up to 18 restaurants ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CO: Homebrewing competition winner Jessica Fierro now owns Great Storm Brewing in Colorado Springs
In June 2017, Jessica Fierro won on cable network Viceland’s Beerland homebrewing competition show. Her winning brew, Dońa Neta, a tamarind Bičre de Garde, was brewed, canned and retailed by Anheuser-Busch InBev-owned show sponsor Golden Road Brewing. At the time, Fierro said she hoped to open her own brewery somewhere down the line.

Somewhere down the line is now — as of Friday, Jan. 19, Fierro owns Great Storm Brewing in Colorado Springs. She’s been working with former owners Jeff and Lynn Jacobs on the move since summer, the Colorado Springs Independent reported on January 22.

“Jeff and Lynn are great people, and they decided it was their time to sell,” says Fierro via e-mail. “We were lucky enough to have just won Beerland and were looking to move the brewing out of the garage.”

Of course, there’s a big difference between homebrewing and pro brewing — recipes don’t scale one to one for reasons you’ll find in any physical chemistry textbook, to list one of many complications. Fierro knows there's a difference. She says she’s been brewing on large systems across the front range to prep. Further, Great Storm’s current brewers Gretchen Foster, Kelly Bugbee and Ian Steele will be staying on. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, RI: Pawtucket’s Bucket Brewery to cease operations in mid-March
Pawtucket is losing one of the companies that made the city a hub for local craft beer, WPRI reported on January 23.

Bucket Brewery, founded in 2010, has announced it plans to cease operations in mid-March. The company has a tap room and brewing facilities on Carver Street.

“Bucket was founded and expanded with a specific business plan in mind, and we’ve worked to adapt that plan as the state laws, consumers, and direction of micro brewery ownership have changed,” the company said in a statement. “Within the last few months, we’ve weighed the business on all levels and determined that the current path ultimately is not what we want for Bucket.”

In addition to Bucket, Pawtucket is also home to Foolproof Brewing Co., Isle Brewers Guild and Crooked Current Brewery. Mayor Don Grebien has frequently highlighted the craft beer cluster as a sign of the city’s dynamism.

“We’re very saddened to hear the news about their closing,” Nick Garrison, Foolproof’s president and founder, told Eyewitness News. “From one business owner to another, it’s a very difficult decision to make. We wish them the best, and we’re sorry to hear the news.”

Garrison said that while he remains optimistic about Foolproof’s future, he has noted ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea: Beer imports up 44.9% by value in 2017
The beer trade deficit surpassed $100 million for the first time in South Korean history last year, as consumers are increasingly electing to imbibe foreign brews, The Korea Bizwire reported on January 22.

Trade data collected by the Korea Customs Service showed last year’s beer imports stood at $263 million, 44.9 percent higher than in 2016.

South Korean beers heading abroad, in comparison, amounted to less than half that figure, for a total of $112 million.

With exports of domestic beer failing to match the surging growth of imports, the trade deficit from 2016 to 2017 exploded by 66.1 percent to reach $156.5 million.

The trade deficit has ballooned in the last five years, following the first yearly deficit in 2012 which came in at $5.77 million.

In another first, last July beer overtook wine and spirits to become the best-selling category of imported alcohol.

The Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corp. has previously stated that there has been a shift in South Koreans’ beer drinking habits towards enjoying alcohol in the comfort of their own home as opposed to dining out.

Both the quantity and quality of imported beers are on the rise, as there is 2.5 times more variety of options that in 2016. ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: AB InBev, Molson Coors confirm beer prices hikes for this year
AB InBev and Molson Coors will raise beer prices to above inflation over the next 12 months in the UK, making some beers and ciders up to 3.9% more expensive than in 2017, The Morning Advertiser reported on January 21. Inflation currently sits at 3%, according to the Office For National Statistics, but the Bank of England believes it will fall back to 2% this year.

While inflation dipped from 3.1% (a six-year high) in November to 3% in December, AB InBev and Molson Coors are set to raise product prices by between 3% and 3.9%, The Morning Advertiser has learned.

AB InBev, which produces Bass, Boddingtons, Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois, will increase prices by 3.9% across its portfolio. A spokesperson said this reflected ongoing pressure on the beer industry and the UK economy.

A spokesperson said: “We have communicated to our customers that from 1 February 2018 we will be increasing our wholesale price by 3.9% across our portfolio (excluding duty).

“This increase is part of our regular price reviews and reflects ongoing pressure in the beer industry and the UK economy.”

The spokesperson added: “We always look to keep any increases to a minimum for ...More info on site
