Brewery news Mexico: Opposition to Constellation Brands’ new brewery in Mexicali continues
A major U.S. beer manufacturer’s decision to build a giant production plant in Baja California’s desert capital has been cause for much celebration in Gov. Francisco Vega de Lamadrid’s administration. But not everybody is applauding, the Reading Eagle reported on January 29.

Constellation Brands, maker of Modelo and Corona beers, finds itself in the crossfire of a bitter dispute. On one side are government officials who are vowing to see the project through; on the other, opponents determined to shut it down, saying the plant will use a large amount of water that should go to local farmers.

The stakes are high: The project is a state-of-the-art brewery that represents an investment of more than $1 billion — the largest the region has seen in years, some say decades, and will provide 750 permanent jobs.

The plant, scheduled for completion in late 2019 or early 2020, will be export-oriented, with all product destined for U.S. consumers. In the initial phase, it expects to produce 132 million gallons annually — the equivalent of 58 million cases of beer; at a maximum it would produce four times that amount.

“Mexicali is growing like it never has in its history, and part of the reason is that ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Outpost Brewing Co. already pouring its beers in South Lake Tahoe
This December, Outpost Brewing Co., South Shore's newest brewery, poured its first beer, the Horchata Stout — a chocolatey dark brew with a hint of cinnamon, the Tahoe Daily Tribune reported on January 29.

The new brewery opened up in the space formerly known as the Basecamp Beer Garden connected to the namesake hotel.

"We emptied out room 140 of the hotel and put the brewery in there," explained Jimmy Davis, kitchen manager at Outpost Brewing Co. — which some may remember was initially expected to open as Desolation Brewing then Room 140 Brewing.

Since its first pour, Outpost now has four more beers on tap: Pale King Pale Ale, Explorer Cream Ale, Rowdy Rudy's IPA, and Buried Hatchet Amber, all of which are available to take home in crowlers (32-ounce cans).

And with the expanded beer offering — which includes a handful of guest taps — came a beefed up food menu.

"We started out with the beer garden German theme with bratwursts, but I wanted to move away from that," said Davis.

Though the menu still features a selection of themed "wursts" like the Southwest —a spicy jalapeño cheddar elk sausage topped with avocado, feta cheese and sriracha and served on a pretzel bun ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Ol’ Republic Brewery to open new brewery and taproom in Rancho Cordova
Ol’ Republic Brewery has already signed a lease, and will open a brewery and taproom in March of this year in the City of Rancho Cordova, Brewbound reported on January 27.

Ol’ Republic, celebrating its seventh year in business this February, acquired the brewing facility and taproom at 11151 Trade Center Drive, steps away from Hwy 50 and the Sunrise Blvd. Light Rail Station. The location is an excellent hub facility to service the greater Sacramento area, and part of the growing Barrel District in Rancho Cordova. The Barrel District is already home to six breweries and distilleries, with another four set to open this year.

“Self-distributing from here [Rancho Cordova] means we can deliver quickly and efficiently to any account in the area,” said Simon Olney, co-founder. “The current twice-a-week delivery schedule from Nevada City is limiting us in Sacramento.”

Ol’ Republic is a multiple award-winning brewery. “Big Mike” Moore, who heads up the California State Fair commercial beer competition, has been witness to many of these awards.

“These two hard working ‘best friends’ make some of the best lagers in the State of California,” said Moore. “They have won numerous awards for their beers including ‘Best of Show’ for Dead Canary, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Rebel Hill Brewing Co. coming to Phoenixville in February
A homebrewer has decided to open his own brewery in Phoenixville, the Reading Eagle reported on January 28.

Continuing two recent trends, longtime homebrewer Greg Kluge is opening Rebel Hill Brewing Co. in East Pikeland Township, Chester County - just outside the borough. He hopes to open by mid-February.

Kluge, who has been homebrewing for about 11 years, began contemplating opening a brewery about six years ago and got serious about two years ago and started taking courses through the Small Business Administration. As his opening day approaches, Kluge said he is feeling a range of emotions.

"I feel everything," he said. "I feel stress, fear, anxiousness, but I'm excited at the same time. I don't really feel like it's real, and I probably won't until the first beer."

The Brewery is at 420 Schuylkill Road (Route 23) in the Westside Apartments and Shops development. Kluge originally hoped to open in downtown Phoenixville, which is currently home to five other breweries, but that didn't work out.

In addition to the five breweries in Phoenixville, Sly Fox also has a brewpub in East Pikeland Township. When Rebel Hill opens, that will give the area seven breweries.

"When I was originally looking, other than Iron Hill, only Stable ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Northwinds Brewery opens its second location in Blue Mountain Village
Northwinds Brewery has announced that its second location is now open in Blue Mountain Village, a resort town situated several kilometres west of its original home in Collingwood, Canadian Beer News reported on January 26.

Originally announced in September 2016, the new location follows the model of the first in featuring a brewhouse, full service restaurant and taproom, and retail store selling beer and branded merchandise.

The new Northwinds is located at 180 Jozo Weider Blvd. in Blue Mountain.

Brewery news USA, FL: Leaven Brewing Co. to open its doors in Riverview on March 30
Apollo Beach residents KJ and Jillian Lynch are sharing their love of beer with the community in their new brewery, Leaven Brewing Co., which is opening its doors on Boyette Rd., Riverview this coming spring, the Osprey Observer reported on January 29.

The brewery, located in a 4,000 sq. ft. space in the Anytime Fitness-anchored Shoppes of Boyette, will open to the public with a ribbon cutting and grand opening event on March 30.

The Lynchs, who fell in love over beer and got married at a brewery, moved to the area from Ft. Myers for KJ to take a position with BrewHub in Lakeland and are now translating that experience into Leaven.

Currently, the Lynchs plan to open the brewery Fridays and Saturdays from 3-10 p.m. offering 12 beers on tap including five flagships beers, a kolsch, a blonde ale, an IPA, a red ale and an oatmeal stout, that will always be available, five rotational beers that will match the season, for example pumpkin beers or imperial stouts, a cider and a guest tap that will feature beers from other Florida breweries. The couple will work with food trucks and other local restaurants to offer food to their customers.

Brewery news USA, MI: Griffin Claw Brewing Co. set to launch its Rochester Hills facility in February
A Rochester Hills brewing facility for Griffin Claw Brewing Co. is set to be operational in February, The Oakland Press reported on January 26.

According to Crain’s Detroit Business, the 33,000 square-foot facility at M-59 and Crooks Road is set to be operational next month. Brewing and distilling will begin in the spring or summer, and a taproom will follow eventually.

The Rochester Hills site will be equipped with a 20-barrel brewhouse, and 30 to 40 percent of the space will be used for distribution.

The new facility will employ 20 to 30 new employees when fully operational.

Griffin Claw opened its 15,000 square-foot brewery at 575 S. Eton St. in Birmingham, UK in 2013.

Brewery news USA, SD: Eponymous Brewing Co. planning to open its doors on March 2
Sean Weber and his buddy started fermenting barley and hops in the garage of their Brookings rental.

For years, it was a hobby.

But Weber, a 29-year-old project coordinator for Daktronics, has already started to take beer making beyond what he calls the "third stall." He and his partner plan to open Eponymous Brewing Co. on March 2 in Brookings, SD, The Argus Leader reported on January 26.

“I don’t think it’s going to be hard to go to work,” Weber said.

Eponymous Brewing will be located at 126 Main Avenue S. in a newly built mixed-use building on the southern edge of the college town’s downtown.

The brewing equipment is already set up inside. When the brewery opens in March, it will feature a taproom with about 50 seats. There are plans to add a kitchen and patio later, as funding allows, Weber said.

Weber’s roommate-turned-business partner Kyle McElhany has a science background, which he uses in his work at 3M. McElhany’s interest in science also led him to homebrewing, which uses single-cell microorganisms (yeast) to transform sugars into the malty beverage enjoyed by so many beer drinkers.

“He’s a microbiologist, so naturally that flowed into beer,” Weber said.

Weber describes Eponymous’ beer menu as experimental, following ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada: Heineken’s alcohol-free beer now available in Canada
Heineken announced on January 29 that its alcohol-free beer is now available in Canada, Canadify reported.

Heineken 0.0 is an alcohol-free lager brewed from scratch with a unique recipe using natural flavours for a beverage that offers a balanced taste with fruity notes and a soft malty body, the company said.

Available in over 16 international markets, Canada is the first country in North America to offer Heineken 0.0.

Featuring 69 calories per 330ml bottle or can, the brand’s iconic green Heineken label has been replaced with a new blue version associated with the alcohol-free category.

Heineken 0.0 can be found at grocers and select retailers across Canada in n 330ml cans and bottles, 6 packs of 330ml cans and 6 packs of 330ml bottles.

Brewery news USA, OH: Missing Mountain to become the third brewery to call Cuyahoga Falls home
Longtime friends Dave Bertolotti, Dan Kephart, Keith McFarlane and Danny Yagersz joked years ago that they would open a brewery in 2025.

They are beating their estimate with plenty of time to spare, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on January 29.

The homebrewers are on the verge of launching Missing Mountain Brewing Co., a 10-barrel production brewery, tasting room and eatery at 2811 Front St. in Cuyahoga Falls on the border of Silver Lake.

The two-story brewery and taproom — made up of two separate buildings — is expected to open in April.

Missing Mountain sits along the Cuyahoga River and features large outdoor patios overlooking the waterway. It’s a fitting, scenic setting for a group of guys who once dreamed of moving to Colorado so they could go snowboarding more often.

The Missing Mountain name is an homage to their love of mountains.

“We really love this property,” McFarlane said. “It’s just a beautiful setup here.”

Missing Mountain hopes to open the tasting room in April and plans to distribute its draft-only beer to bars and restaurants.

The smallish tasting room — there’s a balcony level, too — will feature salads and sandwiches, along with beer, wine and liquor.

There will be some communal seating, along with individual ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: 1849 Brewing Co. wants to be serving its beer by June
The operators of 1849 Brewing Co. in Grass Valley, CA say they want to be serving beer by June in the old printing area of The Union newspaper, The Union of Grass Valley reported on January 29.

David and Kevin Krikorian on January 26 helped move two 930-gallon fermenters into the 464 Sutton Way facility. The fermenters, each one weighing over 1,800 pounds, are the first of several items that will fill over 5,000 square feet in a space once used to print the newspaper.

"Most of the other stuff is smaller in size," said David Krikorian, the brewery's vice president.

Krikorian and his son Kevin intend to start construction next month, estimating they'll need at least four months to build and transport everything needed for the brewery and restaurant, which will include a stage for performers.

"We're hoping to be open by June," David Krikorian said. "We'd like to be open sooner."

The Krikorians are planning for a 20-seat bar with another 50 seats in their restaurant. David Krikorian said people can expect typical pub food, though the emphasis is on the beer.

"This is mostly not a restaurant," he said. "It's a brewery/taproom."

The men initially want ales and lagers served at their business. IPAs ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Bookhouse Brewing to join Ohio City’s beer scene this summer
Vaughn Stewart and Luke Brevoort are old friends who met at college and bonded over similar sentiments about the importance of strong neighborhood hubs, whether they be bookstores, coffee shops or the corner pub, the Cleveland Scene reported on January 26.

Four years ago they put pen to paper and began sketching out plans for a neighborhood hub of their own. When Bookhouse Brewing opens this summer it will be a brewery and taproom, yes, but it will also be a cozy and convivial haven for neighbors to connect and commune over a few pints of fresh-brewed beer.

“We really want to differentiate ourselves in terms of the vibe of the place, to sort of be the calm within the storm,” says Brevoort. “Places can get a little crazy on weekend nights and we want to be a place that’s a little lower key.”

Bookhouse Brewing is currently taking shape on the ground floor of the West 25th Streets Lofts complex at 1526 W. 25th Street, one block south of Detroit Road. Auspiciously, the 3,500-square-foot space was once the site of Baehr Brewing, which operated here from the 1860s until 1901, later as Cleveland and Sandusky Brewing Company.

“There’s a lot of history ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Southern Tier Brewery Company to open brewery in Cleveland
RED Restaurant Group's 811 Kitchen Bar Lounge, which closed in June 2017 for rebranding and slated to reopen that fall, has closed. The Cleveland location, 811 Prospect Ave., will welcome a Southern Tier Brewery Company brewery and tasting room, the Cleveland Jewish News reported on January 30.

Brad Friedlander of RED Restaurant Group said RED Restaurant Group abandoned 811 Kitchen Bar Lounge because it "didn't take off the way we hoped it would."

Southern Tier Brewery Company's brewery and tasting room, which opens in the spring, will feature Cleveland-specialty beers, along with already existing beers, barrel-aged products and sours.

Southern Tier Brewery Company has locations in Pittsburgh and Lakewood, N.Y.

Brewery news USA, CT: Stony Creek Brewery to launch brewpub in Mashantucket
Branford-based Stony Creek Brewery will open a brewpub at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket this summer, representatives for the casino announced on January 30.

The two-floor, 7,100-square-foot space next to the Fox Theater will have seating for more than 300 guests, according to a news release. The ground floor will feature a beer garden and a brew deck with a view into the brewhouse, and the second floor will offer a Southern California-themed cocktail bar, a stage for live entertainment and an elevated banquet table overlooking the property. The brewery will also serve food.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver a true local beer experience to our guests and we have a tremendous in-state partner in Stony Creek Brewery,” said Jason Guyot, Foxwoods’ senior vice president of resort operations and developments. “Stony Creek Brewery will be a unique, exciting attraction that we believe will be a hit with loyal Foxwoods guests.”

“Over the last year we have forged a strong relationship with Foxwoods Resort Casino,” said Stony Creek founder Ed Crowley Sr. “They have shown a genuine belief in the importance of supporting local craft beer. Stony Creek Brewery at Foxwoods will offer the same comforts our guests experience at ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CA: Absolution Brewing Company soft-opens new San Diego location
Back in 2013, Reader Beer News reported that a planned local brewery, Absolution Brewing Company, had made the decision to join the unsaturated Los Angeles beer scene, rather than San Diego. Having thrived in its four-year-old brewery in Torrance, Absolution has now found a home in San Diego after all, the San Diego Reader reported on January 29.

On January 26, the beer company soft-opened its Absolution by the Sea restaurant, taking over the recently vacated brewpub of La Jolla Brewing Company (7536 Fay Avenue, La Jolla).

As it turns out, this venue was among the first locations targeted by cofounder Steve Farguson when he decided to open Absolution. "We tried to buy this seven years ago," he recalls. The San Diegan has familial ties to La Jolla and knew the property well. "I had a desire to have this place for a long time. I used to come here in its heyday when they were making really good beer."

Ownership at the brewpub location has changed hands since then, as it has several times over the past 20 years, during which it's operated both under the name La Jolla Brewery and La Jolla Brew House. Its most recent incarnation quietly closed this ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: Downtown Ithaca’s Bandwagon Brewpub to close its doors in February
Downtown Ithaca’s Bandwagon Brewpub opened in the basement of historic Clinton Hall in December, 2009, and as they plan to close the eatery in February, the owners are “inviting the Ithaca community to join us down at the brewpub, raise a pint, and help us close it out with a bang,” 14850.com reported on January 26

The restaurant’s last night will be Valentine’s Day — Wednesday, February 14th. After that, the owners will focus solely on their farm brewery and tasting room in Interlaken. Owner and chef Will Olson says, “Closing this chapter is bittersweet, but our goal has always been to operate a production brewery.”

At the beginning, Olson and co-owners Nick Antczak, Alex Johnson, and Michael Johnson operated the tiny basement eatery with tiny batches of beer brewed in the kitchen, and they soon expanded into the next-door basement space for brewing and additional bar seating.

Throughout its eight years, Bandwagon has focused on farm-fresh local and regional food, and specialized in local spirits, in addition to the hyperlocal beer and craft beer from around the state and beyond. They’ve always offered burgers made with local beef, and cured the bacon themselves to put on top. Salads featured local produce and ...More info on site

Barley news Australia & China: China’s ‘insatiable’ demand for Australian barley could continue
China is soaking up almost all of Australia's barley exports due to rising livestock feed demand and the trend could continue as Beijing looks to divert corn supplies toward ethanol fuel, an Australian export firm said on January 26, Nasdaq reported.

China now buys 80-90 percent of Australian barley exports, reflecting "insatiable" demand from its livestock industry, Scott Haughton, managing director of Peter Cremer Australia, said.

"Australia has turned away from global barley pricing due to this fact," he told the Paris Grain Day conference organised by consultancy Agritel. "If you look at Australian barley and (China's) Dalian corn on any given day there's a correlation."

Australian barley exports are expected to fall sharply this season to 5.5 million tonnes after a weather-hit harvest, Haughton said, but Chinese demand is likely to remain strong.

The adverse weather also affected crop quality, which has reduced the amount of malting-grade barley and helped Canada take some market share in China in the malt segment.

Chinese reforms of agricultural policy could sustain strong demand for Australian feed barley as China plans to develop use of ethanol fuel that could absorb some of its huge corn stocks, Haughton said.

Chinese demand could encourage Australian farmers to grow more barley as ...More info on site

Brewery news Ghana: The Accra Brewery Limited buys a plant to boost production capacity
The Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), one of the largest and leading breweries in Ghana, has acquired a 25 million-dollar plant to boost the production of varieties of non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, The Ghana News Agency reported on January 31.

The plant has the capacity to produce over 40,000 bottles of beverages daily.

Speaking to the media in Accra on January 31 after a familiarisation tour at the facility, Ms Adowoa Arthur, ABL Legal and Corporate Affairs Director, said the company would inaugurate the equipment by mid-year to augment its operations.

The tour was also to afford journalists the opportunity to interact with management and understand the operations of ABL, now a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch (AB) InBev, the world’s leading brewer.

Ms Arthur explained that the new plant gives the company the operational ability to introduce more brands to satisfy consumers.

According to her, the new facility has modern robotics for cleaning bottles, designing and labelling products among others.

“With the new equipment, we are able to increase our production levels to meet the demand of our consumers,” she added.

She said under the new ownership ABL was more focused and more determined than before to be the preferred beverage company in Ghana.

Brewery news Kenya: East African Breweries secures Sh12.5 bln loan for its Senator Keg factory in Kisumu
East African Breweries Limited (EABL) has secured a Sh12.5 billion long-term loan from Standard Bank Group to fund the ongoing construction of its Senator Keg factory in Kisumu, The Daily Nation reported on January 27.

The completion of the factory is expected to create 110,000 direct and indirect jobs and push sorghum demand from the current 20,000 tonnes to around 40,000 in the next five years.

The regional brewer says the South Africa-based lender has committed to advance the business Sh7.5 billion with Stanbic Holdings, its Kenyan subsidiary, funding the balance.

The EABL, which is 50.02 per cent owned by multinational brewer Diageo, says it will pump in Sh2.5 billion of its own cash into the Sh15 billion factory whose construction is expected to be complete by July 2019.

“We managed to secure a Sh12.5 billion long-term facility,” said Gyuri Geiszl, EABL’s finance director. “We have just drawn down a small portion, about Sh2 billion, since the project has just started. As we move along, we shall generate the cashflow to fund the remaining portion.”

The EABL did not disclose the tenure of the facility or the applicable interest rate.

Stanbic Holdings has been one of EABL’s four principal bankers, supporting other capital intensive projects alongside ...More info on site

Brewery news South Korea & China: Oriental Brewery looking to export its Cass beer to China
Oriental Brewery (OB), a South Korean beer company, plans to export one of its flagship alcohol beverages to China this year, using the marketing and sales networks of its parent company Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) in the region, the company said on January 30.

The beer brand OB will be introducing to Chinese consumers will be Cass, which will be more expensive than Tsingtao and Harbin, but cheaper than AB InBev's Budweiser.

It seeks to use its export momentum in Japan, Hong Kong and Mongolia to extend its reach to mainland China, the world's second largest economy, it added.

OB's Blue Girl, which is distributed by Jebsen in Hong Kong, has been the No. 1 beer brand in the Chinese city since 2007.

The premium beer may be 50 percent more expensive than other alcohol beverages in Hong Kong, but it was able to surpass San Miguel's market share.

This is because OB used a localization strategy by making and distributing Blue Girl tailored to Hong Kong consumers.

OB's Cass is the No. 1 beer in Mongolia with a 40 percent market share, the company added.

It began marketing and selling Cass in Mongolia in December 1998 through its unique delivery system in which the ...More info on site

Brewery news New Zealand: Lion to open micro-brewery in Christchurch in late March
Brewing giant Lion wants to revive its presence in Christchurch, New Zealand after the earthquake destroyed its iconic red building, but this time with the goal of creating the world's most sustainable brewery, Stuff.co.nz reported on January 28.

Lion's latest project, The Fermentist, will be a micro-brewery located on Colombo Street, near the old Canterbury Breweries.

Canterbury Breweries, which is owned by Lion Nathan, was on the corner of Antigua and St Asaph streets, but shut its doors in 2012 because of extensive earthquake damage.

Lion's sustainability manager Kat McDonald said the intent behind The Fermentist was to create transparency in how Lion produced its beer, and also to use it as a platform that educated consumers about what was behind their purchasing decisions.

All hops used to produce the beer will be sourced from Nelson.

The micro-brewery is planned to be solar-powered, have rain water storage, an electric vehicles fleet and has also partnered with a local grocer, Cultivate, that grows vegetables in Christchurch and delivers them by electric bike.

McDonald said the name The Fermentist was a play on the brewing process of the beer but also about the fermented foods that will be sold through its cafe.

"The name conjures up experimentation and trying ...More info on site
