Brewery news USA: Beer industry’s first round of consolidation is largely over - analysts
The beer industry’s first round of consolidation is largely over as macro US brewers have slowed their pace of craft brewery acquisitions, making way for other types of deals that offer small brewers new paths forward, says Rabobank.

While craft beer brands are still registering consistent steady growth of roughly 5%-6%, the years of double-digit gains appear to be over and competing on price will become an important “strategic lever,” Rabobank senior beverages analyst, Jim Watson, says.

“Price competition in craft still isn’t as explicit, but it’s definitely increased,” Watson told BeverageDaily, adding that new, smaller craft beer brands are using price as one of their major selling points to crack into the market.

“We believe craft brewers need partners in order to survive in this new market.”

Recent deals including minority stake investments, cross-country craft alliances, and private equity deals are positioning small brewers for future growth while keeping their craft credibility intact, according to Rabobank.

“The competing forces of local vs. scale are seemingly at odds, but breweries are finding many ways around the contradiction,” Watson continues.

Deals such as Spanish brewer Mahou San Miguel’s 30% stake in Avery Brewing Co. and Founders Brewery Co. help support ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Two new breweries coming to Weymouth
Plans are taking shape for two new brew houses and taprooms to open in Weymouth, adding to the craft beer boom currently underway on the South Shore, The Patriot Ledger reported on January 31.

Article Fifteen Brewing Company plans to open a 2,400-square-foot microbrewery in the space previously used by Brewster Ambulance at 835 Washington St. early this summer.

Owner Leo Reardon previously brewed his beer at a cooperative style brewery in Norwood, but wanted to branch out on his own. Reardon said his fiancée is a paramedic with Brewster Ambulance, and they saw the former ambulance bay as the ideal spot to get started.

“It’s owned by George Brewster, and he’s a big supporter of ours,” Reardon said.

A Canton firefighter and paramedic, Reardon said he first got interested in brewing beer when he was stationed in Germany as a U.S. Army medic.

“Beer is brewed locally there and each town has their own brewery, so it became a passion of mine,” he said. “Breweries have become a local space to come together instead of going to a seedy dive bar.”

Reardon said Article Fifteen is in reference to a process from the Uniform Code of Military Justice that typically occurs when a member of ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Platform Beer Co.’s fifth location in Over-the-Rhine to focus on barrel-aged beers
Over-the-Rhine is getting a new craft brewery, WCPO reported on February 1.

Cleveland-based Platform Beer Co. will open its fifth location with a special focus on barrel-aged beers at 1201 Main St. this summer, according to Platform co-founder Justin Carson.

A grand opening date will be announced within the next few months, he said.

"We're really trying to focus on the barrel-aged side of things," Carson said. "We'll kind of be walking a consumer through barrel aging."

The Over-the-Rhine location is a new concept for Platform Beer, which opened its first tap room in July 2014. The 2,500-square-foot, two-story Cincinnati brewery will be called LOCOBA by Platform. LOCOBA is short for Local Coffee Barrels. Carson said customers will be able to taste whiskey from barrels that Platform reuses to age its imperial stout beer, which will be brewed on site and aged for eight months to a year.

"On site, you'll then be able to taste that imperial stout and the whiskey flavor it picks up from the barrel," he said.

Platform also has partnered with Coffee Emporium. The local coffee distributor is using the brewery's barrels to soak coffee beans for coffee that will be sold at LOCOBA.

"Those beans will pick up ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ID: Bear Island Brewing Co. obtains permission to open its brewery in Boise
Bear Island Brewing Co. obtained Boise City Council permission on January 30 to turn the Boise Fire Department’s former Firehouse No. 6 on Liberty Street just north of Fairview Avenue into a brewery with a taproom and other space, the Idaho Statesman reported.

The company, run by husband and wife Beth and Steve Bechtel, both Navy veterans, plans to add two garage doors to the west side of the building, “bringing back the original appearance and appeal,” according to a letter CEO Beth Bechtel wrote to the city. Other than that and a few new windows or doors, the building won’t change much, according to the letter.

“Our ultimate goal is to become the ‘neighborhood’s living room’ and therefore a community gathering place,” Bechtel wrote. “We will create a comfortable location for our neighborhood with multiple beverage options such as our beer, local wine, local cider, and non-alcoholic beverages such as soda pop, coffee and tea.”

The old fire station sits behind a Jackson’s convenience store on the northeast corner of Liberty and Fairview. If the plan becomes a reality, brewing equipment will be placed in the bays where fire trucks originally parked, according to Bechtel’s letter. A building east of the main ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Hop River Brewing Co. to open its doors in Port Wayne on Saturday, February 3
From the community tables to a menu with shareable plates, the team at Hop River Brewing Co. is hoping to create a sense of community, the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette reported on January 31.

The brewery, which is in the heart of Port Wayne's riverfront development plan on North Harrison Street, will open on February 3. The grand opening, which will be from noon to 12:30 a.m., will feature raffles, cornhole and the chance to check out the brewhouse.

“We want people to be able to create memories and get to know each other and make friends,” says Mary Corinne Lowenstein-DeGood, director of marketing and human resources.

The menu created by Zach Croy, who helped launch Bravas and interned at Joseph Decuis, features shareable plates, soups, salads and sandwiches.

Lowenstein-DeGood says Croy and the team are aware of various dietary needs, and the menu is vegan and vegetarian friendly with gluten-free options. It's also family friendly.

There will likely be two soups on the menu, one of which will be vegetarian or vegan. The salads might include a composite salad with a quinoa base.

But even with a strong craft-kitchen program, Hop River is hoping to fit in a niche in the city, “knowing that we're ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Trail’s End Brewing to launch its first brand this coming weekend
A brewery focused on “celebrating German styles of beer, investing in our local community, and having a venue for fun, friends, and family” has announced that it will be launching its first brand this coming weekend in Waterloo, Canadian Beer News reported on January 31.

Trail’s End Brewing is entering the market with Grand Valley Pilsner, which is currently being brewed under contract while scouting is underway for a permanent location.

The beer was previewed at several events and festivals last year in advance of this official launch, and is described as follows:

“Inspired by the simplicity and purity of the German brewing tradition and the rich heritage of Kitchener/Waterloo, we’ve strived to create a beer that is classic, yet unique. Using only 4 natural ingredients found as locally as possible, we then aged it for sooooo long, creating a beer with a malty punch and an über clean finish.”

The launch party for Grand Valley Pilsner will take place at Beertown Waterloo on Saturday February 3rd from 4:00 to 8:00 PM.

Whisky news USA, CA: Anchor Distilling rebrands as Hotlaing & Co
Anchor Distilling, formerly the spirits arm of famous San Francisco’s Anchor Brewing, has “reconnected with its roots” and been renamed Hotlaing & Co, it has been announced.

Anchor Brewing was acquired by Japanese beer giant Sapporo in August last year with Anchor Distilling becoming independent under the ownership of Tony Foglio and UK fine wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd.

Now separate from Anchor Brewing trademarks necessitated the change of name and the spirits producer has taken inspiration from its small batch whiskey range – ‘Old Potrero Hotaling’s’ – which was named after AP Hotaling who came out west during the Gold Rush of 1849 and became one of San Francisco’s most reputable spirits dealers, The Drinks Business reported on February 2.

CEO Dennis Carr explained: “The Hotaling name pays tribute to our organisation’s past as it has been the name of our rarest and most sought-after expression of Old Potrero Whiskey, Hotaling’s, and celebrates our connection with San Francisco.”

The company also announced it would be moving its offices, distillery and tasting room to a new location in San Francisco soon.

Brewery news USA, TN: Crosstown Brewing Company formally launches its brand in Memphis
Ahead of the opening of its taproom in a few weeks, Crosstown Brewing Company has started sending its beers to bars and restaurants in Memphis as the new brand formally launches in the market, the Memphis Daily News reported on February 2.

The brand has been in the works in some form or fashion since the beginning of 2015. That’s when co-founders Will Goodwin and Clark Ortkiese launched a Facebook page for their craft beer brewery, the first post for which was simply the brand’s logo. It generated a flood of interest, which then translated into support for a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds - more than $28,000.

Those Kickstarter backers - who gave $50 or more - are getting an early look at Crosstown Brewing’s taproom at an event on Feb. 10, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. It will be a gathering for checking out the space, tasting the beers and meeting other early supporters in advance of the grand opening on Feb. 16.

“Our taproom is nearly finished - we’re close, and every day we get closer,” Ortkiese said. “We promised when we did our Kickstarter two years ago that the Kickstarter party would be the first event we have ...More info on site

Barley news EU: It is very wet in Western Europe but there still is time until barley sowing
It is still very wet in Western Europe and the fields are quite under water. Of course there is still plenty of time for spring sowings, but for the moment it is just not possible, GrainCom analysts said in their last newsletter on February 2.

In France planting delays are likely. Farmers will not be much interested to sell their spring crops before plantings. There was some buying activity left and right in the last days. Potentially it might be difficult to get support from first hand sellers for the next round of buying, the analysts said.

EU feed barley prices are well supported in France and Germany due to ongoing buying interest and thin supply on the offer side. Although prices have slightly eased following the decrease in Euronext wheat, the premiums for feed barley remain strong.

Brewery news Nigeria: Things happening fast in Nigeria’s beer market
With a market share of 9%, Nigeria’s beer market has been rated one of the 10 fastest growing beer markets in the world. Raheem Akingbolu in a report by Thisday Newspapers on February 1 looks at the competition in the market and emerging trends.

Like in the game of football, where players make frantic efforts to score goals, things are happening fast in the Nigerian beer market. Until recently, the duel was well pronounced between Nigerian Breweries Plc and Guinness Nigeria. But since 2011, when SABMiller, one of the world’s top brewers, acquired majority share in the International Breweries Ilesa, manufacturers of Trophy Larger and also took control of the ownership of Hero, a popular brand in the Eastern market, the game has changed.

Within three years of the acquisition, top strikers in the nation’s beer market were not only tackled by Trophy and Hero, the two brands assumed good positions among the low to middle class consumers, the largest segment of beer consumers in the country. A development, which sent handlers of the existing market leaders back to drawing board for strategies that could help them control their slowing market share. To this end, industry watchers have consistently argued that the ...More info on site
