China: AB InBev opens brewery to produce craft beers in Wuhan
|
Even during the freezing winter months, nothing seems to stop Chinese beer lovers from grabbing cold brew from the fridge and enjoying a spicy hotpot or barbecue dinner with friends, The Straits Times reported on February 5.
China has grown to become the world's largest consumer market for beer and people nowadays have more diversity than ever to meet their ever-growing tastes. Whether you fancy a glass of the Chinese staple, Tsingtao, or prefer a flavoured Indian Pale Ale (IPA) imported from Britain, there are always pubs, bars and online stores offering a multitude of different beer options.
And late in January, a new brewery opened in China by Anheuser-Busch InBev looks set to bring the art of craft beer-making even closer to Chinese consumers.
The central city of Wuhan, Hubei province, was selected by the world's largest brewer as the site for its new brewery dedicated solely to making craft beer, the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region.
ZX Ventures, the craft beer division of AB InBev, opened the doors to the new facility in Wuhan last week, where it began to produce tipples from three of its leading breweries - Goose Island, Boxing Cat and Kaiba. The classic Goose IPA

Turkey: Anadolu Efes head denies suggesting higher taxes for homebrewed beer
|
The head of Turkey’s top brewery Anadolu Efes has said he had not suggested a tax for “homebrewed beer,” adding that this trend is actually good in order for the beer industry to achieve further growth, the Hurriyet Daily News reported on February 2.
The rising trend among Turks brewing alcoholic beverages at home has hit the sales of a range of drinks in the country, including beer, Anadolu Efes Chair Tuncay Özilhan was quoted as telling a group of journalists in Frankfurt.
He was also quoted to have said this trend has led to a significant decline in tax income, adding that they have shared their views on this issue with authorities.
In a statement on Feb. 2, Özilhan said he had actually mentioned the negative impact on human health from high taxes on alcoholic beverages, as they have led to a significant increase in counterfeit beverage production.
“This dangerous trend has put people’s health at risk and has led to serious tax income. This was actually what I wanted to underline,” Özilhan noted.
He added that he did not mean anything negative by pointing out the rising trend of homebrewed beer in Turkey.
“As Anadolu Efes, we have given great importance to the spread

Ghana: Accra Brewery Limited to inaugurate new packaging line later this year
|
Adwoa Arthur, Director of Legal and Corporate Affairs of Accra Brewery Limited (ABL), says the newly-constructed $25 million packaging line constructed by the company will be inaugurated this year, the Modern Ghana reported on February 5.
About 170 new workers have been employed to maintain the new line.
As a result, Beta Malt, which used to be packaged in a bottle and Stella Artois, a pale lager beer, have also been introduced onto the Ghanaian market.
“We are determined to bring people together, hence the introduction of the new products and production line to serve our clients better.”
Ms Arthur revealed this on Wednesday, January 31 when ABL hosted some journalists at its head office in Accra.
The journalists were taken on tour around the multi-million dollar state-of-the-act facility to familiarize themselves with the company's operations.
ABL started production in 1931 in Ghana and has over the years been upgrading and modernizing its processes in order to remain a leading force on the market.
The brewery company is now owned by AB InBev.
ABL uses maize and cassava that are locally sourced for the production of Eagle and Club Beer, which is the star product.
Local farmers across the regions have been supported immensely to produce the raw materials

After a six-month search, flamboyant Scotland-based brewery BrewDog has announced Brisbane will be the home for its new Australian brewery, Australian Brews News reported on February 6.

USA: US hop production up dramatically since 2012
|
Production of hops has grown dramatically in the United States since 2012, and no more acreage is needed to meet the demand for the plant that flavors beer, US News & World Record reported on February 6.
That's according to a new report from the Yakima-based trade group Hop Growers of America.
Most of the nation's hops are grown in Washington, Idaho and Oregon.
The report says the U.S. has hit a saturation point with production of 104 million pounds last year.
The report says that's a 77 percent increase from 2012.
The report also found that Idaho has surpassed Oregon to become the second-highest hop producing state at 13 percent of the crop. Washington grows 75 percent and Oregon 11 percent.
While global hop demand appears to be on the rise thanks to burgeoning international craft beer cultures, many industry leaders cautioned against additional acreage being added in the U.S. for the 2018 crop. All key indicators suggest current aroma hop demand has largely been satisfied by the unprecedented expansion of U.S. acreage in recent years.
Conversely, many reports also indicate current global alpha inventories are insufficient for market demands as the global brewing industry has finally worked through decade-long surpluses, which had perpetually depressed the
