Hops news USA: US hop production up dramatically since 2012
Production of hops has grown dramatically in the United States since 2012, and no more acreage is needed to meet the demand for the plant that flavors beer, US News & World Record reported on February 6.

That's according to a new report from the Yakima-based trade group Hop Growers of America.

Most of the nation's hops are grown in Washington, Idaho and Oregon.

The report says the U.S. has hit a saturation point with production of 104 million pounds last year.

The report says that's a 77 percent increase from 2012.

The report also found that Idaho has surpassed Oregon to become the second-highest hop producing state at 13 percent of the crop. Washington grows 75 percent and Oregon 11 percent.

While global hop demand appears to be on the rise thanks to burgeoning international craft beer cultures, many industry leaders cautioned against additional acreage being added in the U.S. for the 2018 crop. All key indicators suggest current aroma hop demand has largely been satisfied by the unprecedented expansion of U.S. acreage in recent years.

Conversely, many reports also indicate current global alpha inventories are insufficient for market demands as the global brewing industry has finally worked through decade-long surpluses, which had perpetually depressed the ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Barley stocks drop 6.1% last year
Canada’s stocks of canola at the end of 2017 hit a record high 14.1 million tonnes, while stocks of wheat and barley were smaller compared to the same date a year earlier, according to a farm survey by Statistics Canada released on February 5.

According to Statistics Canada, the nation’s barley stocks as of December 2017 were 6.068 mln tonnes versus 6.462 mln in December 2016 (-6.1%).

The survey of 9,064 Canadian farms was conducted from Jan 3 to 15, 2018.

Brewery news USA, WI: Two breweries on track to open in Menomonie this summer
A pair of breweries are on track to open this summer in downtown Menomonie with one moving into a former railroad depot and the other into a former auto shop, the Leader-Telegram reported on February 3.

Brewery Nonic will be operating from within Menomonie’s former railroad depot, which is currently being restored. Ryan Verdon and Dan Fedderly are pursuing the buildings historic registry as well.

“I’ve been keeping my eye on the depot building for a long time,” Fedderly said.

He said the building has been standing since 1905 and the plan is to restore the historic architecture, but brew and serve inside. The restoration is expected to wrap up by this spring and the business could open early this summer. Fedderly estimates the restoration will cost more than $200,000.

Verdon said the name “Nonic” is an English-style pint glass. The glass is distinct for its bulge near the top. He said that it’s a style of drinkware he is fond of and he also simply likes the name.

The plan is to have eight taps and two cask engines. Beer served from a cask engine involves pumping the beer out without nitrogen or carbon dioxide pressure. Verdon plans to brew all of the beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Chain O’ Lakes Brewing Co. to reopen under new ownership as McHenry Brewing Co.
Chain O’ Lakes Brewing Co. in McHenry has closed, but its new owner plans to reopen under a different name in the spring, the Northwest Herald reported on February 5.

Curt and Linda Ames reopened the historic brewery – which formerly operated as McHenry Brewing Co. – in 2012 and have sold it to Bob Master, who worked at Chain O’ Lakes for three years.

Master, of Woodstock, plans to revert the company to its old name and focus on the history of the space as he completes renovations, he said.

“I will take a historical approach when decorating the tap room, looking to commemorate the state bicentennial and the city’s history,” he said in a note to McHenry City Council members.

The building, 3425 Pearl St., was built in the 1880s. Ames will continue to own the property and rent the space to Master, according to city documents.

“This has been my goal since I got into the industry,” Master said. “I have always wanted to own my own brewery.”

There are several outstanding licenses, but Master said he hopes to reopen the space as McHenry Brewing Co. by St. Patrick’s Day.

McHenry City Council members will consider the transfer of the Chain O’ Lakes liquor ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company coming to downtown Marlborough
Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company, a craft brewery and coffee roastery, plans to open its doors this summer in Downtown Marlborough. The husband and wife team of Melynda and JP Gallagher say they are excited to bring new life to the city and hope to attract both locals and first-time visitors to the downtown area, The Marlborough Patch reported on February 2.

"There is so much going on in Marlborough and as residents of the city we are committed to our community. We want to help create a downtown that people are excited about," said JP in a statement.

JP, a recent graduate of the American Brewers Guild, plans to offer a variety of rotating beer styles, with traditional Belgian and German styles featured along with more experimental beers including New England IPAs and stouts brewed with coffee. Melynda, who studied at the Coffee Lab International, plans to highlight single origin roasts from all over the world using various brewing methods including pour over, espresso, and cold brew. The duo plans to incorporate both brews together in less traditional ways as well.

An onsite taproom will incorporate elements that highlight the city's history as a shoe manufacturing hub. Traditional bar seating and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Corner Point Brewing Co. aiming at June opening in Berwick
Two Mainers are transforming part of a historic Berwick building into a brewery, WGME reported on February 5.

Jamie Blood has been brewing beer for years. It started as a hobby when the Berwick native was living in New Mexico.

"First batch of beer we made, it was with a friend of mine down there, made it together, it was awful," Blood says, "So we were determined to try not to repeat it so we went down and bought a little bit of equipment about two weeks later, we brewed another batch and I was hooked."

After a few more batches, his brother-in-law Jeff Tassinari tasted potential.

"So I encouraged him to make sure that if he ever moved back to Maine, that I'd love to start brewing with him," Tassinari says.

Blood did move back to Maine and they created Corner Point Brewing Co. A Kickstarter campaign raised more than $15,000 so they could go from home brewing to brick and mortar.

"I wasn't back here very long and I read in an article in a local newspaper, the title of the article was 'Berwick, a town beer can save'," says Blood.

It was a sign and soon they found the 19th-century property at 1 Sullivan ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Eagle Park Brewing Co. to move operations to former Like Minds Brewing facility
According to information released on February 5, the Bay View based brewery, Eagle Park Brewing Co., is slated to move its brewing operations into the former Like Minds Brewing Co. space at 823 E. Hamilton St. in Milwaukee. Provided the move goes as planned, the brewery will open by the end of March, OnMilwaukee.com reported.

Like Minds Brewing Co., meanwhile, is laying the groundwork to move into a new location in Bay View.

The brewery, owned by brothers Jack and Max Borgardt and Jake Schinker, was founded in 2015 and has operated its pilot brewery, where recipes are tested and vetted, and tasting room in the Lincoln Warehouse since January 2017. Meanwhile, the beer has been brewed offsite by a local contract brewer.

The acquisition of the assets at the former Like Minds location will allow Eagle Park to bring its beer production in-house, facilitating an expansion of its portfolio, which, moving forward, is expected to include barrel-aged brews. The new location will also feature an expansive tap room (five times the size of the location in Bay View) complete with a full chef-driven menu.

"We are more than just a little excited about our plans for expansion," said Max Borgardt in a statement ...More info on site

Brewery news China: AB InBev opens brewery to produce craft beers in Wuhan
Even during the freezing winter months, nothing seems to stop Chinese beer lovers from grabbing cold brew from the fridge and enjoying a spicy hotpot or barbecue dinner with friends, The Straits Times reported on February 5.

China has grown to become the world's largest consumer market for beer and people nowadays have more diversity than ever to meet their ever-growing tastes. Whether you fancy a glass of the Chinese staple, Tsingtao, or prefer a flavoured Indian Pale Ale (IPA) imported from Britain, there are always pubs, bars and online stores offering a multitude of different beer options.

Brewery news Turkey: Anadolu Efes head denies suggesting higher taxes for homebrewed beer
The head of Turkey’s top brewery Anadolu Efes has said he had not suggested a tax for “homebrewed beer,” adding that this trend is actually good in order for the beer industry to achieve further growth, the Hurriyet Daily News reported on February 2.

The rising trend among Turks brewing alcoholic beverages at home has hit the sales of a range of drinks in the country, including beer, Anadolu Efes Chair Tuncay Özilhan was quoted as telling a group of journalists in Frankfurt.

He was also quoted to have said this trend has led to a significant decline in tax income, adding that they have shared their views on this issue with authorities.

In a statement on Feb. 2, Özilhan said he had actually mentioned the negative impact on human health from high taxes on alcoholic beverages, as they have led to a significant increase in counterfeit beverage production.

“This dangerous trend has put people’s health at risk and has led to serious tax income. This was actually what I wanted to underline,” Özilhan noted.

He added that he did not mean anything negative by pointing out the rising trend of homebrewed beer in Turkey.

“As Anadolu Efes, we have given great importance to the spread ...More info on site
