USA: Fate of several US breweries in jeopardy due to legal issues facing Vijay Mallya
|
The fate of several breweries in the U.S. may be in jeopardy in the wake of the mounting legal issues facing Vijay Mallya, the chairman and indirect majority shareholder of Mendocino Brewing, which owns other breweries throughout the country, the India West reported on February 7.
Already, the Ukiah, Calif.-based Mendocino Brewing Ale House, which had been open for more than 30 years, has closed.
Mallya, who bought the company in 1997 and now lives in London, is battling extradition to India amid fraud and money laundering charges, according to a Press Democrat report.
The brewery is in discussions with an investor to help rescue the company, according to the report.
Past company filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission detail the company’s cash crunch, the publication reported.
Catamaran Services Inc. in Delaware loaned $2.6 million to Mendocino Brewing over a three-year period through June 2017 in addition to interest costs of $301,686, according to documents cited in the report.
The filings also indicate that Mendocino Brewing would pay a $500,000 promissory note along with interest to Catamaran by Jan. 17, it said.

USA, WA: Washington beer production drops 7.7% in 2017
|
Washington breweries produced less beer in 2017 than they did in 2016, marking the first time in seven years that the state’s beer production has decreased. A report from JJL shows that from 2016 to 2017 beer production slipped by 44,895 barrels, a 7.7 percent loss, washingtonbeerblog.com reported on February 8.
This does not mean the sky is falling or that the mythical Washington beer bubble has burst. There is a logical explanation. Still, the fact that beer production in Washington decreased is noteworthy.
The JJL report points out that regardless of this decline in production, the Washington beer industry is still quite healthy. The bulk of the decrease is isolated among a few regional brands. Most notably, Redhook Brewing and Elysian Brewing.
It’s no surprise to hear that Redhook’s numbers were way down: they stopped brewing in Woodinville halfway through the year. Redhook decreased production by 61,553 barrels after decommissioning and selling their production facility in Woodinville, moving production the CBA facility in Portland.
It’s more interesting to hear that Elysian Brewing’s numbers were down. Last year, production dropped by 24,093 barrels. Most beer enthusiasts around Washington will probably find that surprising.

USA, OH: Royal Docks Brewing Co. to open its doors this spring

The new Royal Docks Brewing Co. is a mere 4,500 miles away.
Or maybe it’s only 4,000 by now — or even closer, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on February 8.
The brewery’s Italian-made, 30-barrel Simatec brewhouse is aboard a ship somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea — or perhaps an ocean — sailing to its new home in suburban Canton.
It’s setting up to be a big year for Royal Docks.
Not only is the Jackson Township brewery expecting to fire up its new production brewery this spring, it’s releasing new brands in cans and expanding its distribution back into the Columbus market and for the first time hitting the Dayton and Cincinnati areas with the help of Heidelberg Distributing.
“We’re trying to make some strides,” founder John Bikis said.
Royal Docks, which started out as a brewpub in the Marketplace at Nobles Pond shopping plaza, has been growing steadily since it opened in September 2015. The brewpub is affectionately known as the kitchen and taproom, while the new production brewery will go by the name Royal Docks Brewhouse and Cannery.

USA: Beer distributors facing a dilemma of investing or not into Bud Light marketing
|
Beer distributors in the US are facing a dilemma right now when it comes to Bud Light: sink more money into marketing the brand in the hopes that the short-term loss will lead to long-term loyalty and growth, or cut the advertising and take the boost to the bottom line now, Food Dive reported on February 7.
Consumer tastes have been shifting away from traditional brews in recent years, in favor of craft beer, spirits and wine. This has been especially hard on Big Beer, namely Molson Coors and AB InBev, who together control about 90% of the beverage’s production in the U.S. today.
All four of America's best-selling beers posted declining domestic sales in 2017, according to market research firm IRI. The Washington Post reported that Miller Lite posted a volume decline of 1.6% compared to 5.9% for Budweiser in the U.S. Even smaller craft breweries are starting to feel the pinch, as double-digit growth slowed to 4% in 2016.

USA: MillerCoors targets young consumers with its new light beer line Two Hats
|
MillerCoors has introduced a new light beer line called Two Hats, which is targeted at young consumers in the US, FoodBev.com reported on February 7.
The Two Hats line will initially feature two light beers with subtle lime and pineapple flavours.
The beers have an alcohol content of 4.2% and are available in four and six-packs of 16oz cans.
A suggested retail price has not been confirmed, though Two Hats claims the price of packs will “be about five dollars nationwide.”
Two Hats says the combination of a refreshing flavour and its low price point will make the range an attractive option for young consumers.
Justine Stauffer, Two Hats brand manager said: “We want to give 21- to 24-year-old drinkers, who don’t consider beer to be great-tasting and affordable, an option they can get on board with.
“As soon as people realize that a beer this good is about five dollars, their immediate reaction is, ‘Wait, what?'”
David Kroll, MillerCoors’ chief marketing office added: “We know that people who choose beer when they become of legal drinking age are two times more likely to continue drinking beer throughout their lifetime, and as an organization, we have an opportunity to regain ground with this group.

USA, NJ: Hackensack Brewing Company preparing to open in Hackensack soon
|
Hackensack’s beer lovers may have reason to rejoice as a city resident prepares to open the city’s latest microbrewery, NorthJersey.com reported on February 7.
Hackensack resident Mike Jones plans to open up Hackensack Brewing Company in a warehouse on Johnson Avenue. His application was approved on February 7 by the city Planning Board.
Jones' hops-fueled journey to open his own brewery started in, of all places, a closet in a Hackensack high-rise apartment, where he fermented his first batch of beer.
"I brewed up a batch in a tiny, one-bedroom apartment," said Jones, 39. "That first batch came out really good, and I think, like anybody who brews beer, you immediately have the dream of having a brewery."
As with most people who get to drink free beer, his friends sang his homebrews' praises, Jones said. It wasn't until Jones started submitting some of his beers to competitions and winning that he thought there might be some truth to it.
In 2016, two of Jones' beers, the Fairmount IPA, named for the city neighborhood, and a dark German lager both won medals at the New Jersey State Fair. His lager was awarded the gold medal in the dark European lager category.

USA, MI: Territorial Brewing Company establishes another brewing facility in Springfield
|
Territorial Brewing Company is expanding its territory.
To meet increased demands for its lager, the company has established a new brewing facility just a quarter mile away from the original taproom on Helmer Road in Springfield, the Battle Creek Enquirer reported on February 7.
The first batch of beer was brewed at the new production facility in December. Before that, beer was being brewed inside the same space that houses the restaurant kitchen.
“The space was incredibly cramped, and we were constantly getting in the way of the kitchen staff, and vice versa,” Tim Davis, co-owner of Territorial, in a news release. “In fact, it got so bad that we resorted to only brewing beer at night, when the kitchen was closed. This new location will allow us to brew beer on a more consistent schedule and keep up with demand.”
Some small-batch brewing will continue at the restaurant location as well.
The new facility won’t be open to the public, but moving the majority of the brewing out of the original location will allow Territorial to expand the restaurant and taproom a bit.
Davis said the brewery plans to add outdoor seating for the summer and extend the parking lot.

USA, NY: The Buried Acorn Brewing Co. expects to launch in Syracuse in late spring or early summer
|
It’s taken almost two years to get The Buried Acorn Brewing Co. up and running - and it’s still not quite there, Syracuse.com reported on February 6.
But that deliberate timetable sort of fits the theme for Syracuse’s next brewery.
Buried Acorn expects to open a brewery and taproom in late spring or early summer at 881 Van Rensselaer St., at the corner of Hiawatha Boulevard in the Inner Harbor. It’s just down Hiawatha from Destiny USA.
When it opens, it will be the 15th brewery operating in Onondaga County.
While owners and brewers Tim Shore and Sam Kim will make some “standard” beers like IPAs and stouts, they will specialize in barrel-aged beers, plus sours, farmhouse ales, and various Belgian styles that often require extra time and attention.
Some of those beers are already aging in used wine barrels at the brewery.
“We’re going to be a mixed fermentation brewery, with a Belgian focus,” Shore said. “But in the end I think we’ll make ales of almost any kind you can think of.”

USA, CO: Former Triple S brewing in Colorado Springs to launch as Brass Brewing on March 15
|
The former Triple S Brewing in Colorado Springs has a new owner, name and opening date.
Wayne “Woody” Briggs and wife Kellee co-own Brass Brewing Co., which they plan to soft-open on Thursday, March 15, with a grand opening the following day, the Colorado Springs Independent reported on February 7.
Briggs has been a homebrewer for five years, and brewers Kevin Glaspie and Brian Faulkner have a combined 21 years as homebrewers. It’s their first time as pros, but Faulkner and Briggs have been training at Aurora’s Launch Pad Brewery for one and two years, respectively. Glaspie’s also been working with JAKs Brewing Company brewer Andre Blyth.

The Philippines: San Miguel may be facing valuation issues due to consolidation of its drinks and food businesses
|
San Miguel has an alcohol problem. The Philippine conglomerate run by billionaire Ramon Ang is consolidating its beer and liquor businesses with its Manila-listed producer of meat, poultry and feed. A complex share swap suggests the enlarged San Miguel Pure Foods would be worth some $9.1 billion. It trades at a discount, however, the Global Times reported on February 6.
The sprawling parent company decided, with advice from adviser ING Bank, that the newly conceived consumer group warranted a hefty premium. It determined that Pure Foods shares would be fairly valued at nearly 793 pesos ($15.4) apiece for the deal instead of the 308 where they were trading. That meant issuing 4.2 billion shares, with a notional value of 336 billion pesos, to buy 51 percent of unlisted San Miguel Brewery and 76 percent of Ginebra San Miguel from San Miguel Corp.
Investors have been warming to the valuation, with Pure Foods stock roughly doubling since the combination was announced in November. That's understandable. Russia: Russian farmers to increase spring barley plantings this year
|
According to preliminary information of the regional agricultural authorities in Russia, the nation’s 2018 grain plantings will total 80.4 mln ha, which is up 187.4 thousand ha from 2017 (80.2 mln ha), UkrAgroConsult reported on February 6.
It is projected to seed 53.4 mln ha to spring crops (100.1% of last year’s 53.3 mln ha). Growers are going to sow spring cereals and pulses on 31 mln ha, which is 99.6% of last year’s 31.2 mln ha.
Farmers are expected to increase plantings of spring barley by 102.3 thousand ha (to 7637 thousand ha), pulses by 147.6 thousand ha (to 2396.9 thousand ha) and millet acreage by 21.2 thousand ha (to 289.3 thousand ha), it is reported.
As a reminder, Russian winter cereal plantings for the 2018 harvest totalled 17.1 mln ha (17.4 mln ha in 2017). According to the agricultural authorities in Russia’s regions, 94.8% of them are in good and fair condition.

Denmark: Carlsberg creates two exclusive cask-conditioned Jacobsen beers for Danish restaurants

Two new high-end cask-conditioned Jacobsen beers have been specially created for the restaurant industry in an innovative collaboration between Carlsberg and researchers from the Nordic Food Lab. The cask-conditioned Jacobsen beers are destined for the thriving Nordic gourmet scene and the recipe is the result of five years’ work as the partnership first began in 2013, FoodIngredientsFirst reported on February 6.
The Jacobsen Chanterelle Lager and Jacobsen Sour Rye beers have been fermented in Carlsberg’s Jacobsen brewhouse and conditioned in 37.5cl champagne bottles.
The ambition is to establish an exclusive series of eminent cask-conditioned Jacobsen beers for Danish restaurants. The first high-end beer is now available at one of Denmark’s Michelin-starred restaurants, Tri Trin Ned in Jutland.
The aim of the project is to develop innovative beers by experimenting with new raw materials, methods and sensory profiles that can increase the relevance of beer for today’s experimental gastronomy on the Danish restaurant scene.

Spain: Heineken planning 220 jobs cut in Spain
|
Heineken plans to cuts 220 jobs across it base in Spain, as it looks to streamline its sales and production in the country, Plastics in Packaging reported on February 7.
The Dutch business explained that it has started discussions over positions in Seville, Valencia and Madrid as well as a few other of its Spanish offices.
It employs 2,600 people in Spain and puts the cuts down to efficiency and continuous improvement. “This is a common transformation process in companies operating in dynamic and changing environments,” said a company statement.
Heineken recently expanded outside of Europe, with the investment of €100 million ($124m) on the construction of a brewery in Mozambique.

Africa: Heineken looking to achieve more brand equity in Africa
|
Heineken says it has gained more brand equity in Nigeria and is looking to achieve same in 15 other African markets through investments in the brand, The Punch reported on February 8.
The company said it had also increased its share of the beer market following the launch of a new commercial- Villager.
The company said in a statement that was in the process of rolling out the same investment in the other African markets where it has presence.
The 58 seconds commercial, created by Insight Publicis, featured Jidenna Mobisson, the Nigerian-born international act. The commercial is the brand’s first globalised commercial and first Nigerian campaign.

North Korea: North Korea reportedly creates wheat beer with ‘exclusive’ brewing technique

North Korea has reportedly created its own domestic beer with a brewing technique touted as exclusive, the BBC reported on February 6.
The British news site quoted the reclusive country's state newspaper Rodong Sinmun, which said that the beer was brewed by local brewery Taedonggang with wheat instead of barley.
This technique is said to be "better than existing beers in terms of taste and smell" and has already "gained positive reviews" from locals.
The Taedonggang Beer Factory is a state-owned factory, reportedly one it bought from Britain in 2000 and shifted to Pyongyang.
In 2009, news of an advertisement for Taedonggang beer on state TV made headlines.
The ad for the beer, which was made of rice and contained protein and vitamin B2, was a surprise as there were said to be no TV advertisements in the country.
A South Korean Unification Ministry official who had been monitoring the North's television for more than two decades said then that it was the first time he had seen any advertisement for food, much less beer - although he had seen shows on North Korean cuisine.
