WHAT IS THE IMPACT OF POLLINATED HOPS IN BEER?
ABSTRACT
In the world of hops, the male plants are mostly
considered as gate-crashers and utilised only for
controlled pollination. In English hops, pollinated cones
are accepted, however over the centuries prejudices
have been established that seeded hops decrease
flavour stability due to increased amounts of fatty acids
and also cause lower alpha acid concentration. These
German researchers were able to show in comparative
brewing trials with seeded and unseeded hops that these
two points are not necessarily true. However they also
discovered that the beers with seeded hops showed a
higher beta-glucosidase activity, though a higher content
of aroma active compounds and a higher aroma intensity
in the beers could not be shown. So there is maybe too
much ado about nothing.

USA: Molson Coors’ worldwide sales up 0.2% in 2017
|
Despite continued negative domestic volume trends for its flagship light lager brands, Molson Coors’ worldwide sales increased 0.2 percent to more than $11 billion in 2017, according to company earnings released on February 14.
In 2017, Molson Coors’ global brand volumes increased 1 percent while its revenues per hectolitre were up 2.6 percent, which the company credited to “revenue management and portfolio premiumization.”
The company also shared fourth-quarter highlights, including a 4.5 percent increase in global net sales to about $2.6 billion and a 5.8 percent increase in revenues per hectoliter. However, global brand volumes decreased 1.1 percent during the quarter.
Molson Coors’ full-year domestic sales to wholesalers (STWs) declined 3.3 percent compared to 2016. Sales to retailers (STRs) were down 2.9 percent, which the company attributed to lower volumes in the premium light and below premium segments.
Meanwhile, for the three months ending December 31, the company’s STWs declined by 1.5 percent while its STRs declined 3 percent.
In a press release, Molson Coors president and CEO Mark Hunter said the company was able to deliver “financial and commercial results” despite “a backdrop of integration and challenging market conditions during 2017.” He added that the company “over-delivered on cost savings and free cash flow”

USA: Speciality hop market sent to bust by slowdown in craft beer sales
|
A sharp slowdown in US craft beer sales growth has sent the speciality hop market from boom to bust with its effects starting to be felt by growers beyond its shores, the Financial Times reported.
The fall comes as growers both in the US, the world’s leading hop producer and exporter, and abroad have increased their planting areas as the number of craft brewers increased rapidly, causing demand to surge for popular aroma varieties.
“People [in the hop industry] are very concerned; this is a problem that’s affecting everybody,” said Douglas MacKinnon, chief executive of trader 47hops in Yakima Valley in Washington, a leading producing area. The hop merchant was forced to file for Chapter 11 creditor protection last year as buyers reneged on their contracts and cash flow dried up.
Many of the hop varieties popular among craft beer makers have plunged from their peaks between 2015 and 2016. For example, Citra, known for its smooth floral and citrus aroma and flavour, has almost halved from $23 a pound, according to Lupulin Exchange, a US online hop exchange.
“The [price declines] are widespread,” said John Bryce at Lupulin, which is planning to expand into the UK this year.
Another variety, Cascade, was trading at

Canada, BC: British Columbia’s craft industry may be threatened by takeovers, legal cannabis
|
Craft beer has become popular enough in B.C. that some small- to medium-sized breweries have become targets for acquisition by large multinational companies, CBC.ca reported on February 12.
"There are taps on the door," said Darryll Frost, president of Central City Brewers + Distillers, about interest in his company. It's been in operation in Surrey, B.C., since 2003.
What he's talking about is a desire from large international brewing companies like Anheuser-Busch InBev or Japan's Sapporo to acquire smaller breweries in order to regain the market share they've lost.
Statistics Canada has, for the past five years, recorded lethargic domestic beer sales overall, but growth attributed to craft beer due to how it caters to discerning drinkers' desire for quality and variety.
"Craft" beer is a difficult term to define, but is usually regarded as beer brewed by smaller-scale breweries using traditional techniques without any preservatives and with a high proportion of malted barley in each recipe.
Statistics Canada says smaller breweries in B.C. increased sales by 51.75 per cent between 2014 and 2015.
Big brewing companies have registered these success stories and are now actively buying craft breweries across Canada.
In B.C., Granville Island Brewing is part of Molson Coors, Okanagan Spring Brewery is the property

USA, OH: Cloven Hoof Brewing Co.’s owner shooting to open it by late summer or early fall
|
Ryan Sposito said he started brewing beer five years ago in his Harbor District apartment in Ashtabula — he first made a simple, no-malt recipe cooked up in a home bag kit. This year, he looks to make his mark with his own local nanobrewery, The Star Beacon reported on February 12.
Sposito said he’s shooting to open Cloven Hoof Brewing Co. by late summer or early fall in a long-vacant former city building he’s leasing in the Harbor District. He obtained seed funding through the local New Entrepreneur Opportunity Fund for renovations and utility work at the space, which are now permitted and getting underway.
Sposito said he’s already filed for a federal liquor license, after which he can pursue a state license. The brewery’s plans call for a window-facing concrete bar and a 46-foot, L-shaped wooden bar further inside, with a gothic industrial design mentality to match the brewery’s name.
“Cloven Hoof” was the name of a band he started with his older brother, Jake, when they both first picked up the guitar. Jake died from brain cancer in 2013.
“When he passed and I came up with this idea, I thought of the name and it seemed so fitting,” he said.

USA, SC: Tetrad Brewing Company coming to Greenville soon
|
Another brewery is coming to the Stone Avenue corridor in Greenville, the Upstate Business Journal reported on February 9.
Liability Brewing Co. was announced last fall for the Westone project at 109 W. Stone Ave., and on the other side of the Church Street overpass, Tetrad Brewing Company has signed a lease for the 3,368-square-foot ground-floor space in the future Half-Moon Outfitters location, 603. E Stone Ave.
Grayson Burgess with The Burgess Company represented the owner, Half-Moon, and Rakan Draz of Avison Young represented Tetrad in the transaction.
“Consistent with their mission, Half-Moon Outfitters purchased the building to renovate in as green a manner as is possible with the possibility and goal of achieving net-zero energy consumption (the solar tariff being an important new variable),” Burgess says. “The possibility also existed to attract a tenant that would be a great and complementary fit with the vision of Half-Moon. We are confident we found that with Tetrad brewery.”
SHLTR Architects principal Tara Hile is the lead on the design for the renovations, which should be competed by June 1.
Tetrad, co-owned by brothers-in-law Chad Tydings and John Bucher, will be a micro-brewery with a heavy emphasis on the taproom experience. With Bucher as the head brewer,

USA, CT: Five Churches Brewing getting ready to open in New Britain
|
Within less than a year New Britain, CT went from having no breweries since the closing of Cremo Brewing Co. in the 1950s, to now getting ready to open its second craft beer hot spot, the New Britain Herald reported on February 9.
Five Churches Brewing at 193 Arch St. is not set to open for another five weeks, but the Herald got a sneak peek into what’s to come.
The brewery is located on the second floor. The small lobby area on the street level will eventually be used as retail space for merchandise, and a staircase that leads up to the taproom.
At the top of the stairs, the brewery’s floor plan is open with a wood brick oven, a bar counter and plenty of room where tables will soon fill. In the rear portion is the brew area and storage.
Exposed brick, reclaimed wood, pendant lights, steel beams and exposed pipes keep with the building’s industrial past.
“We didn’t want to take away from the feeling you got a year ago when you walked up here,” Michael Barillaro, one of several business partners, said.
What makes Five Churches unique are the large windows that surround the taproom that give view to five church

Canada, BC: Calgary’s Legend 7 Brewing serving up great beers and great stories
|
Legend 7 Brewing, the latest craft brewery to join Calgary's newly emerging "Barley Belt" isn't just serving up great beers, it's serving up great stories too, Benzinga reported on February 8.
The brewery launched with contemporary takes on classic beer styles, with a Czech Pilsner, Robust Porter and American Pale Ale among the first brews to be shipped.
However what sets Legend 7 Brewing apart from the craft crowd, is that each of their beers comes with its own backstory based around iconic mythologies from human history.
"Each of the offerings is tied to the mystery and myth of the number seven," says Bruce Dean, the man behind the brewing brand. "From the Seven Deadly Sins to the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, for centuries humans have been fascinated by the number's significance and we wanted to bring some of that mythology to our beers."
The three beers available upon launch include:
Serpens Pilsner - A bright golden beer with Saaz hops and balanced by rich maltiness; this pilsner tells a tale of envy, the sixth of seven deadly sins.
Dark Gate Porter - A complex blend of dark malts with coffee and chocolate notes. This beer dives into the story of Hades' lust for

USA, VA: Black Narrows Brewery to become Virginia Eastern Shore’s first craft brewery
|
Virginia’s Eastern Shore is finally seeing its very first craft brewery in Chincoteague, vmdt.com reported on February 8.
Black Narrows Brewery hopes to add economic growth and agricultural production to the area.
For some background, the owners used to vacation on the island and they wanted to fulfill their dreams of opening up a shop on Chincoteague. Well their dreams have come true!
Beyond serving up seven beers on tap, they hope to serve the community as well.
For the owners, Chincoteague has always been a home away from home and they wanted to give Black Narrows that same feel.
They said they are focusing on local and seasonal beers rather than one particular style.
For Valentines Day weekend, the island is hosting an event called "Death by Chocolate" and they are releasing a cocoa bean infused stout for the big event.

USA, OK: Broken Arrow Brewing Company expects to open sometime in March
|
A few Broken Arrow boys are brewing up history, soon to be opening up the first brewery in the city of Broken Arrow, kjrh.com reported on February 12.
The building on Dallas Street built back in 1906 has Broken Arrow bleeding through it.
An old power plant run down, these guys put their blood, sweat, and beers in it to create the Broken Arrow Brewing Company.
Head brewer, Austin Ferguson, started on the idea with his father-in-law and now partner, Bud.
Bud has been home-brewing for more than 30 years, and Ferguson started to impress Bud's daughter, who is now his wife.
The two, plus partner Jason Northern, made their vision of seven years a reality.
They will be a five barrel brew house producing about 40 barrels a month.
The plan to start out with traditional style beers like kettle sours, New England IPA's, and eventually brew barrel aged beers.
They've tested their recipes several times making sure they're unique and have a community feel to the names.
"Kind of look over recipes, make sure that what we’re doing doesn’t have too many redundancies or over-hoppy," said Northern.
Both Ferguson and Northern were laid off from their jobs back before Christmas. They took the news as a sign to

USA, MI: Plans for Schmucks Brewing Company in Howell progress as brewer’s licence gets approval from township board
|
Plans for a new brewing company in Howell Township progressed on Monday, February 12 as the township board approved three licenses, WHMI reported.
For nearly four years Brad Jonckheere has been working towards bringing a new brewery to Howell Township. Jonckheere, who also brews for Block Brewing Company in Howell, is in the process of turning a vacant office building on Mason Road into Schmucks Brewing Company.
Jonckheere described the future brewery as a fun neighborhood hangout geared towards families featuring food, craft beers, wines, and spirits along with both indoor and outdoor activities. In order to move forward, Jonckheere addressed the Howell Township board members on February 12 seeking approval for a Micro Brewer, Small Wine Maker, and Small Distiller license. The board unanimously approved all three licenses. The three licenses will allow the brewery to brew and serve several thousand barrels of alcohol each year.
With all three licenses gaining approval, Jonckheere said he looks forward to taking the next steps in getting his brewery up-and-running. He told WHMI his next steps include funding and construction. Jonckheere hopes to have Schmucks functioning by the summer of 2019.

USA, MA: Rising Glass Brewery submits application to North Adams’ Planning Board
|
A local brewer is planning to open North Adams’ second farmer brewery in the former Eagles Hall on Curran Highway, iBerkshires.com reported.
In his application to the Planning Board, Jonathan Spinney said the 10-barrel Rising Glass Brewery would have a tap room and entertainment space along with commissary kitchen.
"We plan to self-distribute and apply for a pouring license to be able to serve beer by the glass," he wrote. "A canning line will be installed in the brewery to facilitate reaching the larger craft beer audience."
Rising Glass would apply for a farmer brewery license that would allow it to produce and serve beer onsite and to retail establishments with a focus on using local ingredients. Bright Ideas Brewing, which opened a couple years ago, operates on the same kind of license.
Plans are to remove and rebuild the entire front wall and relocate the main entrance to the south side. Spinney said the roof and wall are in poor condition and need to be rebuilt to raise the height of the ceiling to fit the brewing equipment. Steel and glass will be used in the reconstruction.
The bathrooms and hall will remain but the kitchen

USA, CA: Hermosa Beach Brewing Co. is South Bay’s newest brewery
|
The South Bay’s newest brewery is also the only one not to brew its craft beer on site, The Daily Breeze reported on February 12.
Hermosa Beach Brewing Co., which occupies the small space once home to boutique German beer hall concept Brat & Brau near the Underground Pub and Grill at 1342 Hermosa Ave., contracts with established breweries to make the beers the two co-owners perfected as home brewers.
“We’re doing gypsy brewing or nomadic brewing, as we like to call it,” said Dave Davis, who along with business partner Jorge Delgado have lived in the beach cities for 17 years. “We have developed 30-some beer recipes and we are leasing time from other breweries and brewing in those breweries.”
It’s a function of a quirk in the funky city’s zoning laws that the brewery was forced to produce its half-dozen brews (so far) off-site.
There’s only one small light-manufacturing area in Hermosa Beach occupied largely by surfboard shapers and auto detailers. A production brewery is allowed, but not a retail tap room. And although there’s limited retail business going on there, it’s a grey area.
Not wanting to deal with an uphill battle against the municipal bureaucracy to get zoning codes changed

USA, CA: Stone Brewing sues MillerCoors over Keystone Light rebrand
|
California’s Stone Brewing Co. has filed a lawsuit against MillerCoors over its emphasis of the word “stone” in its Keystone Light rebrand, calling it a “surprisingly bold” and “disconcerting” appropriation of its own name, The Drinks Business reported.
It follows the rebranding of MillerCoors Keystone Light beer to emphasise the “Stone” rather than the “Key” in its name, which Stone Brewing says demonstrates intention to create confusion in the marketplace with their own brand.
Filing a lawsuit on Monday, Dominic Engels, Stone Brewing CEO, claimed that Keystone’s rebranding is “no accident”, and that the big beer company had tried to register their name years ago but was rejected.
“Now its marketing team is making 30-pack boxes stacked high with nothing but the word ‘STONE’ visible,” he said. “Same for Keystone’s social media, which almost uniformly has dropped the ‘Key.’ We will not stand for this kind of overtly and aggressively deceptive advertising. Frankly, MillerCoors should be ashamed.”
Stone Brewing’s lawsuit was accompanied by a YouTube video featuring Greg Koch, co-founder and executive chairman of Stone Brewing, who describes the actions of MillerCoors as “surprisingly bold” and “disconcerting”, stating that in the world of beer “the name Stone is ours”.
“My partner Steve Wagner and I

Australia: AB InBev’s Pirate Life to build the largest craft brewery in South Australia
|
Craft brewer Pirate Life has announced it will develop a A$15 mln site at Port Adelaide, creating the largest craft brewery in the state of South Australia, the Business Chief Australia reported on February 13.
The company was recently acquired by the world’s largest beer producing company, Belgium’s AB InBev, and it appears its mammoth spending power is being put into practice.
Pirate Life wants to nearly quadruple its output from 3 mln to 11 mln litres annually. It currently produces a range of different beer, from stouts and IPAs to golden ale and American-style hoppy pale ales.
Set up in 2014, Pirate Life has grown enormously in a short time, shown by the fact it produced just 600,000 litres in its first year compared to the 11 mln litres it now wants to make.
Co-founder Red Proudfoot told ABC: “We've been looking around for a new site for quite a while, looked at a number of locations, loved the Port and identified this gorgeous old wool store.”
He was joined in setting up the company by two fellow Western Australians, who decided that South Australia was the best base to grow the company from. Pirate Life already exports to the likes of

Ireland: Growth of whiskey sales leads to increased demand for Irish barley and malt
|
The continuing global growth in Irish whiskey sales means that ensuring a sustainable future supply of barley and malt is critical to the continued growth of Irish whiskey, according to the Irish Whiskey Association.
Irish whiskey represents a third of the value of all Irish drinks exports. It is estimated that nearly 120 million bottles (10 million cases) were sold in 2017, worth over €600 million in exports from Ireland, up 20% from 2016.
Speaking at the Heritage Malting Barley Seminar in Celbridge, Co. Kildare, this week, William Lavelle, head of the Irish Whiskey Association, said that the industry aims to maintain this growth. He said that the industry’s 2014 target to double sales from €6 million cases to 12 million by 2020 is on target to being met and exceeded.
He asserted, “Consumers have acquired a taste for new, premium whiskey and are willing to spend more on innovative products that have a distinct character and heritage. Irish whiskey has those qualities. In 2014 there were just four whiskey distilleries in the country. Today there are eighteen, and we expect that number to surpass thirty by 2020 to meet growing international demand.
“The growth of the Irish whiskey industry is good news not

The Philippines: San Miguel Corp planning largest ever equity deal in the Philippines
|
San Miguel Corp., the biggest Philippine company by revenue, has asked investment banks to pitch for a role in a planned sale of shares in its listed food business this year, Bloomberg reported on February 13 citing people with knowledge of the matter.
The conglomerate is expected to appoint advisers as soon as the end of this month, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. The offering of San Miguel Pure Foods Co. stock could raise around $1.5 billion, though the exact size is still under discussion, the people said.
San Miguel President Ramon Ang said in a mobile phone text message on February 13 he confirms the information, without elaborating. A share sale would boost Pure Foods’s public float after a deal combining San Miguel’s food, beer and liquor businesses under a single publicly-traded company, the people said. Pure Foods will be worth an estimated $9 billion to $10 billion following that transaction, Ang said in November.
A $1.5 billion offering would be the largest ever equity deal in the Philippines, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. It would take the crown from the so-called re-IPO of billionaire Lucio Tan’s holding company LT
