THIOL POTENCY IS 100! TRY IT!

ABSTRACT
An impressive theoretical approach is being undertaken by French researchers, whom are experts in analysing thiols and thiol precursors in beer, malt and hops. For a couple of years, brewing scientists show that these fruity thiols are key aroma compounds with extremely low flavour thresholds. However the free form of these thiols varies significantly among hop varieties and also in beer. The potential of the thiol aroma compounds is extremely high, however the majority of these compounds is linked to larger protein-type molecules and only released by specific enzyme activity. In this work, a calculation is proposed to determine the thiol potential for the three compounds 3MH, 3MHA, 4MMP. Hop varieties with a high free potential would be more suitable for dry hopping while hop varieties with a high bound potential are more suitable for an earlier addition. The hypothesis is very fascinating but needs to be further investigated with brewing trials. If a strong sensory correlation is established, the proposed "thiol potency values" could provide great value to brewers.

Brewery news USA: Craft beer sales estimated to have grown 6% last year
Sales of craft beer grew 6 percent in the U.S. last year, industry consultant Bump Williams shared during the Brewers Association Power Hour on March 1. And that growth, Williams said, is not coming from mainstream craft brands, but new local brewers as well as strong regional and national players like Bell’s Brewery, Stone Brewing, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, and Allagash, among others, Brewbound reported on March 2.

“This long tail of craft is the growth engine right now with an awful lot of room to grow,” he said.

That was just one takeaway from Williams’ presentation, titled “Hard Times,” which provided an overview of 2017 data from market research firm IRI Worldwide.

“As rough and tough and challenging as I think it’s been in the past, my feeling is it’s going to get a whole lot harder,” he said, referencing data from IRI’s multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) universe of stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military).

Here are four key takeaways from Williams’ talk.

Keeping with the “Hard Times” theme, Williams laid out several headwinds in 2018 for craft brewers, including tougher access to market via traditional distribution channels and lack of consumer brand loyalty. He added that craft brewers would have an ...More info on site

Brewery news South Africa: AB InBev to report on South Africa commitments in the next few weeks
Brewing multinational Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) would in the next few weeks release a comprehensive report on the various public interest commitments agreed with the South African government, AB InBev Africa and SAB Zone President Ricardo Tadeu said on March 1.

The public interest commitments include a R1billion investment over five years in areas such as agriculture as well as enterprise and supplier development.

As part of the conditions for the deal, AB InBev also undertook that there would be no job losses as a result of the transaction.

The company and the Department of Economic Development agreed on the public interest conditions after Minister of Economic Development Ebrahim Patel intervened in the merger between AB InBev and SAB.

The report, the first of several in the next five years, will give indications of the initial social and economic benefits of the mega-transaction between the two major brewers.

Speaking to journalists in Johannesburg about the company’s first year of operating in Africa, Tadeu said that the company’s report on the public interest commitments was in final stages of approval.

“We have to report (on the public interest commitments) for the next five years. We have a board that we report to. There is constant follow-up,” he ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev cautions President Trump against imposing tariffs on aluminium imports
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest beer maker, cautioned U.S. President Donald Trump on March 1 against rushing into imposing tariffs on aluminum imports, Reuters reported.

Trump has vowed to take steps to crack down on imports of steel and aluminum and has been considering imposing hefty tariffs or quotas on imports of the metals from China and other countries under a national security law.

The U.S. brewing industry uses aluminum in about half of cans and bottles.

“So if you do something drastic in aluminum it could impact the industry,” AB InBev chief executive Carlos Brito told a news conference.

Brito said his company would welcome policies that encouraged people to invest in the United States and boost employment.

“We hope that whatever is done in aluminum is along those lines because if it’s not it’s going to be something that’s going to put jobs at risk and would be against the U.S. consumer,” Brito said.

Barley news France: Barley, wheat crop ratings fall from last week
The condition of winter crops in France deteriorated last week to hit a four-year low, ahead of a sharp drop in temperatures recorded this week in the bloc’s largest grain producer, Reuters reported on March 2.

Farm office FranceAgriMer said on March 2 that 83 percent of French soft wheat was in good or excellent condition by Feb. 26, down from 85 percent a week earlier and 93 percent a year ago.

That was the lowest level of good and excellent crop conditions at this point of the season since 2014.

A bitter cold snap worsened in Western Europe this week raising concerns of damage to crops although crop analysts had expected little impact in France and said it may even help diminish the threat from pests and diseases.

For winter barley, FranceAgriMer said 80 percent of the crop was in good or excellent condition by Feb. 26 versus 82 percent a week earlier and 90 percent at the same point last year, while 77 percent of the durum wheat was in good or excellent condition versus 79 percent a week earlier and 82 percent last year.

Winter barley and durum conditions also recorded the weakest conditions seen at this point of the season since ...More info on site

Barley news Ukraine: January barley exports almost twice as high as in December 2017
Ukraine exported 140.8 thousand tonnes of barley in January 2018, i.e. almost twice as much as it shipped abroad in December 2017 (72.1 thousand tonnes), but 13% less than in the same month a year ago (161.7 thousand tonnes was exported in January 2017), UkrAgroConsult reported on March 1.

Ukrainian exporters supplied 3.95 mln tonnes of barley to foreign markets in the first seven months of the current season, which is is down 12% year-on-year (4.47 mln tonnes was exported in July-January 2016/17).

In January, the bulk of Ukrainian barley was shipped to Saudi Arabia, the European Union and Libya. The share of Turkey continues expanding. Ukraine supplied some 148 thousand tonnes of barley to this market at the time, i.e. 11% more than for the entire last season.

A substantial surge in Ukrainian barley shipments to China (790 thousand tonnes, or up 263% from MY 2016/17) has entailed a drop in supplies to end markets such as Libya, Israel, Jordan, Tunisia and others.

Barley news Australia: Barley Australia announces successful accreditation of two new malting barley varieties
The Board of Barley Australia announces the successful accreditation of two new varieties: Spartacus CL IGB 1334T and Compass WI4593.

These two varieties are from InterGrain in Western Australia and The University of Adelaide, respectively. The varieties were accredited as Malting Barley following the evaluation trials conducted in association with the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC) assessment under the malting barley evaluation process.

Spartacus barley processed in a similar manner to La Trobe and is mostly comparable in malt quality, with the agronomic advantage of imidazolinone herbicide tolerance. It is well suited to export markets requiring this style of barley where starch-adjunct brewing is undertaken.

Compass presented as a barley with improved agronomic characteristics over Commander, and with similar malt quality. It is most suited to producing malt for brewers with a medium fermentability and can be utilised in both sugar- and starch-adjunct brewing. Hence this variety is well suited for many domestic and export markets.

As with all previous accreditations, it is the market that will determine the success of these new varieties. The Barley Australia malting barley evaluation and accreditation process is recognized as the required standard for the determination of malting barley for all new Australian malting barley varieties.

Hops news Australia: Hop Products Australia kicks off 2018 harvest
Hop Products Australia (HPA) has kicked off its 2018 harvest, starting at its Rostrevor Hop Gardens farm in Victoria, before starting at the Bushy Park Estates farm in Tasmania next week, The Shout reported on March 2.

HPA is Australia’s largest hop grower and accounts for around 90 per cent of Australia’s total hop production; HPA farms have been growing hops for over 150 years in Tasmania and for over 120 years in Victoria.

The company said that it is expecting to see an increase in this year’s hop harvest, with an estimated yield of 1445 metric tonnes. This forecast would represent a 21 per cent increase on last year’s harvest and a 100 per cent increase over the last four years.

HPA’s Managing Director, Tim Lord said: “This is a very exciting time for us on farm and as a business, as HPA has recently invested heavily in order to see the operation and yield grow year upon year.
