Brewery news USA: Bland beer is still the king despite quick rise of popularity of craft beers
Although craft beer has experienced explosive market growth over the past 25 years, the vast majority of Americans still don't drink it.

Only about 1 in 8 beers sold in America is a craft beer. For the first time, the three best-selling beers in America are light beers: Bud Light, Coors Light and Miller Lite. Bud Light alone has a greater market share than all craft beers combined, MENAFN.COM reported on March 13.

So while the selection has broadened dramatically, most people's tastes have not. Even craft beer companies are adjusting to this reality: A recent Chicago Tribune article noted that craft breweries are releasing beers that are 'less hoppy and in-your-face' in order to appeal to the majority of Americans who prefer 'big corporate lagers.'

In other words, they're brewing blander beers.

How did Americans come to prefer such bland beer? The unique history of the U.S. temperance movement might bear some responsibility for country's exceptionally bland beer.

Unlike European countries with beer preferences and styles that have evolved over centuries, America lacks a homegrown brewing tradition.

The classic American beer is an 'adjunct pilsner,' which means that some of the malted barley is replaced with corn or rice. The effect is a beer that's ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NH: Smuttynose Brewing Co sold at an auction for $8.25 mln
The struggling New Hampshire microbrewery Smuttynose sold for $8.25 million on Friday, March 9, NBC10 Boston reported.

Provident Bank purchased the brewery at an auction at Smuttynose Brewing Co.'s Hampton facility on March 9, according to Seacoastonline. It wasn't immediately clear what this means for the brewery's future.

Following the auction, Provident Bank said it is in talks with seven potential buyers. A Smuttynose spokeswoman said the brewery will continue operating while the bank negotiates a sale.

The sale includes the Smuttynose beer brand, its facility and a restaurant. Bidders had to present $250,000 to register for the auction.

Smuttynose employs 68 people. The company says the brewery is capable of producing 75,000 barrels and generating more than $10 million annually. However, in the last year it has been running at 50 percent capacity.

Owner Peter Egelston says the company's financial models were based on 20 years of consistent growth. He says as the marketplace stabilizes, Smuttynose can regain its footing with a major infusion of capital.

Brewery news USA, WI: Melms Brewing Company to open its doors on March 17
The latest addition to the local brewery scene has roots that go way, way, way back into Milwaukee’s brewing history, the Milwaukee Magazine reported on March 12.

The March 17th grand opening of Melms Brewing Company (418 Merton Ave., Hartland) should be sponsored by Ancestry.com.

The original Melms Brewery, founded by C.T. Melms, set up shop in Walker’s Point in the late 1850s and by the 1860s was the largest beer producer in Milwaukee. Unfortunately, Melms died in 1869, the brewery was purchased by Best Brewing Company, and it appeared that Melms would be a footnote in beer history.

Milwaukee native Bob Stack decided not to let that happen. The great, great, great, great nephew of Melms put in motion a plan to resurrect the rich brewing history.

“About seven years ago I came to understand how important (C.T. Melms) and Melms Brewing were in Milwaukee’s brewing history,” said Stack. “I don’t think many people in the community, or family for that matter, other than beer historians knew of him or understood his significance. Once I learned about that it became a mission to reestablish his name in the southeastern Wisconsin brewing vernacular.”

Stack’s brewmaster is Brandon Van Epps, an accomplished homebrewer who has been ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Two new breweries to launch in Indianapolis for St. Patrick’s day
Two new Indianapolis-area breweries are planning grand openings during the already-packed holiday weekend of St. Patrick’s Day, The Indy Star reported on March 12.

Whitestown's first brewery Moontown Brewing Company will host a "four-day rager" with March Madness basketball on the TVs, live music, food and brews from March 15 through March 18.

Brewery news USA, MN: Ursa Minor Brewing coming to Duluth’s Lincoln Park neighbourhood
A new craft beer manufacturer, Ursa Minor Brewing, announced it will open in Duluth’s Lincoln Park neighbourhood, BusinessNorth.com reported on March 12.

Ursa Minor will be a five-barrel brewery built to serve its own taproom with a variety of rotating beer styles. Its taproom will also be supplemented by a wood-fired oven that will supply a selection of artisan Napolitano-style pizzas.

The concept was the dream of Ben and Mark Hugus, who are brothers. They chose the name "Ursa Minor" because of the role craft beer has played in their lives. The name is derived from the constellation Ursa Minor, better known as the Little Dipper, which contains the North Star.

“Throughout history, people across the world have used the North Star as a guiding light, or an anchor point, in the night sky to navigate their way across our wondrous and mysterious world. Craft beer is our guiding light and has brought us into the amazing craft beer community,” they said in their announcement.

Ben Hugus is a co-founder and our chief of operations. Mark Hugus is another co-founder and is the head of brewing operations. Andrew Scrignoli is general manager.

The company is located at 2415 W Superior Street, Suite B. ...More info on site

After an exhaustive, eighteen month search, home brewers Vitamin Sea Brewing are making the jump to the commercial level after signing a lease on a space in East Weymouth, MA, Brewbound reported on March 12.

In addition to moving their current 1bbl pilot system to their new home, the plan is to open with a 10bbl system. Consumers will be able to purchase cans and draft pours via their large taproom, and the initial plan is to have a small number of draft accounts on the South Shore and Boston area.

“It’s long overdue,” said founder Dino Funari. “We have plans for a comfortable taproom and outside patio area. We want people to come and hang out, enjoy our beer and rotating food trucks.”

Funari hopes to continue the trend of recent collaborations as they bridge the gap between now and their future opening. “It gives us a chance to keep people excited in anticipation of our opening.”

Brewery news USA, ME: Sasanoa Brewing hopes to be brewing by May
There’s a new brewery coming to Midcoast Maine. Westport Island will be the home port of Sasanoa Brewing, at Tarbox Farm at 62 Tarbox Road, the Wiscasset Newspaper reported on March 11.

Owners of the MOFGA-certified organic farm Kyle DePietro and Angie Trombley have been working long hours to get the brewery up and running.

The farm encompasses about eight acres. It produces practically every vegetable except corn, and produces fruits, flowers and culinary herbs. All are viable possibilities for flavoring and enhancing the beers the couple will be brewing.

“(The brewery) has been on our list of things we wanted to add to the farm for a long time,” Trombley said. “Over the past two years – it takes a while to develop everything and figure out how to do it, and now it’s coming together. It’s been a long process.” They got a Farms for the Future grant, and then started their business plan.

Now the brewing equipment has been purchased, and the couple is working on building the space that will house it. They hope to be brewing by May and selling beer by summer.

DePietro said they’ve been looking at different ways to maximize profits on their farm, and the beer ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: River Outpost Brewing Co. already operational in Peekskill
River Outpost Brewing Co. at 5 John Walsh Blvd. in Peekskill held its grand opening in February, marking the latest attraction to open for business at The Factoria, the 11-acre entertainment complex at Charles Point Marina, the Westfair Online reported on March 11.

“The grand opening went past expectations, from an early hour to a late hour,” said John Sharp, one of the partners behind The Factoria who also owns downtown Peekskill eateries Birdsall House and Gleason’s. “It was great. We really packed them in and people came from all over.”

The brewery offers a menu of bar food and eight beers on tap that are brewed on site, from pale ales to porters.

“Variety is the key. We have people coming for a lot of different reasons, so it’s got to be a good mix of beers,” said Justin Sturges, head brewer at River Outpost.

The brewery is on the ground floor of The Factoria, next to bocce and shuffleboard courts, a 50-game arcade and gateway to the four-story obstacle course.

“We all really believe in craft beer and what it brings to business,” Sharp said. “And for this place, it’s such a huge compound, we thought the brewery would be a great addition.”

Brewery news USA, MO: Wellspent Brewing open in former movie theater in St. Louis
The building where you'll find Wellspent Brewing was home to a movie theater a hundred years ago, KSDK reported on March 12.

Now you'll find a new scene playing out at 2917 Olive Street in St. Louis.

Kyle Kohlmorgen, brewer/owner, said, "We focus on what we call yeast driven beer. Beer that is inspired by our trip to Brussels."

There is still some evidence of the old movie theater at this new brewery. When you walk in, you'll still find the marquees.

"It opened in 1907 that it was called the Bonanza Theatre. We restored the marquees here," he said.

Kyle is yet to find a photo of the Bonanza Theatre.

"It's not really something you can Google. We had some people do some research but they came up empty," he said.

Where the theater's balcony was, is now where the tanks are.

"They actually found pieces of balcony when they bought the building so we don't think it was a whole lot of anything from when the movie theater closed till now," he said.

Right now, there are 3 of Kyle's beers on tap. The bread and butter at this brewery is beer with lower alcohol content. For example, the house Saison is 3.5%.

Brewery news USA: MillerCoors needs exemptions from tariffs on aluminium in order to not rise prices or lose jobs
MillerCoors has released a new statement now that President Trump has signed an order enforcing tariffs on aluminum and steel. The tariffs signed on March 8 would be 10 percent on aluminum and 25 percent on steel. The President expects the tariffs to go into effect in 15 days, The WDJT reported.

Wisconsin Governor Walker said that some Wisconsin companies could get exemptions from the tariffs. MillerCoors says it needs one of those exemptions in order to not rise prices or lose jobs.

In their statement, MillerCoors said, "Without the exclusion, this tariff flies in the face of the administration's commitment to growing our economy as it will mean higher prices for consumers and, likely, the loss of jobs."

Brewery news USA, NY: Humble Harvest Brewing shutting down after less than a year of business
Humble Harvest Brewing, a popular Madison County brewery located at the Four Corners in Nelson, is shutting down after less than a year of business, the Eagle News Online reported on March 12.

In a Facebook post, Humble Harvest owner Jim Corey thanked loyal customers and said family obligations and a full-time day job led to the closing of his nanobrewery.

“Any of you who got the chance to visit Humble Harvest Brewing or know us personally know that I am a family man,” said Corey in the post published on March 9. “Our jobs are what we do to provide for those we love and our passions are who we are. When we work hard and dream a little, we sometimes get to do both.”

This is the second “nano,” or small, brewery in Madison County to close in the past year, with Henneberg Brewing Co., located off Route 13 south of Cazenovia, closing last October.

While their tap room has been closed for the season since December, Corey has already turned in his brewery tap room license as of March 12. The brewery will be selling merchandise online though the rest of the year as Corey prepares to move the brewhouse into ...More info on site

Carlsberg 1883 uses the brewer’s original 134-year old yeast, Saccharomyces Carlsbergensis, which was first isolated and identified by Dr Emil Christian Hansen at the Carlsberg Laboratory in Copenhagen.

The strain is still used in fermentation in brewing all around the world but the new beer was developed through the Carlsberg Rebrew project using pure yeast found in a bottle from 1883.

Celebrating this innovation, the new Danish-style dark lager is full-bodied and rich in malt and caramel, with ABV of 4.6%. Brewed in Denmark, it has a fresh aroma of malt and caramel and a sweet-biscuit body followed by a well-balance aftertaste.

Liam Newton, vice president of marketing for Carlsberg UK, said: “We’re proud of the role Carlsberg has played in the history of brewing. Carlsberg 1883 celebrates the discovery of the purified yeast strain that was shared with brewers worldwide to secure the consistent qualities of beer as we know it today.

“The beer market has changed dramatically in the past few years, let alone since 1883, so it is important that brewers like ourselves ...More info on site

Brewery news Nigeria: Nigeria increases excise duties on tobacco and alcohol
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has approved an increase in excise duties on tobacco and alcoholic beverages, the finance ministry said in a statement on March 11, Reuters reported.

The West African country, which has Africa’s biggest economy, fell into recession in 2016 largely due to low oil prices. It emerged from recession last year, mainly as a result of higher crude prices, and is trying to raise non-oil revenues.

In addition to a 20 percent tax on tobacco, the government will add an extra fixed tax per cigarette. A percentage tax on alcoholic beverages will be replaced by taxes of fixed amounts based on volume.

The finance ministry said the changes will take effect from June 4 this year.

The move would have “a dual benefit of raising the government’s fiscal revenues and reducing the health hazards associated with tobacco-related diseases and alcohol abuse,” it said in its statement.

The ministry said the new regime was in line with a directive from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc on the harmonisation of member-states’ legislation on excise duties.

Raising duties in Nigeria for alcohol could further hit consumer demand amid fragile growth.

Brewery news India & UK: Indian craft brewer White Rhino set to take its beer to the UK
About 18 months after Ishaan Puri founded White Rhino Brewing Co., the New Delhi-based company is set to take its craft beer White Rhino to the UK—one of world’s most mature beer markets, Livemint reported on March 13.

“UK is a mature market for good quality craft beers. We have undergone a massive market study, testing before deciding to enter the UK market. We will have limited presence across selected pubs in London, Manchester and Leeds,” said Puri, founder and director, White Rhino Brewing Co.

Although promotion and advertising of alcoholic beverages is permitted in the UK, Puri said he would primarily bank on word-of-mouth—a strategy that worked in favour for the brand in India—to crack the UK market. The UK market offers around 11,000 beer choices including one-off specials and seasonal beers, and houses more than 53,000 pubs of which more than 37,000 sells ale variant of beer.

The company will initially export Lager and India Pale Ale to the UK. For distribution, White Rhino has partnered with West Yorkshire-based James Clay, an independent importer and distributor of specialist beers that has been in the business for more than 30 years and has a strong network of restaurants, pubs and bars in ...More info on site
