THE HOP FLAVONOID POTENTIAL FOR DRY HOPPED BEERS
ABSTRACT
In recent years, several positive physiological and
pharmacological properties have been reported for
the xanthohumol and other prenylflavonoids from
hops, such as xanthohumol, isoxanthohumol, 6- and
8-prenynaringenin. This German research team has
developed an HPLC-MS/MS method for identifying and
quantifying nine hop flavonoids. They found that the
concentration of these compounds in beer is variety
dependent. Some of the flavenoids have very low flavour
thresholds and in combination it is possible that they
contribute to the bitter taste in dry hopped beer.

USA, NB: Cosmic Eye Brewing planning to launch in Lincoln soon
|
Sam Riggins started brewing beer at home about a dozen years ago, before starting work as a professional brewer for Nebraska Brewing Company in Papillion in 2010.
That job lasted about four years, before family responsibilities intervened and he could no longer justify the commute from Lincoln.
So he went back to home brewing.
But Riggins, who grew up in Fairbury, said opening his own commercial brewery was "always part of the plan."
That plan is now coming to fruition, as Riggins is partnering with his wife and his parents to open Cosmic Eye Brewing in a space formerly occupied by a laser tag center in the Shopper's Fair mall near 70th and O streets, the Lincoln Journal Star reported on March 17.
Riggins said the name has nothing to do with the former resident of his space. He actually planned to go with a different brewery name but ran into trademark issues.
With a deadline approaching to come up with a logo for some promotional artwork, Riggins said he pulled the name Cosmic Eye out of thin air after hearing the term used in the lyrics of a song.
He will keep some of the laser tag decor, including benches and black lights, but Riggins said

Canada, MB: Oxus Brewing’s beers about to hit the market in Winnipeg
|
Just over a year after it received a preview profile at OnBeer.org, a new brewery in Winnipeg has announced that its beers are about to hit the market, Canadian Beer News reported on March 15.
Oxus Brewing has been established by Sean Shoyoqubov, an immigrant from Tajikistan who has been homebrewing since soon after he arrived in Winnipeg seven years ago.
The first two beers from Oxus are Juice of the Oats Oatmeal Stout (5.5% abv, 28 IBU) and Transoxania India Pale Ale (5.9% abv, 54 IBU), both of which shipped from the brewery earlier this week and will be available soon in 650 ml bottles at Liquor Mart locations. A third core brand, Canadian Dream Blonde Ale (4.6% abv, 20 IBU), is set to follow soon.
Oxus beers will be available exclusively via Liquor Marts and other select beer vendors for now, but Shoyoqubov has longer term plans to build a taproom and retail store at the brewery.

Canada, ON: Black Lab Brewing set to open in Toronto later this year
|
A new brewery affiliated with one of Canada’s largest beer running clubs is set to open in Toronto later this year, Canadian Beer News reported on March 14.
Black Lab Brewing is being established by Dan Grant, co-founder of RunTOBeer, and long-time club member Billy Madden.
As Grant explains to Ontario Beverage Network, the brewpub – which is named after his affinity for black lab dogs, as well as the black facade of the building – will serve as RunTOBeer’s de facto clubhouse, and as such will be “a place where runners feel like it’s their place as well. We’re looking at things like adding lockers, where runners can store personal items while they’re out on the nearby trails.”
Grant also notes that Black Lab has hired an award-winning brewer to oversee production, with four beers expected to be on tap at opening, and more to follow soon after.
Black Lab Brewing will be located at 818 Eastern Avenue – a short distance from both Rorschach Brewing and Radical Road Brewing – and is expected to open in the late summer.

Canada, ON: Beard Free Brewing sets soft opening on March 23

kawarthaNOW.com reported on March 15 that a new brewery and taproom will be opening its doors next weekend in Peterborough.
Beard Free Brewing has been founded by Nick Dubé, John Rozema, and Steveon Zablosky, and has had beer on tap at several local bars and restaurants since early March. The soft opening of its taproom and retail store will start on Friday, March 23rd.
The brewery will be offering four year-round brands named after local landmarks, including Simcoe St. IPA (6.5% abv, 70 IBU), Harstone Irish Red Ale (6% abv, 25 IBU), Lock 21 Cream Ale (4.5% abv, 15 IBU), and Little Lake French Saison (5% abv, 10 IBU). In addition, rotating seasonals and limited edition beers will also be available, with the first two being Bench Warmer Amber (5.5% abv, 20 IBU), and Hop Series #1: Simcoe X Equinox West Coast IPA (6.7% abv, 80 IBU).

USA, NC: Guidon Brewing Company coming to Hendersonville later this year
|
The Seventh Avenue district has become a rallying point for craft beer in Hendersonville, with a third brewery on the way, the BlueRidgeNow.com reported on March 17.
Guidon Brewing Company is set to open at 415 Eighth Ave. next to Southern Appalachian Brewery later this year. Hendersonville couple Mike and Connie Baer are creating a veteran, American, German and family owned brewery dedicated to the art of brewing high-quality, carefully crafted beer.
Mike Baer, a U.S. Army veteran, was stationed at Fort Stewart, Ga. when he began preparing for the private sector. A homebrewer since 2003, Baer’s friend put a bug in his ear that he should open his own brewery.
After leaving the Army, Baer starting looking into professional brewing schools to get some credentials. He saw the Asheville region has several and the couple liked the area, so they decided to move. Mike attended the professional brewing science program at South College Asheville.
The Baers wanted to be a part of the town they live in, so they decided to open a brewery in Hendersonville. It took a while to find a spot, Baer said, but they eventually found the location on Eighth Avenue.

Canada, NB: Valonray Farmhouse Brewery opening soon in MacDougall Settlement
|
A new brewery focused on wild and sour ales will be opening soon in MacDougall Settlement, a small New Brunswick community located a half-hour north of Moncton, Canadian Beer News reported on March 19.
Valonray Farmhouse Brewery has been founded by Philippe Fontaine, an engineer and former Canadian Armed Forces member, who has built the brewery from scratch on a farm that has been owned by his family for seven generations.
In an interview with Atlantic Canada Beer Blog, Fontaine explains that he drew influence from American breweries such as Jolly Pumpkin, The Bruery, and New Belgium, and will be producing beers that are exclusively open-fermented and bottle-refermented.
The initial Valonray line-up will feature five beers – a Tripel, a Single, a Blonde ale, Pale ale, and a Saison – all fermented using various strains of Saccharomyces. Fontaine describes them to ACBB as follows:
“The Tripel and Single have a similar recipe, but the results are quite different because of higher amount of simple sugars in the Tripel. The Blonde is actually closer to a Belgian Golden Strong, but with lower alcohol. The Pale ale was designed to be slightly more malt-forward to highlight our use of craft malts. The Saison is definitely our

USA, VA: Brick & Mortar Brewing Co. already open in Suffolk, Virginia
|
Brick & Mortar Brewing Co. opened Saturday, March 16 at 212 E. Washington St. in downtown Suffolk after renovations of a circa 1900 building, the Daily Press reported.
Owner David Stacknick, along with his co-owners and investment partners, envision the brewery as a neighborhood hangout and a destination for out-of-town visitors, according to a news release. Stacknick is a Suffolk volunteer firefighter.
The repurposed 4,670-square-foot building was once the home of Milton Elliott’s Elliott Motor Co., according to a city news release. The brewery’s exposed brick walls, high trellis and ceiling and wooden hand-crafted tables and chairs creates an open environment with an industrial-weathered vibe.
Patrons are able to sample the beers via flights or can order pints or growlers to go. Selections will rotate but Brick & Mortar plans to consistently offer a dozen beers on tap consisting of a mix of their own house brews and other local favorites. Modest Molly, a white India pale ale (IPA), and Peanut City Porter, an homage to Suffolk’s moniker, have been making their rounds at local events.
Hours of operation are: 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, noon to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Canada, ON: Wave Maker Craft Brewery & Distillery getting ready to open in Cambridge later this year
|
A brewmaster with experience at numerous breweries in Ontario has announced plans to open a brewery and distillery in Cambridge later this year, Canadian Beer News reported on March 14.
Wave Maker Craft Brewery & Distillery is being founded by Scott Pautler, a graduate of Niagara College Teaching Brewery who has most recently worked as head brewer at Old Flame Brewing in Port Perry.
Set to be located at 639 Laurel Street in the Preston neighbourhood, Wave Maker will feature a 1,300-square-foot taproom and retail shop with eight taps, a cocktail menu, and event space.

USA, IN: Tow Yard Brewing Co. announces temporary closure
|
Tow Yard Brewing Co. said on March 16 that it would temporarily close as it plans to "reinvent", the Indianapolis Star reported.
The 4-year-old brewery made the announcement in a Facebook post and on its website, and said they would have an update soon.
The move comes after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy Jan. 17 to avoid eviction that same week from its location at 501 Madison Ave.
Mike Einterz, the attorney who represents Tow Yard's landlord, said the brewery was paying a below-market rate during the term of its lease, which ended at the end of February, to help the owners get back on their feet.
Negotiations for a new lease at a market rate "considerably higher" than what Tow Yard was paying, though, stalled, Einterz said.
"There are a lot of moving parts because you have a bankruptcy in place," Einterz said.
Since then, an agreement was reached in bankruptcy court between Tow Yard and the landlord for an eviction on March 15 and an auction of Tow Yard's assets, Einterz said.
The auction is expected to take place in early April, but the landlord is also looking into possibly turning over the property to another business, Einterz said. The landlord has received

Vietnam: Vietnamese consumers spending heavily on beer and snacks
|
Vietnamese consumers have great demand for snacks and beer, according to a newly-released report by the global marketing research firm Nielsen.
The “What’s Next in Emerging Markets” report provides compelling evidence that Brazil, Vietnam, Argentina, Ghana, and Ivory Coast consumers are increasingly willing to spend on snack and beer products. The document combines Nielsen data on snacks and beer with macro-economic indicators and forecasts to identify these growth markets.
“Beer and snacks aren’t just fun. They are lead indicators of continued buying preference outside of essentials. Beyond that, the countries highlighted have macro-economic conditions that suggest a favorable environment for growth,” said Regan Leggett, executive director of thought leadership and foresight at Nielsen.
Nielsen says Vietnam is currently experiencing one of its fastest economic expansions in years. It also boasts one of the fastest-growing fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industries in Asia at 5.9% in the year to date.
Even more promising, only a few categories are decelerating. Snack is leading the pack in growth, followed by beer and healthy food drinks. Energy drinks and feminine care follow closely behind.
Opportunities abound in emerging markets to capitalize on global beer trends, such as premium, craft, ciders and flavored brews, because historically beer category sales in emerging

Vietnam: Sabeco rebuffs state audit’s allegations of management and investing activities violations
|
Saigon Beer, Alcohol and Beverage Corporation (Sabeco) refuted the state audit’s allegations about its violations in the management of its operations and investing activities before it sold a stake for the foreign partner, while simultaneously affirming that its operation complies with regulations, according to newswire Vnexpress.
Recently, the State Audit Office proposed collecting VND2.5 trillion ($109.8 million) in tax arrears from Sabeco. The lion’s share of this is undeclared profit of VND2.8 trillion ($123.01 million) from 2016.
Besides, the state audit asked Sabeco to explain its losses from investing in banking, stocks, as well as pouring money into financial investment funds.
Sabeco has issued a document explaining the state audit’s allegations, especially the more than VND2.8 trillion ($122.99 million) in profit after which it had not declared tax.
Sabeco expects to earn VND39.3 trillion ($1.73 billion) in revenue in 2018, with net profit of VND4.9 trillion ($217 million), signifying increase of 11 and 2 per cent in revenue and net profit, respectively.
Accordingly, Sabeco explained that the undeclared profit was one of the problems that Sabeco could not solve before conducting the equitisation.
Besides, it affirmed that it published information relating to the state audit’s assessment before it sold the stake for the foreign partner.

Hungary: Heineken to invest HUF2 bln in its Sopron brewery
|
Heineken Hungária will invest HUF2 billion from its own funds in its plant in Sopron (northwest Hungary) to optimize and increase production by 30%, the company was reported as saying on March 20 by state news agency MTI.
Zoltán Thuróczy, the head of the Sopron brewery, said the company will demolish old buildings, construct storage facilities, build roads and drains, and double the size of its filtering plant by yearʼs end. The investment will raise the headcount at the plant by 40 from the current 250.
The project will not affect the company’s market share as it will only compensate for the imminent loss of production at its Martfű brewery, which Heineken is turning into a distribution and logistics base, MTI noted.
Heineken Hungária CEO José Matthijsse said machinery will be moved from Martfű to Sopron, where the plant already makes nearly 50 types of product.
Heinekenʼs Hungarian operations posted HUF52 bln in revenues in 2016 and a HUF400 mln loss, according to public records.

Ireland: Guinness tops list of Ireland’s most valuable brands, again
|
Guinness has again topped the list of Ireland’s most valuable brands, coming ahead of AIB and Penneys owner Primark in the latest rankings by London-based consultancy Brand Finance, the Irish Times reported on March 16.
With up to 7.5 million pints of Guinness expected to be downed on St Patrick’s Day alone, the Diageo-owned brand was estimated to be worth €2.1 billion in 2017, up 5 per cent on the previous year.
Brand Finance said the value of the Guinness brand had been bolstered by steady global sales and new product innovations such as Pure Brew, the company’s new non-alcoholic lager, which represented a “clear strategic vision” on the part of its owner.
AIB was afforded the accolade of fastest-growing Irish brand, seeing its value jump 40 per cent to €1.9 billion on foot of an oversubscribed IPO in June and improved financial results. This moved the bank from fourth place to second place in the rankings.
In contrast, rival Bank of Ireland fell from fourth to seventh place with its brand value dropping 30 per cent to €900 million on foot of the ongoing tracker mortgage scandal and weak revenue forecasts.
“The brand had a tough year and is now going through a period

China & North Korea: Banned for export North Korean beer bottled and sold in China - sources
|
A popular North Korean beer banned under international sanctions for export outside the country is now being bottled in China and sold to restaurants as a smuggled product, Radio Free Asia reported citing sources living near the border.
The Daedong River Beer now being bought in China is not a genuine North Korean product, but is a fake, a source living in the Chinese port city of Dandong, across the Yalu River from North Korea, told RFA’s Korean Service.
“Its bottle shape and label and even its taste are similar to genuine Daedong River Beer, but beer experts can distinguish the difference in taste,” RFA’s source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“But as its taste is very close to that of the genuine product, ordinary people can’t tell the difference,” the source said, adding that some believe the fake product is being brewed with special hops smuggled in from North Korea.
