THE HOP FLAVONOID POTENTIAL FOR DRY HOPPED BEERS
ABSTRACT
In recent years, several positive physiological and
pharmacological properties have been reported for
the xanthohumol and other prenylflavonoids from
hops, such as xanthohumol, isoxanthohumol, 6- and
8-prenynaringenin. This German research team has
developed an HPLC-MS/MS method for identifying and
quantifying nine hop flavonoids. They found that the
concentration of these compounds in beer is variety
dependent. Some of the flavenoids have very low flavour
thresholds and in combination it is possible that they
contribute to the bitter taste in dry hopped beer.

Mexico: Constellation Brands to expand production capacity of its Sonora brewery
|
Constellation Brands has announced that it will invest $900 million to expand the production capacity of its production facility in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, Mexico, FoodBev.com reported on March 22.
According to the brand, the investment will expand the production capacity of the facility by approximately 5 million hectolitres over the next four years and create up to 450 new jobs.
Constellation acquired the facility from Modelo for $600 million in 2016, as it aimed to strengthen its position in the North American beer market.
Daniel Baima, president of Constellation Brands in Mexico, stated: “Mexico and Ciudad Obregón are of fundamental importance to Constellation Brands; the high calibre of talent in the community and their utmost commitment to making quality products are a few of the reasons why we selected Ciudad Obregón in the first place and continue investing here.”
“Since the acquisition of the brewery in December 2016, we have had the opportunity to work closely with many sectors of the community, including farmers, ejidatarios, union representatives, social groups, media, industry and commerce groups, schools and universities, environmental groups and Government officials, who have welcomed us with enormous warmth and have embraced our facility and staff.”

World: AB InBev sets climate, water goals to support beer sales
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s biggest brewer, said on March 21 it would cut its greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter by 2025 and help thousands of farmers cope with disruptions to water supplies stoked by global warming.
The Belgium-based brewer also said it would make all its packaging either returnable or from mainly recycled materials by 2025 and was on track to achieve a goal set in 2017 to get all the electricity it buys from renewable sources by 2025.
“It’s a win-win … It’s good for business and good for the environment”, chief executive Carlos Brito told Reuters of the new sustainability goals. He declined to estimate the total cost of the measures or the impact on earnings.
Brito said AB InBev, whose beers include Budweiser, Corona and Stella Artois, was vulnerable to environmental changes since it relied on barley, malt, hops, wheat, rice and other products grown by 50,000 farmers in dozens of nations.
“If the environment has a problem, we have a problem,” he said in a telephone interview from New York of disruptions such as heatwaves, droughts, floods and storms linked to climate change.
“If we were a supplier of smartphones we would make them in one location and ship around

South Korea: Hite Jinro toasts rise in export shipments
|
Hite Jinro Co., a major South Korean liquor maker, said on March 21 outbound shipments of its products nearly tripled over the past 20 years, as it moves to expand its presence in the global market, the Yonhap News reported on March 21.
Exports of the company's alcoholic beverages came to 94 billion won (US$87.8 million) last year, up 177 percent from 33.9 billion won tallied in 1997, it said.
By country, Japan was the largest importer of Hite Jinro's products, accounting for 56.6 percent of the total outbound shipments last year.
Yet, the tally is down from 80.6 percent in 2012, as the liquor maker has been putting efforts to diversify its export markets.
Southeast Asian countries, which imported 3.6 percent of Hite Jinro's total exports in 2013, comprised 17.6 percent of the total in 2017, the company said.
Hite Jinro currently exports beer and soju to 88 countries, it said.
"With Southeast Asia as an outpost, we will continue our efforts to raise awareness of soju to other foreign markets," company executive Hwang Jeong-ho said during a ceremony in Hanoi to mark the 50th anniversary of the launch of its outbound shipments to Vietnam, its first soju export destination.

India: AB InBev to launch Beck, relaunch other brands in attempt to ramp up investments in India
|
Anheuser-Busch In-Bev plans to introduce global lager brand Beck’s in India and relaunch others in an attempt to ramp up investment in the country, which it expects could become the largest beer-consuming market in the world, the Economic Times reported on March 22.
The company’s shipments in India increased at a double-digit rate, putting it among the fastest-growing territories for the world’s biggest brewer. Premium brands Budweiser, Hoegaarden and Corona are driving this growth, Ben Verhaert, the company’s India president, said in his first interview after joining the country’s second largest brewer last year.
“India has the second-largest consumer base and is one of the top priorities for the parent company. It is a country where we want to invest more. We have the most diverse portfolio and are extremely strong towards premium — the leader in this segment,” said Verhaert.
The new brand, Beck’s Ice, will be first launched in Maharashtra and then rolled out nationwide. While AB InBev has been importing brands, this will be the first brewed-in-India brand launch in more than a decade.
AB InBev, which produces one in four beers around the world, was a fringe player until two years ago in the Indian market,

India: Telangana set to raise beer prices by at least 15%
|
This summer, consumers will have to shell out more for chilled beer as the Telangana State Government is set to hike the prices by at least 15 per cent in a week or ten days, The Hans India reported on March 21.
A committee comprising officials of state Excise department submitted a proposal recommending increasing prices of beer to Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao. In view of the increase of beer consumption in summer every year, officials said that hiking prices in the peak season will help the government earn more revenue in the beginning of the 2018-19 financial year. This is a classic case of making hay while sun shines.
As per the excise policy, the government would have to revise the liquor prices every two years. The proposal for the increase of liquor prices has been hanging fire since the bifurcation of the State in 2014. The TS government revised liquor prices in December last.
The increase in beer prices would push up revenue by 2 per cent to 3 per cent every month. At present, liquor sales are contributing nearly Rs 900 crore to the state's exchequer every month.
In summer last year, beer sales had hit an all-time record. A

Canada: Domestic barley use to remain unchanged but exports to rise by 16% this season
|
For 2017-18, Canada’s total domestic use of barley is forecast to remain unchanged at 5.873 mln tonnes but exports are expected to rise by 16% to 2.7 mln tonnes due to stronger import demand related to lower world barley supplies, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada said in its March report.
Carry-out stocks are forecast to fall by 27% to 1.6 million tonnes and remain near the previous three and five-year averages. The Lethbridge In-store feed barley price is forecast to increase due to tight domestic supply and decline in the supply of other domestic feed grain substitutes.
The Lethbridge barley price, October to mid-February had traded in the C$210-220/t range. However, in March the market jumped close to C$20/t to a crop year high. The seasonal upturn is related to late winter snows and continuing strong barley exports, mainly to China. In addition, the US$0.30/bushel (bu) increase in the old-crop US corn futures price has provided strong support for North American and world coarse grain prices.
Due to strong supply in North America, the price of domestic malt barley price has not increased to the same extent as feed barley. The premium for malting barley relative to feed barley has narrowed. It is

At the same time, wheat stocks were up 3.4% year-on-year at 6.25 mln tonnes against 6.05 mln tonnes recorded as of March 1, 2017. Barley stocks were down 25.5% at some 1.18 mln tonnes (1.59 mln tonnes in March 2017).

USA: US hop stocks up 21% from last year
|
U.S. hop stocks totaled 169 million pounds on March 1, up 21 percent from a year earlier and marking the third March in a row that it has increased, the Capital Press reported on March 22.
“This was certainly expected. We are hearing that prices for certain varieties, particularly the larger-acreage public varieties of Cascade and Centennial, saw substantially lower prices on the spot market last fall,” said Ann George, executive director of Hop Growers of America and the Washington Hop Commission in Moxee, near Yakima.
Much of the crop is contracted a pre-defined prices so lower prices generally only impact spot markets such as over-contract or rejected production volumes or acreage for which a multi-year contract has expired, George said.
A lot of that acreage will be replanted in varieties that are not currently over supplied and some acreage may go idle for a year or two on the hope of a more even supply-demand balance, she said.
Acreage expansion is unlikely this year, she said.
The 169 million-pound inventory amounts to 132 million pounds held by dealers and growers and 37 million pounds held by brewers, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistic Service. The March 1 report was released March 15.
