Brewery news USA: Sales of beer at multi-outlet and convenience stores up 1.5 percent through March 25
Market research firm IRI Worldwide, which tracks category-wide sales trends at off-premise retailers in the US, reported on April 5 that dollar sales of beer at multi-outlet and convenience stores were up 1.5 percent through March 25.

Much of that growth is being driven by imported beer, and specifically Mexican imports, dollar sales of which were up 11.5 percent during the period.

Dollar sales of craft beer, meanwhile, were up 5.3 percent, according to the firm.

Among the five largest beer companies – Anheuser-Busch InBev, MillerCoors, Constellation Brands, Heineken USA and Boston Beer – only Constellation and Boston Beer posted positive dollar sales growth, up 14.5 percent and 14.2 percent, respectively.

Boston Beer is growing to start the year, in spite of sales of its flagship Samuel Adams flagship declining 14 percent. Sales of the company’s seasonal SKU were up 69.5 percent while sales of Twisted Tea grew 22.8 percent.

AB InBev, MillerCoors, and Heineken were down 1.2 percent, 1.6 percent, and 4.2 percent, respectively.

Among craft brewing companies, Yuengling and Sierra Nevada both grew dollar sales 5.8 percent and 3 percent, respectively.

Dollar sales for New Belgium Brewing, however, were down 4.7 percent as its flagship Fat Tire Amber Ale declined 16.8 percent.

And sales of Lagunitas ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Brewers Association publishes list of 50 fastest growing craft breweries
The Brewers Association (BA) — the not-for-profit trade group representing small and independent craft brewers in the US — released on April 10 its inaugural list of the 50 fastest growing small and independent1 craft brewing companies of 2017.

Median growth from 2016 to 2017 for these breweries was 216 percent; the median size of breweries on the list went from 284 barrels in 2016 to 963 barrels in 2017. These companies represent 5.5 percent of craft’s growth by volume for 2017 and include eight brewpubs, 40 microbreweries and two regional craft breweries, the Association said.

The top five breweries on the list are:

1. CraftRoots Brewing Co (Milford, MA) 2. GoatHouse Brewing Co (Lincoln, CA) 3. Crowded Castle Brewing Co (Phoenixville, PA) 4. Idyll Hounds Brewing Co (Santa Rosa Beach, FL) 5. Royal Docks Brewing Co (Canton, OH)

“With 5 percent growth overall for small and independent brewers in 2017 and microbreweries and brewpubs delivering the majority of that, we wanted to spotlight some of the breweries driving that growth,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “As the growth base for craft becomes more diffuse, these fast growing brewing companies illustrate that a diverse set of success stories still exist.”

Breweries had to have opened 12/31/2015 or earlier to be considered. ...More info on site

Barley news Canada: Feed barley prices bring more joy to farmers than those of malting barley
Canadian farmers with barley in the bin have a bit of a love-hate relationship with barley prices right now, the Alberta Express reported on April 10.

They love that feed prices are so high, but hate that malt prices are so low.

“These prices are definitely something — to have feed prices where they’re at right now, it’s definitely out of the norm,” said Rimbey-area farmer Jason Lenz.

“I think everybody is enjoying these feed prices, but we’re just hoping that there are some good pricing opportunities for this year’s malt crop coming up.”

Demand for both feed and malt are up, here and abroad — partly because of sharply lower Australian production last year. That’s shown by Canadian exports, which had topped two million tonnes as of the start of March, nearly a one-third jump from a year earlier.

But while feed supplies are stretched, there was plenty of high-quality malt grown on the Prairies last year.

As a result, old-crop feed barley prices have shot up to C$5 per bushel in some parts of the province, while old-crop malt has fetched as little as C$4.25 a bushel.

Production contracts for the upcoming growing season are a little higher, at about C$5 per bushel, but that’s ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Ontario Minister of Finance announces changes to Small Beer Manufacturers’ Tax Credit
At a press conference held on April 9 at Amsterdam BrewHouse in Toronto, Ontario’s Minister of Finance Charles Sousa highlighted changes to the Small Beer Manufacturers’ Tax Credit that were included in the recently released 2018 Ontario Budget, the Canadian Beer News reported.

According to an accompanying press release, proposed changes to the Credit include “increasing the amount of support for brewers with taxable sales between 75,000 and 200,000 hectolitres, and increasing the worldwide production eligibility for the credit from 150,000 to 300,000 hectolitres.”

This follows the announcement on April 6 by the Ministry of Economic Development and Growth that a grant of C$1,330,860 from Ontario’s Jobs and Prosperity Fund has been awarded to Steam Whistle Brewery. The same day also saw an announcement of an investment of C$400,000 from the Southwestern Ontario Development Fund into Silversmith Brewing.

In addition, Muskoka Brewery has announced that the changes to the Tax Credit along with a government grant will help to find a C$5 million growth and expansion project this year, the largest in the brewery’s history.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Dunvegan Brewing already open in Rycroft
The small village of Rycroft, located 70 km north of Grand Prairie in Northern Alberta, is now home to the province’s newest brewery, Canadian Beer News reported on April 5.

Dunvegan Brewing has been founded by Dale Steinke, and was granted Alberta’s 100th liquor producer’s license late last year.

The brewery officially launched in mid-March with the release of six brands – Peace Country Pale Ale, Over the Bridge APA, Dunvegan Brown Ale, Alberta Amber Ale, The 100 Session Ale, and ADD IPA. All are available in 6-packs of 355 ml cans at select liquor stores in Alberta.

Brewery news USA, CO: Holidaily Brewing to break ground on new production facility in the coming weeks
In the coming weeks, Holidaily Brewing, one of the few certified gluten-free breweries in the U.S., will break ground on a new production facility that will dramatically expand its production capacity. The new brewhouse is being built across the street from the current Holidaily taproom located at 801 Brickyard Circle in Golden, Brewbound reported on April 6.

Ultimately, 20,000 barrels a year will be brewed in the new 10,000 square foot facility, which is scheduled to be operational by the end of 2018 and fully built out by 2021. All of the beer produced by Holidaily is, and will continue to be, certified gluten free by the Gluten-Free Certification Organization.

“Through our first two years of existence, we’ve seen great growth and acceptance of the Holidaily brand,” founder Karen Hertz said. “The demand for gluten-free products is strong and we’re excited by the opportunity to distribute our beer to all of Colorado, and potentially beyond.”

Holidaily’s beer production nearly tripled from 2016 to 2017, and the company plans further growth in 2018. Much of the consumption of gluten-free products is driven by the 3 million Americans who suffer from Celiac disease, a condition in which gluten—a protein found in common beer ingredients barley, ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Kinkardine’s Grey Matter Brewing to open its doors on April 26
A brewery that has been in the works for almost two years has announced that it will be opening later this month in Kincardine, a small community on the shore of Lake Huron in Ontario, Canadian Beer News reported on April 5.

Grey Matter Brewing has been founded by Michael Hueftlein, a brewmaster with past experience at several breweries including Neustadt Springs. His plans to open Grey Matter were reported by the Kincardine News in the summer of 2016, and work on the brewery has been progressing since then.

As noted in a Facebook post published on April 4, Grey Matter will be launching on Thursday April 26th. Previous posts noted two beers – Checkmate Helles Lager and Mission to Mars American Pale Ale – that are planned to be available on opening day.

Grey Matter Brewing is located at 726 Queen Street in downtown Kincardine.

Brewery news USA, MA: Granite Coast Brewing Co. to become Peabody’s first craft brewery
Lifelong friends Jeff Marquis and Rob Dunn, owners of Granite Coast Brewing Co., started brewing craft beer as a hobby. Now, they're looking to share their best recipes with the North Shore, The Salem News reported on April 8.

The Peabody City Council granted the necessary special permit on April 5 for what will be the city's first craft brewery.

Their leased space at 77B Main St., in downtown Peabody, is currently under construction, but the two are hoping to open by late August. A patio will be open seasonally. The brewery will be neighbors with the Nex Mex Thing, a Mexican restaurant, which will move up the street.

Marquis and Dunn will start serving the 20 brews they have been perfecting for the past five years and cycle in new brews over time with a rotating tap list. Their style ranges from light pilsners and wits (Belgian white style) to easy-drinking stouts and alcohol contents that could "put you to bed."

"The goal is to have something for everyone," Marquis said, "and also to have new things every time you come in."

There won't be a full kitchen in the facility, so it will be BYOF — Bring Your Own Food. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NY: River Outpost Brewing officially open in Peekskill
River Outpost Brewing, in Peekskill's Factoria complex, is officially open, The Journal News reported on April 10.

Though the new brewery has been slinging suds since February, the official opening was held on April 7, led by head brewer (and Captain Lawrence alum) Justin Sturges.

Officials from Westchester County, City of Peekskill, and Town of Cortlandt were on hand, as were the principal owners: longtime restaurateurs John Sharp of Birdsall House and Gleason’s, Louis Lanza of Hudson Hospitality Group (Taco Dive Bar, The Hudson Room, Eagle Saloon and Buns-N-Bourbon) and Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. founder Scott Vaccaro.

Beer aficionados will find eight original brews crafted on site, ranging from IPAs to pilsners and stouts. Among the offerings: Sharkee, a dry-hopped floral, dry pilsner; Skillbilly, a cloudy, straw-colored IPA; Cool Hand, a light, crisp lager and Nurse Batchie, a full-bodied brown porter.

There's also a bar menu featuring chicken wings, hummus, calamari, a River Outpost burger (with secret sauce), pizza and more.

Brewery news USA, FL: Hammerstein Brewing Co. in process of finalizing new brewery
Two brothers have fused their surname with an iconic drinking vessel to dub one of the latest additions to Tampa Bay’s brewing community, cltampa.com reported on April 9.

The beer stein and founders Travis and Rob Hammer are where the coming-soon Hammerstein Brewing Co. gets its name from. The Hammers are in the process of finalizing the location of their new brewery, but regionites can rest easy knowing that it is planned for a site somewhere locally.

“We’re a few months out from opening doors, but keep checking back for updates on when we have a location and our soft grand opening!” reads an update posted to the Hammerstein Brewing Facebook page on April 6.

Alongside a variety of taproom games to keep patrons entertained, Hammerstein Brewing promises “modernized styles of traditional German recipes” from brewer John Kirk, according to its website. Co-founder Rob will serve as chef of the brewery’s on-site food truck as well.

One beer that’s been announced? A blackberry saison called Whoa, Black Betty! Bramble Jam. The brew is made with noble hops Hallertauer Mittelfrüh and Saaz, plus some fresh blackberries.

Brewery news USA, MI: Third Nature Brewing Co. planning 6,400-square-foot brewery in Rockford area
Three Michigan natives plan to open a new microbrewery in the Rockford area, MiBiz reported on April 8.

A company currently doing business as Third Nature Brewing Co. plans to build a 6,400-square-foot brewery and 120-seat restaurant at 7733 Childsdale Ave. NE, located southwest of Rockford near the Rogue River, according to documents filed with Plainfield Charter Township.

According to partner Chad Zitzelsberger, early “work-in-progress” plans for the taproom concept focus on the brewery’s natural setting and play up the local outdoor lifestyle. The site is located close to the White Pine Trail and across the street from access to the Rogue River.

“We plan to have a beautiful beer garden out in the woods, a place where you can drink a beer outside, spend an afternoon and play games,” he said, noting all three partners are into running and cycling.

Zitzelsberger is partnering on the project with his brother, Troy Zitzelsberger, and brother-in-law Bryce Roebke.

Of the partners, Troy Zitzelsberger has prior brewery experience, having founded Hop Mori Brewing Co. in Seoul, South Korea in 2015, where he also serves as the company’s master brewer, according to documents filed with the township.

Representatives from Third Nature went before the township Planning Commission last week for ...More info on site

Released ahead of summer, the launch coincides with updated packaging for Bud Light lime.

AB InBev said that citrus flavours now account for 84% of the overall flavoured beer category in the US. Both variants incorporate real citrus peels into the brewing process.

Ontario Beverage Network reports that Ottawa’s Dog & Pony Brewlab has officially shut down after several months of inactivity.

According to a statement posted on Facebook last week, the partners “felt the market was reaching saturation and it likely wasn’t a good time to enter,” and that they have “parted ways to work on their own respective projects.”
