Australia: Wine most popular, but beer most drunk by Australians - report
|
The Roy Morgan Alcohol Currency Report has found that 69.3 per cent of Australians aged 18 and over drink alcohol in an average four-week period, the Food Magazine reported on April 12.
According to the report, of all Australians 18+ years old, 44.5 per cent consume wine, 39.1 per cent consume beer, 27.5 per cent consume spirits, and 13.6 per cent consume cider.
When looking at drinkers by gender, men are the predominant consumers of alcohol, with 74 per cent consuming alcohol in an average four-week period, compared to 65 per cent of women.
Women had the highest incidence of wine consumption, with nearly 50 per cent of all women drinking wine in an average 4 weeks compared to 39 per cent of men. Wine skews to older drinkers, with the highest incidence among 50+ and 35-49 year olds.
In contrast, beer is consumed by 59 per cent of men in an average 4 weeks, compared to only 20 per cent of women. Beer is fairly constant across age, increasing slightly from 18-49, but declines for the 50+ age group.
Cider is fairly evenly split between the genders with a slight skew towards women, but it is heavily skewed to younger Australians compared to old,

Vietnam: Ministry of Finance asks Sabeco to pay US$111 mln worth of undistributed profit to State Budget
|
The Ministry of Finance has asked the Saigon Beer-Alcohol-Beverage Joint Stock Corporation (Sabeco) to pay about VND2.5 trillion (US$111 million) worth of undistributed profit to the State Budget, VietNamNet Bridge reported on April 11.
The inquiry follows a recent report of the State Audit of Viet Nam, which in March proposed Sabeco pay the same amount of money to the State Budget.
According to the audit report sent to the Government, that amount of money was part of Sabeco’s VND2.7 trillion in undistributed profit and considered the dividend that the Government should have received from Sabeco for its 89.6 per cent stake in the company recorded as of December 31, 2016.
Sabeco should have paid the dividend to the State as the Government was holding nearly 89.6 per cent of the brewer prior to 2016, not 36 per cent – the State’s remaining stake in Sabeco after selling 53.6 per cent in December 2017 – as reported in the firm’s financial statements, the audit agency said in its report.
This action did not comply with Decree 99/2012 issued by the Government in November 2012 regulating obligations and duties that State-owned enterprises should uphold to ensure efficient use of the State capital in their businesses,

Canada: Barley area shrinking but steady and growing demand brings in new opportunities
|
The current state of Canada’s barley industry is grim, The Alberta Farm Express reported on April 10.
“Barley’s piece of the pie is shrinking,” said Shannon Sereda, manager of market development and policy for Alberta Barley.
“It’s no longer in a dominant position like it once was in Western Canada.”
Barley acres across the Prairies have been in a long-term decline, Sereda said at the Western Barley Growers Association annual meeting last month — falling from 6.4 million acres in 2012 to just 4.9 million last year.
The sharpest decline was in Manitoba where barley has been largely replaced by soybeans and corn. But Alberta hasn’t been immune either, falling from 3.4 million acres in 2012 to 2.5 million acres last year.
“Growers are moving away from barley to higher-value crops, like canola and wheat,” said Sereda. “The on-farm return on investment for barley has come under pressure when you’re making decisions against other commodities.”
There is “intense price competition” in both brewing and feed sectors, she added. The brewing industry has shifted more and more to adjuncts such as rice and corn to supplement malt and reduce costs. Beer makers are also sourcing lower-priced malt from other growing regions. Meanwhile, feeders are increasingly turning to

Ukraine: Unusually cold spring may reduce spring barley area
|
Ukraine is expected to harvest 26-28 million tonnes of maize and 7.7-8 million tonnes of barley in 2018, consultancy UkrAgroConsult said on April 11, warning that unusually cold spring weather had complicated the barley sowing campaign.
"There are risks not all the barley will be sown due to a late spring," it said.
This year farmers started sowing a month later than last year due to a cold and snowy spring and UkrAgroConsult said the best terms for sowing would expire next week.
A very short sowing campaign could also cut the area sown to maize and farmers may prefer to sow more sunflower in a bid to compensate the lost areas of barley and maize.
The consultancy said Ukraine could harvest 26-28 million tonnes of maize this year while its output of sunflower seed could total 14.2 to 14.5 million tonnes.
The harvest of rape seed is likely to reach 2.5 million tonnes, while soybean output could be around 3.7 million tonnes.
UkrAgroConsult said Ukraine's total grain crop could rise to around 62 million tonnes this year from 61.3 million in 2017.
Last year, Ukraine harvested 26.1 million tonnes of wheat; 24.1 million tonnes of maize; 8.3 million tonnes of barley; 12.2 million tonnes of sunseed;

Kenya: Diageo’s East African Breweries to start producing Captain Morgan rum locally, add other international spirits soon
|
Diageo’s East African Breweries (EABL) will start producing Captain Morgan rum locally as part of wider investment in its spirit business in response to growing demand.
The company told Reuters it has begun investing the 1.4 billion shillings ($13.88 million) earmarked for the spirits division. Its investment includes funding for a 20,000 bottles per hour distillery line that will double production at its plant on the outskirts of Nairobi.
The international brand Captain Morgan will be manufactured locally to cut costs and make high-end offerings more widely accessible to domestic consumers.
EABL’s domestic version of the spirit, Captain Morgan Gold, will retail at 800-900 shillings per 750 ml bottle — half the price of imported bottles. Production is slated to begin within the next month, the company said.
“The liquid is loved. What we are doing is to make sure we democratise it to make it more widely accessible,” said Andrew Kilonzo, EABL’s head of premium spirits sales.
EABL plans to produce other Diageo international spirits locally, he said without specifying brands.
Sales of spirits at EABL grew 20 percent in Kenya last year, marking a shift in the East African nation where beer, including EABL’s Tusker, has long been the preferred alcoholic beverage.
