USA: Cargill to close malt plant in Spiritwood, North Dakota
|
Citing a decline in demand for beer brewing malt, American agribusiness Cargill said it plans to close its malt plant in Spiritwood, North Dakota this fall, impacting some 55 workers at the facility, the company told local news organizations.
“The decision to close a plant is never easy, but reduced demand for six-row crops, a North Dakota climate not conductive to more in-demand two-row crops and low utilization of the plant made the closure necessary,” Cargill spokesperson April Nelson told the Jamestown Sun.
Malts made from two-row barley are often sought by large breweries because of their lower levels of proteins and enzymes and higher starch content compared to six-row barley malts, according to the American Homebrewers Association.
Nelson said the plant has reduced its production levels because farmers near the Spirtwood site primarily grow six-row barley, which is less in demand by brewers than two-row barley-based malts.
Workers at the plant will be offered severance pay and transition assistance, the Cargill spokesperson said in the Sun.
The Spiritwood site is one of two malt plants owned by the company in the U.S., according to information on the agribusiness’ website. Cargill’s other domestic malting operation is located in Sheboygan, WI.

Vietnam: Sabeco board proposes management reshuffle
|
The board of Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage, or Sabeco, has proposed a management reshuffle following Thai Beverage's acquisition of a 53.58% stake in the state brewer for $4.8 billion in December. Sabeco is scheduled to hold an extraordinary shareholder's meeting on April 23 to win approval of the proposals, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on April 16.
In a filing to the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange by Sabeco on April 13, the management board at the company has proposed three candidates as additional new members to the existing management board, which comprises four members. Meanwhile, it has asked shareholders' approval to dismiss the chairman who represents the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam's state owner of the brewer.
Among the three candidates is Koh Poh Tiong, a director at Fraser and Neave, a Singapore-based beverage company under Thai conglomerate TCC Group, which also owns Thai Beverage, the maker of Chang beer.
In January, Koh, from ThaiBev's group steering committee, addressed Sabeco employees for the first time as the majority shareholder and vowed to lead Sabeco to growth of around 40% to 50% in its home market in the coming years, leveraging the Thai group's existing retail network of supermarkets and convenience

India: Kingfisher Beer continues to top India’s most trusted alcoholic beverage brands list
|
Beleaguered Vijay Mallya may be embroiled in controversies but Kingfisher Beer brand, owned by Mallya-promoted United Breweries, continues to top the most trusted alcoholic beverage brands list, the Business Standard reported on April 18.
As per the Brand Trust Report 2018, Kingfisher Beer, Black Dog and Budweiser are the top three most trusted alcoholic beverage brands.
Kingfisher Beer has maintained its leadership position ...and remain the unmitigated leader for the last eight years of the Brand Trust Report, TRA Research CEO N Chandramouli said.
Kingfisher is the flagship brand of United Breweries Ltd. In August last year, United Breweries announced its Chairman Vijay Mallya had ceased to be director of the company following market regulator Sebi's order against him.
Mallya, who had fled to the UK in March 2016, is also wanted in India for Kingfisher Airlines' default on loans worth nearly Rs 9,000 crore and some other matters.
Royal Stag, Signature, Johnnie Walker ranked number four, five and six, respectively. Carlsberg, Blenders Pride, Tuborg and Imperial Blue are the other brand which figure in the top 10 list.
Over 2,450 respondents participated in the survey conducted by TRA Research across 16 cities and its findings have been compiled in The Brand Trust Report 2018.

Vietnam: Vietnam considers law limiting alcohol and beer sales
|
On April 13, 2018, the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Vietnam and the World Health Organization held a conference to introduce the main contents of the Draft Law on Preventing and Combatting Harmful Effects of Alcohol and Beer (the “Draft Law”). The Draft Law contains six chapters with 22 articles and is aimed at preventing and reducing harmful effects from alcohol and beer. The provisions introduce various measures geared toward reducing sales and controlling the production and quality of alcohol and beer supplied to the public, the Lexology reported on April 16.
One of the proposed measures to reduce alcohol and beer sales includes reducing the hours during which alcohol and beer may be sold. In this regard, the Draft Law proposes three possible measures: (1) limiting beer and alcohol sales from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; (2) limiting sales from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; or (3) limiting sales based on a phase-in to be set by the government. It is possible that special areas, such as tourist areas, recreation areas, and airports, could be exempt from such restrictions.
The Draft Law also proposes restrictions on promotions and advertising of alcohol and beer. For example,

Canada & USA: Barley acreage expected to only increase in Canada this year
|
Canadian barley exports in August-February 2017/18 were 1.358 mln tonnes, of which 1.022 mln to China. Canadian malting barley remains very popular with the Chinese brewing industry, H. M. Gauger Gmb reported on March 29.
The nation’s total barley exports are forecast to reach 1.6 mln tonnes; at present old and new crop barley (USD 265,- to 275,- FOB Pacific ports) are uncompetitive.
The smaller crop of 7.9 mln tonnes in 2017 and large malting barley exports led to an unprecedented shortage of feed barley in the Prairies, particularly in South Alberta. Barley prices rose to all-time highs and the traditional barley feeding country had to rely on massive corn imports.
Experts believe that good prices will entice farmers to grow more barley in 2018. Early estimates are for an acreage of 2.5 vs. 2.35 mln ha last year.
For the US, the USDA prospective barley planting report of March 29 was a surprise. Instead of an expected increase, the US barley acreage will drop from 1.0 mln to 0.925 mln ha this year. If yields equal those of last year, the production would be 2.85 mln tonnes (last year 3.1).
The U.S. malting capacity is 2.67 mln tonnes, equal

Ukraine: Barley prices at record high since 2014
|
As of 4 April, the cost of Ukrainian barley FOB Ukrainian ports increased to $208-218 per tonne, which is 27% higher than the price for the same period last year, the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB) reports.
The association said on its website that such a price for domestic grain crop is a record since the end of 2014.
“The main factor in the steady increase in barley prices over the past few months was the unstable demand from Saudi Arabia, which is the key importer of this grain in the world. In 2017, Ukraine shipped 2.07 million tonnes of barley to Saudi Arabia, or 57% of total barley exports from Ukraine,” analyst of agricultural markets of the UCAB Ilha Kharabara said.
This year, demand from Saudi Arabia is not sustainable – tenders for the purchase are infrequent, but volumes are quite significant. At the last tender, the Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) announced the purchase of 1 million tonnes of barley, at the previous one the nation purchased 0.96 million tonnes.
The tense world balance at the beginning of the marketing year supported the price increase for barley – world production fell to 142.4 million tonnes in 2017/2018, 3.5 million tonnes less than last year.
