USA: Cargill to close malt plant in Spiritwood, North Dakota
|
Citing a decline in demand for beer brewing malt, American agribusiness Cargill said it plans to close its malt plant in Spiritwood, North Dakota this fall, impacting some 55 workers at the facility, the company told local news organizations.
“The decision to close a plant is never easy, but reduced demand for six-row crops, a North Dakota climate not conductive to more in-demand two-row crops and low utilization of the plant made the closure necessary,” Cargill spokesperson April Nelson told the Jamestown Sun.
Malts made from two-row barley are often sought by large breweries because of their lower levels of proteins and enzymes and higher starch content compared to six-row barley malts, according to the American Homebrewers Association.
Nelson said the plant has reduced its production levels because farmers near the Spirtwood site primarily grow six-row barley, which is less in demand by brewers than two-row barley-based malts.
Workers at the plant will be offered severance pay and transition assistance, the Cargill spokesperson said in the Sun.
The Spiritwood site is one of two malt plants owned by the company in the U.S., according to information on the agribusiness’ website. Cargill’s other domestic malting operation is located in Sheboygan, WI.

Canada & USA: Barley acreage expected to only increase in Canada this year
|
Canadian barley exports in August-February 2017/18 were 1.358 mln tonnes, of which 1.022 mln to China. Canadian malting barley remains very popular with the Chinese brewing industry, H. M. Gauger Gmb reported on March 29.
The nation’s total barley exports are forecast to reach 1.6 mln tonnes; at present old and new crop barley (USD 265,- to 275,- FOB Pacific ports) are uncompetitive.
The smaller crop of 7.9 mln tonnes in 2017 and large malting barley exports led to an unprecedented shortage of feed barley in the Prairies, particularly in South Alberta. Barley prices rose to all-time highs and the traditional barley feeding country had to rely on massive corn imports.
Experts believe that good prices will entice farmers to grow more barley in 2018. Early estimates are for an acreage of 2.5 vs. 2.35 mln ha last year.
For the US, the USDA prospective barley planting report of March 29 was a surprise. Instead of an expected increase, the US barley acreage will drop from 1.0 mln to 0.925 mln ha this year. If yields equal those of last year, the production would be 2.85 mln tonnes (last year 3.1).
The U.S. malting capacity is 2.67 mln tonnes, equal

USA, MN: Boathouse Brothers Brewing Co.’s grand opening to be held on April 20
|
After years of work, it’s finally time for Prior Lake’s first craft brewery and taproom to open, the SW News Media reported on April 12.
A grand opening for Boathouse Brothers Brewing Co. will be held April 20 on Main Avenue in downtown Prior Lake.
And Prior Lake residents have been patiently (and in some cases not-so-patiently) waiting.
Co-owners Kevin Lethert and Emmett Swartout had tested some of their home brews on the public during Lakefront Days in August 2016. In May 2017, the duo finalized a lease on the downtown location, before completely remodeling the place.
“I’m ecstatic to pour everybody a beer in Prior Lake and the surrounding south metro area,” Lethert said. “We worked hard and long and took a long time to put this together but we’re very proud of it and can’t wait to share it with them.”
Throughout the process, when there was any news on the business, the pair kept the waiting public updated on social media, usually to a chorus of “can’t wait” comments.
“We want to thank everybody for their patience while we were working to get it open and we’re anxious to get a pint in their hand,” Swartout said.
In November 2016, the Facebook page posted

USA, MD: Denizens Brewing Company signs lease to launch second brewery in Silver Spring
|
Denizens Brewing Company launched as a brew pub in Silver Spring, Md., in 2014. Serving their beer on site as well as through self-distribution of cans and kegs, the brewery quickly saturated their capacity and began looking for locations to expand production. Denizens found an opportunity for a significant expansion in the Riverdale Park Station on Route 1 in Riverdale Park late last year, The Hyattsville Life & Times reported on April 13.
Denizens recently signed a lease for a 12,000-square-foot space in the new shopping center adjacent to the Whole Foods Market and Gold’s Gym. The space will be a mixture of a full-service bar and restaurant as well as a brewery to create the flagship beers of the Denizens brand.
“9,000 square feet of production space will house a 30-barrel brewery and up to 10 60-barrel fermenters,” explains Emily Bruno, the director of business operations of Denizens Brewing Company. “The remaining 3,000 square feet will be the tap room with indoor and outdoor seating.”
The new pub will have 20 draft lines with Denizens beer, a mixture of flagship offerings produced at the new location as well as seasonal and barrel-aged beers brewed at the Silver Spring location. The new

USA, KS: Nortons Brewing Company hopes to open in downtown Wichita soon
|
If all goes as planned, Wichita will soon have a big new downtown microbrewery that's family friendly and serves top-rate burgers and "bacon crack" topped funnel cakes, the Wichita Eagle reported on April 12.
Dan and Becky Norton are almost ready to open their new Nortons Brewing Company in a 9,000-square-foot building at 125 N. St. Francis, which is right across the street from Bite Me BBQ. Their plan, which should be safe as long as city inspectors and licensors stay on schedule, is to be ready to open on Friday, April 20.
"I'm just really excited to share this place with Wichita," said Dan, who last fall left his longtime role as head brewer at River City Brewing Co. to open his own place. "We've been dreaming about it for so long, and it's really surreal that it's this close to happening."
The business, which took over a cavernous space once occupied by a boat dealership, will feature a large dining room with lots of brewery-appropriate bench seating and tall tables. It also has a long bar with lots of stools. The dining room seats 158.
Visitors will be able to order one of Dan's 12 beers brewed on-site as well as burgers,

Canada, NB: Flying Boats Brewing now open to public in Dieppe
|
Atlantic Canada Beer Blog reports that Dieppe’s Flying Boats Brewing has completed the move and expansion that was announced last summer, and has now opened to the public for the first time.
Flying Boats was launched in 2015 by Marc Melanson as a 2-barrel nanobrewery based in his garage in Shediac, New Brunswick. The size and location meant that there was no public access to the brewery, and beers were only available on tap at local bars and restaurants.
Now located at 700 Malenfant Blvd. in Dieppe, the new Flying Boats facility features a 15-barrel brewhouse, and a taproom and retail store where visitors are able to try flights and pints on-site, and pick up growlers and cans to go. Two brands – Dixie Clipper IPA and Empress Irish Red Ale – are currently available in 473 ml cans, with several other beers pouring on tap.

USA, NC: King Canary Brewing Company slated to open in Mooresville in May
|
Lovers of hoppy, sweet, sour and malty brews across the state are recognizing April as North Carolina Beer Month. And as this sixth-annual celebration - in appreciation of the state's ever-growing beer culture - reaches mid-month, two Mooresville brewers are preparing their flavors for future patrons of King Canary Brewing Company, the Mooresville Tribune reported on April 15.
Founders Matt and Andrea Gravina have renovated the 4,500-square-foot facility at 562 Williamson Road - former home of Spadels - into a welcoming, family-friendly, multi-story brewery. With a year of work behind them, only finishing touches remain before inviting the public to taste Mooresville's newest beer offerings.
“I like hops a lot, but we’ll have a good mix of stuff,” said Matt, who began home brewing five years ago. He hopes for a tap list that includes an IPA, double IPA, pale ale, porter, amber ale and Berliner Weisse - a sour beer.
The brewery is slated to open in May. Although King Canary was already preparing for a spring opening, it wasn’t until early March, when the stainless-steel tanks arrived, that Matt turned his small-batch homebrews into larger-production beers.
“People want to come the first time you’re brewing and you’re like,

Canada, AB: The Dandy Brewing Company launches new and expanded brewery in Calgary
|
The Daily Beer reports that The Dandy Brewing Company has opened its new and expanded brewery in Calgary’s Ramsay neighbourhood.
In the works since last spring, the second location features a spacious taproom with 20 taps pouring Dandy beers and select guest brews, as well as a cocktail menu, rotating wine list, and a food menu with an American Tapas theme. As reported by CTV News, the space is also designed to be fully accessible and barrier-free for those with disabilities.
Located at 2003 11th Street SE, the new Dandy taproom is currently in soft opening mode, with full business hours to be announced soon. The original Dandy taproom at #11 1826 25th Ave NE is currently closed for renovations, but will reopen at a date to be announced.

USA, VA: Deschutes Brewery to delay and likely scale down planned brewery in Roanoke
|
Deschutes Brewery will delay and likely scale down its planned brewery in Roanoke, the Roanoke Times reported on April 16.
But the Bend, Oregon-based craft beer brewer will buy the land where it intends to build as a show of good faith that they are still headed to Roanoke eventually.
The brewer announced in 2016 after months of courting that it would build its East Coast expansion in the Roanoke Centre for Industry and Technology — a $95 million project that would ultimately employ 108 people in its first phase, according to the company. But the privately held company didn’t plan to break ground until June 2019.
Now, city and Deschutes officials say market conditions have caused the brewery to pause and re-evaluate the timing and scale of its expansion. The decision came just about three weeks before Deschutes was to have closed on the purchase of 49 acres of land where the plant is planned.
The news likely will make skeptics who raised eyebrows at the brewery’s slow-moving construction plans feel vindicated, and deal a blow to Roanoke boosters who were lifted by the high profile economic win of landing the Deschutes deal.
The craft beer industry is still growing, but last year saw

Vietnam: Sabeco board proposes management reshuffle
|
The board of Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage, or Sabeco, has proposed a management reshuffle following Thai Beverage's acquisition of a 53.58% stake in the state brewer for $4.8 billion in December. Sabeco is scheduled to hold an extraordinary shareholder's meeting on April 23 to win approval of the proposals, the Nikkei Asian Review reported on April 16.
In a filing to the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange by Sabeco on April 13, the management board at the company has proposed three candidates as additional new members to the existing management board, which comprises four members. Meanwhile, it has asked shareholders' approval to dismiss the chairman who represents the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam's state owner of the brewer.
Among the three candidates is Koh Poh Tiong, a director at Fraser and Neave, a Singapore-based beverage company under Thai conglomerate TCC Group, which also owns Thai Beverage, the maker of Chang beer.
In January, Koh, from ThaiBev's group steering committee, addressed Sabeco employees for the first time as the majority shareholder and vowed to lead Sabeco to growth of around 40% to 50% in its home market in the coming years, leveraging the Thai group's existing retail network of supermarkets and convenience

Ukraine: Barley prices at record high since 2014
|
As of 4 April, the cost of Ukrainian barley FOB Ukrainian ports increased to $208-218 per tonne, which is 27% higher than the price for the same period last year, the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UCAB) reports.
The association said on its website that such a price for domestic grain crop is a record since the end of 2014.
“The main factor in the steady increase in barley prices over the past few months was the unstable demand from Saudi Arabia, which is the key importer of this grain in the world. In 2017, Ukraine shipped 2.07 million tonnes of barley to Saudi Arabia, or 57% of total barley exports from Ukraine,” analyst of agricultural markets of the UCAB Ilha Kharabara said.
This year, demand from Saudi Arabia is not sustainable – tenders for the purchase are infrequent, but volumes are quite significant. At the last tender, the Saudi Grains Organization (SAGO) announced the purchase of 1 million tonnes of barley, at the previous one the nation purchased 0.96 million tonnes.
The tense world balance at the beginning of the marketing year supported the price increase for barley – world production fell to 142.4 million tonnes in 2017/2018, 3.5 million tonnes less than last year.

India: Kingfisher Beer continues to top India’s most trusted alcoholic beverage brands list
|
Beleaguered Vijay Mallya may be embroiled in controversies but Kingfisher Beer brand, owned by Mallya-promoted United Breweries, continues to top the most trusted alcoholic beverage brands list, the Business Standard reported on April 18.
As per the Brand Trust Report 2018, Kingfisher Beer, Black Dog and Budweiser are the top three most trusted alcoholic beverage brands.
Kingfisher Beer has maintained its leadership position ...and remain the unmitigated leader for the last eight years of the Brand Trust Report, TRA Research CEO N Chandramouli said.
Kingfisher is the flagship brand of United Breweries Ltd. In August last year, United Breweries announced its Chairman Vijay Mallya had ceased to be director of the company following market regulator Sebi's order against him.
Mallya, who had fled to the UK in March 2016, is also wanted in India for Kingfisher Airlines' default on loans worth nearly Rs 9,000 crore and some other matters.
Royal Stag, Signature, Johnnie Walker ranked number four, five and six, respectively. Carlsberg, Blenders Pride, Tuborg and Imperial Blue are the other brand which figure in the top 10 list.
Over 2,450 respondents participated in the survey conducted by TRA Research across 16 cities and its findings have been compiled in The Brand Trust Report 2018.

Vietnam: Vietnam considers law limiting alcohol and beer sales
|
On April 13, 2018, the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Vietnam and the World Health Organization held a conference to introduce the main contents of the Draft Law on Preventing and Combatting Harmful Effects of Alcohol and Beer (the “Draft Law”). The Draft Law contains six chapters with 22 articles and is aimed at preventing and reducing harmful effects from alcohol and beer. The provisions introduce various measures geared toward reducing sales and controlling the production and quality of alcohol and beer supplied to the public, the Lexology reported on April 16.
One of the proposed measures to reduce alcohol and beer sales includes reducing the hours during which alcohol and beer may be sold. In this regard, the Draft Law proposes three possible measures: (1) limiting beer and alcohol sales from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; (2) limiting sales from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.; or (3) limiting sales based on a phase-in to be set by the government. It is possible that special areas, such as tourist areas, recreation areas, and airports, could be exempt from such restrictions.
The Draft Law also proposes restrictions on promotions and advertising of alcohol and beer. For example,
