DRY HOPPING FROM A MEDIA

ABSTRACT
We know many of the factors that have an impact on dry
hopping and the resulting flavour, however, a German
research team looked further into the role of the dry
hopped medium in dry hop flavour development. They
were able to show an increase for almost all measured
hop components with the increase of ethanol addition,
combining as dipol hydrophilic and lipophilic properties.
They found that the octanol-water partition coefficient
value (log p) of a hop oil component is a key attribute
for the transfer rate from hop pellets into beer and the
resulting concentration of several compounds in dryhopped
beer - though biotransformation reactions might
still change the picture.

USA: MillerCoors sales drop in Q1 2018
|
The parent of MillerCoors said on May 2 that a soft start to the year in the U.S. beer market and an issue with under-shipping product to U.S. distributors resulted in a drop in sales and operating income for the Chicago-based brewer.
MillerCoors, which operates breweries in Milwaukee and represents the United States portion of parent company Molson Coors Brewing Co.’s operations, recorded net sales for the first quarter of 2018 of $1.65 billion, a 5.8 percent decline from $1.75 billion the year before, Denver-based Molson Coors reported. Earnings before taxes and other expenses dropped 12.2 percent to $388.9 million from $442.9 million a year ago.
U.S. brand volume decline 3.8 percent, largely because of lower volume in the premium light segment that includes MillerCoors’ top sellers Coors Light and Miller Lite. Sales-to-wholesalers were hurt by the weak U.S. industry conditions, and the timing of wholesale inventories, which included delays in shipments to wholesalers in parts of the country related to the launch of a new ordering system at its brewery in Golden, Colo., that took longer to ramp up than expected, Molson Coors said.

USA, VA: New Realm Brewing to open second brewery in Virginia Beach
|
New Realm Brewing, the Southeast-based craft brewery co-founded by Carey Falcone, Bob Powers and Mitch Steele, has announced plans to open a second brewery and taproom in Virginia Beach. New Realm has partnered with The Miller Group to lease the 58,000 square-foot facility which formerly housed the Green Flash Brewing Company. The announcement follows the recent purchase of brewing equipment located at the Virginia Beach facility.
“As we looked at ways to serve our growing base of New Realm fans, it was important to us that we remain a local brewer in the Southeast, expand capacity, increase innovation and stay true to our core values,” said Carey Falcone, CEO and co-founder of New Realm Brewing. “When the opportunity came up to partner with The Miller Group to lease the Virginia Beach facility, purchase newer, high-quality brewing equipment at a great value and create jobs in Virginia Beach, we knew we needed to seize it.”

Canada, ON: Grey Matter Beer Company now open in Kincardine, Ontario
|
Some new flavour has been poured into downtown Kincardine and now for the first time in the town's history a licensed manufacturing brewing company exists.
For many years locals opening the doors to 726 Queen Street Kincardine meant shopping for clothing, but now the building is host to Grey Matter Beer Company, the Kincardine News reported on April 27.
The doors opened Thursday April 26, 2018 and the story of a long journey has been told through the transformation of the building.
"There were quite a few struggles... the building was in rough shape going into this," said Grey Matter president and brewmaster Michael Hueftlein, who said setting up the brewing equipment was a challenge in itself.
"The tanks wouldn't fit in in the beginning. They came in one piece... but with some brute force and some stubborn Germans, we managed to get them in," Hueftlein laughed.
Small projects one at a time rolled into the massive undertaking of renovating the large space and turning into to an operating brewing business which now features the end product to the public.

USA, KY: Angry Fish Brewing sets opening date for June 2
|
A brewery called Angry Fish Brewing is swimming onto the Lexington scene, the Free Times reported on April 30.
Now, Angry Fish has set its opening date for June 2.
Located in an appropriately industrial area behind a shopping center on Highway 1, this operation started in a garage and finally found its home base at 106 Fabrister Lane in Lexington recently, and Joseph Turner and friends have been working around the clock to ready the space and their array of lake-themed brews for opening.
The original plan was to locate in the Ballentine area, but “Lexington made it easier to do business than Richland County,” says Turner.
The space, which formerly housed JAKAL Distillery, was ready to go with floor drains, but has been since upfitted with upcycled tin, handsome wood finishes and other decorative touches to give it a bait and tackle shop feel, Turner says.
Six fermenters are churning away to create their offerings, which range from traditional to unusual, such as an American wheat, blackberry gose, key lime gose, and a coffee double IPA, to name a few.
They’ll be operating under a brewery license, limiting patrons to 48 ounces per person, and will have a crowler station for taking home brews.

USA, NC: King Canary Brewing Co. coming to Mooresville in late May
|
Mooresville will gain a new brewery in late May, the Charlotte Business Journal reported on April 27.
Matt and Andrea Gravina are transforming a 4,500-square-foot space into King Canary Brewing Co.
King Canary aims to be a family-friendly brewery and community gathering spot.
It will be located at 562 Williamson Road in Mooresville.
“I think people are looking forward to having a place closer to home,” Matt says.
The couple left behind their careers in corporate America to take a chance on craft brewing.
The former forensic accountant is now King Canary’s head brewer. He’s been homebrewing for years, taken numerous classes and completed course work to hone his skills.
Andrea will handle design, marketing strategy and community outreach.
“I think we wanted more of a creative outlet of a career,” Matt says.
They’re putting the finishing touches on King Canary, which is in a two-story house converted for commercial use. It sits on Lake Norman as well.
They bought that building in February 2017 and have been working to remodel it.
“We were looking for a place that wold not be like an industrial warehouse,” Andrea says.

USA, KY: Henderson Brewing Co. granted license to operate as microbrewery
|
While one established local business - Farmer and Frenchman winery - struggles to keep its liquor license, another unique and alcohol-based business is celebrating obtaining their Kentucky permit to brew beer, The Gleaner reported on April 27.
The Kentucky Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control this week granted Henderson Brewing Co., LLC its license to operate as a microbrewery.
According to a news release from Henderson Brewing Company, "The approval signifies the first time a licensed brewery has resided in Henderson in over 80 years. A microbrewery license enables Henderson Brewing Co. to begin brewing beer after it passes some final inspections at the local level."
And to brew that beer, HBC's founders now have more than a piece of paper.
A social media post on Friday afternoon showed bags of grain being piled up in the brewroom of the Henderson Brewing Company on Second Street in Henderson.
"Our first grain shipment arrived, and Doug is like a kid in a candy store! Looks like we'll need to build more shelves."

USA, SD: Obscure Brewing Co. hopes to open its doors in Sioux Falls this fall
|
The booming east side of Sioux Falls is getting its own craft beer brewery, KSFY reported on April 30.
Obscure Brewing Co. expects to break ground in the next few weeks in a retail area on the north side of Arrowhead Parkway. The 4,400-square-foot building that will be set into a hillside will include a tasting room that will look down into the production area.
The business is the longtime dream of Don Choate, who is starting the brewery with his wife, Jackie, and minority partner Mike Nussbaum, who will be the brewer.
“If everything goes to plan, it should be open in the fall,” Choate said.

Canada, ON: Cambridge’s Grand River Brewing put up for sale
|
According to a commercial realty listing posted by Royal LePage Action Realty, Grand River Brewing in Cambridge, Ontario has been put up for sale, Canadian Beer News reported on April 30.
While a comment on an accompanying video suggests that the listing is at least 9 months old, industry rumours of the brewery’s closure appear to have led to it being uncovered and discussed on social media in recent days.
When reached for comment, Grand River co-owner Bob Hanenberg told CBN that “a tentative deal fell through when the purchaser got cold feet.” He also refuted the closure rumours, stating that it will be “business as usual” at the brewery while it looks for a new buyer.

USA, ME: Birchwood Brewing eyeing opening in Gray sometime in August
|
Plans for a new business are brewing in Gray.
Partners Andrew Sanborn and Wes Hewey, both Gray-New Gloucester High School graduates, hope to open Birchwood Brewing sometime in August just south of Gray Village on Route 100, KeepMeCurrent.com reported on April 27.
Both metal fabricators by trade, Sanborn and Hewey say that they’ve helped build brewing systems for several other Maine breweries and realized they could make their own beer.
After five or six years of home brewing, with good reviews from friends, they’re ready to try their own taproom.
“We decided to build our own system one day — and make some good beer,” Sanborn said.
They specialize in American ales and lagers, and plan to have rotating taps that will include three flagship beers: a brown, a wheat and an IPA.
Birchwood is named after the road that Sanborn lives on in Poland. The taproom would be open to the public 30 hours per week, according to Birchwood’s application to the Gray Planning Board.

Ukraine & Russia: Ukraine increases barley exports in March, Russia in July-February 2017/18

Barley exports from Ukraine increased substantially in March compared to February 2018. They totaled 110.5 thousand tonnes - up 66% from February (66.7 thousand tonnes) but down 47% from March 2017 (208.4 thousand tonnes), UkrAgroConsult reported on May 2.
Ukrainian exporters supplied more than 4 mln tonnes of barley to foreign markets in the first nine months of MY 2017/18 (July-March), i.e. 15% less than at the same time last season.
As before, this season’s main end markets for Ukrainian barley include Saudi Arabia, China, the European Union, and Libya. The share of Turkey continues to grow. During the reporting period, Ukraine supplied 25% more barley to this market than during the whole of last season.
Due to a substantial rise in Ukrainian barley shipments to China (up 163% on the year), less was exported to end markets such as Libya, Iran, Israel, Tunisia etc. In addition, this season Ukraine shipped no barley to the UAE, Oman, Egypt, Bangladesh and some other countries.

New Zealand: Moa Brewing teams up with Constellation Brands to create joint selling force
|
Moa Brewing Co, the largest New Zealand-owned brewer, has teamed up with Constellation Brands New Zealand, makers of leading wine brands Kim Crawford, Selaks and Crafters Union, to create MoBev, a joint selling force focussed on the New Zealand market, Voxy reported on April 30.
Both Moa and Constellation have been in strong growth over the past year and this move is expected to enhance this performance whilst opening new opportunities for both businesses. With a wider portfolio, this new selling force will expand its reach to service more beverage moments and occasions (the inspiration behind the name MoBev). The companies also plan to work together in Australia, where they will share existing sales resources.
Moa CEO Geoff Ross and Constellation President Simon Towns say the collaboration creates a beverage portfolio and servicing model that delivers benefits to both customers and consumers.
Craft beer is a powerful contributor of alcohol-beverage growth right now, Towns adds.

Mozambique: Tax Authority pushing ahead with plans to impose fiscal stamps on beer
|
The Mozambican Tax Authority (AT) is pushing ahead with plans to impose fiscal stamps on bottled and canned beer, despite warnings from the drinks industry that the stamps may lead to a reduction, rather than an increase, in tax revenue, AllAfrica.com reported on May 2.
According to a report in the May 2nd issue of the Maputo daily "Noticias", the AT will begin to test the technology next week.
Currently only one company produces beer in Mozambique, CDM (Beers of Mozambique), with breweries in Maputo, Beira and Nampula. Both CDM and the association of drinks producers (ABIBA) have warned of reduced revenue, if putting fiscal stamps on the final product reduces the speed of bottling.
The CDM production lines can fill between 60,000 and 120,000 bottles per hour. If adding the fiscal stamp slows down the line, then less beer will be produced, and less will be consumed.
CDM points out that only four countries in the world put fiscal stamps on beer, and all of them are Muslim-majority countries. Furthermore CDM is already one of Mozambique's major taxpayers, and nobody has ever accused it of tax evasion.

Nigeria: Guinness Nigeria announces appointment of new CEO
|
Guinness Nigeria Plc has announced the appointment of Baker Magunda as its new CEO. The former CEO, Peter Ndegwa, will take a new role at Guinness parent company, Diageo Plc, the Nairametrics reported on May 2.
This is Guinness fourth CEO in 5 years. In 2015, it appointed Mr. John O’Keefe as CEO taking over from Seni Adetu, a Nigerian. Within 6 months of taking the appointment, John was promoted President, Diageo Africa, making room for Peter Ndegwa (Kenyan) to take over.
Baker Magunda will join Guinness Nigeria from Diageo-owned Meta Abo Breweries in Ethiopia. Under Baker’s tenure, Meta Abo has seen the launch of the Guinness brand in the country and a strong innovation pipeline of brands brought to market.

New Zealand: Pint of beer in Auckland is the 24th most expensive pint in the world

A pint of beer in an Auckland restaurant costs on average NZ$9.05 making it the equal 24th most expensive pour in the world, Stuff.co.nz reported on May 2.
A survey of beer prices from Finder New Zealand looked at how much beer costs in 177 cities around the world, and the nation is paying nine times more than the cheapest.
The results were compiled from cost of living sites Numbeo and Expatistan and are based on a 500ml pour of domestic beer in a restaurant.
Auckland was New Zealand's representative city and the cost has been converted to New Zealand dollars.
The NZ$9.05 pint was nearly double the global average, which was about NZ$4.96.
Australia (Sydney, NZ$8.75), Japan (Tokyo, NZ$7.85), Canada (Toronto, NZ$8.01), South Africa (Johannesburg, NZ$2.92) were all cheaper.
The cheapest beer is in Caracas, Venezuela, at NZ$1.
Dearer than New Zealand were the UK (London, NZ$9.32), France (Paris, NZ$10.79) and the United States (New York, NZ$10.89).
Norway (Olso, NZ$14.04) and Iceland (Reykjavik, NZ$15.59) were much dearer, but the most expensive pint of all was in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, which set you back NZ$16.80.

Zimbabwe: Delta Corporation Limited’s investments in barley contracting scheme total almost $3 mln

Listed beverages manufacturer Delta Corporation Limited says it has so far spent close to $3 million on its barley contract farming scheme targeting a yield of 33 000 tonnes this year, the Chronicle reported on May 2.
Over the years, the beverages producer has financed the production of barley and sorghum through a contract arrangement to boost the crops’ supply at the firm. The two crops are some of the raw materials required by the company.
In an interview, Delta corporate affairs executive, Mrs Patricia Murambinda, said 91 percent of the sorghum under the contract scheme was coming from communal farmers while nine percent was from commercial farmers.
“Looking at malting barley, we have 5 863 hectares which we have contracted and we want to deliver 33 000 tonnes of barley from the 47 commercial farmers that we contracted.
“Under this scheme, we have spent almost $3 million and planting is in progress at the moment and it will continue until end of June,” she said.
Mrs Murambinda said in the 2017/18 season, they contracted 6 957 hectares of red malt sorghum and the company, through the scheme during the period under review, has supported 2 977 households.

World: AB InBev accuses Heineken of infringing four of its patents

Anheuser-Busch (AB) InBev is suing rival Heineken for infringing patents related to the storage of beer in kegs, the World Intellectual Property Review reported on May 2.
In a claim filed at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York on Monday, April 30, AB InBev accused Heineken of infringing four of its patents.
The patents in question are US numbers 9,162,372; 9,517,876; 9,994,453; and 9,555,572. The patents relate to a method of storing beer in a keg using a “blow-moulded bag-in-container”.
Heineken’s allegedly infringing products are the BrewLock system and the Blade, which are described as “blow-moulded bag-in-container bottles”.
According to the claim, draft beer is traditionally stored in stainless steel kegs and is dispensed by introducing gas directly into the keg, forcing the beer out. However, the gas can affect the quality of the beer.
AB InBev’s bag-in-container bottle comprises a vent which extends through the neck of the bottle and into the keg, between the inner bag and the outer container, preserving the taste of the beer.
