WILD HOPS IN ITALY
ABSTRACT
Wild hops can be found almost everywhere - including
Italy. Maybe some wild hops found in Umbria, Italy can
help in future breeding to create new hop varieties. For
this reason a group of Italian researchers have an inventory
of the germplasm for a number of different wild hops.

Thailand & Vietnam: Fifa World Cup expected to boost on-trade beer sales in Thailand and Vietnam
|
The Fifa World Cup competition is expected to boost on-trade sales and consumption of Thai Beverage’s beers, not only in Thailand but also in Vietnam, say analysts.
“We expect the World Cup event happening in June and July to stimulate on-trade consumption,” says RHB Securities while CGS-CIMB Securities says it is hopeful that World Cup festivities could catalyse beer sales in 3Q18.
To recap, ThaiBev’s results for the 2Q18 ended March have improved sequentially, held up by a recovery in spirit volumes sold in Thailand as well as acquisitions in the spirits and food segments, the Edge Singapore reported on May 16.
However, on-trade beer consumption reportedly remains weak, especially in the upcountry areas. As such, volumes were negatively impacted.
Earnings contributions from the acquisition of Saigon Beer Alcohol Beverage Corp (Sabeco) were also eroded by acquisition and finance costs.
Meanwhile, spirits segment continues to be resilient due to higher proportion of off-trade demand. The proportion of brown spirit sales has also increased relative to white spirits.
“We are optimistic on this trend, since brown spirits have a higher price point per bottle and could drive revenue growth faster than white spirits,” says RHB analyst Juliana Cai.
Phillip Securities analyst Soh Lin Sin says ThaiBev’s existing alcoholic

Canada: Beer industry urges politicians to hike up marijuana taxes
|
When it comes to smoking weed, the grass is a little greener in Canada. Not only is the Great White North working to completely legalize cannabis this summer, the overall cost of pot is significantly cheaper north of the border. According to a recent analysis by Wikileaf, Canadians pay about 30% less for weed than their American neighbors, with an eighth of legal bud going for about C$40 in the States, and C$27.90 in Canada, the Merry Jane reported on May 17.
Medical cannabis has been legal in Canada since 2001, and the country's medical canna-businesses do not face the same restrictions that their American counterparts do. "Part of the reason cannabis is so much cheaper in Canada than the United States is there is a much longer history of legalization in Canada, and thus a larger supply of legal marijuana growers and sellers," Christian Parroco wrote for Wikileaf. "While cannabis companies in the United States can't even have bank accounts, in Canada there are publicly traded cannabis companies on the stock market. In anticipation of nationwide legalization this year, the supply of marijuana continues to grow."
Not everyone is psyched about the prospect of cheap, legally available weed, though. Canadians currently

India: Beer sales in Maharashtra decline on steep rise in prices
|
Despite a scorcher of a summer, the state of Maharashtra is cooling down less with beer, primarily because of a steep rise in its prices, the Mumbai Mirror reported on May 17.
Though the state has been a degree hotter in the past couple of months than it was last year during the same period, its consumption of beer has dropped by 6 per cent.
According to a senior official in the state excise department, in March and April this year Maharashtra consumed 5.91 crore litres of beer compared to 6.29 crore litres in the same two months in 2017.
Even year-on-year, consumption of beer in the state has dropped. In 2016-17, Maharashtra gulped down 32.48 crore litres of beer, while it dropped to 27.59 crore litres in financial year 2017-18.
In sharp contrast, Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) is moving off the shelves quickly with prices holding steady for the past two years. In April 2018, the state consumed 1.61 crore litres of IMFL, compared to 1.49 crore litres in the same month in 2017.
In October last year, the state government increased excise duty on beer by 17 per cent, but did not allow manufacturers to increase retail prices. This resulted in a
