USA, NY: Shmaltz Brewing Company sells Clifton Park brewing facility and assets
|
Shmaltz Brewing Company has sold its Clifton Park brewing facility and assets to Rich Buceta, owner of SingleCut Beersmiths, based in Astoria, Queens, the Times Union reported on May 22.
Beers under the Shmaltz name will continue with Shmaltz owner Jeremy Cowan retaining ownership and control of all its brands under the Shmaltz, He’brew Beer and New York 518/838 Craft, and Alphabet City lines. Cowan also retains the exclusive licensing agreement with CBS for the line of custom Star Trek-themed beers. The details were announced in a press release.
Dan Bronson, general manager of SingleCut Beersmiths, said in a phone interview that the acquisition follows the rapid success of the SingleCut company's brand on the east coast and in Europe. IPA drinkers may recognize the winged 18-Watt IPA from their brand.
The brewery, founded in 2012, produces 11,000 barrels of beer annually at its Queens facility and only will produce its own line of beers at the Clifton Park facility. Referred to as SingleCut North, Bronson said it will redesign the current tasting room and offer many of the same amenities as its current Queens tasting room — like a large vinyl record collection and live music programming — which will continue to

USA, NY: The Muddy River Farm Brewery already open in Undilla
|
Upstate New York's newest craft brewery just opened in Unadilla, CNY News reported on May 19.
The Muddy River Farm Brewery grows their own hops right in front of the brand new tap room. The owners are cousins Dustin and Jared Wood (with able assists from their wives Katie and Christina).
"We originally started growing hops to provide them to other brewers. It was a busy business and we usually sold out all of our hops before they were even picked," Dustin said.
"New York State farm brewers need to get their hops from New York State hop farms only, so we were here for them. And then we decided to use our own hops ourselves. And here we are at Muddy River Farm Brewery," Justin said.
The tap room is super comfortable with a seating area that holds 40 people and a large, expansive back lawn that goes all the way to the Susquehanna River.
"We like to let the outdoors in, here. People love our little tap/tasting room, but when we open our big back door, that's when the fun begins," they said. The rear of the building is enclosed by a massive 12' XC12' sliding door.

USA, WI: The Component Brewing hopes to open its doors in Milwaukee in early June
|
In early June, a homebrewer and his two cousins are opening the brewery in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee Magazine reported on May 18.
The Component Brewing family – two brothers and their cousin – are busy preparing a space in the Lincoln Warehouse in Bay View that had been occupied by Eagle Park Brewing before its move to the East Side earlier this year.
Component is waiting for necessary state approval – putting it on an uncertain timeline – but co-founder Jonathan Kowalske hopes to open in early June.
Kowalske, a 35-year-old Realtor, says he has been “obsessed” with craft beer and the local culture around it that has mushroomed in recent years. He has been homebrewing for five years and dreamed of opening up his own brewery.
When news broke in February that Eagle Park, one of his favorite haunts, was moving to the East Side, Kowalske inquired about the brewery space and equipment and found it was available. He rapidly assembled a business plan and found partners in two cousins: DJ, who works in banking, and his brother Steve Kowalske, an electrician.
The trio had become beer appreciators together over the past few years, catalyzed by a Christmas gathering a few years ago to

USA, IL: Black & Gray Brewing Co. aiming at opening by Labor Day weekend
|
What started as a hobby soon will become a full-fledged business for Chris and Teresa Kennedy, who plan to open a nanobrewery this year in downtown East Dundee, the Chicago Daily Herald reported on May 21.
Black & Gray Brewing Co. is the first commercial tenant confirmed for the new development at 311 Barrington Ave., which contains space for retail, restaurants and upper-level apartments. The nanobrewery, which is taking over roughly 2,500 square feet, will include equipment, a tap room and a garage door opening to an outdoor patio, Chris Kennedy said.
Kennedy's passion for brewing beer began about three years ago when, at his wife's recommendation, he started trying out stovetop recipes at his Prairie View house. He later set up a brewing station in his garage before eventually building his own brew house and inviting family and friends over for tastings.
"We were excited about it," Kennedy said. "I started brewing every chance I could get."
A different nanobrewery had been slated for the 311 Barrington Ave. building since before construction began more than two years ago. The village updated its zoning regulations at the time to allow a small brewery to make up to 155,000 gallons of beer per year that

Canada, MB: Kilter Brewing loses planned location in Winnipeg
|
Kilter Brewing has announced that it has lost the planned location for its bricks-and-mortar brewery in Winnipeg’s West Broadway/Wolseley neighbourhood, the Canadian Beer News reported on May 18.
According to a post on the brewery’s website:
“Merely a few days before official possession, our landlords abruptly told us we would not be given our space and have not shown any openness to discuss the reasoning or willingness to work it out with us.
This setback comes two months after the location was originally announced, and just days before the brewhouse custom built for the space is due to arrive.”
Kilter founders and brothers Miguel, Julien, and Jerik Cloutier plan to continue brewing small batches on the pilot system they’ve installed at One Great City Brewing. They are also asking for assistance in finding another brewery location which meets the following criteria:
Centrally-located in Winnipeg
5,000 – 10,000 sq. ft. space

Japan: Some whiskeys in short supply due to increasing popularity overseas
|
Some Japanese whiskeys are in short supply due to their increasing popularity in overseas markets and a recent domestic boom of highballs, or whiskey and soda, The Japan News reported on May 21.
Under such circumstances, Suntory Spirits Ltd., an affiliate of Suntory Holdings Ltd., announced plans to suspend sales of two of its whiskeys — Hakushu 12 Years and Hibiki 17 Years — from June. While makers are preparing to increase production, the shortage will likely last for some time because of the lengthy whiskey aging process.
Since the suspension of sales of Hibiki and Hakushu was reported, customers have flocked to the whiskey corner at the Kintetsu department store flagship shop at the Abeno Harukas commercial complex in Osaka. “I’m shocked as they are my favorites,” said a 43-year-old company employee, who had looked in vain for the products at several stores.
The suggested retail prices are set at ¥8,500 for the Hakushu 12 Years and ¥12,000 for the Hibiki 17 Years, both excluding consumption tax. The department store has restricted the sale of the Hakushu 12 Years to one bottle per customer over the past few years and began refusing to accept reservations for the product about a month ago.

India: United Breweries to introduce offerings in all price categories
|
Beer maker United Breweries is planning to introduce offerings spanning all price points. It also plans to get into the craft beer segment, BusinessLine reported on May 23.
According to Samar Singh Sheikhawat, Chief Marketing Officer, the compaby will look at more launches in the super-premium category (within this fiscal).
Some of the premium brands that UB would like to introduce include the Dutch brand Amstel (from Heineken stable) — its first super premium strong beer — and compete with the likes of Carlsberg Elephant and other global ones. Its craft beer, in both mild and strong categories, is also expected to be launched within this year.
“Wherever there is the potential consumer for beer, we will have an offering from our portfolio to address that consumer. New products, marketing budgets and upping distribution is what we are looking at,” he told BusinessLine on the sidelines of a CII event.
It will look to grow its market share by expanding into more outlets with its current portfolio across Kingfisher and Heineken.
Some of the focus offerings will include Kingfisher Ultra, Kingfisher Ultra Max, Kingfisher and Heineken, apart from Kinghfisher Storm — which has already been well received.

India & Nepal: United Breweries launches its Kingfisher beer in Nepal
|
Tying up with Yeti Brewery, Indian beverage company United Breweries Ltd announced on May 18 the official launch of Kingfisher Beer in Nepal, The Himalayan Times reported.
Shekhar Ramamurthy, the managing director of United Breweries Ltd, told The Himalayan Times that United Breweries Ltd aims to be a part of the burgeoning beer industry of Nepal.
“We always wanted to be in Nepal and we had a brewery here a few years back that produced the popular Star Beer. However, it was shut down due to some labour issues,” informed Ramamurthy, adding that United Breweries has once again forayed into Nepal to become a part of the country’s growing beer industry.
Citing that Nepal is an important market, as the beer industry here has been growing rapidly for the past few years, Ramamurthy said that Kingfisher is a popular beer brand among youths and will target the same group in Nepal.
Ramamurthy believes that though per capita beer consumption is low in Nepal, the annual industry growth rate of almost 25 per cent witnessed in recent years has developed Nepal into a strategic and potential beer market.
On Kingfisher’s plans to create its space in a market brimming with other brands, Ramamurthy said, “Kingfisher is

Hungary: Heineken Hungary teams up with charity organization to revive local hops and help the poorest
|
Brewery Heineken Hungária is teaming up with charity Hungarian Interchurch Aid to revive local hops and provide a cash crop to some of the countryʼs poorest. New Minister of Agriculture István Nagy participated at the signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement, the Budapest Business Journal reported on May 23.
The Dutch brewing giantʼs local unit is donating HUF30 million to Hungarian Interchurch Aid, which will use the money to add hops to crops grown in a model rehabilitation program for underprivileged families in Kastélyosdombó (252 km southwest of Budapest, close to the border with Croatia), national news agency MTI reported.
Nagy noted that the area on which hops are grown in Hungary fell to just five hectares in 2011, from 550-550 hectares in the 1980s.
Heineken Hungária CEO José Matthijsse said that the brewer uses only locally grown barley for its "Soproni" brand beer.
Last year tensions arose between Heineken and the Hungarian government regarding a trademark dispute between the Dutch brewer and a Hungarian-owned craft brewery in Romania. The government applied added pressure by citing a ban on Communist and Nazi-era symbols to protest over Heinekenʼs long-used red star in its logo. It seems now, however, that all concerns have been smoothed out.

USA & South Korea: South Korea’s HiteJinro accused of copying Miller Lite logo
|
MillerCoors has recently filed an opposition suit against HiteJinro over an application the South Korean brewery filed last year to register the new logo for Hite lager as a trademark in the U.S., according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
The U.S. brewing giant has accused the Korean firm of copying the Miller Lite logo.
If the USPTO rules in favour of MillerCoors, HiteJinro will face a setback in its expansion in the U.S. market and will pay a significant amount of money for the damages the U.S. brewery claims.
HiteJinro has already spent a huge amount of money hiring attorneys for registering the logo, according to industry officials.
The Korean firm, which filed with the USPTO an intent-to-use application on February 14 last year, was about to register the logo for Hite as a U.S. trademark, because the trademark office published the trademark in its official gazette on January 9 this year.
The USPTO planned to approve the registration, if there was no objection by May 9.
However, MillerCoors filed an opposition suit that day, saying, “The word Hite in the logo is stylised in a Germanic font that is nearly identical to that of MillerCoors’ Lite.”
“The applicant and MillerCoors operate in
