HOPE NEVER DIES, BUT...
ABSTRACT
This vague idea, that glycosidase activity helps to
increase hop aroma in dry hopped beers, may just stay
a dream for now. Using beers dry hopped with Mosaic
and using beta-glucosidase derived from aspergillus
niger, a group of German researchers showed that the
enzyme activity did not increase the concentration of
the hop flavour components analyzed. However it was
shown that more thiols (3-MH, 3-MHA and 4MMP)
were found in the beer than were dosed. This may be
due to the activity of other enzymes in the yeast strains
used that were not monitored.

USA: Beer industry shrinking and not expected to show growth this year
|
The US beer industry keeps shrinking. Drinkers haven't been bellying up to the bar for years, and last year sales volumes were down another 1.2%, the Motley Fool reported on June 1.
But while megabrewers like Anheuser-Busch InBev and Molson Coors continue to see overall sales shrink, craft beer at least can say its business is still growing. While the heady double-digit growth rates of the past decade are probably a thing of the past, sales volumes still rose 5% in 2017 for craft brewers, and small and independent brewers account for nearly 13% of the total market by volume, according to a report in The Washington Post.
That's cold comfort for Boston Beer, the second-biggest craft brewer and arguably still the face of the craft beer industry. Even as it reports growth in sales of its hard cider, tea, and seltzer, its flagship Samuel Adams brand hasn't posted a single quarter of higher depletions in over three years. (Depletions are an industry benchmark for consumer demand that measures sales to distributors and retailers.)

UK: Highly educated and discerning consumers increasingly willing to try new beers
|
The increased availability of information about drinks online has created a generation of “highly educated and discerning” consumers who are less brand-loyal than their older counterparts, according to the managing director of Curious Brewery.
In an interview with The Morning Advertiser, Gareth Bath outlined his belief that consumers were no longer seeking “brands for life” but highlighted his company’s unique position as a beer, cider and wine producer as a key factor in retaining loyalty from customers.
“Customers are highly educated and discerning and they know what they want,” he said. “They have that information at their fingertips with their phone and, as a result, we are not seeing consumers having that brand for life in the same way.
“Increasingly in beer, consumers are willing to try new products,” he continued. “However, they still know what they like and they don’t like and there will be some gravitation towards brands that are consistent and that they trust. Quality and consistency are key whether you’re looking for new, unique, innovative or your go to beer. For us that is one of our anchor positions – that people can trust in us and in our quality as a drinks producer.

The Philippines: San Miguel Corp.’s much anticipated share sale may be delayed to Q4 2018

The much-anticipated share sale of conglomerate San Miguel Corp. may be delayed to the fourth quarter of 2018 to early 2019 pending several regulatory approvals, The Standard reported on June 1.
San Miguel Corp. president and chief executive Ramon Ang said in an interview at the sidelines of the annual stockholders’ meeting of Ginebra San Miguel Inc. the possible delay in the share sale of San Miguel Food and Beverage Inc. was not due to the current slump in the market.
“If your stock is good and your company is good, there is no need to worry about the market conditions. You just go ahead. San Miguel Food and Beverage is a very good company and we are confident we can sell the shares,” Ang said.
San Miguel Food is still waiting for SEC approval on an increase in the capital stock to P12 billion and the share swap. It is also awaiting the tax-free ruling of the Bureau of Internal Revenue also on the planned share swap.
The share sale of San Miguel Food will comply with the minimum public float requirement for listed companies.

New Zealand: DB Breweries paid NZ30.5 mln for craft brewer Tuatara last year
|
DB Breweries paid NZ$30.5 million for Kapiti boutique beer maker Tuatara Brewing Co last year as the country's major liquor companies beef up their craft beer credibility to reach consumers with a taste for high-end brews, the New Zealand Herald reported on June 1.
The Auckland-based brewer paid cash for the boutique firm in January last year in a deal attributing NZ$16.5 mln to the Tuatara brand and NZ$12.8 mln to goodwill, DB's 2017 financial statements show.
That trumps the potential NZ$25.1 mln price rival Lion - Beer, Spirits & Wine (NZ) put on Upper Hutt brewer Panhead Custom Ales, of which NZ$15.1 mln was up front and a further NZ$10 mln based on hitting earning targets.
Tuatara was set up in 2000 by the Vasta family, who stayed on through Rangatira Investments' stake in the brewer and have carried on under DB's ownership.
The former shareholders rejected an offer of $16.6m from a large player in the industry, but are now in dispute with Rangatira on whether the sale to DB triggered earn-outs.

Singapore & Japan: Tiger Beer launches in Japan with a pop-up bar
|
Singapore's homegrown brand Tiger Beer launched in Japan on Wednesday, May 30 with a pop-up bar, The Straits Times reported.
The brand, which dates back to 1932, was officially launched in Tokyo's Roppongi district.
As part of the launch, Tiger Beer created a pop-up bar called Tiger Yuki, with musical performances and street foods from both Singapore and Japan.
For the event, owner of Yishun Park Hawker Centre's Ah Tan Wings, Mr Tan Wee Yang, whipped up his signature har cheong kai or prawn paste chicken.
He also worked with Japanese chef Shoichi Ueda to create har cheong kai rice burgers.
Mr Tan was a recipient of the Tiger Street Food Support Fund, an initiative by the brand to promote Singapore's street food culture by disbursing funds to new and aspiring hawkers.
Brewed with malt, hops and yeast in a process that takes more than 500 hours, Tiger Beer is sold in more than 75 countries.

USA: International Trade Commission launches investigation into Heineken’s beer storing methods
|
The US International Trade Commission (ITC) has launched an investigation into Heineken’s methods for storing beer after the company was accused of patent infringement, the World Intellectual Property Review reported on June 1.
The ITC initiated the investigation on May 31, after Budweiser’s parent company, Anheuser-Busch (AB) InBev, filed a complaint with the ITC on April 30 claiming violations of section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930.
This complaint was based on a patent infringement claim that AB InBev filed against Heineken in April at the US District Court for the Southern District of New York.
In its claim before the district court, AB InBev alleged that the Netherlands-based company had infringed US patent numbers 9,162,372; 9,517,876; 9,994,453; and 9,555,572, which cover AB InBev’s method of storing beer in a keg using a “blow-moulded bag-in-container”.
The patents relate to a method of introducing pressurised gas into a bottle while preventing the gas from contacting the beer. This preserves the flavour and quality of the alcohol.
Draft beer is traditionally kept in stainless steel kegs and is dispensed by introducing gas directly into the keg, which forces the beer out and can therefore affect the quality of the beer.

India & UK: Vijay Mallya seeks to overturn Rs 10000 crore HC judgment
|
Economic offender Vijay Mallya has filed an appeal notice in the Court of Appeal here seeking to overturn a Rs 9,853-crore UK high court judgment against him, the Times of India reported on June 1.
On May 29, the 62-year-old lodged an application seeking permission to appeal the high court decision one day before the midnight on May 30 deadline, staff at the Court of Appeal confirmed to TOI on May 31. His appeal is being dealt with at the registry and is yet to be assigned a case number.
Mallya has filed both a notice of appeal and a skeleton argument in support of his application for permission to appeal, TOI has been told. The former liquor baron is seeking to appeal the registration of the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT), Karnataka judgment dated January 19, 2017, with the English courts under the Foreign Judgments (Reciprocal Enforcement) Act of 1933, which states he owes Rs 9,853 crore, including interest, to 13 Indian banks as of November 22, 2017. The banks are seeking to recover sums lent to Kingfisher, which Mallya guaranteed, valued at Rs 10,261 crore today.

Ukraine: Barley exports reach 4 mln tonnes since the beginning of the current marketing year
|
Ukraine has exported almost 38 million tons of grain crops since the beginning of the current marketing year, Ukrinform reported on June 1, citing the department for phytosanitary security, seed production and planting control of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection.
"In particular, over 16.2 million tons of wheat (including 9.5 million tons of milling wheat and over 6.7 million tons of fodder wheat), 4 million tons of barley and over 16.5 million tons of corn have been exported," the statement reads.
Over 41.5 million tons of grains were exported over the same period last marketing year. In particular, almost 17 million tons of wheat (including almost 11.3 million tons of milling wheat and over 5.6 million tons of fodder wheat), 5.2 million tons of barley and over 18.7 million tons of corn were exported.
In addition, almost 4.8 million tons of oilseeds have been exported within the current MY, including 2.1 million tons of rapeseed, almost 2.7 million tons of soybeans. 3.8 million tons of oilseeds were exported over the same period last marketing year, including over 1 million tons of rapeseed and over 2.8 million tons of soybeans.

UK: Barley demand seeing a hike
|
UK barley demand is seeing a hike as higher wheat prices meant buyers sought a more cost effective grain for animal feed, FeedNavigator.com reported on June 1.
Barley feed usage jumped by around a fifth in the nine months through to March 2018. The UK’s total consumption this season is expected to reach the highest since 1991/92, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
However, barley usage may drop again as feed wheat’s premium over barley reduces.
Global grain markets continued to be influenced by weather forecasts and crop condition reports last week, said the AHDB in a market report.
“Conditions in some key global wheat growing regions continued to be of concern. Australia remained dry, hampering planting and crop development, it said. The Manitoba and Saskatchewan regions of Canada were also dry with rainfall required for crop development. Similarly, warm and dry weather has set in across Black Sea regions with crop conditions less than ideal.
“The US southern plains continued to lack moisture, and with harvest fast approaching crop conditions are unlikely to improve significantly.”
