Brewery news USA: Beer dollar sales up 4.1% through four weeks ending May 20
U.S. beer dollar sales increased 4.1 percent as volume sales grew 2.1 percent through the four weeks ending May 20, according to retail data provider IRI Worldwide.

IRI, a Chicago-based market research firm that tracks category-wide sales trends at off-premise retailers, reported that increased dollar sales in several segments — including cider (18.7 percent), imports (9.5 percent), domestic super premiums (15.8 percent), flavored malt beverages (8.5 percent) and non-alcoholic offerings (2.2 percent) — in the last four weeks beat year-to-date trends. The trends for the beer category’s largest segment, domestic premiums, also improved, down 0.5 percent compared to down 3.3 percent for the year.

Total U.S. dollar sales are up 1.7 percent to about $12.3 billion through the first 20 weeks of the year in its multi-outlet and convenience (MULC) universe of stores (grocery, drug, club, dollar, mass-merchandiser and military). Despite the increase in dollar sales, volume sales have decreased on the year.

So far this year, five segments — imports (5.3 percent), craft (2.9 percent), domestic super premium (9.9 percent), flavored malt beverages (6 percent) and cider (8.6 percent) — have posted positive volume sales trends.

Brewery news USA, TX: Bold Republic Brewing already open in Belton
Upon walking into Bold Republic Brewing, the smell of hops, wheat, and barley entice your senses. The craft beer business is new to Belton, but owner Patrick Hodges has had a talent and love for brewing up some of the most unique and flavorful beer you can find, the Belton Journal reported on May 31.

Born and raised in Temple, Hodges graduated from UMHB in 2010 with a Bachelors of Science degree and met his wife Adriane in Virginia Beach in 2011. Adriane is an incoming Spanish teacher at Belton High School, and their children attend Lakeview Elementary. Describing himself as a ‘family guy,’ Hodges says his inspiration for opening the brewery came from spending so much time on the East Coast.

“It was so community oriented and inclusive,” Hodges explained. “We could pack up our strollers and head down to a local brewery on a Saturday and not get ‘that look’ for bringing our kids along. Everyone had their kids with them too. Instead of competing with each other the breweries would collaborate and host fun festivals for everyone of all ages to enjoy. At these events, there would be live music, food trucks, beer tents, and people walking around with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Chatty Monks Brewing Company celebrates opening of new production facility in Reading
Beer-brewing continues to be a booming business in Berks County.

Nearly four years after opening a brewpub on Penn Avenue in West Reading, Chatty Monks Brewing Company has found the need to expand, WFMZ Allentown reported on June 4.

The company is celebrating the opening of a production facility at 101 North Carroll Street in southwest Reading.

A block party kicked things off on June 2. Chatty Monks is also celebrating with the sale of a new beer it brewed in collaboration with Free Will Brewing Company in Perkasie, Bucks County.

The new location, which once served as home to the Van Bennett Food Company, features several new fermenting tanks, a large walk-in cooler for storage, and space to age certain types of beers in wooden barrels.

The brewery will allow Chatty Monks to boost its capacity, thus meeting a growing demand for its beer at its original location in West Reading as well as at other venues in and around Berks, including FirstEnergy Stadium.

Brewery news USA, PA: Dock Street Brewing expands to second location in Philadelphia
Dock Street Brewing, the Philadelphia staple made famous as one of the country's first post-Prohibition craft breweries, is expanding beyond its brewpub and production space on Baltimore Avenue, PhillyVoice.com reported on June 4.

Rosemarie Certo, Dock Street's president and co-founder, told Philly.com that a new location is set for Washington Avenue – the warehouse at 2118 Washington Ave., to be exact, sitting between Graduate Hospital and Point Breeze.

Not unlike the effect that old warehouses-turned-breweries have had on industrial areas throughout Fishtown and Kensington, Certo hopes Dock Street's second location will help breathe new life to the Washington Avenue corridor which is blighted with abandoned buildings.

Dock Street's existing Cedar Park location, which added a cannery last year, will remain in business throughout and after the opening.

The new space marks several big changes in the way things currently operate for Dock Street, Philly.com reported. The canning operation will move entirely to the South Philly space, and most production will also move to South Philly. The original Dock Street will continue to serve limited-run beers on-site or in keg sales.

The shift also means more beer. The bigger space, clocking in around 10,300 square feet, will enable Dock Street to go from producing 2,000 barrels ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, TN: Yee-Haw Brewing Company preparing second location in Pigeon Forge
Yee-Haw Brewing Company is ready to grow and the next location to call home for the craft brewery will be Pigeon Forge, Tenn., according to owner Joe Baker. Yee-Haw will be located at 131 Island Drive in Pigeon Forge and expects to open in mid-June, Brewbound reported on June 4.

The award-winning brewery will open a 2,275 square foot taproom and experimental brewing system next door to Ole Smoky Moonshine at The Island. The location will offer an extensive line of merchandise, food and up 20 taps to serve all Yee-Haw Brewing products. This location will be the first to offer Yee-Haw’s expanded product line of large format bottles of bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey aged beers.

“We are excited to be a part of the already great offering for the millions of visitors to The Island in Pigeon Forge. The atmosphere of quality music and other great attractions is the perfect place for us to showcase our brand and introduce guests to some of the great beer being brewed here in Tennessee,” said Baker.

“Our focus at Yee-Haw Brewing is to make and sell world class beer, but a by-product of that is creating jobs and having a lot of fun. This ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IL: Hickory Creek Brewing Co planning soft opening this month
Gary Meyer, owner and head brewer at Hickory Creek Brewing Co. in Will County, plans to open its doors for a soft opening this month, with a grand opening in July, The Herald-News reported on June 4.

“I just want to make beer, sell beer and have fun with it,” Meyer said.

Meyer began brewing out of a 150-year-old former dairy barn on his property in 2016. During that time, he would invite his friends and neighbors over to sample several of his brews for $5 a cup, with all the profits being donated to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or the United States Submarine Veterans Inc.

“It was a way for me to figure out whether my beers were good enough to start a business,” Meyer said. “People were encouraging me, but the county wouldn’t let me run it from my home … and my wife still wanted to live there.”

Since retiring as a mechanical engineer at the Citgo Refinery in Lemont, Meyer moved out of the dairy barn and into a storefront space at 1005 W. Laraway Road. In a former life, the space was a wrestling practice facility Providence Catholic High School used.

Meyer said he credits President Jimmy Carter’s 1978 ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Steel Wheel Brewery opens its doors in southwestern Ontario
A new farm-based brewery in Brant, a municipality in southwestern Ontario, has announced that it is now open, Canadian Beer News reported on June 4.

The brewery had a soft opening on June 1 before officially launching on June 2. Brewery news USA, ME: Bath Ale Works expected to launch in Bath this summer
Just months after Bath’s first brewery opened up on Front Street, a second brewery seems set to call the City of Ships home, the Times Record reported on June 5.

Pepper Powers said that he is moving to Phippsburg this summer to establish the Bath Ale Works on State Street in Bath. The announcement comes on the heels of Bath Brewing Company opening its doors in the city earlier this year.

Powers is working with property owner Mark Sewell on developing a property at 8 State St. to house the brewery, along with a coin-operated laundry and exercise facility. Sewell’s plans were scheduled to be discussed at a Bath Planning Board meeting at 6 p.m. on June 5 at city hall.

The building that used to stand on that lot — the former home of the Bath Bus Company — was intentionally burned down last month during a training exercise for area firefighters.

According to planning board documents, Sewell intends to have two buildings constructed on the 1.1-acre property. One building will house the exercise center and Laundromat, while the second building will be entirely dedicated to the 3,162-square-foot brewery and tasting room.

“It’s relatively small,” said Powers, “but we want to start small … ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, WI: Good City Brewing to open second production facility in Milwaukee
Good City Brewing will open a second production facility and taproom, at the Entertainment Block the Milwaukee Bucks are developing across North Fourth Street from the new arena, BizTimes.com reported on May 31.

Good City will lease 11,000 square feet along Juneau Avenue. Head of the Herd Real Estate Development LLC, the developer of the Entertainment Block, made the announcement on May 31.

The brewery, located on Milwaukee’s East Side, was founded by Dan Katt, a local real estate developer, Andrew Jones, a former plant manager at Lakefront Brewing, and David Dupee, founder of equity crowdfunding platform CraftFund.

“(We) intentionally put down roots and made a bet on Milwaukee when we founded Good City in 2016,” Katt said. “The new Entertainment Block epitomizes the direction Milwaukee is going, and we couldn’t be more excited and honored to be involved in this once-in-a-generation development project.”

Bucks President Peter Feigin, said Good City will play a significant role in making the new Entertainment Block uniquely Wisconsin and a prime destination for food and craft beer.

Good City’s downtown brewery will focus on the production of sour beers, a fast-growing category within craft beer nationwide that requires the intentional introduction of wild yeast and bacteria into the brewing ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NJ: Angry Erik Brewing waiting for its brewery to be built in Lafayette by the end of the year
With ground-breaking ceremonies over - split over two weekends - Angry Erik Brewing has moved into the waiting stage for its new brewery to be built with a move-in hopefully by the end of the year, the New Jersey Herald reported on June 4.

"They're excavating now," said Heide Hassing, wife of brewmaster/owner Erik Hassing.

On May 20 and again on May 26, a total of about 160 patrons gathered at the brewery's future site on Camre Drive in Hampton, and many of them picked up the Nordic theme of Angry Erik and dressed as Vikings, complete with shields and swords. A small gathering at the site took place on May 20 and on May 26, 110 people marched the two-mile stretch from the current location on Millpond Drive in Lafayette to the new site.

Heide Hassing said the new facility will be 7,000 square feet, compared to the current 2,400 square feet in Lafayette.

"We'll have three times the space and three times the fermenting equipment," she said. "We can increase (brewing) capacity up to 10 fold."

The math works, she said, because the additional equipment allows multiple brews to be fermenting and aging at the same time.

And with the additional equipment, Angry Erik's ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, CT: Overshores Brewing Co. to open collaborative brewing space
Overshores Brewing Co., Connecticut’s first and only dedicated Belgian style brewer, announced the launch of a new type of brewery on June 1 that will add momentum to Connecticut’s growing enthusiasm for small batch, hand crafted ales and lagers while giving a leg up to new and innovative brands, Brewbound.com reported.

The new concept, dubbed ‘The Beeracks’ aims to be Connecticut’s first truly collaborative brewing space where multiple independent breweries operate under one roof. Much like other kinds of cooperatives where expenses and equipment are shared by small artisans, The Beeracks embraces individual creativity and seeks to bring consumers a direct line between the beers they enjoy and the person behind them.

Started in 2014, Overshores began by carving out a niche for itself making Belgian inspired ales distributed on a small scale throughout Connecticut and other New England states. Like many similar small to mid-sized breweries, Overshores produced a few outside brands on the side under contract as an added source of income but inspiration came when the contract brands asked if they could start hosting can releases and events of their own at Overshores’ brewery.

Overshores founder Christian Amport described the inspiration for the concept, “It started out slow but opening ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, FL: Funky Buddha’s Brewery handed over to Robot Brewing Company
Ryan Sentz has handed over the Funky Buddha Lounge & Brewery in Boca Raton, Florida, to family friend and homebrewer Allen Steen, who is transforming the space into the Robot Brewing Company & Quixotic Lounge, the Miami Herald reported on June 4.

Sentz, the founder of Funky Buddha, told Brewbound that the transaction, which was finalized about a month ago, gives Robot Brewing the lounge’s 1-barrel brewery and neighboring homebrew supply shop for “zero dollars.” Neither the intellectual property, including recipes, nor the land and building were included in the deal.

“We literally took nothing, with no personal guarantee,” Sentz said. “For us, this is giving someone an opportunity.”

Sentz said Steen made a $30,000 downpayment, which was returned under the condition that it be invested into the business. Sentz added that he and his wife, Giani, can make upwards of about $250,000 over five years on the transaction if certain benchmarks are reached.

Sentz held the small brewery and hookah lounge — where the Funky Buddha brand was created in 2006 — out of the beer company’s sale last August to Constellation Brands. However, the couple quickly realized that they didn’t have the time needed to invest into running the business.

Brewery news USA, CO: Caution Brewing to close its doors on June 30
Caution Brewing, which opened in April 2011 as one of the first in a wave of small, taproom-only breweries in Colorado, will close its doors on June 30, Westword reported on June 4.

Founded by Danny Wang and Betty Foley, Caution's original brewery was situated in an industrial park at 12445 East 39th Avenue, in far northeast Denver. It ran on a famed five-barrel brewing system — acquired from Odell Brewing — that was used to make unusual herb- and spice-flavored beers. Some were brewed with ingredients that paid tribute to Wang's Taiwanese parents, who own Lao Wang Noodle House on South Federal Boulevard.

In December 2013, Caution opened a second spot at 1057 South Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood, becoming the first metro-area brewery with two locations. In 2016, however, Caution turned its original space over to the Brewability Lab so that it could focus on running the Lakewood taproom, which also included a three-barrel brewing system.

"We had a hell of a good run," Danny Wang says. "It's a huge bummer, but it was also a chance for us to change things up a little. And for us, it was just time."

The craft-beer market in Colorado has shifted in the past few ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, VA: Twisted Ales Craft Brewing to turn off its taps
For the second time this year, a Richmond brewery is turning off its taps, RichmondBizSense reported on June 4.

Twisted Ales Craft Brewing, which opened a year ago at 212 W. Sixth St. in Manchester, announced last week it is shutting down while exploring a sale.

Married couple Jason and Debbi Price owned Twisted Ales, and Jason also has been working full time in IT.

He said they’re closing Twisted Ales because he received a job offer that would require him and his family to move to Raleigh, North Carolina. He had continued to work full time in IT since they opened the brewery in the Aragon Coffee building last year.

“Don’t get me wrong, I love the brewery,” Price said on Friday. “I just got the job offer last week and thought about what I wanted in life, and my family is up for the next adventure.”

“At end of July, I have to be in Raleigh and tie up everything about selling our house so we needed to make the commitment to close (the brewery).”

Though the Prices are ending Twisted Ales’ run, he said, they’re exploring selling the business. That would include the brewing equipment and taking over its lease.

“We’d love for somebody ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Heineken USA names female CEO
The U.S. beer industry's glass ceiling has finally been shattered. Heineken USA on June 6 named Maggie Timoney as its CEO, replacing Ronald den Elzen, who is assuming a global role at the Amsterdam-based brewer. Timoney is the first woman to lead a major U.S. beer supplier, according to Heineken, AdAge.com reported.

Timoney joins the U.S. division from Ireland, where she ran Heineken as CEO for the last five years. The move is a return to the States for Timoney, who joined the beer marketer in 1998 in a national sales planning role and was named Heineken USA's senior VP of human resources in 2010.

"Maggie is a competitive and energetic leader who is known for inspiring teams, operationalizing plans and mobilizing organizations to deliver business results,", Heineken Americas Region President Marc Busain said in an announcement, adding that she "over-delivered on volume, revenue, profit and market share targets" in Ireland.

Heineken USA, whose brands include its namesake lager as well as Dos Equis, Tecate and Strongbow, ranks as the nation's fourth-largest U.S. beer supplier with nearly 4 percent market share, according to Beer Marketer's Insights, which called Timoney the first woman to lead a top five U.S. beer supplier. Brewery news Germany: Sunny weather and looming FIFA World Cup boost beer sales in May
Sunny weather and the looming FIFA World Cup in Russia have provided a welcome boost to beer sales in Germany in May, German media reported on June 4.

Franz-Josef Weihrauch, spokesperson for the Krombacher brewery, told the German press agency that the brewery experienced the "best month in our history" in May. According to the spokesperson, Krombacher sold a record volume of 650,000 hectolitres of beer during the past month.

Similarly, rival brewery Veltins witnessed a surge in sales to 315,000 hectolitres in May, marking an increase of 10 percent compared to the same period last year.

Holger Eichele, president of the German Brewer's Association, attributed the rise in demand to a combination of recent good weather and a rush by gastronomical enterprises to stock the alcoholic beverage ahead of the World Cup.

Eichele said some breweries were currently running special additional shifts "in order to deliver enough drinks." Eichele further highlighted that the trend was likely to last throughout June.

He predicted that "especially while the World Cup is ongoing", numerous of public viewings, street parties and grill parties were likely to occur which would be "hard to imagine without a cold beer" as long as the weather played along.

Brewery news Japan: Brewers upping alcohol content to combat declining consumption
Japanese brewers are discovering a new way to tap the lucrative market of working adults: Get them tipsy more quickly and efficiently, Bloomberg reported on June, 3.

This domestic segment is becoming more important to beer makers Kirin Holdings Co. and Sapporo Holdings Co. as Japan’s famously aging population -- the oldest in the world -- drinks less. They have released canned drinks with up to 9 percent alcohol by volume, which is the highest it can be without being pushed into another tax bracket.

The brewers are promoting the ready-to-drink (RTD) segment in Japan, looking for ways to expand sales as demographic changes and a trend of consumers diversifying their drinking habits has led domestic beer consumption to fall two years in a row.

“It’s because consumers are getting more value for their money. They can get drunk without spending too much, I think that is the products’ biggest appeal,” said Euromonitor analyst Akari Utsunomiya. “There’s a deep-rooted tendency to save money among Japanese consumers."

The companies are going after consumers such as salarymen, as businessmen are known in Japan, and working women short on time. Executives say there is a desire among some drinkers to get more bang for their buck when ...More info on site

Brewery news Vietnam: Leading brewers spending big on advertisements in Vietnam
Global consumption has not increased in a decade, but Vietnamese are having a beer blast.

As more and more Vietnamese drinkers take to beer and competition heats up, leading brands are spending big on advertisements, VnExpress International reported on June 2.

Saigon Alcohol Beer and Beverages Corporation (Sabeco), the leading beer producer in Vietnam which brews the well-known Saigon and 333 beers, spent VND1.2 trillion ($52.9 million) on advertising last year.

While this figure is slightly less than its 2016 outlay, it still places Sabeco on the top of advertisement budgets list in the beer industry, spending more than VND1 trillion on product promotion in each of the last three years.

Meanwhile the producer of Hanoi and Truc Bach beers, Hanoi Beer Alcohol and Beverage Jsc, known as Habeco, spent VND568 billion ($24.6 million) on ads last year, over 3 times its 2014 expenditure.

The increased spending is a response to Habeco’s declining share of the beer market in recent years, from its heydays of having the most popular brands in Northern Vietnam. The company has been augmenting its advertising budget as “there has been no breakthrough in the marketing activities of the brand,” according to Viet Capital Securities, which claims to provide comprehensive research ...More info on site
