Brewery news USA: Craft beer hopes to reap greater profits through taproom and brewpub sales
Americans’ drink preferences are changing, and as they turn more toward wine and spirits, they have left the once undisputed regent — beer — struggling to compete. Even craft brewers, who for a decade have enjoyed explosive growth after tapping into Americans’ tastes for local and small production, are beginning to feel the pinch, the Food Dive reported on June 6.

Despite an 8% bump in total sales for independent craft breweries in 2017, which sold about $26 billion, another 165 craft breweries closed last year — an increase of nearly 70%. At the same time, for the beer market as a whole, sales volume dropped by 1% in 2017. The big players were hit particularly hard with large drops posted by American flagship products like Budweiser (-6.8%), Coors Light (-4.1%), Miller Lite (-2.8%) and Bud Light (-5.7%).

Although craft beers are still experiencing growth, sales are slowing. Instead of purchasing a pint at the bar, Nielsen data that the Brewers Association analyzed showed 55% of craft beer drinkers buy a brewery’s products after making a visit to a taproom. This trend not only draws in more customers, but provides higher profit margins — so small brewers are striving to shift more ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, MB: Nonsuch Brewing secures location for brick-and-mortar facility in Winnipeg
Close to a year after its debut as a contract brewing operation, Nonsuch Brewing has secured a location for a bricks-and-mortar facility in a space that will likely be familiar to Winnipeg craft beer drinkers, the Canadian Beer News reported on June 5.

As announced on the Nonsuch website on June 5, the nautical-themed brewery has “dropped anchor” at 125 Pacific Ave. which was previously home to PEG Beer Co. before its closure earlier this year.

The announcement comes on the 350th anniversary of the departure from England of the Nonsuch, a small ship that “sailed the ocean, anchored in Hudson’s Bay, proved the viability of the fur trade, and ultimately changed Canada’s history” – and inspired the name of the brewery, of course.

Production at the new Nonsuch facility is expected to start over the summer, with the opening of a public taproom and retail store to follow in the autumn.

Brewery news USA, CA: Alaro Brewing Co. eyeing June 30 opening in Sacramento
Alaro Brewing Co. will open June 30 at 2004 Capitol Ave., where some of Sacramento's beer pioneers honed their craft decades ago, the Sacramento Bee reported on June 7.

The Spanish-style brewery and tapas joint has been renovating what used to be the old Rubicon Brewing Co., founders Ray and Annette Ballestero announced in a press release on June 7. The brewery's name refers to a scenic town on Majorca, a Spanish island from where Ray's ancestors came.

Annette Ballestero co-founded River City Brewing Co. in the Downtown Plaza complex before Downtown Commons was built, and the rest of the staff has Sacramento roots, too. Head brewer Chris Keeton spent five years with Rubicon, executive chef Jason Azevedo previously worked at Hock Farm Craft & Provisions and the old Might Tavern, and sous chef David Santana put in four years next door at The Waterboy.

In addition to the IPAs, pale ales, stouts, porters, pilsners and seasonal beers flowing from Alaro's taps, the brewery will sell local and Spanish wine and other house-made beverages. They're hoping to make people who don't drink beer feel at home, but it'll be a brewery first, Ray Ballestero said.

"My dream is not to have our beer in ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, AL: Side By Each Brewing Co. hoping to open in Auburn this coming winter
Auburn, Alabama is getting a new brewery and a poutine restaurant, the Lewiston Sun Journal reported on June 7.

Business partners and friends Ben Low and Matt Johannes announced during the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s LA Metro Marketplace on June 7 that Side By Each Brewing Co. and The Poutine Factory will open at 1110 Minot Ave. this coming winter.

Low is the former director of brewing operations at Baxter Brewing Co. and Johannes the former head brewer there.

The chamber’s new economic development arm is providing financing support as they turn the former 10,480-square-foot Hammond Tractor building into a space that’s part brewery, part tasting room and part cafe.

“We’re really trying to keep it open and welcoming and family-friendly,” said Low, of Auburn. “It’s not going to be super-hipster feeling like a lot of the places in Portland, in keeping with the community.”

Kitchen space inside is being leased to Randy Smith from Pinky D’s Poutine Truck, who will operate his business within the business. Smith will serve lunch and dinner at The Poutine Factory.

Low said they spent seven months looking for the right spot in the Twin Cities.

The idea to open a brewery came from “partly just wanting to ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Missing Mountain Brewing Co to open its doors this week
Missing Mountain Brewing Co. — which will hold its soft opening on June 7 and grand opening on June 9 and 10 — has a definite intimate feel inside and out, the Akron Beacon Journal reported on June 5.

The taproom is small and filled with wood — whether it’s the wooden high-top communal tables or the wood covering the front of the bar. Large windows let in natural light.

There’s also a covered, outdoor seating area, along with a giant concrete patio in the back filled with tables with umbrellas and planters designed by The Red Twig to provide a splash of color.

The patio, which has an area for live music in the future, offers spectacular views of the rambling Cuyahoga River and it’s not unusual to spot deer, hawks and even a bald eagle hanging out.

“What we tried to create here is a warm place,” said Dave Bertolotti, who founded the brewery along with friends Keith McFarlane, Dan Kephart and Danny Yagersz. “I don’t like to use the word upscale but it is upscale-ish. We really wanted to walk this line between being a sophisticated-feeling taproom but not being off-putting or snobbish.”

McFarlane agreed with that assessment.

“We have a little bit ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OR: Porter Brewing Co. to be launched by husband and wife team in September
Husband and wife owners, Deven and Avara Roberts, plan on opening Porter Brewery Co. on the Northeast side of Redmond in September, The Source Weekly reported on June 6.

Porter Brewery Co. will be a cask-ale brewery offering English-style ales. The brewery will have a grassy outdoor space for folks to sit outside and kids to play.

The Bad Boys Barbecue food truck will be on site for melt-in-your-mouth barbecue to pair with their ales.

Avara Roberts said, "Our goal is to create an awesome space for families and neighbors to come hang out, be outside, be social and drink great ales."

Brewery news USA, TN: Saw Works Brewing Co. coming to Knockswille soon
Saw Works Brewing Co. soon will call West Town Mall home, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported on June 7.

The Knoxville brewery plans to open in the center of the mall food court later this summer, Saw Works representative Patrick King said.

The Saw Works kiosk will feature about 20 beers on tap.

"I think Saw Works has the opportunity to be a platform that supports local craft beer and innovation within the craft beer industry," King said. "This is something we believe in and remain committed to. We think this will breathe new life into a solid Knoxville brand."

Saw Works has been building excitement surrounding a new location since its East Depot Avenue location closed in September.

Its goodbye Instagram and Twitter posts ended with, "Many new exciting things to come! Stay tuned..."

Brewery news Japan: Kirin hopes to offset shrinking beer sales by launching wellness food and beverages
Kirin Holdings Co., seeking growth beyond a shrinking beer market, is turning its attention to making people healthier, Bloomberg reported on June 7.

Japan’s second-largest beermaker aims to reach 100 billion yen ($910 million) in sales of food and beverages aimed at appealing to wellness concerns in the next two decades, Chief Executive Officer Yoshinori Isozaki said in an interview on June 6. The segment could take 10 to 20 years to build out, he said.

“Last year we began looking at how we can develop a business in the area of health and well-being,” Isozaki said at the brewer’s Tokyo headquarters. “Everyone wants to live as long as they can.”

Selling more food may help Kirin offset declining sales at its mainstay brewery business, where it’s also fending off intensifying competition from Asahi Group Holdings Ltd. and Suntory Holdings Ltd. Along with adding drinks and snacks that contain healthful bacteria, Kirin aims to increase its premium beer offerings in Japan and acquire stakes in brewery operations in developing markets like Southeast Asia, Isozaki said.

Kirin has already launched the iMuse product line of snacks and drinks spiked with a lactobacilli the beermaker developed to improve digestion. Isozaki said he plans to take the ...More info on site

Brewery news Taiwan: Major food and beverage conglomerate launches its first line of beer
Major Taiwanese food and beverage conglomerate King Car Group launched its first line of beer on June 6, eyeing the domestic market that has long been dominated by one major brewer, Taiwan Beer, the Kyodo News Plus reported on June 7.

The German-style beer, Buckskin, is a light beer available in two varieties, Munich Helles and Hefeweizen, the latter of which differs in having a natural fruity taste.

Albert Lee, chief executive officer of the King Car Group, which opened Taiwan's first whisky distillery in 2005, launched the beer at the group's newly constructed brewery in Taoyuan, northwestern Taiwan.

Malts, hops and yeast, as well as the brewing equipment, are all imported from Germany, he told a press conference.

To make real German-style beer, Georg Rittmayer, whose family has been in the brewing business in Germany since 1422, was hired as chief consultant of the brewing team.

Currently, Taiwan Beer, brewed by the publicly owned Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. that succeeded the government's monopoly bureau in 2002, accounts for about 60 percent of domestic market share.

It is followed by Dutch brewer Heineken, with about 15 percent, and Japanese brand Kirin, with about 10 percent.

Lee said he has no intention to "defeat" the top three ...More info on site

Whisky news Myanmar: Pernod Richard expanding its whisky footprint in Myanmar
Pernod Richard is expanding its whisky footprint in Myanmar having acquired a majority stake in a new joint venture with private equity firm Yoma Strategic, making it the first major global producer of wine and spirits to enter the market, The Drinks Business reported on June 7.

The focus of the partnership, within which Pernod will hold a majority share, will be on the production and distribution of whisky in Myanmar.

The remaining equity will be split between Yoma Strategic, private equity firm Delta Capital Myanmar and distiller Win Brothers.

Pernod has said it plans to appoint a senior management team to head up operations in the country, with its entry into the market the first time a major global producer of wine and spirits has established a formal presence in Myanmar.

The agreement will see Yoma’s Myanmar-made High Class whisky brand become part of Pernod Riacrd’s portfolio, complementing the growth of Pernod’s Chivas and Ballantine’s whisky brands in Asia.

Holding the largest share in the partnership, Pernod will also take the lead in management of the production facilities, distribution and brand portfolio of Access Myanmar Distribution Company Ltd. (“AMDC”) – the current joint venture between Yoma Strategic, Win Brothers and Delta Capital Myanmar.

Brewery news India: AB InBev opens India’s first ever solar powered brewery in Karnataka
AB InBev’s Brewery in the temple town of T Narasipura, 45 minutes away from Mysuru, will brew Budweiser from 100% renewable energy, The News Minute reported on June 7.

The factory stands out amidst the endless greenery of T Narasipura, a quiet temple town in Mysuru district of Karnataka, where Anheuser-Busch (AB InBev), the Belgium-based company and world’s biggest beer producer, has set up the brewery on a 64 acre plot.

Unlike the 9 other breweries owned by AB InBev in India, the SPR brewery in T Narasipura is one-of-its kind in the country. The one-year-old brewery which had been running on conventional energy, has been transformed entirely into a state-of-the art solar powered unit in 2018, a big achievement in terms of making new inroads into carbon reduction in the country. And it does not end here.

The company, as part of its sustainability initiatives, has promised that every Budweiser in India will be brewed on 100% renewable electricity. And T Narasipura has become the ground zero from which this initiative will spread out.

The brewery is one among 17 units operated (10 owned and 7 on contract basis) by AB InBev in India and the fourth brewery producing Budweiser in the ...More info on site
